[MBZ] cold day reflections on owning a diesel

2005-12-02 Thread LT Don
It has happened every winter since I bought my '77 240D. Today it happened
again. I jumped into the car at work to make a grocery run for a planned
supper (Mexican Lasagna, by the way), pre-glowed, pre-glow light no longer
illuminated, turned the key, and heard a slow -- painfully slow -- crank of
the engine then silence. How could this happen? I'd taken five quick
one-mile trips in the car today in single digit temps [that is a giant
hint?].

Anyway, when I walked back into the office, our admin assistant said, That
was a quick trip. I admitted that once again my diesel wouldn't start.

She asked me the penultimate question: If it is this much a pain in the
ass, why do you INSIST (she is married, so has the language and tone down
pat) on driving a diesel?

I had several answers for her:

  1. I am stupid, I knew a month ago that I needed to add water to the
battery but didn't.
  2. A little birdie told me to put the Benz onto the battery charger last
night, but I blew it off.
  3. I am an idiot.
  4. Why do YOU drive a minivan?

Fortunately, our operations manager was standing there (he is a typical Iowa
farmer about my age, a former 'Nam Green Beret who is able to take off one
of his legs at will to shine it up after being introduced to Mister
Landmine) and gave a better reply than I could muster in my moment of
frustration.

Nick said: Maybe because it will last forever -- 500,000 miles easy.

Denise (admin assistant) asked me, Tell me again, what year is your car?
I told her it was a 1977 model. She swallowed then said, Gosh, it is the
same age I am.

I rest my case!

I told Denise that I am hoping this is the last car I have to buy for ME. I
am 52 and I expect that, with good maintenance and my current pace of low
annual miles and perhaps a sacrifice to the rust Gods, this diesel will
still be on the road when the state tells me I am too old to drive any
longer. I threw out a figure of 25 years, and Denise said, Gawd, I will be
about YOUR age then!

Oh -- I just put about 2 cups of water into the Interstate MegaMother
battery and hooked up the battery charger. I'm sure the alternator is
working fine, because after about 15 minutes if driving and letting it idle
while I was in the store getting supper, it cranked right up. Only drawing 7
amps on the charger, so I think the drive helped with the resurrection.

By the way, I when I couldn't get my jumper cables to work on my wife's car
(damn'd side battery terminals buried under the windshield washer reservoir)
I walked across the street and borrowed a hot pack from the car repair
place. Slapped that on and the old Benz fired right up. I will need to
search eBay for a good deal one of those ES5000 [I forget the rest of the
name].

Both are good vehicles. The 6.2 might be a little better because it
wont have the electronic IP on it. Wont have as much power though.
Depending on the rear end, an older 6.2 will get anywhere from 17-18
city and 20-24 highway. The 6.5 turbo should be able to do about the
same, once again, depending on the rear end. Now my 1 ton 6.5 truck
will only get about 12 no matter what its doing, but it has 4.10 gears
 in it.

Kaleb,
Please tell me why the 6.5 has less power? IS that by design, or due to
people tweaking the mechanical IP of the 6.2 for more fuel delivery?

Moreover, can you tell me how to find out what the rear end ratio is before
taking delivery of the truck!?

Thank you,

Omar.

The 6.5 has more power, its turbo. You can find out the axle ratio by
looking up the RPO codes that would be on a sticker in the glove box.

[MBZ] R class question

2005-12-02 Thread Rich Thomas
So I have seen a couple of new R class vehicles around, look pretty
cool. They look like they might become the new vehicle of choice for
the neighborhood bottle-blonde soccer mommies with cell phones moving up
from those little Lexi SUV things. That aside, it got me thinking that
with the new R insignia, I could probably buy one to stick on the TD,
make it a TDR and it would then go faster, like all the shibox slammed
ricers I see around that have been upgraded with McParts vinyl R stickers.

3.5 questions:

Does Rusty sell them (and how much)?

Moreover, can you tell me how to find out what the rear end ratio is
 before
  taking delivery of the truck!?

  Thank you,

  Omar.

Was gifted a '78 450SLC and the headlights
don't work except when the high beam flash
switch is operated. This puts the failure in the
light switch or hi/lo beam switch circuit.
My question is, how do you get at the wiring
 behind the dash?

Are you _sure_ it's not the fuses? There are four,
and I just can't remember whether or not the flash
switch is before or after them, but I do know that
power for flashing comes through yet another fuse.

That said, you usually pull the instrument pod out
to access the light switch. Requires removing the
steering wheel first. The column switch may require
removing the kick panel to unplug it, if it should
come to need replacing.

If the parking or fog lights work then the light switch
is getting power. Go over to the fuse box to see if
the fuses are getting power when lights are on.

three years now.

What really kicked me in the nuts was that fact that I tried to jump-start

These are Benz Viagra.

I've not been so impressed / amazed since my first (of only two) honeymoon.

I saw one (a Yugo) about a month/ 6wk ago spewing through a mall parking

thinking-ahead on the manufacturer's part. The driver looked somewhat
counter-culture, would probably have appreciated the punkin-orange

scrofulous enough that I thought about chasing him down to talk to him,
but we were sorta going the opposite directions.

