Re: [MBZ] Motor Week on Speed Testing Dodge Sprinter this week

2007-12-07 Thread Kevin Kraly
I thought it was a five.

My '06 model was the last of the 5ers. The '07's are equipped with a 3.0L
150HP CDI V6 which has 288LbFt of torque compared to the 242LbFt of the 5er.
I wouldn't mind testing one out with my boat behind it, but no, I'm not
trading the '07 Dodge for it. :-) I wish that they would have used the
more powerful version of that V6 diesel that's used in the Jeep grand
cherokee.

Re: [MBZ] trunk strut....?

2007-12-07 Thread Kevin Kraly
Just springs. That is preferable to struts, because they pretty much never
fail.

The rear window struts on the '91 and '95 Isuzu Rodeos in the family have
all failed, but the trunk on the old 300SD still stays open. Both of them
use nearly 2 quarts between 3Kmi oil changes at 200K miles while the old
300SD at 266K hasn't even used a quart in the 2.5K miles since i've had it!
It's things like this that ensure that there will be a Mercedes in my
driveway as long as I can work on it.

Probably need clothes and toys. You may have a point about 'help'.

In Michigan, if you became a foster parent they would pay you for it.

If you adopted a 'specialneeds' kid, there would be subsidies.
Here, it seems like 'special needs' can include any kid that's too old

mentioned my niece's adoption (now failed) of a special needs teenager.
IIRC, that subsidized adoption paid $937 a month tax free. Three payments

[MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
About this time of year, my glow plug system gets a mind of its own. Even
Marshall was never able to figure it out via theoretical troubleshooting.

After the temp gets into the low teens, the glow plug light functions only
intermittently. Sometimes it lights up and sometimes it doesn't.

I *think* the plugs are working, because last year I had a voltmeter hooked
up and I could see the load when the plugs are on. (For those who might be
wondering, I've experienced same symptoms on two different glow plug
relays.) When the light didn't work yesterday, I pre-glowed for 45 seconds
and then cranked until it started. The car had been warmed up on the ride to
work but had cooled down some during the four hours of sitting in the
parking lot.

Here's what I am thinking of doing: hard wire +12VDC to the glow plugs and
install a switch so I can manually control the duration of pre-glow (and
know that it is indeed getting heat to the plugs). Weren't some of the
pre-W123 diesels wired up this way? This would be a winter-only
modification, going back to using the glow plug relay during the non-winter
months.

Anyone done this before? What sort of switch should I use? How heavy of a
wire?

Ours is 24x36x8, roughly, and is deep enough that you can park one

Doing your own electrical you can take your time and make it
just the way you want. I put in a lot of circuits, one above
for the door and hardtop lift outlets, one for each wall,
three lighting circuits (four, counting the attic space),
two welder/range/RV/generator circuits, and a 220 or two
for space heaters/tools. There are outlets on each side of

on either side of the windows, and three on each side wall.
GFI outlets on the outside at three corners. However,
according to my wife our garage will never be done. I still
need to insulate, and sheet-rock it. Then paint, I suppose.
She has cause to be concerned.

Even unfinished mine was pretty expensive. That's because

[MBZ] OT: How much does it cost to build a garage?

2007-12-07 Thread John Robbins
I'm kinda looking around to 'upgrade' houses, and in this area it is
very difficult to find one with a garage. Well, in my price range at
least. So I was just curious what kind of options I have as far as
building a garage. I would do all the electrical, finishing, etc inside
the garage. So just the cost of slab, structure, roof, siding, door

I would like a 1.5 or 2.5 car garage. Basically, room for a small
'shop' on the side and the ability to open the doors on the car without
fear of hitting a wall. It needs to be tall enough for the hood to open
fully upright (10'?), and it would be nice if it was tall enough for a
lift (12-14'?).

I'm in north Mississippi if that helps the pricing out.

Any other tips, tricks, etc?

Thanks!
John

If you adopted a 'specialneeds' kid, there would be subsidies.
Here, it seems like 'special needs' can include any kid that's too old

IIRC, that subsidized adoption paid $937 a month tax free. Three payments

Re: [MBZ] Funeral and kids

2007-12-07 Thread Rich Thomas
Some more advice, if you want it. These kids have been through a
considerable trauma, and from your description of their situation prior
to that they have also been kinda out of the mainstream, in ways that
are also traumatic. That is going to weigh heavily on them (and you) as
you work to get them into your proper way of life.

