After the final ten miles at only 65mph, I pulled off I-40 at my exit, came to a stop light, where the engine promptly died. It took a bit of cranking to start, and I had to hold throttle to keep it running. Same thing at the next light. It worked fine at the third and forth stops. Any idea of what might have caused this? the 123 has mechanical guage, so if its not showing anything, it really doesnt have anything. Did you check the oil level? Yeah, little to go wrong there, but the line could be disconnected and capped off because the gauges do crack and then leak oil all over the place. Re: [MBZ] 124 wagon hydraulic suspension
You can use VW mineral hydraulic fluid G002000, also known as Pentosin 11S. It is green, and should be available at any auto parts store or VW/Audi dealer. Usually between $10 and $20/litre, sold in 1L square steel cans. Struts are only bad if they leak. The MB service materials specify a permissible leak rate (0.4L/10,000km for W123 models). You can't diagnose the system until there is fluid in it. D. On the 88 300 TE i just got, there is no fluid in the suspension reservoir. THe rear struts have the boots pushed up. There is evidence that the hydraulic suspension has not worked for some time. Please send replies directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED] since I am away from home and it is easier to use on the road than my regular email account. 1. Any advice where to start? I have no febi fluid and can't get any for at least 2 days. Did anyone ever locate anything else that would be compatible enough for leak testing? I plan to order the febi, but I'd lke to figure out what needs fixing ASAP because I have 2 more days here that I can work on it. 2. I am assuming that the Dual pump is toasted on the suspension side. Someone rebuilt the dual pump. I think it was Hans N. Can anyone tell me about rebuilding the pump. Did you get the parts form Rusty? This car has a distributor at the front of the cam, not a suspension hydraulic pump. 3. Is there any way to test the rear struts without fluid or the pump working? I am guessing not, but anything I can do now to determine what I need to order will be helpful. I am guessing the struts are blown, or at least while everything is empty it would be a good time to rebuild them. Has anyone done this? are there any special tools needed? Thank you all for any collective wisdom you can impart. A little history: This is the Warrenton , VA car. WHen it got here it would not start. (Starter turned, but won't engage.) Supposedly it has a bad trans but everything else was ok. I took the starter out and found the bendix rusted tight. I took it apart and polished the shaft and put it back together with neversieze. I got the car running ant the engine seems ok . It appears to have been sitting for at least 6 months. THe PO has 10 different recent addresses. It looks like this wagon has been used for hauling. I wonder if it was used on a paper route. It is a pretty decent car, except that it won't start, and the hydraulic suspension is a mess and supposedly the trans is bad. So far the trans seems to shift ok. It looks like the biggest problems are with the suspension. On my test run the engine died. It has no spark, so now I am trying to track that down. Coil has 0.2 to 0.3 ohm across the primary terminals and about 88K ohms from either primary to the secondary. The rollback driver didn't tie it down cause we were only going about 1/4 mile and it slid forward and cracked the grill. Bummer! It is around zero so too cold to diagnose on the roadside. Re: [MBZ] 300TE ignition trigger
Update: 8 pm Sat night. I was able to find the troubleshooting procedure from skinnerbox. I was not able to do the tests that require dwell meter or oscilloscope. I did the voltage and ohmmeter tests. The trigger is at the flywheel. I thought maybe I had loosened something when i took the starter out and put it back. THe starter runs like a champ now. I love neverseize! I have not yet solved the ignition problem. The coil is suspect. the secondary coil resistance was high when i checked it the first time. When i checked it again after a couple of hours, it is within spec. The rotor is at the high resistance end of the spec. the cap center pin is at the high end of the range also. Coil wire appears to be ok. (within spec.) I checked one plug wire, and it is high ohm. Pulled one plug plug so far it it looks like it has been in for 100k miles. All of this in spec, but nearly out stuff seems to indicate poor running or rough running, not going from running fine to ignition off as fast as turning the switch. And that is what happened. Zoom to on the roadside with no sparky, no go. It ran about 1.5 mile and the engine temp was getting up to 80-85 c. I am going to head out tomorrow and see if I can find some plug wire, and plugs. I'd like to try a rotor if I could find one. I doubt I can find a cap, rotor or coil withough waiting for an order from Rusty. I am thinking a little emery cloth on the rotor might make a little difference. Tonight, after everything cooled down again, I have a decent spark from the coil, but a weak spark at the end of the spark plug wire. After it came back in off the tow truck it had no spark from the coil. I think it might run when everything is cool. As near as I can tell it needs plugs, wires, and very possibly a coil. I'm not so sure that there's much difference in the fuel pre-filters from the early 80s to the 90s 124s. I've seen them in clear and opaque housings, and prefer the clear ones so that you can see when crud starts to discolor the filter inside. Re: [MBZ] 300TE ignition trigger
Solved! I put a coil from an IH pickup on just to test it. Vroom! started right up. I will be ordering a coil monday morning. Rats! I had hoped to get this car diagnosed and know exactly what i needed this weekend. I guess I am going to assume the worst and go ahead and work over the struts and hydraulic pump sometime after the parts are in. Well, at least the starter works! And it appears the trans is ok! Change the fluid and filter soon, after the parts come in. I may let someone else do that. I am afraid to run it with a coil other than OE with all the electronics. Dont want to fry a $1000 black box trying to use a unmatched coil. Loren Faeth Real Estate [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Update: 8 pm Sat night. Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo
Hi Werner, The 240D uses a prefilter with a 90 degree bend in one end - don't know about the W124 but will ask Rusty. One thing - in the world of Porsche, the Porsche parts system has been widely available for a while now - and last year, Porsche released an official version as .pdf files available for $15 for all the dealers. Not as interactive as the bootleg copies but certainly more up to date. I can only assume this kind of information has never filtered to MB owners? I guess if it had, it'd be on the internet by now. In any case, it's pretty nice to be able to open the files and look at the same info the parts counter people see. I had a set of microfische for all the MB models showing the parts diagrams and parts numbers by chassis number. I still have them around here - but the W124 came after I bought my set of films. ;-( and I no longer have the fische reader anyway. Larry - both my 126 and the 124 use a right angle connected pre-filter. I also used the same one on my daughter's 123. I suspect thee is not difference in these! As for the printed MB manuals, I have the climate control one, and 2 volumes for the chassis. I don't have the engine nor the electrical diagrams, which would be nice, but I've gotten along without them for 15 years now. Could have used the electrical diagrams when I chased down the broken wires to the trunk lid that at first killed the trunk lights, then blew the fuse. Ended up removing the inside cover of the lid, and replacing a couple feet of the wire that gets flexed every time the trunk lid is raised. Put it all back together and now it all works again, hopefully for the next 15 years!;-)) Werner - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2006 12:27 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo Hi Werner, The 240D uses a prefilter with a 90 degree bend in one end - don't know about the W124 but will ask Rusty. [MBZ] Speedometer Freeze up???
