We have an HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop - about 4 years old.  Has always been
reliable.
Yesterday something went wrong. It beeps (ie - beep, beep, beep - for a long
while ) on startup and the keyboard
appears to be dead. The screen comes up offering info on what to press to get
into setup etc but pressing the keys
does nothing. If one waits it will go to the screen that offers windows options
for startup like safe mode but
again the keys do nothing so one cannot get it to go any further.

Any ideas on what I might check first? IE- are there any fuses or that sort of
thing that might have popped? Any
ideas on web sites that I might go to with my problem?

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb's 300E Women

2009-01-05 Thread R A Bennell
Interesting, as I am sure I have read somewhere that women generally like red.
It is one of the reasons why sporty
cars are often red. The idea being that the young fellow is driving it partly
to attract members of the female
persuasion.

Now, I normally like red and have had a number of red vehicles in my time, but
I have to say that when I opened the
link for this car, I was quite disappointed to see it in that color of red. For
some reason, I was expecting black.

Re: [MBZ] Seasons Greetings is over, back to the current EHA current

2009-01-05 Thread Hendrik Fay
I finally got a chance to move the W123 out of the shed so I could get
the S124 in there for some tinkering.
Now I am having some trouble reading the current of the EHA, I made up a
in line loom to hook the multi meter into but can't seem to find any
current, it is supposed to have something like 1mA but I can't find
anything. Anyone got any clues.
I got the duty cycle worked out but it runs rich when in spec but will
have a bit more of a fiddle with it tomorrow, it's beer time. Also
disconnecting the EHA does not seem to make much difference to the duty
cycle reading. I'll just have to go through it step by step.

Check the connector under the front right carpet first -- a leak of
some sort, or even a spilled soda can cause corrosion or a ground at
the sensor, with a resulting dead sensor reading even though the
sensor is good.

You can test the computer by unplugging the harness to the O2 sensor
and grounding the sensor wire (NOT the heater wires.). The
computer should then run the mixture full rich. Unground the wire and
touch it with one hand and put a finger of the other on the positive
battery terminal (this will give a slight, high impedance voltage) and
the computer should run the mixture full lean.

To check the sensor, check the voltage while running, sensor wiring
disconnected. Should read something other than 0 and less than 1 V --
range is 0 (atmospheric oxygen in the exhaust) to 1 V (no oxygen in
the exhaust).

You should also get changes in reading in the current to the EHA --
and to get it all set up right, you really need to check that too.
Should be 0 mA with the mixture set to give 50% duty cycle at the
diagnostic socket, set at the mechanical adjustment.

How much could a Grand Wagoneer tow? They're longer than a Blazer yeah?

I saw an old Gladiator the other day and have become lustful of a full size
pickup of any flavor. Probably should have gotten one instead of the Ranger.
Don't get me wrong I like the Ranger but its fuel economy stinks. For 17mpg I
should have gotten a full size.

The Ranger folks say 17mpg is normal winter mileage and will improve in the
summer... We'll see how it does with the snowmobile trailer when we go to a

That's what I was thinking too.  And it's got to affect towing the
same way, unfortunately.  They're rated for something ridiculous like
12K lb, but can you imagine how unstable the K5 would be towing
something like a 30' Airstream?

What I really want is one vehicle that has high clearance, unstoppable
four-wheel-drive, great towing ability, and lots of enclosed room for
hauling stuff that needs protection from the weather.  Only choice as
far as I can see is a built 'Burb, or maybe a full-size truck with a
nice shell.  The problem is justifying paying what I'd have to for
something like that, when I could get a big 2WD truck and a small 4x4

anything. Tried to order a catalog and a field came up saying the catalog
 ordering page wasn't working...

To obtain a catalog (I have their newest one in front of me), just call them
tomorrow at 1-800-345-5789 and ask them to send you one. If you look on the
bottom of P48, you will see the Porsche Speedster that my friend SJB and I
spent
five years restoring.

Griot's is located in Fife, WA, just east of Tacoma and they do a lot of
demo
sessions for the local car clubs. I have been down there quite a few times
(with the MB and Porsche Clubs) and it's a class operation but not cheap.

As to materials, I have used a lot of Formula 303 (buy it by the gallon
refill) and would never use it as an upholstery cleaner because I don't
think it's
made for that. It's a great tire dressing (spray it on and wipe it off in
five
minutes) and on Concours day for my Porsche I treat everything on the
exterior that's black, be it rubber or plastic. I saturate small section of
folded
terry towel and wipe it on. And then off. Works wonders.

For MB Tex which is vinyl, after all, I would use any upholstery cleaner.
Apply some using a small brush for the dirtier areas, dry it with a towel,
then
wipe it down with a wet towel to pick up the residue followed by a dry
towel. I
have also been using a Simoniz product called Tuff Stuff which is a foam in
a
can available even at Safeway. This stuff is not expensive and works wonders
on those dirty door welts we kick when getting in.

