Peter, do you mean here the bushings on the camber arms? Are they available as a separate part? I got a copy of Enduring Passion by Butterfield. It's in the business section as it is on branding. He uses MB as the example throughout the book (very nice cover, BTW) and he interviews lots of MB insiders and there is a substantial amount of documentation on the take over by marketing...right about 1994. You are spot on. Chris Alex Chamberlain [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm not surprised at any of these prices' modern equivalents. She likes her 87 300D, but it needs more work than it makes sense to do with AC, paint, and suspension. She says she would like a roadster and since I don't know of a diesel one I was considering an early 90's SL, maybe a 300 or a 500. She was also considering an audi TT. Re: [MBZ] W124 squirrely rear end, Part II
The rubber is part of the springing system, cannot be replaced separately. That's why the axle must be positioned at normal ride height BEFORE tightening the bolts on both ends of the links. All the links are made the same way -- a steel sleeve that is clamped in place by the bolt vulcanized with a large rubber bushing to the link itself. I've seen all steel replacements, but I suspect you would have both changes in handling from a lower spring rate and rear end sag if you used them. Peter

What you describe is exactly what SHOULD happen when there is a problem with the preglow system, NOT the ignition switch. Usually, the problem is one or two bad glow plugs (they should measure 0.6 ohms when the engine is cold and at most twice that when hot). The system is designed to prevent the dash light from illumining the FIRST time the key is turned on when there is a problem. If you turn the key on, off, on, off, on the light can usually be coaxed to illuminate even when there is a failure. You have been NOTIFIED that there is a preglow problem. The next prudent move is to diagnose it! It is almost surely NOT a fuse - as all the 190D 2.5ts I've seen had an electronic overload protection circuit rather than a fuse in the preglow relay. Re: [MBZ] 1983 300SD continued
I would love to have the SDL. The amount of leg space out back is significant, even though I think it is only 2 more than the SD. Ended up with the POS SDL for the legroom. The extra 5.5 of wheelbase is all in the rear footwell, and is a pretty serious addition to legroom back there. About like what you get by running the front seats up all the way, but without the need for Munchkin driver and shotgun occupants. And _with_ the passenger seat all the way forward it makes quite a playpen in back, for those waiting-for-SWMBA moments in parking lots. -- Jim

If the sunroof leaks, check for a deteriorated drain pan or plugged drains (all four corners, drains out the doorposts. The sunroof gasket is a fiber faced thing, it does NOT seal out water. The water is collected by the drain pan and drained out four plastic pipes to the ground. If they are plugged, the headliner gets wet. Peter

Re: [MBZ] Project 240D in Oregon
had a really pleasant chat with Jim when he came by to get the hubcaps. Nice family and that 240D is a SUPERB car for what it is. I must bow down to Jim's ability to take dead iron and make it come back to life. The car got all the way to Seattle from Spokane and most likely will get even better on the way back. Thanks for the kind words. Car did indeed go all the way back home, uneventfully. I got these words out of my wife: I was wrong. Sweet music! Car purrs like a kitten on the highway, too. The super large tank in the trunk should give it an 800 mile range easy. He got paintless dent repair to the front fender and with the The light came on at about 1000 miles. We only got 23.5 MPG on this shakedown cruise, that was a bit disappointing. Ran her hard, though. All the mountain passes and such really wrung the car out. Starts and runs smoother easier and stronger than ever before. trim strip back on, it would be hard to tell it was hurt unless you get really close. He wants to get the AC back in and working, as well as CC to function well. If he sells over here, he can expect his base price of $2500 easy. If I sell it over there I may not need to get the AC working. That would be nice. Easy enough to restore, probably, but I have to wait until a suitable donor shows up at the U-Pull. That could take an indefinite amount of time. No other approach is economically feasible for a profit-making venture. But we don't want to be sitting on this car for very long. My wife fears its continued existence here. This is not a Kansas 220D car, but a really nice example of the w123 in #3 condition. With a good rubbing out, a detailing, spit shine to the engine compartment, I think it could be a #2. No excess smoke or noise, just a great klatta klatta. Anybody interested in a car with some upgradability should consider it for a friend or relative. List members would want to take the next step in car care and cover the cosmetic items and get a timing chain in at the next valve adjustment. I think it has curb appeal, great example of a 10 footer, and better than many of the '79 cars I see available. Just my $0.02 It'll be for sale soon! Re: [MBZ] Question about 1984 190D auto
I'll buy the 190D, free up the tranny, and trade Jim out of that 240D. Sound good? I'm going to look at it tomorrow since I have a free day. Well, I'm personally looking to try to make a couple of months' health insurance out of the 240D, and only have a budget in the few hundreds for a 190D motor/tranny pair. A terminally rusty one with a bit of drivetrain life left in it would be ideal. -- Jim