I just had a thought -- would hemp oil burned in the diesel give an

  behind the dash?

Are you _sure_ it's not the fuses? There are four,
and I just can't remember whether or not the flash
switch is before or after them, but I do know that
power for flashing comes through yet another fuse.

That said, you usually pull the instrument pod out
to access the light switch. Requires removing the
steering wheel first. The column switch may require
removing the kick panel to unplug it, if it should
 come to need replacing.

If the parking or fog lights work then the light switch
is getting power. Go over to the fuse box to see if
the fuses are getting power when lights are on.

Start up and all electrical is fine. Blinkers work both left and

off the highway to street speed and the darn blinkers go away. Hazards
are fine. Cycle the hazard button a bunch of times, indicators show
blinks, but the stalk does not work. Dead, no engage for blinks left
or right. Finally come to park, no blinks with key in on position.

Go inside and come back later, you have blinkers again. Until you go
highway and repeat. No blinkers again.

LT Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It has happened every winter since
I bought my '77 240D. Today it happened

planned
supper (Mexican Lasagna, by the way), pre-glowed, pre-glow light no
longer
illuminated, turned the key, and heard a slow -- painfully slow --
crank of

the engine then silence. How could this happen? I'd taken five quick
one-mile trips in the car today in single digit temps [that is a giant
hint?].

Anyway, when I walked back into the office, our admin assistant said,
That
was a quick trip. I admitted that once again my diesel wouldn't
start.

She asked me the penultimate question: If it is this much a pain in
the
ass, why do you INSIST (she is married, so has the language and tone
down

pat) on driving a diesel?

I had several answers for her:

  1. I am stupid, I knew a month ago that I needed to add water to the
battery but didn't.
  2. A little birdie told me to put the Benz onto the battery charger
last

night, but I blew it off.
  3. I am an idiot.
  4. Why do YOU drive a minivan?

Fortunately, our operations manager was standing there (he is a
typical Iowa
farmer about my age, a former 'Nam Green Beret who is able to take off
one

of his legs at will to shine it up after being introduced to Mister
Landmine) and gave a better reply than I could muster in my moment of
frustration.

Nick said: Maybe because it will last forever -- 500,000 miles easy.

Denise (admin assistant) asked me, Tell me again, what year is your
car?
I told her it was a 1977 model. She swallowed then said, Gosh, it is
the

same age I am.

I rest my case!

I told Denise that I am hoping this is the last car I have to buy for
ME. I
am 52 and I expect that, with good maintenance and my current pace of
low

annual miles and perhaps a sacrifice to the rust Gods, this diesel will
still be on the road when the state tells me I am too old to drive any
longer. I threw out a figure of 25 years, and Denise said, Gawd, I
will be

about YOUR age then!

Oh -- I just put about 2 cups of water into the Interstate MegaMother
battery and hooked up the battery charger. I'm sure the alternator is
working fine, because after about 15 minutes if driving and letting it
idle
while I was in the store getting supper, it cranked right up. Only
drawing 7

amps on the charger, so I think the drive helped with the resurrection.

By the way, I when I couldn't get my jumper cables to work on my
wife's car
(damn'd side battery terminals buried under the windshield washer
reservoir)
I walked across the street and borrowed a hot pack from the car
repair

place. Slapped that on and the old Benz fired right up. I will need to
search eBay for a good deal one of those ES5000 [I forget the rest of
the

name].

Go inside and come back later, you have blinkers again. Until you go
highway and repeat. No blinkers again.

The Frankenheap is playing a bit of this game. I have to waggle
the stalk manually sometimes to get blinking. I've found that if
I play with the hazard knob I can get it going again. I think it's
time to dive into the hazard switch/flasher relay (one and the same).
Probably a bad contact or loose connection inside.

Not sure. The W15 170 was the first Mercedes to use the swing axle, in
1931 (transverse leaf springs in front). There's not much info out
there about the rear-engine W28, but I guess it is possible.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Finnish 617. In a 1936 W138 260D.

I just found this page on the rear-engine 150H:

Seems it was known as the tail spinner, big surprise. There's a

setup. Can anyone tell? And is that really the gas tank sitting on top
of the engine? Or is it that big square thing in back serving double

The switch controls the signal blinkers but maybe the Mercedes elves built

Dave,

I know I'm jumping into this topic a bit late. From what I see, the
KMAC bushings replace the inner bushing on the big spring link and the
bushing on the rear tie rod, correct? So to decrease negative camber,
adjustment of the eccentric bolts would pull the inner part of the
rear wheel *closer* to the car, wheras the Speedtek adjustable camber
arms push the top of the wheel *outward*? Do the KMAC eccentric bolts
for the tie rod offer a bigger range of adjustment compared to the
stock tie rod eccentrics?

Great choice! A 240D auto is a great first car.

