Never did find that B-52 in the lake http://wikimapia.org/151809/ but
apparently there is not much left to see, did find a little park where
the NVA left a pile of anti aircraft weapons and guidance radars and
such. Apparently the B-52 in the lake was shot down in Dec 72.
Thankfully I have never been on the receiving (or giving) end of a
bombing raid but it must be sheer hell. Apparently at the war museum in
London they have a simulator that recreates what it was like during the
blitz, mate of mine had a go but didn't last the full session.
I suppose Vietnam was the hot war the cold war needed not to get turned

What sort of camera are you using, I take it is a digital one. Some of
the early model digital cameras are really hard to get into focus.
Close ups are a real pain with a budget digital, however spending 1000's

Anyway I was only having a bit of a dig and I couldn't do much better

OPEC is very shy of telling exactly how much they have left, so as

Also China and other parts of the developing world are starting to

There may well be oil reserves under the oceans but getting at them
will require technology that is still beyond us.
I suppose it is in the interest of OPEC to not oversupply, cause
once their oil runs out it's back to herding camels in the desert.

Actually, deep water drilling is getting fairly common. It was new back in
2001 when I worked for Unocal (Now part of Chevron), but Chevron recently
drilled a well in 7000 feet of water and 20,000 feet of seabed. That opens
up a LOT of area for access. It does take about 10 years to get it drilled
and on production.

Hey Wilton - would you care to comment further on how you made the wooden key
tops? I have been toying with the
idea of doing the same.
Essentially, so far, I have routed out half depth in each side wooden piece
with a dremel and planned to glue the
two pieces of wood together. Initially I thought 2 part epoxy but then was
wondering about using Gorilla Glue which
says it will bond metal and wood. I also wondered about drilling the key where
it will be in the wood to perhaps
give the glue a better bite on it. I also wondered about putting a small brass
rivet through the whole thing to tie
it together along with the glue.

The vast majority of Southerners did not own slaves and did not favor

war was about the North's tendency to try to dictate to other folks how they

I was over at Sams earlier this morning, took a look at various panels.
Contrast ratio ran all the way from 1000:1 on an Olevia 50some to
25000:1 (or something like that) on a Sony that was a bit smaller, with
prices to match. The Olevia looked like a washed-out watercolor, while
the Sony was razor-sharp. The Samsung I looked at was about 1:1 and
looked pretty good. I am not sure how well the eye can see the 2.5:1
difference between the better panels, but the 10:1 between the Samsung
and Olevia was extremely noticeable. There was an older woman there
looking at a Samsung, I mentioned I thought they were about the best
value, and she agreed, and was shopping prices/sizes.

YMMV.

LCD monitors can digitally enhance the contrast ratio much farther than the

(how quick the individual pixel can turn on and off). The lower the number,
the less Haley's Comet trail you will see on the screen.

Don't need to spilt the blank and glue it together around the key.
I started with a blank slightly bigger and thicker, of course, than finished

each side of the key top itself to square-up the wings and to slightly
reduce the required width of slot to be routed into the wood blank. Note
that thickness of the key is 1/8 inch. Using 1/8 inch dia. drill and
grinder bits, I used Dremmel to rout 7/8 inch wide slot into leading edge of
the blank, being careful to cut parallel to sides, etc. 'Measured depth by
sight, small probes and by trial-and-error insertion of the key into the
slot. Because of my still slightly shaky hands, I ended with slot slightly
bigger than 1/8 X  7/8.  I secured key in the slot with 2-part epoxy;
appropriate, thick glue should work, also. I say thick, 'cause ya wanta
make sure all voids around the key are filled. With wood blank secured in
small vice, I pushed epoxy into the slot, trying to have enough to squeeze
out around the key but not so much to make a terrible mess. With epoxy in
the slot, I pushed the key into it; 'had to add a little bit of epoxy around
the key to completely fill the slot. Make sure key is aligned properly in
the blank - sight all 3 directions - vertically, side-to-side and front to
back. If necessary, secure it in position temporarily with masking tape
while epoxy cures. Next day, I used file, rasp, sandpaper, etc., to finish
new wood top to appropriate size. I stopped with a top slightly thicker
than originals because I didn't wanta leave the wood too thin on each side
of the key. I drilled key ring hole smaller than orig. to help maintain
integrity of the wood, also, though I'm sure hole can be bigger than mine.

