I agree that if you are situationally capable - don't even bring any
moving company into the mix. We all need to jettison a lot of stuff,
don't we?

I have on a couple of moves left some things behind and taken only
what I could fit inside my trusty car.

But as in so many other areas, marriage complicates life. On this
move, we had to go with the moving company and take whatever treatment
they gave us.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-25 Thread archer
Can pickup my neighbors broadband from the driveway by the house with a
laptop, but can't pick it up by the shop which is about 200 ft behind the
house where I would like to.
Thought about buying a TVDirect reflector from a used store and mounting a
USB Linksys remote in it in place of the TVDirect pickup but not sure it the
reflector would be big enough for a weak signal.

If the signal could be relayed from the house to the shop some way (200'),
the TVDirect dish, mounted on the house, would work with a Lynksis antenna
in it I think, but I don't know if a Lynksis hub can be used as a relay or
if it would work at 200' distance. (Have two Lynksis Gs and could buy an N).

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Gerry

The ball end of a small ball-peen hammer works well in cutting gaskets as
long as you use many light hammer blows around the edges and in the holes.
On heavy gasket material I only mark it with the hammer and then cut it with
a razor knife and snips.

I wanted to run one of my RC cars, but it wasn't getting any exhaust
pressure into the fuel tank. I noticed that the exhaust was leaking at
 the
header gasket, and I didn't have any of the $.50 gaskets on hand. My dad
had some gasket paper lying around, and it was up and running a few
 minutes
 later with a homemade gasket.

MB content: One of my '78 300D's was leaking oil at the front of the
engine, and some searching revealed that it was the vac pump gasket.
 Dad's
gasket paper came to the rescue once again, and it was as good as new. We
stamped that one out with a hammer using the surface of the pump, and the
center which we pumched out was used for some more RC header gaskets.

You will need a wireless bridge. Then, for the connection to your shop,
connect another wireless router to the bridge. You will have to configure
the bridge with a computer attached to it, then add the second router. There
are standalone bridges, or routers with bridge capabilities (USR only?).

Bridge mode is used to connect two isolated networks wirelessly. If this
feature is enabled, wireless clients will not be able to connect to the
Wireless MAXg Router. Bridging is used if you are trying to connect two
networks or two groups of wired clients, each with its own Wireless MAXg Router
or wireless access point, that cannot be conveniently connected using Ethernet
cabling. An example of this type of situation would be two homes that want to
share network resources without running cabling through their yards.

You will need a wireless bridge. Then, for the connection to your shop,
connect another wireless router to the bridge. You will have to
configure the bridge with a computer attached to it, then add the second
router. There are standalone bridges, or routers with bridge capabilities
 (USR only?).

They do that so the bolts don't intrude into the trunk cubby as much. Foolish

Why not? None of my electric appliances would have worked correctly, my TV was

I'd already scoped out a little house I could rent reasonably cheaply about 100
yards from the water. What did I need the trappings of my American life for?

Just went to their Web site and ran a quote. For a
16' container shipped from Tampa to Reno they wanted
roughly $5100.

Ouch. Then again, I have no idea what moving rates
are these days, either. Nothing was mentioned about
weight in the quote, either. I think I'll run a quote
for a 16' U-Haul to see what it compares to.

I like the idea of ditching everything before you

5 nights at Motel 6 is going to be something like $250 (assuming you can find
cheap hotels).
Food is going to be something like $40/day unless you make sandwiches so
another $200.

Its still going to be cheaper with the Uhaul but I'm not sure I'd do it...
Although we used Uhaul last year to move here and the truck was surprisingly
good. About a '95 F350. Musta had a honking v8 because it had plenty of power
even fully loaded. Transmission shifted fine too.
When I moved out of my parent's house in '99 the little Toyota Uhaul had almost
no reverse. We used my S15 nose to nose to push it up to the apartment building
to unload...

A 17' U-Haul is only $1446 in comparison, although
that does not include the cost of fuel and motels.
Figuring 300 gallons of fuel at 10/mpg and 3000 miles,
you're still under $1000 for fuel alone.

Granted, there is something to be said about having

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-25 Thread LWB250
The computers don't suck signals or bandwidth, for
that matter. They only create traffic on the network
when there is input or output on the network port.
There are packets that are used to ping the access
point from time to time, but they are pretty
insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Your Comcast connection is probably limited in
bandwidth well below what your access point or router
can handle, so wireless bandwidth is not an issue.

If you had a house full of computers and people were
gaming online, that would be one thing, but for 90% of
the typical consumer use, you're not going to know the
difference if there was one or 15 computers on your
wireless system.

I run both a B and G system at home, only because I
have a few machines that are B only. The drawback of
running a G system is that if you have an A or B
client, speeds drop down to that level for everyone.
Quite honestly, I can't tell a difference.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-25 Thread Jim Cathey
i presume i have a finite amount of signal from comcast. i want to
 run
many computers on that signal, basically having a computer in every
 room of
the house. if i used a G system, each computer would suck more signal
 than
if i use a B system. so to be able to add more computers without
overloading the system, i prefer B to G

Faulty logic. If B or G is faster than what you get at your
upstream feed (almost a certitude, I'd say) then you won't see
any real difference due to their speed capabilities. Any single
node could suck the feed dry, in other words.

Choose based on different reasons.

Re: [MBZ] ditching stuff (was Re: OT:PODS)

Hi Curt, You wroteplan was to sell 90% of what I owned
I've always loved sailing and my dream was to sail away and spend my
life in the Carribbean or South Pacific. One quote from a famous sailor
said something to the effect of I never realized I needed so little to be
happy.

My idea was to sell the house and everything inside it and buy a bigger
boat to make ocean sailing a little safer (a 27' isn't big when out of sight
of land) but being away from family for long periods prevented us from doing
it. Not seeing our grandchildren grow up wasn;t something we were willing to
give up.

Then my health went downhill and made it a moot point. The disease I
have is not curable so we manage the pain thru the magic world of chemicals.
Being in foreign lands trying to get narcotic pain meds is not something as
smooth as it is here. When you look at the details, you begin to really
understand what an amazing country this is. As it is we had to sell the
boat we had becase I was unable to enjoy it - being on a bigger boat needing
more maintanence on an even bigger piece of water meant we made the right
decision. ;-)Things would not have been much fun being in paradise and
unable to get the proper medical treatent.

Oh well, it was a nice dream and we found that exploring the Chesapeake
Bay was a great way to spend a few years.

Hmm... Barbados - sounds pretty good. ;-)

I had a job offer in Barbados once. My plan was to sell 90% of what I
 owned.
Why not? None of my electric appliances would have worked correctly, my TV
was the wrong format, same with VCR and DVD.
I'd already scoped out a little house I could rent reasonably cheaply
about 100 yards from the water. What did I need the trappings of my
 American life for?

My wife to be quashed the idea, said she couldn't go that far from her
family. Periodically when things are really hectic I'll remind her of the
 chance she wasted...

I like the idea of ditching everything before you
move. The minimalist thing appeals to me.

two dishes can connect at several miles IMO.

That's all. Plug your printer into it plus the cable from the cable modem. No

Interesting. If I didn't have several Linksys hubs already, I'd try it.
$18 is pretty cheap for anything from Apple. They must be changing their
pricing policies. The high price of their stuff has been what's always
