Re: [MBZ] Stranded in Oklahoma City, OK

2011-04-29 Thread Dieselhead
No orings on the bolt. There is a copper or alum seal ring under the
head of the bolt.

Your basic description is accurate. The cartridge goes in the can
and the nylon doodad with the mesh in it goes on top. A bit of a
devil to get it all back into the car as there is not a whole lot of
room. I have found it helps a lot if I put the car up on ramps
before hand so that I can get far enough under to see if I appear to
be lined up. It is possible to get the bolt in the wrong spot and to
bend the edge of the canister if one tries to tighten it up without
it being aligned properly. Cannot recall if there are any o-rings on
the bolt. I don't think I have ever changed any.

I would expect more like low pressure until the whole can is

Wouldn't the oil filter o-ring being bad or missing cause low

Don't have any Seagate or Maxtor HDs.

.considering where Toyota and MBZ rank in customer satisfaction and
reliability these days, a little "toyotazidation" would serve MBZ well!
Frankly, i don't have any idea why anyone is paying a premium for a new MBZ
these days, except perhaps that they're blinded by the reputation of the
3-pointed star that our good old cars are responsible for creating.

Well, looking at the header, it's MBUSA & not MBCA that is providing the
help where eligible. And anyone who didn't buy their car from an MB dealer or
buys parts from them occasionally is not an MB customer anyway so why should
they provide any free service to them?

As to the rest of this post (from somewhere in space, apparently) current
MB's are so much more reliable than ANY past model (prove me wrong with
facts, not self serving guesses) that it's really a waste of time to debate the
point.

As to the contention that the "good old cars" established a reputation, I
agree but it sure as hell wasn't because of their reliability. My past MBs in
varying degree had ten times the problems my current car has. Including the
300D, BTW.

There is a copper washer between the head of the center bolt and the
cannister and a rubber o-ring between the cannister and the oil filter
mount. The nylon bypass filter goes on top of the deep filtering
cartridge with its openings up to mate with holes in the mount. There are
no small o-rings along the length of the center bolt like on the W123.

I think you're unlikely to see a big ratio change through that. Maybe 50:1
becomes 48:1, not a big deal. More likely (especially in a plastic container)
is that water has gotten in. Maybe water condensed into the gas tank on the
mower contaminating what you put in...

Hm, that could be it, I had to use some gas left from last fall; it was
in a sealed container but potentially some of the gas evaporated and
concentrated the oil in the remaning mixture. It wasn't surging when I
last used it in the fall.

Drain out he gas that has water in it and replace with fresh. 1oz of Seafoam

I have one that's about 9-10 years old. It surges, i.e. revs up, slows
down, over and over. Wondering how to adjust whatever is trying to
regulate the engine speed.

Funny, I purposely bought a two-stroke because I didn't want the hassle

Sadly I don't think Lawnboy make the two-strokes anymore, yet another

Your basic description is accurate. The cartridge goes in the can and
the nylon doodad with the mesh in it goes on top. A bit of a devil to
get it all back into the car as there is not a whole lot of room. I have
found it helps a lot if I put the car up on ramps before hand so that I
can get far enough under to see if I appear to be lined up. It is
possible to get the bolt in the wrong spot and to bend the edge of the
canister if one tries to tighten it up without it being aligned
properly. Cannot recall if there are any o-rings on the bolt. I don't
think I have ever changed any.

think it is the same as the 621, where the oil filter cartridge is
only the bypass filter. There is supposed to be a spring in the
bottom of the can. Then the cartridge, then the main filter. The
main filter is a reuseable plastic thing link 4 saucers stacked like
this: ()() When you put the can on the engine, you have to push the
main and cansiter filters down, hold them down with ine finger until
you get the can pressed up against the housing, then screw in the bolt
that holds the can. There are no stem orings like on the 123 OM616/7
and OM60x engines. I have seen 621s with NOTHING in the filter can
that hold good oil pressure. I don't think the problem is there, but
theyre MAY be a valve in the can that controls main vs bypass. If all
the oil is diverted to the bypass, the oil pressure might drop as in
this case.

I would expect more like low pressure until the whole can is
pressurized, then normal pressure, if all the flow went to the bypass
filter. If anyone has a 615 book or a 617 book, this should be able
to be confirmed or refuted.

Maybe, I was trying to remember if those have the o ring deal like
the later cars

Oil pressure was down to below .5 bar hot, and would only peg the

The hope was that the pressure limit valve was the culprit, but

Wouldn't the oil filter o-ring being bad or missing cause low oil

I like the free version of Macrium Reflect for simple backups of one
partition: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

For more complicated jobs, I found it worthwhile to pony up $60 for
the Standard version of Miray HDClone:
http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html

The latter will easily clone and restore a hard drive with multiple
partitions running different OSs, allowing defragmentation and
resizing on the fly. I have used it when upgrading hard drives in
various laptops. It can, for example, clone an internal drive,
partitioned for Windows, Linux, and the "secret" emergency boot
partition that most laptops have, to an external drive, growing and
defragmenting the Windows partition along the way. Then swap the new
external drive for the internal and the machine boots without a hitch,
the only difference being more space.

Free *and* Idiot-Proof/Plug-N-Play may be hard to find. Much of the good free
software for Windows is written by techies for techies.

If you want to get your hands a *little* dirty you can boot a linux live CD and
use the 'dd' utility. dd does a byte-by-byte copy of one disk to another. So
you could copy your internal hard drive to an attached drive, for example.

Careful though, if you get the command parameters backwards you'll wipe your
internal drive instead.

Here's an web page that talks about how to do it.

Points well taken, Roger.

I was curious as I see it listed in a lot of job requirements, and after
looking it over closely, it just appears to be a "best practices" sort of
thing, nothing more. The study questions I read I could answer for the most
part without ever having read the material.

I agree with your comments regarding certifications, but if it's something I
can do easily and inexpensively, why not?

My current Security+ instructor has access to a test prep service that has
materials for just about everything imaginable. I am going to see if he has
anything on ITIL

I have used Acronis (Free version) several times and seems fine.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: Backup software needed

Can someone suggest a free disk cloning/imaging software program that's
idiot-proof/plug-n-play,
that only has to be loaded in a computer and an external drive and it does
its thing without
getting into a lot of technicalities?

This would be for a laptop/ running Windows XP Home that doesn't have a copy
of Windows Backup. (Couldn't find a download for Windows XP Backup).

Someone on another list suggested Clonezilla. What do you think?

Thanks,
Gerry Archer

Our Extention Agent has had problems with some email servers
rejecting his emails, turned out to be his signature block. Who
knows why, but it's worth a look.

Kaleb, is this list run off a Comcast service by chance? Do you have
any particularly aggressive spam filters set on it?