As to waxes of old, I too used yellow can Simoniz long ago which was many
times harder to use than the modern stuff and lasted no longer.

Throughout the government loan request process, I’ve received many letters,

Re: [MBZ] Cars and status

2009-01-05 Thread E M
I'm impressed with all the work and the fleet.

It's funny, when I was chasing this one person, trying to buy their 560SEL,
it was a smoke colour with a hint of gold with dark brown leather. The
colour, and especially interior were what really made me lust after the car.
lol. I'm sure it would have been Wilton's bad dream come true. Same colour
brown leather as my 911. Are you sure you still want to borrow it for the
winter Wilton? lol ;-)

 *1987 300SDL 280k miles*
I have been working on repairing my new to me 1987 300SDL. So far here is
 what I have done:

 Timing chain
 Vacuum pump
 fixed minor fuel leaks

I am now finishing up the front suspension, basically I am replacing
everything upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, shocks, etc.

As I was doing the the upper control arm (ball joint) I noticed rust under
battery and welded a new piece of steel in hole but everything is going
 well. I really love POR-15!

After I get the suspension fixed I will fix transmission leaks and replace
motor mounts and then move to other items including:

 Install electric seat heaters
fix tachometer and odometer (does anyone know which gears are used on the
 300SDL? www.odometergears.com)
replace bad vacuum servos for heater, once I figure out which ones are bad.
order plastic pieces for seats and possible new seat covers.

Basically I figure the 300SDL will be my daily driver for next 5-10 years,
thus I want to get everything fixed like new such that I just need to keep
oil changed. Basically a driver restoration project.

Note this is around the 4th W126 I have rebuilt the front suspension on
 thus
if anyone has questions about how to do it let me know. Basically the
hardest part is pressing in the new ball joints and having spring
 compressor
to replace rubber bushings for lower control arm. I have also figured out
the easy way to replace bushings in the bearing bracket that only requires
 a
bench vise and a cheap C-clamp ball joint press.

Note I will have spent more in parts for this car than the price of the
 car...

 *1988 420SEL 247k miles*
I replaced the fuel distributor (rebuilt one $400) and it seems to be doing
good except I need to adjust the mixture a bit better. This car has had a
constant problem with a clunk coming from rear end when shifting gears. I
have replaced just about everything and have not found problem, has anyone
ever experienced this? Note it sounds like the differential is jumping
around, however I have replaced the mounts as well as drive shaft center
bearing mount. Need to order new headlight bezels from Rusty and get new
 coat of paint.

 *1991 560SEL 147k miles*
This one is suppose to be sold for $6k to friend of my wife, we will see.
The girl getting the car has been driving it for 4 months waiting for some
money deal to happen. Basically the only problems with this car are valve
guides loose in head, chip on the wood for the ash tray, and a hole in the
carpet near threshold on driver's side. I would fix valve guides but I do
not have the drill guide for heli-coiling head. Maybe I should add this to
 my wish list of tools.

Once I complete the 300SDL my next project will be doing some remodeling to
house to make wife happy then I plan on picking up my 1960 300d from my
parents barn and start that restoration project. Also my parents have a
couple of 560SEL that are in need of their 20 year service.

By the way did anyone see a 1987 gold 420SEL on ebay a few weeks back with
38k miles? My mom ended up buying the car, and it really was garage kept
 and
has only 38k. Of course it is an ugly color gold with brown interior.

Also does anyone know of a good way to repair cracks in vinyl dashes? Years
ago I saw a guy do it with something like bondo and wrinkle paint but I
 have
not found the wrinkle paint and figured someone here might know.

Both did - and the same engine continued to use a belt in later years, even
in the Ford Ranger.

It was a great engine as long as you serviced the belt when you were
supposed to. Unfortunately, most Americans drove the engine until the belt
broke then they blamed Ford for the design??

Re: [MBZ] polishing question for POOS

2009-01-05 Thread LWB250

You can do both with a random orbital buffer, however, I prefer to apply the
wax by hand.  That's mainly due to it giving you the ability to make sure you
get it in every nook and cranny when it's being applied.  If you use a buffer
to do it you'll miss a lot of areas due to its inability to get in corners and
other tight spots.

I'll take it off with a buffer, but you'll still need to do part of it by hand
as well, since you'll be going back to those places the buffer can't get to.  A
buffer is nice in that it allows you to cover a large area in a short time.
Using a buffer can easily cut the time it takes to wax a car in half compared
to doing it by hand.  The important part is making sure you have the right
pad(s) and covers, and plenty of them.  I don't try to clean covers when I'm
buffing - I have a supply of clean ones ready to go, and I just change them out
as they get loaded up.

I like RO buffers the best since it's nearly impossible to do any damage to the
finish with one unless you're hell-bent on it.

As for vinyl cleaner/protector, 303 is the way to go.  I wouldn't use it on
upholstery like MBTex, but it's great for use on dashes, tires and some
interior trim.  It's not cheap, but it goes a long way and does a far better
job than anything else I have ever used.  Probably the best part of 303 is it's
sunscreen - it has a UV blocking chemical in it that cuts down on UV damage -
that's why it's so popular in boating circles.

