Yep, prices are going nuts. Some fool wants $9500 for an 86 300d with
140k miles. will trade up or down for a Previa all trac. I told him I
would make it a straight trade for my previa, since the 603 is a

It is a 19 year old car dude, and the star on the hood is a $25 part.
I can just get a star on my hood and offer the previa as a euro benz

Why is it disturbing?
Stuff in the air is a natural phenomonon, from dust stirred up by the wind to
hair falling off lions on the savanna.
Dirt is life, we rise from it and return to it. Why are we in such an all
fired hurry to keep it away?
I work with a guy who is paranoid about germs, uses that anti-bacterial hand
sanitizer before every meal. I wipe my hands on my pants after I sneeze and
sometimes go a couple days without showering. I'm sick less than half as often
as he is. He's in better physical shape than I am but in the coming influenza
epidemic I've got immunities built up and he's got nothing.

The efficiency of ionization air purifiers is very low. That is to say
that only a small percentage of particulates are trapped in a single
pass. Mechanical filtration using HEPA filters is very efficient. They
use more electricity and replacing the filters is expensive.
I use both at home in the bedroom 24/7. The gunk that accumulates in
each is impressive and disturbing.

I've always been suspicious of the devices that claim to give off
beneficial negative ions. If ground-level ozone was good for you the
EPA wouldn't worry about it. If indoor ozone was good for you then
laser printer manufacturers wouldn't equip their printers with ozone
filters to stop them from giving it off.

I also wanted to add a momentary contact
type switch for my Valentine-1. I specifically wanted it set
up so that when the key is turned off, and then the car is
re-started, the V-1 does NOT turn back on...In case you're wondering
why, it's because of the irritating 'startup dance' that the V-1
goes through at each power-up. I don't use it all the time, and
hate listenting to that screeching every time...

How long is the irritating screech? If your car still has a
'fasten belts' timer, you could plumb it into the V1 such that
it mutes it until later. Or, just put in some kind of muting
timer that's unconnected to the car.

When I used to drive with my 'equalizer', I got a ticket or two
when I might not have, had I only had the thing turned on! After
that I hard-wired it into the car so there was no manual step
required.

E) maybe compared to todays new disposable rock climbers even at $7K with

Re: [MBZ] Limo console wood install report (W124)

2005-12-23 Thread Dave M.
Hi Aaron,

Nah, I'm too lazy to pull everything back to the main distribution
points. I tapped into one of the gray/blue wires feeding the window
switches. ;-)

Interestingly, while most MB switches require switching the
negative/ground lead (due to internal wiring of the illuminations
LED's), the recirc switch actually allows positive switching because
it has a separate ground soley for the two LED's. The only other
switch I've found that does this is the defroster, which has two NO
contacts, one of which is tied to the red LED. In the recirc switch,
the red LED is totally separate, which is kinda cool - gives you more
options. You come across these things in your PnP travels much?

Re: [MBZ] MityVac

2005-12-23 Thread Scott Ritchey
I like the one (pressure bleeder) that's advertised in the STAR for about
$40. It's a miniature garden sprayer with a pressure gauge and a screw-cap
on the end of the hose. The screw cap goes on the top of the brake
reservoir. The only thing I don't like about the design is that the cap is
hard mounted to the hose so you need to unwind the kinks in the hose as
you screw the cap on the reservoir. The other gotcha is the little rubber
buttons on top of the reservoir. If those buttons are hard or cracked,
they'll let the pressure out ... and a bunch of brake fluid as well.
Recommend replacement if in doubt before pressure bleeding.

Yea thats where I got mine. I just dont use mine for brakes anymore, I

to get a pressure bleeder? What is the best one?

Pressure bleeding is the ONLY way to go. My MityVac doesn't go anywhere
near
brake fluid anymore. I use it all the time for testing vacuum system
components, and boost pressure related items.

the
cheaper plastic version; no problems yet but I also use a pressure bleeder

I built one based on this version. I highly recommend adding the
pressure gauge, and using a sprayer body with a built in pressure

have the ability to release that internal pressure when you've
finished.

Folks,

I have a friend here in Athens, GA who made a cheap purchase of a

We're also needing a colling fan viscous clutch ...anyone got a used

I just finished buying car from Stefan Schultze. 1982 300TD Wagon. The
car was definitely not maintained very well. He apparently is buying
them and reselling on Ebay. The belts were almost nonexistent and we
were lucky to make it home to Michigan without a failure. There was
also a leak in the Transmission line he did not make us aware of. I
noticed it when we got home and the fluid level was barely touching the
stick. I added almost 2 quarts before repairing the line.