I would suggest checking with your local school system for psychological
evaluations to see how they can/will fit into the school system. I do
not have a lot of faith in public school systems -- the Catholic schools
seem to have a much better success. You might want to see if there are
any around that might want to take on these kids, and they will likely
be very accommodating to the circumstances as far as payments go. That
is a gift to the children.

You might also want to check with the local Dept of Child Services (or
whatever it is called there) about psychological support for the
children. They WILL need that help, and there is nothing wrong with
seeking it or getting it, and it will help make all your lives easier.
There might also be other services for THEM that will help them adjust
and you to take care of them. You are a taxpayer, this is a
taxpayer-funded service, it is not charity so don't think of it as that.

If there are things that people offer you, or want to give for the
children, accept them graciously in the spirit in which they are
offered. You will pay this back many times over to many other people
when you help these children, by whatever means you can provide or comes
your way. It is a loan with a long-term payback, and people are helping
you do it so they will get the benefits back too. My fear is that the
children are not able to overcome these events in their lives, and will
need more intervention as they get older, which will be more difficult
for everyone. Every bit of help is for them, now is better than later.
Kids are very resilient but they need lots of help to be that way, as I
am sure you know.

Best wishes for all. Your Benz community is supporting you.

 non-winter months.

Anyone done this before? What sort of switch should I use? How heavy of
 a wire?

The 60 amp fuse in the glow plug relay shows what kind of current to
expect. You'd want at least 10 gauge wire (considering that it's on for
only a short period), maybe even 8 or 6 gauge. Your best bet would be a
Ford-type starting relay in the engine compartment and then small wires
to a switch in the passenger compartment.

That said, a better solution might be to put a bulb (or LED w/resistor) in
one of the unused light locations in the lower strip of the instrument
cluster and wire it to one of the glow plugs and ground. It would
illuminate when the glow plugs have power.

I blocked it out. But it was somewhere north of $80k,

That was for a shell, with doors and openers and a roof.
At first I was running them off extension cords from the

If you have a clamp-on DC ammeter, and you really should

check the plug currents to see that they're all about the
same. It's not a particularly cheap tool, but it's very
useful for glow plug, battery, and starter problem diagnosis.
(A 30-0-30 dashboard ammeter will also do the plug job,
with a bit more work. They're pretty cheap.)

That's a more expensive tool than the simple voltmeter
you use to diagnose a series plug system, which I presume
you don't have. (Feel free to correct us if you do.)

You are a very creative and intelligent man, Craig. Great idea. That would
bypass whatever portion of the glow plug relay that says light up the
lightbulb.

Re: [MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-07 Thread Jim Cathey
Here's what I am thinking of doing: hard wire +12VDC to the glow plugs
 and
install a switch so I can manually control the duration of pre-glow
 (and
know that it is indeed getting heat to the plugs). Weren't some of the
pre-W123 diesels wired up this way?

The 115's have a pull-knob to switch the rather hefty
glow plug current, and another plug in series behind
a salt-shaker grille in the dash so you can watch it
(and presumably them) get red hot. Crude, but effective.

What car? Most of them have current-sensing relays
that look for imbalance in the plugs' currents and won't
light the lamp if things aren't right. Especially if
#1 is out of whack. I use a clamp-on DC ammeter to
check for balance in the parallel system. One plug
out of whack can do it, two certainly can. I had a
190D #1 plug that drew 2x the normal current. The car
started just fine, but the light said no good.

My guess is that you have at least one plug that's
out of spec and the relays are reacting to that.
The relay uses a current transformer with three
turns (say) for the #2-4 plug power balanced against
one turn (in reverse) for #1 power. If these
currents aren't balanced the light doesn't function
normally.

Keep in mind that the light has NOTHING to do with
power to the plugs. It is a suggestive timer and
diagnostic device. If the GP relay's working at
all it's supplying power when the key is on until
you hit start, or the global timeout occurs at
1.5-2 minutes.