You can find 303 at boating and RV supply houses.  If there is a West's Marine
around, they will have it.

[MBZ] OT Laptop problem

2009-01-05 Thread R A Bennell

[MBZ] Cars and status

2009-01-05 Thread Trampas Stern

Note this is around the 4th W126 I have rebuilt the front suspension on thus
if anyone has questions about how to do it let me know. Basically the
hardest part is pressing in the new ball joints and having spring compressor
to replace rubber bushings for lower control arm. I have also figured out
the easy way to replace bushings in the bearing bracket that only requires a
bench vise and a cheap C-clamp ball joint press.

By the way did anyone see a 1987 gold 420SEL on ebay a few weeks back with
38k miles? My mom ended up buying the car, and it really was garage kept and
has only 38k. Of course it is an ugly color gold with brown interior.

Also does anyone know of a good way to repair cracks in vinyl dashes? Years
ago I saw a guy do it with something like bondo and wrinkle paint but I have
not found the wrinkle paint and figured someone here might know.

Re: [MBZ] Was someone looking for a diesel K5 Blazer?

2009-01-05 Thread Rich Thomas
I had an 87 K5, was a great truck, very agricultural. Easy to work on,
I would sit on the fender with my legs in the engine compartment, the
engine was right there...was pretty basic. 4x4 would crawl up the side
of a wall.

It was noisy and rattly, but solid. Drove it many miles cross-country,
seats were very comfortable (reclining buckets), but it did tend to pogo
a bit on the short wheelbase. I took the engine/tranny out of it last
summer and gave the hulk to a guy who builds hot rods and 4x4
off-roaders, he probably scrapped most of it. It was totally rusted out
after its first 12 years up north. I kinda liked the thing though.

Leatherique crack filler does _not_ work for this! I did a 450 SL,
painting the whole thing with their seat paint afterwards, and it
looked pretty good in the garage. But after installation on the
first warm day it squeezed out and made ridges. Thermally the crack
filler is all wrong. Maybe a urethane foam troweled into the cracks
might have worked better. (Or your Bondo.) Over that a light coat
of the crack filler and paint job could possibly have worked, I don't
know. I was so disgusted by the failure that I never tried again on
that car, and when it sold a plastic dash cap went with it.

real nice if you have to have a W140, though, as long as the
evaporator etc. (i.e. the long, oft-repeated list of stuff that breaks

All they ever owned were Saabs -- the squished-VW two-cycle kind.

We had one of those, had Monte-Carlo engine. Trip-Carbs, made more noise than
a 409 when the air cleaner was removed. I used to auto-cross it, great fun.
Wind it up to 6,000 rpm on my $19 tach, count to 3, shift it.

Old Fashion Window shade in front of radiator with rope inside, pull it up to
get it to warm up. Our other car was a VW bug, Saab had all the heat!

My second on was one of the survivors of the shipping incident which caused a
bunch of them to come loose in the hold of a ship in the North Atlantic. My
boss bought it off the dock in NY for $400, pounded out the dents and drove it
100Kmi, before retiring and selling it to me.
My wife could never get the hang of driving it, if you didn't use the whole
engine all of the time it would foul a plug. Loosing 33% of you cylinders was
not good, I always carried fresh {sandblasted} plugs with me. Being a

Everything rusted out the bottom, still ran great.

Yeah, maybe the engine computer is not working? It should run

Don't these cars have an 'open-loop' setting they run on if
they think the O2 sensor's not warm enough yet to function?
(Wouldn't that still depend on the EHA to set?)

[MBZ] Info about OIL here at home!

2009-01-05 Thread Chuck Landenberger

Hey Guys.

Gotta' wonder who is standing in the way of getting to these oil
resources here in the US..

Chuck
Phoenix AZ

Follow this link.

It will blow your mind. http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?
ID=1911

Here is what is reported:

The U.S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) what
only scientists and oilmen knew was coming, but man was it big. It
was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much
oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota ; western
South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's
Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American
dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration
(EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the
oil is recoverable... at $35 a barrel, we're looking at a resource
base worth more than $1.8 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically
see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.' says Terry
Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field
found in the past 56 years,' reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
It's a formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more
commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from
Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada . For years,
U.S.oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big
Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago.
However, a recent technological break through has opened up the
Bakken's massive reserves... and we now have access of up to 500
billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those
billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years
straight.

2. [And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one
should - because it's from TWO YEARS AGO, people!]

U.S.Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World!
Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006 Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the
surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil
reserve in the world is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8,
2005 President Bush

mandated its extraction.

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our
borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the
official estimates :

-8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
-18-times as much oil as Iraq
-21-times as much oil as Kuwait-22-times as much oil as Iran
-500-times as much oil as Yemen- and it's a ll right here in the

Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this!? Because the
democrats, environmentalists and left wing republicans have blocked
all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil.

