[MBZ] 190E 16V Parts

2006-03-21 Thread mhall27
Wasn't there someone on the list parting out a 190E 16v? I'm going to look at
one tomorrow that may have missing parts - but then again I couldn't really
understand what the guy was telling me, so who knows.

But if your parting one out, please get it touch!

TIA,
Mike Hall

I hope you are right about all the 60x ingines using the same pump,
but Rusty'e site shows a different pump for the earlier run of 602
engines in the 300D 2.5 --
http://tinyurl.com/opbsc

The replacement vacuum pump from Pierburg is identical for all OM60x
engines manufactured between 1984 and 1997 and I believe thru 1999 (but
I can't confirm that for '98 and '99 models). There were modifications
to the pump, at least 3 that I know of and probably more that I don't
know of. Some of these resulted MAY have resulted in different Mercedes
part numbers, but they are all 7.20607 pumps. The latest ones have four
screws on the outside and are supposed to be somewhat longer lived than
the earlier ones with the front cover that's crimped on, but from what
I've heard, they are starting to fail at about 200kmi. I expect the life
of the pump is very closely related to how clean the oil remains!

I had to pull about half of a sparrow out of an air scoop on the side
of a Cessna 150 once ---

I bet that the motorcycle/miniskirt/cop photo was staged.

As to the bird in the star - a bit of bad luck for the bird. My mother nailed
a partridge with her Honda Civic a
few years ago and drove it into the lower part of the grill so hard that it
ended up inside the grill. We had a
devil of a time getting it out. Had to use long nosed pliers and pull it out
 in pieces - messy.

I only ask because I'm staring at my old 74 240D plates on the wall (long

[MBZ] 300SD oil cooler line

2006-03-21 Thread carbucks
Kaleb helped me out on another list (before I found this one again) on a
massive oil leak on my just purchased 85 300SD. He correctly identified
the hole in the oil cooler. Sourced out an upper oil cooler line at
about half the dealer's asking price. It arrived today, but have just
spent the last three hours in frustration trying to install it.

I cut out the old one, so it came out easily. However I can't find the
right combination to weave it through from the oil filter to the oil
cooler. Been removing parts to make it easier to get at, but nothing is
working.

Anyone been there, done that with this?

Thanks,

Martin

List wisdom rules! Kaleb nailed it. The PO or their mechanic had
routed the upper oil cooler line too close to the belt for the air
conditioner compressor. Over time, the belt had worn a groove and
eventally a hole into the cooler line.

Now I just need to find an online parts supplier who will ship to Canada.

Thanks to all who responded,

There is so much oil at the front it's coming off the v-belts and

Alan Duff had one for sale last fall at a parts car price, but he ended up
keeping it and was having it repaired last I heard. I intend to convert
mine into a 190Dt, surplus items will include a rusty and crashed 190Dt
body and a strong running 16v engine. I know of a 16v in either Iowa

You are correct. The are both 7.20607 pumps but one is a 7.20607.74 and
the other is a 7.20607.25. I believe the mechanisms to be identical (the
housings are slightly different), but I can't prove that.

Don't jack it up too far unless you unhook the engine shock too, but I
don't think you will get the lines in without at least undoing the left
mount and raising the engine a bit.

I don't think so, but I've never tried substituting them. If they were
interchangeable, I'm sure that Mercedes would eliminate one of them so
they didn't have to stock two different versions.

Thanks to all who replied. Came across this posting in alt.auto.mercedes
that confirms you have to raise the engine.

On my '82 300cd, the lower line has to come out first to get at the upper
line. Maybe that's different on the S cars of the era.

This procedure works for removing both lines on my car (you might as well do
both). I assume it works for other cars with the 5-cyl turbo diesel engine:

1) Detach the hoses at the filter and oil cooler. Removing the fan and
shroud may help you get at the fitting at the oil cooler end of the lower
hose. Make sure you remove the clamps holding the lines in place at the AC
compressor and in front of the engine mount. A 10-inch Crescent wrench works
nicely on the line fittings.