Actually, I do believe I'm a pretty reasonable guy, but I also know that
 the
War of Northern Aggression was not fought by the South to continue
 slavery.
The vast majority of Southerners did not own slaves and did not favor
slavery. By the time the North invaded the South, slavery was in decline
and would have ended anyway because it didn't make economic sense. No,
 the
war was about the North's tendency to try to dictate to other folks how
 they
were going to run their business, kinda like the revolutionary war was
 about
the British telling the colonists how they were going to run their
business...and kinda like liberals think they can tell the rest of us what
to think and how we should handle our business. It's about freedom.

[MBZ] Fuel price today

2008-02-29 Thread Timothy Robinson
Last fuel purchase was 01/26 @$3.2597 per gallon on the daily driver '85
300D. At my routine 14 miles per day and accumulated 468 miles on the
odometer, I figured I'd beat the little reserve warning light and fill
today.

Price at the pump was $3.699. $0.44 up in a month? When did that happen?

I decided to digest that and wait until this evening to fill. I stopped at a
station closer into town, expecting perhaps a higher price since it was at a
main exit to I-40. Fuel was $3.459 per gallon, $0.24 cheaper.

(My Pall Mall non-filters were $4.79 instead of $3.38 so any fuel savings
were lost in the convenience of buying cigs at that stop.) So much for
driving 30 miles to save a nickle on a loap of bread!

[MBZ] OT We are in trouble

2008-02-29 Thread Timothy Robinson
A friend with Delta forwrded this today for amusement:

A  Washington, DC, airport ticket agent offers some examples of why our
country is in trouble!

          1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman ask for an aisle seat so
that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.
          (On an airplane!)

          2. I got a call from a candidate's staffer, who wanted to go to
Cape Town. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport
information, and then she interrupted me with, I'm not trying to make you
look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts.  Without trying to make her
look stupid, I calmly explained, Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Cape town is
in Africa.² Her response - click.

           3. A senior Vermont Congressman called, furious about a Florida
package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said
he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that's not possible,
since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, Don't lie to me, I
looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state! (OMG

          4. I got a call from a lawmaker's wife who asked, Is it possible
to see England from Canada? I said, No. She said, But they look so close
on the map. (OMG, again!)

           5. An aide for a cabinet member once called and asked if he could
rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had
only a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a
car, he said, I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to
drive between gates to save time. (Ag)

          6. An Illinois Congresswoman called last week. She needed to know
how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at8:30 are got to
Chicago at 8:33 am. I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois,
but she couldn't understand the concept of time zones.  Finally, I told her
the plane went fast, and she bought that.

           7. A New York lawmaker called and asked, Do airlines put your
physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to
whom? I said, No, why do you ask? She replied, Well, when I checked in
with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I'm
overweight. I think that's very rude! After putting her on hold for a
minute while I looked into it (I was laughing). I came back and explained
the city code for Fresno, CA is (FAT - Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline
was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.

          8. A Senator's aide called to inquire about a trip package to
Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, Would it be cheaper
to fly to California, and then take the train to Hawaii?²

          9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman who asked,
How do I know which plane to get on? I asked him what exactly he meant, to
which he replied, I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these
planes have numbers on them.

          10. A lady Senator called and said, I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola,
Florida. Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes? I asked
if she meant fly to Pensacola, Fl. on a commuter plane. She said, Yeah,
whatever, smarty!

          11. A senior Senator called and had a question about the documents
he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about
passports, I reminded him that he needed a visa. Oh, no I don't. I've been
to China many times and never had to have one of those. I double checked
and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said,
Look, I've been to China four times and every time they have accepted my
American Express!

          12. A New Mexico Congresswoman called to make reservations, I
want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York.  I was at a loss for words.
Finally, I said, Are you sure that's the name of the town? Yes, what
flights do you have? replied the lady. After some searching, I came back
with, I'm sorry,      ma'am, I've looked up every airport code in the
country and can't find a Rhino anywhere. The lady retorted, Oh, don't be
silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map! So I scoured a map of
the state of New York and finally offered, You don't mean Buffalo, do you?
The reply?  Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.

Now you know why the Government is in the shape that it's in!

[MBZ] Wood key tops B-52's

2008-02-29 Thread wilton strickland
Hendrik, we lost 2% or 15 of the 750 B-52 sorties in the Hanoi area during
those 11 nights of Dec 72, when we finally fought that war as it should have
been many years before (if we were going to be involved). Our leaders were
expecting to lose 10%. I'm still amazed that we could fly through so much
AAA (antiaircraft artillery) and SAM's (surface-to-air missiles) and keep
right on going to do it all over again the next night, etc. The AAA reached
to only 29k feet, though, and we were at 35k to 37k, but the sky at our
altitude was still so full of SAM's plus zig-zagging B-52's, I feel
extremely lucky to still be around. Did you see the sky over Baghdad on
CNN from the hotel window the first night of Gulf War I? The sky over Hanoi
and around us was that in multiples, it seemed.