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more
oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more
than 2 TRILLION barrels. Untapped. That's more than all the proven
oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think
again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to.

[Got your attention up yet? Hope so! Now, while you're thinking
about it ... and hopefully P.O'd, do this:

3. Pass this along.. If you don't take a little time to do this,
then you should stifle yourself the next time you want to complain
about gas prices .. because by doing NOTHING, you've forfeited your
right to complain.

 would be a choppy ride.

Their is some flexible filler made for plastic/rubber bumpers that works. I
took my old 300SD and filled a couple of spots on door and dash and then 3

  *1987 300SDL 280k miles*
I have been working on repairing my new to me 1987 300SDL. So far here is
  what I have done:

  Timing chain
  Vacuum pump
  fixed minor fuel leaks

I am now finishing up the front suspension, basically I am replacing
everything upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, shocks, etc.

As I was doing the the upper control arm (ball joint) I noticed rust
 under
battery and welded a new piece of steel in hole but everything is going
  well. I really love POR-15!

After I get the suspension fixed I will fix transmission leaks and
 replace
motor mounts and then move to other items including:

  Install electric seat heaters
fix tachometer and odometer (does anyone know which gears are used on the
  300SDL? www.odometergears.com)
replace bad vacuum servos for heater, once I figure out which ones are
 bad.
order plastic pieces for seats and possible new seat covers.

Basically I figure the 300SDL will be my daily driver for next 5-10
 years,
thus I want to get everything fixed like new such that I just need to
 keep
oil changed.

I have also figured out
the easy way to replace bushings in the bearing bracket that only
 requires
  a
bench vise and a cheap C-clamp ball joint press.

Note I will have spent more in parts for this car than the price of the
  car...

  *1988 420SEL 247k miles*
I replaced the fuel distributor (rebuilt one $400) and it seems to be
 doing
good except I need to adjust the mixture a bit better. This car has had a
constant problem with a clunk coming from rear end when shifting gears. I
have replaced just about everything and have not found problem, has
 anyone
ever experienced this? Note it sounds like the differential is jumping
around, however I have replaced the mounts as well as drive shaft center
bearing mount. Need to order new headlight bezels from Rusty and get new
  coat of paint.

  *1991 560SEL 147k miles*
This one is suppose to be sold for $6k to friend of my wife, we will see.
The girl getting the car has been driving it for 4 months waiting for
 some
money deal to happen. Basically the only problems with this car are valve
guides loose in head, chip on the wood for the ash tray, and a hole in
 the
carpet near threshold on driver's side. I would fix valve guides but I do
not have the drill guide for heli-coiling head. Maybe I should add this
 to
  my wish list of tools.

Once I complete the 300SDL my next project will be doing some remodeling
 to
house to make wife happy then I plan on picking up my 1960 300d from my
parents barn and start that restoration project. Also my parents have a
couple of 560SEL that are in need of their 20 year service.

By the way did anyone see a 1987 gold 420SEL on ebay a few weeks back
 with

[MBZ] Fw: Re: Fw: Info about OIL here at home!

2009-01-05 Thread Christopher McCann
Comment from my friend:

I think this is a bit overblown:

The USGS report from last year estimated that only 3-4
 billion barrels
could actually be recovered without a) new technology or b)
 absolutely
destroying large parts of Montana and the Dakotas. I
 suppose that is
what is meant by 'enviromentalist objections.'

The problem with the field, though I do not understand it
 entirely,
has to do with the shale deposits and where the oil
 actually is: in,
or beneath, the shale. Hence, it is impossible for us to
 remove most
 of it...

  Hey Guys.

Gotta' wonder who is standing in the way of
 getting to
these oil resources here in the US..

  Chuck
  Phoenix AZ

   Follow this link.

   It will blow your mind.
  http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911

   Here is what is reported:

The U.S. Geological Service issued a report
 in April
('08) what only scientists and oilmen knew was
 coming,
but man was it big. It was a revised report
 (hadn't been
updated since '95) on how much oil was in this
 area of
the western 2/3 of North Dakota ; western South
 Dakota; and
extreme eastern Montana ... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil
 discovery since
Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential
 to
eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil.
 The Energy
Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at
 503 billion
barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is
 recoverable... at
  $35 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base
 worth
  more than $1.8 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on
 this, you
could practically see their jaws hit the floor.
 They had no
idea.' says Terry Johnson, the Montana
 Legislature's
  financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the
 highest-producing
onshore oil field found in the past 56 years,'
 reports
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation
 known as
the Williston Basin , but is more commonly
 referred to as
the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from
 Northern
Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada .
 For years,
U.S.oil exploration has been considered a dead
 end. Even the
'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for
 major oil
wells decades ago. However, a recent technological
 break
through has opened up the Bakken's massive
 reserves...
and we now have access of up to 500 billion
 barrels. And
because this is light, sweet oil, those billions
 of barrels
will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the
 American
  economy for 41 years straight.

