No, unless you like skinned knuckles. It has to be something flat so it will
not slip off. Those bolts should not be tight but may be corroded. It helps
to leave the serpentine belt in place to help hold the pulley.

Stick a big screwdriver between two of them to hold the pulley and

[MBZ] chimney

2006-09-14 Thread Constantine N. Polites

Followup:

Along Dave's pattern of thought, you could use Metalbestos flues from
the basement through the
living room floor and then use offsets to connect with the existing
chimney. After that you can enclose the new pipes with a small
partition. The insulated pipe can be placed within 2" of

combustable material.

[MBZ] Chimney for wood stove

2006-09-14 Thread Constantine N. Polites
The all fuel flues from metalbestos are quite good. Go to
www.selkirkinc.com. They are double wall stainless steel and come in
various diameters from 5" to 14" and in lengths from 6" to 48".
A cleanout tee is recommended. Get the Platinum series, ultra temp
which goes up to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hmm. Tempting. The consensus seems to be that most of the time, a good
result can be expected.

I'm sure there's a limit to how bad the dent can be and still have this
work.

I've heard mention of hail damage - that would seem to be small dings.

My dent is more like a pushed-in area on the pass. rear door. Not too
bad,
in fact somewhat hard to notice. But the area of damage spans about a
foot
in radius, and unfortunately, crosses the horizontal crease in the door.

Wonder if that's the sort of thing that dentless handles.

And what's wrong with a fireplace insert? We had two of those in MD and

[MBZ] 201 P/S Pulley

2006-09-14 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
The pulley on my 190DT had to come off, out of the way, to do the headgasket
and other cleanup. In my infinite capacity to screw-up, the triangular boss
that holds the pulley lost an ear. The 3 bolts must have been put in by Odin
and Thor. The final solutution was a J/Y replacement. Reviewing the mess that I
had made of the original, showed me that despite trying methods ancient and
modern, an air impact wrench is necessary for removal of those pesky bolts.
I hope you have better luck!

Afraid I'm going to need to be more clever than that. To get an impact wrench
in there (I presume you ment an impact wrench rather than just and air ratchet)
I'd need to take the radiator out or find an extremely short impact wrench.

Hmm.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Chimney for wood stove

2006-09-14 Thread Rich Thomas
Underground you need some sort of masonry shaft (you can buy concrete
blocks in a "[ ]" shape to make a square shaft with about an 8" sq hole)
and run a SS or clay liner up that to a bit above ground level, then go
with a double-walled SS chimney up the side of the house along the other
one (or wherever you want it). That all needs to sit on a foundation
pad underground so it does not sink. Making a jog to the existing
chimney will make a huge cleanout problem, and might not be allowed.
You need to check codes wherever you live -- the fire dept and ( more
importantly) your homeowner insurance company usually have some strong
opinions about woodstoves and chimneys. I think it also needs to go
lower than where the WS flue goes in, for a lower cleanout port, so you
are going to have to dig a sizeable hole down several feet, do a pour,
build your flue, put in ports, etc.

None of this is cheap or particularly easy to do, but might be worth it
if the payback numbers work. I had a huge old Victorian house near
Boston, had a woodstove in the kitchen using the old cookstove flue that
went down to the basement (they had the cookstove in the basement back
in those days, below the kitchen). I ran the bottom cleanout to the
basement. I had to rebuild the top of the chimney where it made a jog
in the attic, line it with SS, build it up at the top to meet code,
etc. House had an oil boiler for primary heat. The last winter we were
there I only spent $500 on oil when my neighbors were doing that every
3-4 weeks or more often -- fired the stove in the evenings, set the
thermostat at 58F to keep the downstairs tolerable, and the heat from
the stove went up the back stairs to keep the upstairs comfortable
through the night. Timer turned on the boiler at 6AM for an hour to
warm things a bit until I got the stove going again, then back to 58F
for the day. I scrounged firewood here and there (it warms you twice!)
so cost of that was nothing but a coupla Saturdays a year and some gas
for the chainsaw, and one year I rented a splitter as I had a whole
maple tree to split up and that slitting maul was looking mighty
fearsome. I gave the city workers beer occasionally (leave a 6pack of
Bud on top of my trash barrels!) and they would drop off some cut-up
trees now and then when they had some good oak or maple -- saved them a
trip to the dump. The Bud was my largest annual expense.

Thanks Jim. Cleanout is one issue I thought of as well.

Have a look at http://www.woodheat.org/ they have some thoughts
on chimneys. Outside brickwork is one of their least favorite
forms due to several ills and inefficiencies. Best is a metal
pipe straight up through the center of the house.

My thought is to install a second chimney along side the original that
goes
down underground far enough to tie into the basement, and then tie it
into
the original a few feet above ground? The existing hole into our
living room

would be sealed off.

The jog over would be a problem for efficiency and cleanout.