I let my daughter drive my SDL one time and she immediately scraped the LF

2005-12-02 Thread Rich Thomas
Well, it actually refers to a specific medical condition, but there is
another sense of the word that describes something beyond ugly, of the
pus-oozing, smelly, visually offensive, nasty, lumpy sort -- kinda like
that thing in Men In Black that was trying to walk around and drive
disguised as a human. It seems a fitting description for the Yugo I
observed, and some old Benzes I have sadly seen, though they seem to
retain some dignity even in that condition. Not sure that this is a
well-defined definition, but I have heard the word in this context, and
like its feeling as you say it, and the image it conjures up even if you
have no idea what it means. In short, it is a really good word.

My wife introduces me to new medical terms occasionally, that have a
similar ring to them and allude to similarly unpleasant conditions (the
human body and behavior are capable of some truly gross achievements),
but are so obscure or jargonistic as to be generally useless in
conventional conversation. Around a bunch of doctors though you can
really have some fun if you are into that sort of thing.

Yiddish has some good words too, that when you hear them you just know
what they mean, even if you know no Yiddish. German has some good ones
too, Yiddish derives from German and Hebrew, getting the best words from
both.

So, just so I understand this correctly, you throw your only son in

how long he could hold his breath he found your AK and, how shall we

You talking 100F or 100C? My 240D runs at about ~175F when warmed up. I
believe that is what the thermostat is set for.

I am guessing that the gauge on the car is in celsius so I am talking celsius,
although Rusty's thermostat page for my car says temp 80 so what I am really
looking for from the list is a number, 80 seems too low, not sure.

What is a decent price ? Any recommendations of a good shop at the West end

Re: [MBZ] Photos of K-Mac rear camber kit

2005-12-02 Thread Dave M.
Hi Aaron,

Wow, I almost missed your post buried in the digest! Anyway, you are
correct on all counts. To reduce negative camber, the bottom of the
tire is pulled inward, same as AMG did on the original Hammer. The tie
rod eccentrics must allow more adjustment but I don't know the specs.
There's also a factory tie rod eccentric that allows more adjustment -
it's buried in the EPC somewhere, the cost is quite high, and I don't
know if it's any help without the camber adjustment anyway.

Good catch. I was thinking in terms of 100 F, which is obviously too
low. 100C is too hot, and the cooling system flush and perhaps a new
thermostat are in order. You can check the operation of the tstat in a can
of water on the stove with a known good thermometer that can be
immersed. Notice I said can and not wife 1.0's saucepan.

decrease isn't enough, because crime rates have fallen everywhere,
including states with strict gun control laws.)

I suspect if those statistics had supported their position, they would
have included them, so their absence makes me suspicious.

Seems it was known as the tail spinner, big surprise.

It also says, Handling the car was a challenge. Even expert pilots

There's a picture of a bare chassis, but I can't quite make out the rear
axle setup. Can anyone tell? And is that really the gas tank sitting
on top of the engine? Or is it that big square thing in back serving
double duty as a bumper? Yikes!

It can't serve as a bumper because the rear of the transaxle extends
farther rearward. It also has at least one large-diameter hose connecting
to its lower edge. I vote for radiator, particularly since the rear
surface is a different color than the rest. The roundish black thing in
front of and to the right of the black/grey box looks like a blower and
looks to be ducted into the black/grey box. The black box near the top of
the engine, next to the valve cover, appears to be a coolant reservoir.
If the black/grey box is the radiator, with the connections at the bottom
it must have been a real pain to get the air out.

It's hard to tell what the rear suspension is, but swing axle seems
likely, particularly with the placement of the spring and the link to
the rear of the spring.

be at about 100 when fully warmed up. Sometimes spiking to over 120

thermostat since it is probably original to the car.

Probably. But it _can_ be a bad sender too, and an independent check
of the actual head temperature is a worthy second opinion. I've had
both failures in my fleet. You also may need an acid flush, if deposits
have reduced the thermal conductivity of the interior of the system.
Potentially even a new radiator. But start with the easy stuff, a
thermostat and maybe an acid flush. Ramblings:

in the vanguiard for biodiesel when its climate is so arid... Sort of makes

 GILLETTE -- A Wyoming-based start-up company plans to build a 30
million-gallons-per-year biodiesel plant in Campbell County.

It would be the first-ever biodiesel plant in the state and among the
largest in the nation. It would also create a new opportunity for Wyoming
farmers to grow camelina, canola, brown mustard and other oil seed crops.

Wyoming Biodiesel Co., a subsidiary of Sheridan-based Energy Fuel
 Dynamics
LLC, says it is working with a strategic partner to power the facility
using waste steam. Construction could begin next spring, said business
 development manager Jim Kintz.

Estimated cost to build the plant is from $35 million to $40 million.

Once the plant was announced, people wanted to buy all of our
 production,
 Kintz said.

Biodiesel is produced through a chemical process separating glycerin from
fat or vegetable oil. The biodegradable, nontoxic fuel can be blended
 with
petroleum-based diesel and used in almost any diesel engine with little
 or
no modification, according to the National Biodiesel Board, a national
 trade
 association representing the industry.

The biodiesel production process also generates a high-protein cattle
 feed
 by-product.

Our goal is to maximize the use of Wyoming resources for feedstock,
building state-of-the-art production refinement facilities, expanding
employment opportunities statewide and consumption of the produced
 bio-fuels, Kintz said.