Most GP relay failures seem to be in the light
circuit, not in the GP circuit. You could try
counting potatoes before starting. My son brushes
his teeth for the duration of two hummed Happy
Birthdays. You could do worse!

You can build mortarless concrete block walls very quickly and easily done.
My wife and I built our 32' X 60' X 10' basement walls 11 years ago and came
within 1/2 both level and square. Our previous building experience was a
leaky dog house.

After the wall is up, we troweled (both sides) on a product from Quikcrete
called Surface Bonding Material IIRC. Kept it damp for three days with a
battery operated timer and lawn sprinklers, that's it. We would build the
wall off the truck until it got too high.

A ball park cost for a 10' X 10' wall is about $400.

2007-12-07 Thread Mitch Haley
Jim Cathey wrote:

I blocked it out. But it was somewhere north of $80k,

Around here, materials packages for an 8' high stud wall start at
about $2000 plus foundation and interior wallcoverings for a one car,
and quickly go up around $5-6k for a four car. Building a foundation
3 1/2' below grade level to put the stud walls on adds quite a bit
to the total price.

I priced a 30x56x12 foot post frame shell. Steel siding and roofing,
the quote from the lumberyard, including 96 bags of sackrete for the
footings, 4' truss spacing, 39lb snow load, came out to almost exactly
$10k. For $100 more, I could get a 5yd load from the local concrete
company, put two yards into the footings, and have them do the
approach to the garage door with the rest. I contacted a local
contractor to see what he would charge to put it up, and he quoted
me $5 a square foot, or $8k. By the time I paid for insulation and
interior, and a concrete floor, I could be looking at $30-35k, or
about $20 a square foot.

In Mississippi, I bet they would let you use the same trusses that we
space at 4', and space the poles and trusses at 9'. Check the post frame
kits at Menards.com. The standard packages are going to be your minimum
possible cost, not compliant with Michigan building codes, but they might
be legal outside of the snow belt. Menard's post frame kits as priced on
the web page have 9' post and truss spacing, with smaller posts than my
code requires. (We need 6x6 posts for a 12' high by 30' wide, Menard's specs
4x6) The good news is that in store prices are usually about 10% lower than
internet prices.

You CAN put a floor plate hoist under a 10' ceiling, the posts are ususally
about 9 1/2 feet high, but if you don't stop when the car roof hits the ceiling
it's going to get crunched. And forget about putting the car up with the
hood open. If you aren't going to insulate the garage you can make the
ceiling just about any height, as long as you use 8' or 9' truss spacing,
and lift the car between two trusses with the doors closed.

If you just want a workshop, 16' x 24' might be enough, if you want to
store your cars indoors, you'll want more space.

A friend I work with wanted to buy a Tuff Shed to put in his back yard.
Something kind of large with two separated areas: one for storage and one
for a kind of craft room. Several other dudes we work with convinced him
that we could build a nicer one for the same money (note: the other
dudes are nuclear, electrical, and mechanical engineers).
You can see where this is going, I'm sure. When it was done the shed was
nicer than most houses in the area (well above code electrically, surround
sound, wired for dish, plumbing, hvac, tiled roof). One large temperature
controlled storage room, a man's crapper (as his wife says) with a 19 LCD
TV mounted directly ahead at eye level as you sit, and a large mixed use
room. It is sweet. My pal spent well above what he would have spent on a
suitable Tuff Shed. On the other hand, he has a nice place to go when he is

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
I've been hangin' around in here for so many years that most folks
*know*that I have a '77 240D.

As for troubleshooting the problem, I've spent scores of hours and lots of
bandwidth in past years trying to figure out what's happening. I am now in
winter survival mode, since I love close enough to my office to work to
work if necessary but don't really want to do so.

Also, the fact that the problem is intermittent and only happens when it is
so cold that troubleshooting isn't an appealing prospect helps to complicate
things. Whatever is happening is definitely temperature related and it only
happens in ugly temps.

intermittently. Sometimes it lights up and sometimes it doesn't.

I *think* the plugs are working, because last year I had a
  voltmeter hooked
up and I could see the load when the plugs are on. (For those who
  might be
wondering, I've experienced same symptoms on two different glow plug
relays.) When the light didn't work yesterday, I pre-glowed for 45
  seconds

  the ride to
work but had cooled down some during the four hours of sitting in the
  parking lot.