 Brian,

This all falls under the let the buyer beware clause. You should
have done

your homework on the car before purchasing it.

I've owned 15 old Mercedes to date and I've put serious money into
every

good deal that I have bough to date. These days, I just figure that
I'll

have to put $2,000 into anything I buy. And that's after I check out
the car

and decide that it's in good shape. But you need to understand that
I'll

purchase an older Mercedes then I'll put 50,000 + miles a year on it.

My latest Mercedes, a 1987 300SDL, cost me $1600.00 the first month I
owned

it. About this time last year, the transmission cost me $1760.00 but
at

least it got me home. I'm nursing a cracked head or bad head gasket
and have

been doing so for over 50,000 miles. Even with all of these costs,
it's

still cheaper than the rate that my Wife's new Grand Cherokee is

 depreciating and I won't complain.

 Thanks,

Subject: [MBZ] Vacuum pump question answered, plus rant

Thanks to all those that replied to my question about the vacuum pump
port.

I had the engine replaced with a used one, and the shop that did the
work

warranted the engine for 30 days. The day after I picked the car up,
the

engine wouldn't stop. I took it back to have the problem resolved,
and was

told the problem was in the vacuum transducers near the turbo. I took
the

car back, then discovered that there wasn't any vacuum on the small
port on

the pump. Also, the climate control had air coming from the defrost
ports

only, and the shifting was very hard, as was mentioned in some of your

 replies.

I had a very bad experience with this engine replacement. The shop
owner

claims to have many years experience working on MBZ products, but when
I

picked the car up, the heat didn't work (mechanic said it was a
problem with

my climate control), the starter engaged intermittently, the idler
pulley

was chafing the back side of the belt, a turbo support bracket was
missing,

and various bolts were missing here and there. I spent three hours
checking

the climate control, only to finally figure out that the mechanic had
left a

plug in the return water pipe where it connects to the heater hose
that

comes off the monovalve. I returned the car for repair of the other

problems. They fixed the starter issue, installed the turbo bracket (
after

arguing with me on the phone for 5 minutes that the bracket didn't
exist ),

told me the idler pulley wasn't part of what was warranted ( the idler

pulley was from the replacement engine, and I told him that since it
wasn't

under warranty, I wanted my old one back ), and said the shutoff
problem was

in the emission control transducers, which I know is BS, because
there's no

vacuum on the port to start with.

If anyone's interested, the shop is Chaney's Auto Service in Ringgold,
VA.

 I'm not going back.

Oh, and he charged me $2000 for the replacement engine, labor to
remove the

replacement engine from the donor vehicle, promised me a 10% cash
discount

from the original quoted price, then added enough miscellaneous parts
(motor

mounts, used starter, hoses, etc..) to make up the difference. Go
figure.

And no, it's not worth going to

Re: [MBZ] GREEN BABY, YEA

2005-12-23 Thread Hendrik Riessen

99% of cars are rust buckets, the only difference is the rate of rust.
My 230E is a similar exterior colour but thankfully it is light tan inside.
Anyhow let us know the outcome of the bidding on the SLC, if it is half as
good as the ad states then it should attract a pretty sum. However that
colour combo is not to everyone's taste, perhaps a touch too seventies. Then
again the retro look is in again.

Is that the same as the strut arm? It's a rod bolted to a cup shaped

though it proved to be unnecessary.

The creak sounds more like rubber abrading against another material, e.g., a

BTW, is this true about the 5 gallons of fuel? Mercedes [roadside

If you've pounded the pavement looking for a clean used Mercedes you can
really appreciate the virtues of ebay, particular when the seemingly PERFECT
car comes along and you can relax and gaze longingly at those beautiful
photos. WIth ebay's far-flung reach, bids from a potentially global array
of potential buyers serve as a better ratification of market value than can
be realized by conventional car selling methodologies (newspaper and
supermarket ads).

Yikes! The interior EXACTLY matches the exterior color! There is no
escaping the green-ness of it all so you better love that color!

I once saw an SL C in metallic thistle green, and it was very pretty. IIRC
it was like a cross between silver and the lightest shade of green. This
seems more like avocado but it's hard to sell.