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2008-02-29 Thread Jim Cathey
This morning I turned the battery tray around in the derusting bucket.

I bought a stronger throttle spring today and installed it. It's able
to overcome the stiffness of the new throttle damper. If it should
turn out to be too weak I can put it down the middle of the original
spring and use them both together. I installed the intake manifold.
Much fun trying to figure out where things go. When I tried to
install the blowby hosing I found that I was short a piece, so I had
to re-use the 'Y' connection piece, at least until I can get another
one ordered. Part number 601 016 04 81, there's also a v13 molded
into it. The old one is split at each opening so I had to duct-tape
it sealed. That's lovely.

The installation of the vibration dampening brackets for the injector
lines took the most time. Getting those plastic clips on was not
easy, and I had to take apart the throttle linkage in order to get
everything assembled. I have extra plastic clips left over, too. The
rubber bumpers themselves were NLA, but the old ones were still 'live'
enough to work. The throttle linkage now works properly, and feels
damped due to the hydraulic cylinder. It returns to the idle position
properly.

I removed the extraneous vacuum plumbing, replacing a three-way
splitter with a two-way from the EGR system. One vacuum feed line
goes directly to the intake butterfly actuator, the other (through a
restricting orifice) goes to the car's interior. Things are pretty
neat and tidy under the hood now, without all the extraneous vacuum
plumbing. The EGR relay module is nicely accessible behind the
battery, it should be easy to remove and operate on if my throttle
butterfly engine braking idea ever pans out.

I then vacuumed out the battery tray area, and chased the threads on
the studs. I re-tapped the nuts too, and put the rusty ones into the
bucket with the tray itself. I'll probably re-use them, mostly
because I don't have any spares in that style.

The car is pretty much ready to start, sans cooling system. I want to
do a final bleed on the injectors (the lines to which are only
finger-tight) and see if it'll start before I put in the cooling
system. If there's a problem I'd need to take it back out again
anyway, so no sense potentially wasting work. It's also still too
cold to do with only water for coolant, and I don't want to risk
wasting my G-05 until I'm sure the car will run. Tomorrow?

I don't like your chances much with that sort of camera, I have a Canon
A510 and close close ups are pretty hard. Perhaps there are some tips in
the operators manual.
The Canon is a good mid budget camera, easy to use and pumps out
reasonable quality pics.
Anyway I guess some of the photo buffs on the list may have some clues
on how to get good close up pictures.

WW2 might well not have happened because Germany might have won WW1 or a
better peace might have been reached, with no winner or loser declared
and no crippling war payments being forced on Germany, which led to a
collapse of the Weimar republic and the rise of the NAZI's.
It might well have been a case of because the North is supporting the

The centre console on my 280SEL (with column shifter) has a fifth switch.
It looks exactly like the single rocker switch in the rear door. The extra
switch is located between the two rows of double window switches. The car
doesn't have a sunroof, and in any case I believe sunroof switches were
normally on the dash. Could this be the antenna height switch (the car has an
electric antenna, but I doubt it is the original because it isn't a
Hirschmann) or is there some other option that I don't even know I have!?

in the Middle East contained in the oil shales in Canada and certain U.S.
Western states. Now that the price of crude has exceeded a critical price,
international oil companies are mining it on a large scale in Canada. I
read an article about life in the Canadian mining areas; probably in the
Wall Street Journal, the Economist, or the Smithsonian magazine. When the
oil shale refineries start producing in large quantities, the price of crude
will drop, but never to previous low levels since the cost of extracting oil
from shale is considerably more than pumping it, according to the mining
engineer.

And would cost a lot of money.
I saw a program a while back on how they are getting oil out clay up in
 Canada or somewhere.
To make this work the scale of the operation is enormous.

Actually, deep water drilling is getting fairly common. It was new back

2001 when I worked for Unocal (Now part of Chevron), but Chevron recently
drilled a well in 7000 feet of water and 20,000 feet of seabed. That
 opens
up a LOT of area for access. It does take about 10 years to get it
 drilled
 and on production.

Don't hold your breath on oil shale. The energy and water requirements to
process the shale and recover the oil are too daunting at present.

The vast majority of Southerners did not own slaves and did not favor

the 300se generator light is not coming on and there is no charging.
Anything to check before replacing the generator ?

The bulb itself. Car won't charge if the bulb is burnt out.