   2. [And if THAT didn't throw you on the
 floor,
then this next one should - because it's from
 TWO YEARS
  AGO, people!]

U.S.Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the
 World!
Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006 Hidden
 1,000 feet
beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies
 the largest
untapped oil reserve in the world is more than 2
 TRILLION
barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush
   mandated its extraction.

They reported this stunning news: We have
 more oil
inside our borders, than all the other proven
 reserves on
earth. Here are the official estimates :

-8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
-18-times as much oil as Iraq
-21-times as much oil as Kuwait-22-times as
 much oil
  as Iran
-500-times as much oil as Yemen- and it's
 a ll
  right here in the

   Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting
 this!?
Because the democrats, environmentalists and left
 wing
republicans have blocked all efforts to help
 America become
  independent of foreign oil.

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study
 says
we've got more oil in this very compact area
 than the
entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels.
 Untapped.
That's more than all the proven oil reserves
 of crude
oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its
 price -
even with this find? Think again! It's all
 about the
competitive marketplace, - it has to.

[Got your attention up yet? Hope so! Now,
 while
you're thinking about it ... and hopefully
 P.O'd, do
  this:

   3. Pass this along.. If you don't take
 a little
time to do this, then you should stifle yourself
 the next

that is their age, expect to tinker some.

That aside, if someone was looking for a blazer with a diesel, I know of a
6.5 powered 94 that its owner in washington state might be tempted to get
rid of, but don't expect anywhere near kaleb prices for it - add a zero to
the end and keep adding. It's in great shape.

Re: [MBZ] S320v?

2009-01-05 Thread John Freer
Naw, the seller has it right. In the W140 series, MB referred to the
longwheel base as a V and the normal wheelbase as a W as verifed at
the MBUSA site. It is not a part of the badging but is an internal way
to determine the wheelbase. There is an S320V as well as an S320W in
the US market.

MBUSA did this with the W140 when they dropped the badging SE and
SEL in 1995 or so.

What's the v on the end mean? Never heard of that before. Looks
real nice if you have to have a W140, though, as long as the
evaporator etc. (i.e. the long, oft-repeated list of stuff that breaks
on 140s) have been replaced. Wikipedia says more 140s were built with
M104 engines than all the rest put together, so that bodes well for
 used part availability, doesn't it?

Just about cold enough!

Minus 27 now around 5 PM according to the little weather eye thing on my

[MBZ] OT - recommend a bluetooth keyboard?

2009-01-05 Thread Max Dillon
Greetings all MB folk,

I bought my Wife a blackberry for Christmas, she loves the email feature but
hates typing on the tiny keypad. Can anyone recommend a bluetooth keyboard? I
envision that she'll mostly use this at home, so keyboard doesn't have to be
compact or foldable. The device does have a mini-USB connection - I wonder if
a regular USB keyboard can be connected? Would a USB keyboard drain the
battery too fast? 'Tis a Blackberry Curve 8330. Please CC your reply to my
email address, as I'm about 10 days behind on digest.

I know now why they are nicknamed 'Crackberries', there are so many toys you
can add! Lets see, bluetooth headset, bluetooth voice activated module for car
(it announces the name of the caller and responds to simple commands), GPS with
turn-by-turn directions, micro-SD card for recording movies (which I snagged
for $30 at Radioshack.com during a three-day sale), and probably several other
things I don't know about yet.

I think I'm going to need one myself soon...

Re: [MBZ] Name that diesel engine!

2009-01-05 Thread Loren Faeth
Mitsubishi had small diesel pickups in the US in the early 80s. I
never got to see one of the engines. Mazda/ford ranger was a
knockoff of the prewar OM636. Isuzu was a different OM636
knockoff. Toada gassers at the time were knockoffs of BMW
engines. I think their Diesels were more or less a knockoff of the
OM636 engine also.

One rumor I was told about the engine in my Frod Escort Diesel was
that it was made by Mitsubishi. Another was that it was made by
Mazda. Since all the Mazda /Ranger diesel engines I saw were OM636
knockoffs, I found the Mitsubishi rumor more plausible than the Mazda
rumor. The Escort Diesel was essentially a knockoff of the VW 4cyl
Diesel. The same valve adjusters from my Wabbit and the Quantum also
worked in the Frod. The Frod OE shims were marked in thousandths of
an inch, and of course the VW were in mm.

The main difference between the ford and VW was that the Frod had the
IP driven off the back of the cam, so there were 2 timing belts to
replace. Of course the Frod was 2 liter while the VW was 1.6L.

The engine in the Mits Montero looks like it could be the same as the
frod, but there is so much plastic smothering the engine, you can't
really see the engine.