P.S. Beware of sellers who SHOUT IN ALL CAPS and have lousy feedback
ratings.

My 230E is a similar exterior colour but thankfully it is light tan

Anyhow let us know the outcome of the bidding on the SLC, if it is half a=
s
good as the ad states then it should attract a pretty sum. However that
colour combo is not to everyone's taste, perhaps a touch too seventies.
 Then
again the retro look is in again.

[MBZ] W140 transmission no 3rd.

2005-12-23 Thread dave walton
1994 S350. My wife runs errands yesterday am without issue. I take it
out yesterday pm and it won't shift into 3rd. Just tried it again.
Same symptom. Reverse works fine. Neutral is where it should be. Shift
lever feels the same. It goes into 2nd at 2400rpm and 15mph. I take it
to 3000rpm at 35mph and no shift into 3rd. 3500rpm and still no shift.
No noises, no vibration. Fluid level okay. According to my notes, it's
a 140.134 chassis, 603.971 engine, with a 722.367 transmission.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Restoring a car is usally a labor of love, not an investment.

I fell in love with a '62 Volvo P1800, one of the early ones with the bull
horn bumpers, made in England by Jensen. I had owned two of the later coupes
(one being my first car, a red '66 coupe) and a sportswagon, and really
wanted another.

It was a solid $500 southern car -- most of the pieces were there.

When I sat down and figured out that to properly restore it would take me a
year + and $20K, I bailed. If I wanted a *nice* late model driver in
pristine condition, I could have had my choice of a number in the $6-8K
range. And I was not looking for a trailer queen.

I ended up not buying that car, and in fact not buying *any* car.

Folks,

I have a friend here in Athens, GA who made a cheap purchase of a Missouri
81 300td with a cracked fallen off crank pulley. He found a pulley and we
need to get new dowel pins. Is there a special MB tool (or home method) of
holding the harmonic balancer when putting the 200 ft lbs or so of torque
on the big nut?

We're also needing a colling fan viscous clutch ...anyone got a used one?
email me directly, please. This is his christmas present!!

A stuck kick down button can do that. Then it will shift when the engine
speed approaches the redline. If it's not the kickdown switch or the
cable linkage, then it starts to get expensive.

We had 6 of snow on the ground before we got hit with a freezing rain/snow

mid-20s since.

My driveway is like a skating ring and the snow banks are hard as rocks.
Great time to get the snowmobiles out though.

Supposed to be +1 here tomorrow (that is C not F). Wet and slippery. Lots
of

accidents as people are not smart enough to slow down. ABS and Airbags are
supposed to save them so they don't have to drive smart. Costly however.

Last year it was about -25 to -30 if I recall correctly. I'll take the
warmer weather thank you.

Is there something else I could use to loosen it up?

I purchased a 280SE 3.5 coupe that the seller emphatically admonished me NOT
to restore because it was a daily driver that had been modified over the
years I undertook a restoration anyway that took about 7 years and
plenty o' cash. In the end, I have a wonderful driving car that is not so
perfect that it stays in the garage, but still looks fabulous, and because
prices for this model have been trending up on ebay, I might even be able to
get back what I put into it if and when I decide to sell.

On 12/23/05, Bob Rentfro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Andrew noted:

It's interesting how the prices of pristine unrestored models uncannily
reflect the cost of purchasing and then restoring a less than perfect
example of the same car. My sense is that restoration costs have inflated
way faster than general inflation, which acts to suppress the market value
of tired/rusty/oogy 111 coupes,108 sedans, and soon to be classic 123
 diesels.

Very ture...but there is always that age old discussion between
 restoring
a car and making it a daily driver.
To me, at least restore means fis it up to show it/drive it
 occasionally...maybe a 1957 300SL for example.
 Daily driver...well that's obvious...maybe a 1983 240D for example.
Even thought the same exact work was done on both vehicles, one was
 restore
and one was made into a daily driver.

It also could be the control pressure cable thatcontrols the vacuum box it
attaches too on the side of the transmission or the vacuum control valve on
the drivers side. The cable casing tends to break and changes the shift
point. PITA to change in your driveway.

2005-12-23 Thread andrew strasfogel
How long have you owned the car? It could have been buggered by a PO.

I had a problem with my rear hatch jammed shut, and in opening it the
tech did something to the locking mechanism that disabled key access to the
hatch! The lock moves with central vacuum but the manual lock will forever
be inoperative.
