Re: [MBZ] '85 190D engine etc for sale.
I'm wondering how many of these parts would transfer into a 124 wagon, like the pedals and the shifter boot stuff. I'm pretty sure the torque converter in my wagon is not working correctly, and I hesitate to RR the transmission just to replace the TC when this car has 327k on it and I don't know the age of the transmission. I think it must be a rebuilt, because it doesn't leak at all and for the most part shifts just fine, but is it only 100k miles old or will it die shortly after I start towing my boat? I'm think that a manual transmission will be better for towing, and I'd way prefer a 5-speed, as would my wife. This is because more and more R12 cars are off the road and/or have been converted to R-134a, which has lessened the demand for R12. It is certainly still available. Perhaps you could have an indy shop get you a supply. You have to be certified to handle it, as you probably know, but this can be done on-line for a nominal fee. R12 is still made in Mexico and there are large stockpiles of it here in the US, as well as reclaimed R12. I would think that any refrigeration or automotive supply business (or perhaps an indy mechanic shop) would sell it to you if you had proof of certification. If you had a friend in Mexico, you could get cans of itthey are available there in auto parts stores just like 134a is here in the States!! Cheers, Gerry On Jul 18, 2010, at 3:46 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Diesel Knocking
Doesn't a bad spray pattern from an injection nozzle cause this problem? If so, either (or both) the Diesel purge and/or the Italian tune-up would be the first choice, then having the injectors rebuilt. On Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 1:54 PM, Dwight E. Re: [MBZ] Diesel Knocking
First, Isolate the problem cylinder by cracking one injector line at the nozzle holder, one at a time. If you wrap a rag around the line, that will reduce the chance of getting a Diesel fuel shower when you open the line. THe cylinder you work on will miss, but if the knock goes away, that is the offending cylinder. Once you have identified the offending cylinder, the next step is to pull the nozzle and holder, and the seal, and in dusk conditions, look inside the hole of the prechamber to see it the ball is there. It is about 5/16 dia held in place by an rod that is about 1/8 inch dia and splits around the ball to hold it. IF the ball is missing, then you need to replace the prechamber. It takes a special tool to remove the ring and a special puller. Then take the nozzle and holder to a shop that has a nozzle tester to get it checked. It probably is a dribbler. Is so, all 4 nozzles need to be replaced, and the set recalibrated and tested. Look under Diesel fuel Injection in the yellow pages for a good shop. The dribbler will take out the prechamber ball. If you need a new set, Rusty can sell you a new set, recalibrated, and you can put them in yourself. BE SURE TO PUT IN A NEW SEAL UNDER ANY INJECTOR YOU REMOVE!! IT IS A METAL SEAL. The injection shop should have them or you can buy them from Rusty. 800 741 5252 Carbon can cause knocking also, but the carbon is usually the after affect of another problem. A long hard highway drive can clear out carbon. Good luck! List- I have a 83 240D (266K). Lately the engine has been giving off a crackling, knocking sound at low and medium throttle. The rabbit diesel truck was one of the worst vehicles ever--HORRIBLY noisy, and too small in cab or bed to be useful. Cab was tiny. Had a diesel Jetta that was much better--a nice little car. Had a turbodiesel vanagon westy that I loved. 27 mpg at 65, and adequate power, surprisingly enough, mostly due to the flat turbo torque curve and a well-matched wide ratio 4-speed. You're right about payload--they were rated for a ton but would carry considerably more with grace. I once drove 800 miles with probably 3,000 lbs in mine, and it rode, handled, and drove just fine, albeit several inches lower. LOADS of suspension travel, very good off road. Because of the chassis configuration, it was easy to load them level, and maintain a 50/50 weight distribution. I now have a toyota previa. MUCH more reliable, twice as powerful, and a very decent vehicle in its own right, but much smaller and won't handle anywhere near the weight or bulk that the vanagon would, and rides worse, empty or full. The vanagon doka (for DOuble KAb) truck is much sought after, but I never wanted one, because the bed is so small and high. Half the advantage of the vanagon van was the low entry hight of the side door and the very high roof. Tremendous capacity. Alex Chamberlain apchamberl...@gmail.com writes: Mini in size, perhaps, but not in payload. Vanagons have ridiculously heavy-duty suspensions and resulting high weight capacities. You could probably put a brace of OM617s in the bed of that thing without making it appreciably slower. If it got appreciably slower, it wouldn't be moving. Vanagons are not speed demons to start with. About 75 MPH or so and you're getting close to red-line with the Waterboxer engine. The diesels are slower than that. If you try to drive a diesel vanagon and keep up with today's traffic you'll blow up the engine in a few 10Ks of miles. VW diesels are not Mercedes. Re: [MBZ] I buy a new AC machine, now have AC problems
You only need to have the engine running if charging from cans, as it's impossible to drive the freon in with a can and a hose, you have to use the compressor to get it into the system. From a large can or with a pump on a recovery system, you can push liquid in by weight, no need to have the compressor running. Kaleb: Verify that you are charging in lbs and not kg.. If you are stalling out the compressor, it sounds to me as if you have a totally liquid filled high side, which would not surprise me if you are charging 2.2 times as much as you think you are! It might be better to charge from cans in this case, or at least with the engine running and the gauge set installed so you can watch the pressures. At 1500 rpm, all fans going full blast, and the windows open, you should get 40 or so lbs pressure low side (35F on the scale, whatever the pressure required to get it) and 350-375 high side, maybe a bit more if its like 95 outside.