Yeah, I'm hoping it is nothing too bad but am braced for the worst. We had the
extended warranty for it but I think
that was only good for 3 years and it must be 4 years old now. I have had
little luck trying to deal with HP on a
warranty issue. We had a printer that broke and they pretty much ignored our
requests for asistance. It was a very
common problem and there was lots of information on the web about how to claim
for it but all we seemed to get was
an ability to sit on the phone for hours waiting for someone to tell us we
needed to contact someone else. One can
only spend so much time chasing them on a printer that is not worth more than a
couple of hundred bucks. Still
angry about it though as it was obviously a defective part and not abuse on our
part. The thing only ever had one
set of ink cartridges through it in the space of a year and when we tried to
put new ones in, it wouldn't work. Had
to buy another one of their junk printers as there is little choice in the wide
format printers.

Hey Randy,
?Not to make this sound bad, but I have a Compaq Presario thats about the same
age and something similar happened
to me. Fortunately it was under warranty when I contacted HP and they said it
was my motherboard that went. They
ended up replacing the cpu along with it and so far its been running good. I
hope thats not your problem and if you
got recovery discs with it I would try them first. If not you can get them from

You need a CDL for over 26,000lb GVW.

So you need one for the Frod
You don't need one for the smaller truck, since it has
20,000GVW. You don't need dot inspection for hauling your own stuff
instate with non-CDL truck. You DO need DOT inspection and
registration number for CDL trucks.

If you are hauling for hire, interstate, you need the DOT stuff
regardless of GVW.

Yeah, maybe the engine computer is not working? It should run

Don't these cars have an 'open-loop' setting they run on if

Go to the HP site, look up the support page for that model, then
search for BIOS startup codes. That's the beeps
that you're hearing on startup - the number and frequency of them

It will blow your mind. http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp? ID=1911

IIRC, the flat rate for an engine rebuild was 8 hrs. for those
engines. I never got to perform one though. Never saw a Monte Carlo
engine either - heard they were lots of fun. The shop owner had the
wagon version - his wife hauled the kids all over town in it.

We had one of those, had Monte-Carlo engine. Trip-Carbs, made more noise
than a 409 when the air cleaner was removed. I used to auto-cross it, great
fun.

My
boss bought it off the dock in NY for $400, pounded out the dents and drove
it 100Kmi, before retiring and selling it to me.
My wife could never get the hang of driving it, if you didn't use the whole
engine all of the time it would foul a plug. Loosing 33% of you cylinders
was not good, I always carried fresh {sandblasted} plugs with me. Being a
flathead, they were very easy to swap.

Everything rusted out the bottom, still ran great.

I keep coming back to help America become independent of foreign
oil. Since when has the US been an oil producing company? The oil
is produced by multi-national corporations. It doesn't matter where
it's drilled, pumped, or refined. They'll sell the final product at
the best price they can get, where they can get it. If the supply and
demand markets were operating, we would not have had the price spike
last year. That was speculation - and it will continue to control the
price we pay at the pump. Where the oil is drilled will have very
little to do with the price and our dependence on foreign oil. Note
that even though we are dependent on foreign oil, we EXPORT Diesel
fuel! Of course, it's not us who are exporting it. It's the
multinational corporations who produced it. America does not produce
oil - corporations do.
It's a world market and economy - get over it.

We (our city) have a once-a-year hazardous waste disposal event in
town. As you drive out after dropping off all the old paint, etc.,
they offer you stuff that others have dropped off - hoping that
someone will use it, rather than making them deal with it. I took one
of those cans of instant traction on ice - it melts the ice, or your
tires, can't remember which. It has done a good job of keeping my wife
going, as it's never been used.

Your recycling station allows you to take away things that other
people have dropped off? That's been strictly verboten every place
I've ever taken my recycling. The county dump where we live now even
has signs posted on every surface reading NO SCAVENGING and
PROHIBIDA SCAVENGAR or whatever the Spanish equivalent is.
There's probably some liability issue but it still chaps my hide.

Re: [MBZ] Name that diesel engine!

2009-01-05 Thread Peter Frederick
That was the VW/Reualt/Volvo diesel? The Volvo and most other
variants used the rear of the cam drive for the IP, only VW to my
knowledge used a single belt on the front.

Real pain to change a water pump on -- you must remove the crankshaft
bolt, set with Loctite and torqued to 300 ft/lbs

Not a bad engine though -- the 2.4L in my Volvo cranks out 105 hp and
145 ft/lbs torque at 10 lbs boost -- the only real disadvantage is
the very noise turbocharger.

Very robust bottom end -- oil pump is on the crank, huge bearings,
lasts at least 300,000 miles with dino oil. Head isn't as good,
tends to crack badly between the valves, to the point the guides
float, but they, unlike the Benz heads, can be welded up. Stellite
coated valves, they last literally forever without wear. Inserted
pre-chambers, the injectors screw directly into the head.

thousandths of an inch, and of course the VW were in mm.

The main difference between the ford and VW was that the Frod had
the IP driven off the back of the cam, so there were 2 timing belts
to replace. Of course the Frod was 2 liter while the VW was 1.6L.