Here's what I am thinking of doing: hard wire +12VDC to the glow
  plugs and
install a switch so I can manually control the duration of pre-glow
  (and
know that it is indeed getting heat to the plugs). Weren't some of the
pre-W123 diesels wired up this way? This would be a winter-only
modification, going back to using the glow plug relay during the
  non-winter
  months.

Anyone done this before? What sort of switch should I use? How
  heavy of a
  wire?

[MBZ] Frankenheap clockery

2007-12-07 Thread Jim Cathey
This evening I pulled the clock, and found that the reason the hands
were getting wonky and that it had finally stopped was that one of the
plastic gear axle nubs had snapped off. I've dealt with this before,
on my 560 SL. I got out a small drill (PCB type) and drilled
(carefully, by hand) down the center of the axle. I then cut a piece
of wire and pushed it into the hole. Insty-hub! We'll see if it
works, but at least the clock can be set again. The worst problem was
that I had to drill out the brass rivets that hold the front plate
on. Screws are too bulky to put it back together, so I ran wire
around through the holes and crimped it down. Seems to be holding
good enough. The plate is locked into position by plastic pegs that
are still intact, the wire just ties the plate to the pegs.

As always, getting these quartz clocks apart and back together again
is the worst part. The bezel is crimped on.

If you've had the car for 15K miles and not done a valve adjustment,
it's due. And that's assuming one had been done just before you

But, in this case, my first suspect would be the glow plugs, based on

the light pipe and the bulb compartment with aluminum foil. The pictures
attached show the process. The only difficult, fiddly thing is prying off
the light pipe covers without breaking anything. It can be done. As
someone told me about wheel bearings, you have all day to do it.

With these modifications, my W123 instrument cluster lights are more than
 adequately bright.

 Chuck,
I'm still alive and well. I have been very active doing my work
for FEMA, in fact I recently returned home from San Diego where I
was deployed to assist in the recovery process of folks affected by
 the recent fires.
I often think about all the folks on the mailing lists. I just
don't have the time to be active on the mailing lists. Between FEMA
deployments, I keep myself busy performing many unrelated functions
as well as assisting in the training of other Disaster Housing
 Inspectors.
It's nice to know that I am remembered and missed. Give my best to
all and also my wishes for all to have a wonderful holiday season.

Here's a photo that you can pass around if you so desire. It was
taken by a Whitehouse photographer on May 9 2007 in Greensburg Ks
at the Disaster Recovery Center set up by FEMA. The photo I am
sending was sent via e-mail to my supervisor and forwarded to me. I
was also sent the original photo, stamped on the back from the
Whitehouse, which shows a little more detail of the Secret Service

smoothes out and runs and starts fine until the next morning. I have had
the injectors replaced [ a few of them twice] and of course by the time I

Re: [MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-07 Thread Hendrik Fay
I've done that to a Nissan Diesel and it worked very well. From memory I
wired it into the glow plug controller so I wouldn't need a heavy wire
or switch.
However my problem was that the controller was not fully cycling and
would switch off half way into the glow period.
If you are going the direct route use a relay, similar to those used to
switch on/off spotlights.

Hendrik
only two Diesels now and neither use glowplugs

Wonko the Sane wrote:

How heavy of a
 wire?

Do you have a W126 300sD radiator? Mine isn't leaking yet, but it's been
patched around the overflow hose.

Recently [for about two months] my otherwise beautifully running '81 300SD
has been a bear to start in the morning. I know that is relative and
nothing like someone in a cold area might experience, but it is quite a bit
different than when it is warm. If I don't hold a bit of pressure on the
pedal it will stall,; it 'bucks' and smokes for about 8 seconds, then
smoothes out and runs and starts fine until the next morning. I have had
the injectors replaced [ a few of them twice] and of course by the time I
get to my Indy it is fine. Does this sound like symptoms of needing a valve
adjustment? I suppose I need to leave it there overnight and let him see it
 in the morning. Other suggestions?

Have you tested the glowplugs? Sounds like a classic case of bad ones.

If you are sure all of the glow plugs are fine, that is what I would start
with. You are not using thick in the cold temps oil are you? Assume the
starter is spinning fast enough?