About 2 to 3,000 miles ago on my 300D had some trouble with my speedometer not working. I know this drill so I replaced the cable with new (installed correctly) and had the speedometer sent out to Overseas Speedometer to have it looked at and serviced. Yesterday with temps around 25 degrees F was out on the highway everything worked fine. Last night temps dropped to 5 degrees F and when I went out to this morn noticed the needle on zero and no little digits going around. QUESTION: Can/do/ have any of you experienced the same? Or am I destined to do this drill every few thousand miles? Two things I can not take. Not knowing how fast I am going or how far I have gone. Regards Tom Scordato 1977 300D 1979 240D

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo
Hi Werner That's good to know about the pre-filters - actually, now that I think about it I believe the main fuel filter for the 240D and W124 300D is the same - sure looked the same. This is going to make keeping an inventory of parts around for both vehicles much easier! This morning was the coldest of the season at 17F according to the t'stat in the instrument cluster - I decided to see how it would start - thinking that's probably the best possible test to check the condition of the engine, GPs, fuel injectors, etc. To my delight, it glowed for about 10 seconds then *instantly* fired up and settled to a even rpm - no bumping, shaking, or uneven running - it acted the same as it did on the first day we looked at it when it was in the 60s. ;-) This car just keeps getting better better! At this rate I won;t have to do any tinkering! I am concerned with possibly having some algae growth in the tank. What's the preferred product to kill the bugs? Or should I pull the fuel level insert from the fuel tank and see if there's any black stuff in there? BTW, does the anti-bacteria In-A-Can actually get rid of the black sludge or just stop it from growing? I fear I already know the answer - I should visually check the tank and clean it -- but once its clean a can every 6 months will keep it clean - right? I want to avoid the problem OK Don is having / just had when his car started running poorly when on a trip - even though we don't have a definitive answer so far AFAIK. Now, where can I go, where can I go... doesn;t really matter - I won't go anywhere, I'll just drive around! ;-) Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info - Original Message - From: Werner Fehlauer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2006 9:48 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo Larry - both my 126 and the 124 use a right angle connected pre-filter. The cable should be removed from the housing(you did change the housing didn't you?) by pulling it from the speedo end. Apply a light film of lube to the entire length of the cable and re-install. If some lube is present, I would recommend cleaning it out and using a suitable cold temp lube. It gets way cold here in the Adirondacks and I have had all sorts of things act up. [MBZ] 220D Trunk floor project
Well, it's been about two months now that I've been tackling the severely rusted out trunk floor on my 1973 220D. I'm only able to devote 2-3 hours per week so it will be a long haul. Basically the floor has been rusted through since I bought the car in 1997 and I've been putting it off for other more cosmetic rust repairs, but I'm tired of having to deal with diesel (be it ) biodiesel fumes coming in thought the trunk. Also all the contents in the trunk getting a nice even coating of soot. I'm tired of making excuses to friends that ride in my car that the trunk is too dirty for their coat or bag. So, I went ahead and ordered a factory original trunk floor from KK manufacturing. This has turned out to be a massive undertaking, having to drill out or grind out hundreds of spot welds. Was this car overbuilt or what! Anyway, I've removed about a third or so of the trunk floor. Can see the fuel tank and exhaust underneath- looks weird. The smaller floor area to the left is actually a separate piece that does not seem to be available, at least, not at any reasonable cost. I will fabricate this, beading and all. Left lower portion of quarter panel also rusted through. Ordered a $40 patch panel from KK manufacturing. This part will be easier but I unfortunately have to fabricate the backing to which this is spot welded to as that also rusted away. I will send pictures of my progress once they become available. Re: [MBZ] Speedometer Freeze up???
John Berryman wrote: It gets way cold here in the Adirondacks and I have had all sorts of things act up. Turn signals being stiff, headlight switches, shifters. Its amazing what can happen in extreme cold. I remember pushing in the clutch to start my VW Bus in the winter, to reduce the load on the starter, when I lived in Michigan. The 90-weight gear lube in the tranny was like molasses when it was cold; letting the clutch out in neutral would drop the idle by a couple hundred RPM. I froze my *ss off in that Bus but it never got stuck. ;)
Re: [MBZ] 220D Trunk floor project
Ah, another 1973 220D with rust in the trunk floor! This one I have is not actually rusted through, but it wouldn't take much to break through it. From the looks of it, it seems like the floor is rusted from moisture coming through the trunk or window seal rather than road salt How much was the floor panel that you purchased?