The engine in the Mits Montero looks like it could be the same as

Re: [MBZ] That Leather Restorer Goo.....

Your recycling station allows you to take away things that other
people have dropped off?

Only the household hazardous waste. Bleach, paint, etc. They'd
rather it walked away than have to deal with it, though you're
supposed to sign a waiver. Sometimes I even do!

I did manage to snag a 4x7' piece of copper pipe once, when
they weren't looking.

Re: [MBZ] Name that diesel engine!

2009-01-05 Thread Trampas Stern
I had a Mercury Topaz diesel same diesel engine as the Ford Escort, it was a
Mazda diesel engine. Was not a bad car except the starter was $750 new in
1996, found a rebuilt one for $300. Replaced starter 4 times under warranty,
when warranty went out I threw car away. I purchased the car for $200 site
unseen, rolled into shop I was working at on Friday mid day, primed injector
pump and slapped tags on it. Then on Monday drove it to key west from
Raleigh NC on spring break. Luckly it had a manual transmission thus when
starter died I could roll start it.

Another problem with car is gas station attendants would run out and yell at
me as I pumped diesel in the car.

Real pain to change a water pump on -- you must remove the crankshaft bolt,
set with Loctite and torqued to 300 ft/lbs

Not a bad engine though -- the 2.4L in my Volvo cranks out 105 hp and 145
ft/lbs torque at 10 lbs boost -- the only real disadvantage is the very
 noise turbocharger.

Very robust bottom end -- oil pump is on the crank, huge bearings, lasts at
least 300,000 miles with dino oil. Head isn't as good, tends to crack badly
between the valves, to the point the guides float, but they, unlike the Benz
heads, can be welded up. Stellite coated valves, they last literally
forever without wear. Inserted pre-chambers, the injectors screw directly
 into the head.

Mitsubishi had small diesel pickups in the US in the early 80s. I never

time were knockoffs of BMW engines. I think their Diesels were more or less
a knockoff of the OM636 engine also.

One rumor I was told about the engine in my Frod Escort Diesel was that it
was made by Mitsubishi. Another was that it was made by Mazda. Since all
the Mazda /Ranger diesel engines I saw were OM636 knockoffs, I found the
Mitsubishi rumor more plausible than the Mazda rumor. The Escort Diesel was
essentially a knockoff of the VW 4cyl Diesel. The same valve adjusters from
my Wabbit and the Quantum also worked in the Frod. The Frod OE shims were
marked in thousandths of an inch, and of course the VW were in mm.

The main difference between the ford and VW was that the Frod had the IP
driven off the back of the cam, so there were 2 timing belts to replace. Of
course the Frod was 2 liter while the VW was 1.6L.

The engine in the Mits Montero looks like it could be the same as the
frod, but there is so much plastic smothering the engine, you can't really
 see the engine.

What's going on here? Is that a factory Mitsubishi diesel, a Cummins,

[MBZ] W115 questions

2009-01-05 Thread Tim C.
Now that (with Rusty's help :) I've gotten the big stuff done for my W115 '74
240D, I'm on to the annoyance list. I'm not really sure what normal is for
several of these so I appreciate being able to consult you experts. As always
thanks in advance. :)

1) The Lights switch: how is the word Lights oriented? It makes sense to
me that the 0 is down and the word is at the top, but the only picture I can
find has it the other way. Also, the switch is 15 degrees or so to the right
of TDC in 'off'; is that normal?

2) Any caveats to removing the instruments, speedometer in particular? I do
have the service manual but any tips are appreciated, I'm concerned about the
oil and speedometer cables mainly as all my prior clusters have been of the
electronic sort.

3) On the back of the water pump is a 14mm(?) bolt that I can't find in the
aforementioned service manual. I mention the bolt because it appears to shoot
out water over 15psi. Can I safely tighten this and/or back it out slightly to
add some plumber's goop? Or is it some kind of overpressure? It almost looks
like it's missing a crush washer or something but I don't want the water pump
to fall apart until I really need to repair it. :)

4) Does anyone have a good description of how the ACC1 is supposed to work?
When I turn on the defrost the AC comes on, but I get no heat. Whenever I'm
going I always have a big draft coming in the center vents. If I have ACC on
even a little, the fan is off, and the blowing air from the sides carries heat;
if off the fan is as set by the defrost knob, always cold from the sides. The
center vent seems to be outside air as described in the owner's manual, but is
unresponsive to the center lever. From a prior thread I think this means my
freon tube temperature sensing widget is shot (not too hard to believe since it
was hanging loose when I opened the console, looks sealed but I don't know
quite where the far end goes nor how it should be attached). Probably I'm
missing some vent covers too? Prior owner was certainly inside the compartment
also, as the blower motor is quite new.

5) I have a random switch on the left hand side of the driver, just out from
the parking brake. It looks aftermarket (Radio Shack-style toggle). If I have
it on or flip it off while running, car is normal. However, if I have it off
when stopped, the car won't start but will buzz and flash the 'fasten seat
belt' light when I pull the start knob. Any ideas what this was for? It is
very tastefully done but I cannot divine its purpose.