2) Jack up the left side of the car so the LF wheel is 2-3 inches off the
ground. Use a jack stand under the left frame rail to secure the car in its
raised position.

3) Detach the driver's-side motor mount and engine shock absorber. You'll
need to crawl under the car to remove the engine-to-mount bolt and lower nut
on the engine shock. There's a flat area on the lower shaft of the shock
where you can use a 7mm open-end wrench to keep the shaft from spinning
while you're turning the nut.

4) Put a jack under the left side of the engine and lift it 3 inches. If you
use a block of 2x4 and take care, you should be able to jack it up under a
corner of the oil pan.

5) Remove the old lines by sliding them down and out at the back of the
engine bay. You'll need to rotate them a little, but they do come out
without a lot of difficulty.

6) Installation is the reverse of removal. Take care not to cross-thread the
fittings at the oil cooler -- you don't want to strip the threads on the
cooler. I also used a little pipe sealer on the joints to prevent leaks.

Whew! Not a fun job. While you have things unbuttoned, it may be time to
replace the engine mount and engine shock . Not to mention the water pump
and fan clutch.

HTH,
Russ

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo - Need ALDA Info.

2006-03-21 Thread JFreezn

In a message dated 3/20/2006 12:50:55 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I'm seeing a feeling of being pushed back in the seat - smoothly and
progressively as rpm's build between 2000 and 3000 rpm. Then it's a steady
acceleration. But at times I don't notice the push (for lack of a better
term) as the turbo spools up and the scenery starts to go by more quickly.
That's my question - it seems to be more noticable at some times while other
times, it just gradually adds speed - still quickly, but not with the
feeling of being pressed into the seat.

When I learned I didn't have an ALDA in my W123 240D, I ignored the posts
when it was being discussed. I plan to read the manual to see how it works
and what adjustments are suggested but if the list would provide their
experiences with ALDA and what they did / how they did it -- I'd really
appreciate it as the workshop manual is not always clear.

Larry,

The ALDA changes the injected fuel quantity as atmospheric pressure and/or
boost pressure varies. Below is what I wrote in reply to previous inquiries.
I think it is important enough to repeat the main theme here. I, and others
on this list, believe that the injection pump calibration shifts towards
leaner as the pump ages. To correct this you can spend big bucks, pull the
inector pump and send it to a Bosch shop for recalibrating. OR... you can
change
the setting on the ALDA to compensate. This is wy cheaper:

I firmly believe that as the fuel injection pump ages, the calibration

goes towards the lean side, due to softening of springs and wear of
various levers and fulcrums. This results in weak off-the-line
performance, especially when starting out with a cold engine.

Jerking the FI pump and having it recalibrated could fix this problem
but it's expensive. What I believe WILL give you a kick in the pants
is adding to that shim between the ALDA/compensater, and the FI pump.

That will give you more fuel off-idle, before the boost comes in, and

the car will really step out. Especially watch the improvement when
  starting out cold.

The shim measurements are 0.705 OD, and 0.560 ID. You should be able

to duplicate the shim, in various thickness, with a Dremel and some
 flat washers.

You need a 25mm wrench (1 inch works) to turn the nut on the FI pump
clockwise while holding the ALDA with a strap wrench, big pliers, or ?

Once the nut breaks loose it is easy to turn and release the ALDA.

Watch for shims in the base of the ALDA and/or the top of the FI pump.
Use a
thin screwdriver to probe for the shims as they are virtually
invisible. I
would return all existing shims or their equal, plust .040 to .060
additional shims, to compensate for calibration shift in the FI pumps
 due to age.

There is no way of knowing how much each individual car will need-what

we are looking for is a much improved jump off idle, before the boost
comes in, and especially when the engine is cold. All this without
excess smoke at WOT on a sunny day, and no big increase in fuel
 consumption

Typically, those that break the seal on the turbo ALDAs to get to the
adjusting screw get about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns CCW before they hit the

thread limit--at .025 per revolution, that would be about like a
.040 shim. I have not heard of anyone coming back CW off the max,
but I have heard of
people twisting off the screw, trying to get more!Hence the
reason for
shims-the screws can be used for fine tuning, if needed.