Why anyone would cut a hole in the top of a perfectly good vehicle is beyond me! I did find them handy here in Texas. Re: [MBZ] An SL for wifey?
I had a 1995 SL320 and subsequently a 1997 SL500. The eight cylinder gets slightly better gas mileage. The V8 car gets 18mpg city and 25mpg highway. In the process of looking at one time I drove a manual SL300. I felt it was a little doggy; but then I didn't have enough time with it to really get used to the car. ___ GG St. Louis - Cincinnati 1997 SL500 http://homepage.mac.com/deneals/SL500.htm -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bob DuPuy Sent: Thursday, March 23, 2006 5:05 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] An SL for wifey? Re: [MBZ] An SL for wifey?
The SL320 / 300SL will have the M104 engine... nice motor, it has the usual issues with head gaskets like most of the M104's, don't think there's anything else major to worry about. The SL500 / 500SL will have the M119 engine, which is a real powerhouse... no major problems there, but usually due for a timing chain rails by 150k (and it's not as easy or cheap to do as our old diesels). The M119 is a fairly expensive engine to maintain, though... not that the M104 is cheap, but the M119 is a notch above. The 500SL had mechanical (KE?) injection from 90-92 and then bumped up to the electronic LH injection starting in 1993, IIRC. If your wife doesn't care about power (and you don't either), I'd stick with the SL320. If one of you wants a *fast* car, get the SL500. Drive both and let us know how you like them! I'd love a late R129 SL500 'Silver Arrow' edition with the AMG Sport package. I wondered about that too. The 3.5 was plenty quick and expensive to maintain, and quite satisfying to own and drive despite it being painted in their most popular - and my least favorite - color, tobacco brown :(( I restored it into concours condition and later sold it to MBNA credit card company for use in their promotional parades. Re: [MBZ] Door Seal Epiphany
Does anyone have a clue how to adjust an electric S/R on a late W111 coupe or W108 sedan? According to the manual, the front edge is supposed to be in a position slightly below the car's roofline. In actuality, mine sticks u a couple mm ABOVE the rood of the car, and the adjustment procedure (raising or lowering the rails) has zero effect on lowering the edge. Perhaps the rails or something associated with them are worn out - I don't know. Has anyone BT/DT (elec. s/r adjustment) with a 108/109 sedan or late 111 coupe? [MBZ] 300SD 1985 Vacuum problems
Hi Is there a good guide on checking out the vacuum system on my 126 oiler? It has been flakey for a while but as of late I need to rev the engine a bit after I have removed the key to get it to kill. The brakes are a bit hard when I first start driving. 'But of course' the door locks work but they are helped out with a electric pump on a 126 right? I have had a leak in the heater controls for a while. I could here it hissing intermittently. I have the 126 CD, a hand held vacuum pump and a vacuum gauge (besides the one on the pump). Is there a good checklist of what to go thru? A list of the PDF-s or something. A while back a nice soul sent me a speedometer check list and it was quite helpful. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Supersedans
Their 500E prices were a bit low. Most 500E's are in the $12-$17k range with average miles (80-120k). Not much goes cheaper than that unless it's salvage or has really high miles. Clean low miles examples are in the $20-25k range. There's not much over $30k except garage queens and exotica like that RENNtech Fittipaldi car (asking $65k). There is one for sale in SoCal with 5kmi (not a typo) that is, literally, showroom new. He turned down offers (from serious collectors) in the $80-$90k range, think he wants approx $100k. (I know this is nearly incomrehensible to a group that lives breathes $500 W123's, but yes there are people out there willing to pay those amounts.) The A124 (cabriolet, 124.066) is priced very close to the 500E (124.036)... in the same $10-$25k range. These two 124's are, IMO, the highest valued 124's in the USA. (Outside the US there were other exotic models and I have no clue what those values are. The E60 Limited is my dream car... thought only a dozen were built worldwide though.) :-) -dm -- Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:59:40 -0800 From: Sunil Hari [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Supersedans And they said $20K for a 500E? What IS critical is an even temp distribution during the period during which you are adjusting the valves. So while the cars have become more attainable (marketing-speak for cheaper), they weren't quite so fabulously expensive as the inflation calculator would suggest, ceteris paribus.
