Re: [MBZ] OT: anyone have one of those Asus Eee micro-notebooks? - BT keyboard
I have toyed with getting a phone with a large screen, like my Ipaq [240 x 320, and can be oriented any all four directions,] but never been wiling to pay for the service. I send ATT $25 every three months to keep my number and have it available in an emergency. There are a lot of BT keyboards available. My main reason for plugging the iGO Stowaway is that on my used keyboard the stand broke a few months ago and they just sent me a replacement. No charge, no questions about if I was the original owner, or 'this unit is out of production' comments. They just replaced it. I like that sort of service. It is a bit of a hassle to set up and connect the BT keyboard and mouse, but it does make the experience of using it for writing much easier. The main problem is that wile each of the components fit easily into a pocket, with the keyboard that is all that will fit in the pocket, and I dont think any of them are very appreciative of the torque the a rear pocket would put on them. Great investment for a limited number of occasions and users. I carry a bag that holds all my extras for the computer and all my diabetic supplies, when I remember to take it with me. My parents elderly neighbor has a older body style Grand Marquis/Crown Vic that he is trying to sell. My father doesn't know whether it is a Ford or Mercury and said that it is somewhere between 1996-2000. So, he hasn't been much help in the detail department. BUT, the neighbor's children live in South Carolina and want to get rid of the car. The one thing my father did know was that it only had 39,000 miles. I don't know much about these cars other than I have mixed stories about the Crown Vic with the P71 police package. I was looking at one of these before and I don't remember what anyone said about them. I might be able to buy this cheap. Does anyone have any experience with one of these (or have a parent with one). I am only 35 - so I am not really ready for one of these, but if the price is right, I can drive for a year or two. With a hose clamp behind a slight bubble flare, it's not going anywhere. Alternately, you could do it like brake line and use flare fittings. That should be good for 2000psi or so. [MBZ] For you engineers
An engineer was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess. He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week. The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want. Again the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me? The engineer said, Look I'm an engineer. Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) RV Mog in ATL
1113 model number tells it is a truck, as does the OM352 engine. that engine is a HD truck engine. The 1113 was the small end of the MB made in Brazil trucks sold in the USA 20 some years ago. The 1316 was the heavy end of the line. I may have this backwards, but I think the 11 was the metric ton capacity GVW? at the 13 was related to the Kw power of the engine. maybe 130 Kw? while the 1316 had a heavier payload and a more powerful engine. 130Kw is roughly 175 HP. while 16 would be 160 Kw or roughly equivalent to 215 HP. It consists of two stainless and bronze filter housings, lots of iron, brass, copper, and plastic parts. Of possible note is that the filter assemblies were salvaged from a photo lab water temp control panel - and is old. I soaked the assemblies overnight in a bucket of citric acid to clean off the old scale deposits - they came out sparkling clean looking. The filters are carbon block, 5 micron nominal, and new. The water now tastes oily and metallic - even after running it for 15 minutes. I had a nice snap on that would do normal and double flares. They only have double flare dies for us sizes, not metric, but I was able to make double flares with practice. The last time i needed double flares, I used my cheap flare tool and just bought the 1/8 double flare die from snappy. it worked to make double flares for MB 110 brake lines. Re: [MBZ] OT: anyone have one of those Asus Eee micro-notebooks?
Allan - for a super compact travel machine I am still very happy with my IPAQ Rx5915. I wear it on a belt clip and use the touch pad for short messages, and have a Stowaway iGo Bluetooth keyboard [with built in stand for keeping the IPAQ at the proper angle] and mouse for more intensive writing and editing [I am currently into a 21 page document written entirely on this pocket pc, and have done several 10 page ones.] In addition it has a full feature TomTom built in and mp3 with a decent stereo output [I also use a Bluetooth stereo headset, but wired is easier] and dont use that very often anyway. Were I to take the time and trouble it is also capable of playing movies, but I have only done that a few times and never gotten more than a half or quarter screen shot, though full screen is available. It has about 2 gig built in file memory plus the main memory, and I have a 4 gig SD card for storing all the extra stuff. I keep a couple of hundred full length novels, 6 or 8 full length movies, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and Outlook, and a dozen or so other apps and games. It has built in WiFi as well as Bluetooth, and were I to have a Bluetooth cell phone it should be able to surf the web as well as connect to use IE and Outlook from anywhere there is cell service as well as using the hotspots as I do now. The PC interface lets everything in Outlook automatically update every time I sync with my computer. It is far from perfect, but for a few hundred dollars I can set up a portable office at a café or library or my dining room [if all the household computers are busy] and have everything I need. It's great for travelling, which I did before I retired. I bought all of it used on eBay, but do recommend the warranty as I have had a couple of them go bad within a year, and they were replaced free. I have often wished for a tablet PC or laptop, but this is pretty good and a lot less cumbersome to transport. [MBZ] flare tool