A friend at work recently bought a '85 380SL. It's leaving some oil on the
garage floor and he thinks it is the oil pan. I cautioned him to be sure
by getting the bottom of the engine clean to locate the source. I took a
glance underneath and it looks like a full oil pan with no lower pan
cover. Also looks pretty tight with the crossmember and tie rods. Anyone
changed the pan gasket before and know the procedure?

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo - ALDA Adjusting Info.

2006-03-21 Thread l02turner

Thanks Jim,
Your comments about the slowness when the engine is cold - that's my
symptom to a tee!

I now understand what I need to do - and why (very important to me) with
me now needing to familiarize myself with the ALDA IP in the workshop
manuals. I know my 240D IP very well - but it will take a few minutes to
locate all the parts I need to be concerned with on the 300D. Then, the
actual work should go quickly once I get some appropriately sized shims.
Also, things look like they'll be much harder to physically reach on the
300D. But that's the price of the more modern technology I guess!
If anyone has found suitable shims available off the shelf somewhere
please share that info.

Thanks again!!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I'm seeing a feeling of being pushed back in the seat - smoothly and
progressively as rpm's build between 2000 and 3000 rpm. Then it's a
steady

acceleration. But at times I don't notice the push (for lack of a better
term) as the turbo spools up and the scenery starts to go by more
quickly.
That's my question - it seems to be more noticable at some times while
other

times, it just gradually adds speed - still quickly, but not with the
feeling of being pressed into the seat.

When I learned I didn't have an ALDA in my W123 240D, I ignored the posts
when it was being discussed. I plan to read the manual to see how it
works

and what adjustments are suggested but if the list would provide their
experiences with ALDA and what they did / how they did it -- I'd really
appreciate it as the workshop manual is not always clear.

Larry,

The ALDA changes the injected fuel quantity as atmospheric pressure and/or
boost pressure varies. Below is what I wrote in reply to previous
inquiries.
I think it is important enough to repeat the main theme here. I, and
others

on this list, believe that the injection pump calibration shifts towards
leaner as the pump ages. To correct this you can spend big bucks, pull
the
inector pump and send it to a Bosch shop for recalibrating. OR... you
can change

the setting on the ALDA to compensate.

Speaking from experience on removing motor mount bolts. Clean the bolt so
that it is free of any dirt or other residue. Get the proper size hex
wrench in a socket drive. Use some taps on the wrench to break the bolt
loose. You don't want to strip the head of the bolt out.

Next Q - where is the competition? I can't recall seeeing anything that
suggests anyone else is working on a
similar vehicle to offer us. One might think that with current fuel price
trends, there will be more interest in
very efficient vehicles. These little 800cc diesels do pretty well on fuel in
town and out. The little thing will
go too. I followed one on the highway going to the lake last summer that was
running along at about 115 kph which
would translate to about 70 plus MPH.

There was an article in the local paper here a while back about a fellow who
uses a Smart to deliver newspapers
over a route that extends from Winnipeg east to at least the Ontario border
which is about 90 miles out from
Winnipeg. He apparently packs the vehicle full of papers and drives that every

2006-03-21 Thread ned kleinhenz
Marshall pointed out The latest ones have four
screws on the outside and are supposed to be somewhat longer lived than
the earlier ones with the front cover that's crimped on, but from what
I've heard, they are starting to fail at about 200kmi. I expect the life
of the pump is very closely related to how clean the oil remains!

The disheartening news - my recently failed vacuum pump is a Peirburg with
the four screws that hold on the cover.
It failed at only 143k miles. Of course, I didn't get the PO's oil
change records for the first 102k miles. I can only tell you that for the
last 42k miles (mostly highway) it has used Mobil 1 changed at 5k mile
intervals.