Thanks for any insights on any or all of the above. :)

On another topic, I came upon:

Also check the above's archives for the link to an online virtual lab, if you
want to sit for a Cisco exam it would be invaluable if you don't have real
hardware.

Re: [MBZ] W115 questions

2009-01-05 Thread Peter Frederick
1): You need to loosen the switch retaining nut and insert it
correctly into the dash (pull the knob off). There are 5 positions
to the switch, by the way: Left parking light, right parking light,
off, parking lights (both sides), headlamps. Fogs work by pulling
the switch knob out, this will also switch the high beams off or fogs
go off with the high beams on.

2): You will need to remove the oil pressure line after you pull the
cluster -- it will just yank out, it's held in by a rubber gasket all
the way around. Speedometer cable is held on by a captive nub, and
there are also a large connector and a few wires to pull off. Be
careful not to bend the tube for the oil pressure line.

3):No clue on the water pump, but that is surely a sealed bolt, I
think you are right about the missing washer.

4): You likely have a bad switch knob on the ACC. There is a vacuum
operated flap that switches between AC and heat -- the heat will work
but only with inside recirculated air if the flap is in the wrong
position. You can hear it move when you turn the AC off or on -- if
not, check for a broken green vacuum line or for a leaking tank
behind the wheel inside the fender. Yellow lines run the door locks
if you have power locks. You may need to use a hand vacuum pump to
get it set where you want it, too. The center vents close with a
lever and flap -- make sure the lever is attached to the flap. It
will likely leak as the seal is long gone. The freon tube goes into
the fins of the evaporator -- without it, the evaporator will likely
freeze.

5); the extra switch defeats the seat belt interlock on the starting
system. Leave it be, it's are REAL hassle to get around it any
other way. Enhances the anti-theft of the starter system, too.

Re: [MBZ] W115 questions

2009-01-05 Thread Jim Cathey
2) Any caveats to removing the instruments, speedometer in particular?
I do have the service manual but any tips are appreciated, I'm
concerned about the oil and speedometer cables mainly as all my prior
clusters have been of the electronic sort.

The worst part is the ether-filled tube for the mechanical
temperature gauge. Don't mess that up. Pull the cluster
forwards and remove your gauge from the cluster.

4) Does anyone have a good description of how the ACC1 is supposed to
work? When I turn on the defrost the AC comes on, but I get no heat.
Whenever I'm going I always have a big draft coming in the center
vents.

Of course. Center vents are vent/AC only. If the lever doesn't shut
them off, then the lever is broken and/or disconnected. Use a
flashlight

and have a look through the grilles, it should be obvious.

From a prior thread I think this means my freon tube temperature
sensing widget is shot (not too hard to believe since it was hanging
loose when I opened the console, looks sealed but I don't know quite
where the far end goes nor how it should be attached).

It goes into a hole in the plenum, it should rest in the fins
of the evaporator. This is just a thermostat for the AC, so
unless you're cooling you'll never notice whether or not it's
broken. (You should be able to hear the thermostat 'click' if
you operate it with everything off, in a quiet environment.)
Only operates at around let's say 30-50 degrees. Bend that
tube as little as you can, it's fragilistically expensive.

Probably I'm missing some vent covers too? Prior owner was certainly
inside the compartment also, as the blower motor is quite new.

Which blower? There are two, if you have AC. There is a big
vacuum pod over the gas pedal that runs the vent flap changeover
and a switch to flip between the recirculating AC blower and the
ever-so-hard-to-replace fresh air (heating) blower. Make sure
it's working, that and the switch.

Re: [MBZ] Name that diesel engine!

2009-01-05 Thread Tyler
I've replaced a few D24 waterpumps without pulling the crank pulley.
Actually it's rather easy- there's only 3 bolts, and no gasket (just
an o-ring). You just need to keep the cam and crank from turning when
you replace it.

If your turbo is noisy their is something wrong with it. It's
basically the same Garrett T3 that nearly every 80s turbo car has, and
it should be nearly silent. If it's noisy it's probably out of balance
or has nicked fins.

I don't quite understand what you mean about cracking until the valve
guides float. All D24 heads I've seen have cracks between the valves,
but I have never heard of the crack causing any problems. When people
rebuild these heads they generally don't weld up the crack- there's no
point! It won't extend deep enough to affect anything.

My problem with the D24T is all of the weird cooling hoses that are
really difficult to find replacements for, and very expensive. Nobody
replaces them, so the engines are generally ruined from overheating
long before they're worn out...

Real pain to change a water pump on -- you must remove the
crankshaft bolt, set with Loctite and torqued to 300 ft/lbs

Not a bad engine though -- the 2.4L in my Volvo cranks out 105 hp
and 145 ft/lbs torque at 10 lbs boost -- the only real disadvantage
is the very noise turbocharger.