'Reminds me of a night in Greenland in 1978. I was Director of Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, now known as Kangerlussuaq. Early evening I was in my room reading and listening to classical music; phone rang; Base Commander asked me to go over to Officer's Club and talk to a NASA guy about a problem with one of their aircraft. They were there with a Cessna Citation and a Boeing 707 doing high altitude atmospheric research with National Science Foundation. At the club, Base Commander introduced me to the NASA guy. Base Commander knew that I had also been an aircraft and engine mechanic (maintenance crew chief) before I was commissioned and went to B-52's. NASA guy had just discovered a problem with the braking (or steering - can't be sure which now) system on forward landing gear of their Cessna Citation. A small, U-shaped piece of stainless steel 3000 psi hydraulic line was cracked and leaking. They needed to fly one more mission with the Cessna to be finished for the season. If they couldn't find or make a replacement for the part locally, they were going to fly the 707 to Los Angeles and back over the next coupla days to get a part. After the NASA guy described the problem, I told him that I may be able to help - I'd certainly try - I don't give up very easily. We jumped in my truck and went to the hanger to look at the leaking part. It was a U-shaped piece of 1/4 inch stainless steel tubing with each leg of the U less than 2 inches long with a flare and a compression nut on each end. I vaguely remembered that I had seen some 1/4 inch stainless steel tubing in a hanger that was used by the NY Air National Guard for their summer C-130 operations on the Greenland ice cap. We removed the offending part and took it with us to the National Guard hanger. In the hanger, I could see a bundle of the appropriate stainless steel tubing several feet away on the inside of a shop secured by an 8 feet tall chainlink fence topped by strands of barbed wire. We drug a work table from across the hanger up to the fence; I jumped up on the table and went over the fence onto another table inside the fence, walked across the shop, got a piece of the tubing and stuck it thru the fence to the NASA guy. 'Back up on the table inside the shop and back over the fence. Still not sure we'd be able to make a proper part, I stopped by to ask my Danish civilian contractor chief engineer if he may like to help. Years before, he'd been chief engineer on Danish sea-going merchant vessels. He was VERY enthusiastic as we rushed to our Base Civil Engineering ground equipment shop, hoping to find the tools to help us make the appropriate part. When we walked into the shop, we interrupted a card game of several Danish civilian contractor workmen/mechanics. When they realized what we were doing, they were all anxious to help and rushed to find three or four plumbing flaring tools in this shop and the plumbing shop nearby. These tools were for copper tubing, of course, but we forged ahead. Soon, there were at least half a dozen well-experienced mechanics in friendly competion to make, bend, flare, etc., the perfect replacement part for the Cessna. Special problems, of course, were: the 180 degree bend in such a short piece of stainless tubing, short sides of the U leaving little room to form the flare on each end and have the compression nut in the right place on each side also. The replacement had to be exactly like the original - couldn't be longer because of landing gear retraction restrictions (space in the wheel well). After several tries, we had an acceptable match visually. 'Rushed to the aircraft and installed it for a PERFECT fit. The aircraft flew its mission the next day and flew home to Los Angeles the next. 'Just a small part of my very enjoyable foreign relations experience and an excellent example of Danish mechanics' innovation and desire to excell. 'Much like our Jim Cathey. Wilton I had a nice snap on that would do normal and double flares. They only have double flare dies for us sizes, not metric, but I was able to make double flares with practice. Re: [MBZ] OT, a computer that will not run
Is it an AMD processor? Every AMD I've ever owned, after about 12-18 months of use (but I'm a bit hard on machines) has *required* me to pull the heatsink, clean the sink and the proc *completely* and reapply thermal transfer grease. They run hot enough to literally *boil off* *freaking grease*! Once the grease is gone, the heat sink is next to worthless because it is not adequately doing it's job. Then you start getting really odd, heat related errors. Like odd reboots, or complete system freezes. But you shut down, reboot, and it's cooled off enough to get half way through a boot, then bam, dead again. Pull the sink, check the grease. EdB On Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 4:05 PM, Kaleb C. Put in a new one, it seems to power on, and it will run fine for about 10-15 minutes, then it starts the crap again. Will just shutoff and reboot, sometimes it will finish loading windows, most of the time it just sits there and reboots over and over again. So, maybe memory, I swap that, no change, I start disabling onboard items such as LAN, ports etc thinking something is flaky, no go. So now I am thinking something with the board or processor is flaky, in which case, probably not worth messing with. Its a decent system in relative terms in that its a 1.whatever gig processor, decent size hard drive, 256 or so ram. Several years old but still worth running. Re: [MBZ] OT, a computer that will not run
*all* manufacturers, at one point, were proprietary. However, most now are ATX compliant because it is expensive to one off boards. I have two HP/Compaq boxes right now, one has an Asus motherboard in it. I know because I had the same board in a different case, but when it boots, has an HP BIOS image to put up the HP logo instead of the Asus logo. Anyway, if you look at any modern computer, you'll probably see an ATX board of a third party in there with a case design that is crafted to that board, in so much as, they weld a little plate in for it. But on both mine, if I knock the contact welds out and pop the plate, it's the standard ATX size backplane, and can then accept any motherboard I care to install. But, that's my exp. your mileage may vary EdB On Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 5:55 PM, Rich Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Compaqs generally have shared memory and are proprietary designs from what I have seen. Re: [MBZ] flare tool
That is a great story Wilton, and an appropriate one for Veterans' Day! At 06:30 PM 11/11/2008, you wrote: 'Reminds me of a night in Greenland in 1978. The last time i needed double flares, I used my cheap flare tool and just bought the 1/8 double flare die from snappy. it worked to make double flares for MB 110 brake lines. I have never seen a tool that makes 37degree JIC flares. The only place I have seen the JIC flare used is hydraulics, and you don't want to be doing that yourself. At least I don't want to be around if you do. For hydraulics, you buy the right fittings, especially when you get to 3000 PSI hydraulics. At 02:08 PM 11/11/2008, you wrote: Can anyone recommend a good all-purpose tubing flare tool that will do 45 and 37 (AN) flares, as well as double and metric bubble flares I know it will probably be costly but I'd rather have one good tool that can

I've never driven a 123 wagon, but from the 115 300D, 123 240D, 126 300SDL, and 107 450SLC, only the SLC comes close to driving as nicely as the 124 2300D 2.5T. The 124 gets twice as many miles per gallon as the SLC, has a usable rear seat, and twice the runk capacity. I've not driven a newer Benz, but in my experience (and preferences) the '90 to '93 124 300D 2.5T is the ultimate daily driver Benz - which is why I've collected two of them, and sold/traded the rest.