I replaced the crimped on cover vacuum pump of my other 124 at ~ 320k miles
and it was still functioning fine. I replaced that one because
I learned from this list about the problems caused when these pumps fail.

My current recommendation is for anybody that buys a 124 with ANY number of
miles on it, replace the vacuum pump immediately. Then perhaps consider
future replacements at 200k mile intervals.

Re: [MBZ] Uh Oh -- Little Bearings?

2006-03-21 Thread Marshall Booth

ned kleinhenz wrote:

Ned has come to the conclusion that many people that work on OM60x
powered cars regularly and have encountered failed pumps reach. That
while the majority of pumps may well last the life of the engine, enough
(maybe 25% by my estimates) have failed by 200kmi to warrant caution.
There is NO easy/reliable test and when the pump actually fails there is
the potential for the engine to be destroyed both when the pump fails
and pieces fall into the timing chain as well as later if all of the
pump debris is not removed from the engine (requires removal of the oil
pan and on most models this is not trivial) and it's picked up by the
oil pump.

Replacing the pump every 150-200kmi seems prudent to me. I have had ONE
pump self destruct (at about 204kmi) without destroying the engine and
I've put new pumps in all but my '85 190D 2.0 when the pumps started to
leak at the front cover or get noisy.

Snapped rod, snapped chain, overheated from no water or no oil, will all
do it and then there are a few much, much less likely possibilities.

Slipping a 6 cylinder engine into a 201 chassis requires redesigning the
chassis and then fabricating it. Sure it can be done, but it won't be
cheap or easy. It would make a LOT more sense to slip a 603/606 engine

Well being from Canada I can say a Smart at a cost of 20-25K cdn, say
15-20K USA is, well a 15-20K car. If you pay 75K for a E or S class

benz it's quite a different vehicle and with a different comfort level.

Still it gets a zillion miles to the gallon, and the owners I know
say it hasn't incurred costs, however some are unhappy with the
cost of B service, still people using it, either folks having to
commute dozens of miles per day or kids under the age of 20 are quite

happy with it.

I'll lastly note the smart that likely will come to the USA won't be
the Smart sold in Canada since it's being reengineered.
I though I read somewhere the diesel would be replaced by a product
from Suzuki, but I can't find the link.

[MBZ] 82 240D Auto No Reverse

2006-03-21 Thread Alan Duff
Ok, I admit to not paying attention to posts unless it applies to
something I have right then. Just bought a nice 82 240D auto transmission
car with 151k miles. Its problem is it doesn't engage in reverse. Forward
gears engage but the shift points are pretty high. What is the fix for no
reverse? TIA

There was an interesting thing on NPR the other night about chilled seats
actually saving fuel by making people feel cooler without actually running the
AC. The chillers just fan your butt but apparently that airflow makes a
difference.
They were talking about the chiller's ability to improve fleet fuel economy
but just a little bit and thus save a bunch of gas per year.

A 123 with a 722.1 series transmission will have an adjustment outside
the case that controls the tension of the reverse band or clutch (don't
recall which). When it works loose (not uncommon at all) reverse won't
engage. Usually a very simple, inexpensive fix.

Look on the passenger side of the tranny from under the hood. If you are
lucky you will see that the band adjustment bolt and locknut have loosened
themselves and needs screwing back in. That fixed it on my 82.

Good luck, Mike

[MBZ] MSRP's of our old cars

2006-03-21 Thread Christopher McCann
Any source to find this out, in general? I heard $42,000 for the 87 300TD -
plug that into the inflation calculator and it's $70,604 (2005 $) - that seems
INSANE. Even without the inflation calculator - $42,000 in '87 was ALOT of
money for a station wagon...even an MB.

  Thanks,

A few years ago I remember going through the MBUSA
site and requested a Mulrooney (sp?) sticker for my

2006-03-21 Thread Chuck Landenberger

Chris,

Bob Nitske's book puts the MSRP for the 87 300TD at $42,500

I guess that means the ML at $60 something is cheaper in today's
dollars... I'm just guessing on the ML price.

Yes, it is INSANE.