Re: [MBZ] 201 Power steering

2006-09-14 Thread archer
A heavy duty strap type oil filter wrench will sometimes hold a flat pulley
while unbolting it.

I've wrapped an old piece of flat belt around a flat pulley and then held it
with a large pipe wrench while unbolting it if the pulley is not too large.
The belt has to be thick enough such that the teeth of the pipe wrench won't
penetrate it.

I've also wrapped an old flat belt around a flat pulley and pinched it tight
with one or more vise grips, then held the vise grips while loosening the
bolts.

Rubbing the pulley and the old belt with violin rosin (that's the only form
of rosin I know of that's easily obtainable) will often keep it from
slipping. The rosin can probably be removed from the pulley with turpentine
or other solvents once it's off.

I've never worked on a w201 so I'm assuming it has a flat pulley.

Good luck,
Gerry

I'd asked this a couple weeks ago but got no replies, has no one ever
replaced a w201 power steering pump?
I have no idea how the hell to get the thing out. I *think* the pully has
to come off, looks like 3 bolts, well I sure as hell can't get 'em off.
I figured I'd get 'em off the replacement tonight to prove thats the way
it goes. Well here I am snorting and fighting with the thing when it
occurs to me I'll have to get 'em off the one actually in the car. Theres
absolutely no way I can hold that pully tight enough to get the bolts off
without seriously mauling the pully. I'd bet with a c-clamp on it I could
pull 'em or with an air gun but theres no place to put the gun in the
engine bay. Maybe with 2 wrenches at the same time?

[MBZ] OT: Chimney for wood stove

2006-09-14 Thread Dave Wakin
This is definitely OT. Nothing about a Mercedes, just trying to find out if
anyone can give me any input on a chimney for a wood stove.

I have an existing chimney that is on the outside of my house. It's footer
is at ground level and the existing flue pipe goes through the 1st floor
wall into our living room. What I would like to do is set the wood stove up
in our basement, but I am unsure of how I could hook it up to the existing
chimney.

My thought is to install a second chimney along side the original that goes
down underground far enough to tie into the basement, and then tie it into
the original a few feet above ground? The existing hole into our living room
would be sealed off.

Thanks in advance,

Dave Wakin

Re: [MBZ] OT 1990 Suburban 6.2 diesel tranny q's

2006-09-14 Thread Potter, Tom E
Since I won't go too much further off topic here. Does anyone have a VSS
for an older model 700R4 from an early '80s Pontiac Firebird. I need the
one with the gear drive in the transmission and the electronic output
for the electronic speedometer.

I swapped an older 700R4 into my 1992 GMC and now I have no speedometer
until I find a proper VSS. The newer model VSS is operated by a reluctor
ring on the transmission tailshaft. Swapping a reluctor onto the older
transmission can be done, but it is a lot of work. From what research I
have done, I understand that the early '80s Pontiac Firebirds had the
electronic speedometer with the gear drive on the tailshaft.

My money's on the center bearing support. (Rubber.) Had several of
them go bad, versus none of the flex discs. But you need to get under
there to check it out. The bearing support won't ruin your day as it
fails, not so the flex discs! (The bearing and center of the driveline

The big round lifters move up and down, cant really tell more than that.
Doesnt really act like a blown head gasket. All the ones I have seen

oil smoke, its like burning too much diesel smoke.

Peter Frederick wrote:

I would also watch the intake valve on #1 -- it can indeed stick.

I have had to replace two lines. One on and SDL and one on an SD. Both 87's.
Both were just oozing, no spray. Both were cracked at the fitting. I have
had to replace one o-ring. It too was just oozing.

Each of the three times I was able to clean the connectors and the top of
the injector pump with brake parts cleaner, let it dry, then start the car.
Then you can see if its seeping at the fitting or down at the base. If its
leeking real fast you may have to get someone else to start the car while
you are watching.

Hope this helps.

It was, but not necessarily in `90. I got a used transmission for my
85 petrol suburban out of an 86 diesel. It was a 700R4, but the torque
converter and shiftpoints are different than for the petrol.

Delivery valve o-rings. Get new seals and torque properly, else you
get a dead miss on leaking ones. Cracked lines don't ooze, they spray
fuel everywhere.

Re: [MBZ] update on my 2.5 turbo

2006-09-14 Thread Peter Frederick
Pull the valve cover and watch for air blowing out the head/block
junction at the front of the engine. This is a known head gasket
failure on the -14- heads on 603s, and I would assume equally possible
on a 602. Will cause lots of blue smoke from oil sucked into #1 on the
intake stroke.

I would also watch the intake valve on #1 -- it can indeed stick.

My first thought is that one or two of the delivery valve seals are
leaking. The car had been sitting for four or five days since it was
last driven, then took a good 40 seconds or more of cranking to start
it today, telling me that air is getting where it doesn't belong.
Is this indicative of bad delivery valve seals, or is it likely to be
something else, like a crakced line?
