What Grant said. Also, don't oversize because that significantly increases fuel burn at idle. In other words, don't size the system to run the whole house normally. Standby units are almost always in standby, which IMO rules out diesel or gasoline for fuel. If propane, you'll need a big tank because (1) you'll burn a lot and (2) small tanks may not maintain pressure at high flow rates. Standby units are not maintenance free; you'll need to change oil and filters and check/service the battery at least annually; gasoline and diesel units requite more MX. Generac and rebranded Generac (Centurian and Guardian) and a few others come with an auto transfer switch (big $$ as a stand-alone purchase) which is a major plus for those packages. Remember that the unit needs to be weather-proof as it will be outdoors all the time and must be located at least 3 ft away from the house, more if there are windows nearby. Give thought to which loads will be on the generator and how they'll be connected. For a big generator, it may be easier to add a subpanel for those loads and run the subpanel off the transfer switch; this has the added benefit of allowing you to add/change some loads in case you forget something important. At my last house (in FL), my neighbor (who owned electrician business) had a huge water-cooled 40KW natural gas unit. And he let us hook up after hurricanes (usually 2-4 days) while power was off. This happened a lot in those days. We learned that a little power went a long way: just 1-2 lamps, the refrigerator, computer, TV, and a couple fans made a huge difference. In fact pulling power through over 200ft of 12 ga extension cords, we found we couldn't run the computer and refrigerator at the same time but that small amount of power was still wonderful. I haven't had a chance to elaborate on this topic as I would liked to last night - it's on my agenda for this evening - but I do want to comment on something said in the quoted post: Fuel consumption at idle (which is a misleading term, since standby generators don't idle, they run at a constant speed of 1800 or 3600 RPM) is static. The only thing that affects fuel consumption at no load is altitude and temperature. Since altitude isn't going to change, that leaves temperature. Long story short, fuel consumption at no load is static. It doesn't change. Dan Sent from my iPhone On Aug 31, 2011, at 1:34 PM, Scott and Gwen Ritchey ritche...@nc.rr.com wrote: What Grant said. Point well taken. However, no load fuel consumption is minimal at best, compared to 25-50% or more. Lightly loaded generators are a very common occurrence, but this is mainly due to having adequate capacity for transient loads like motors. Yup, what others are saying. SearchTempest (ST) used to be stellar but CL made them change something awhile back (forgot what it was) and it became less useful. Still, taking time to learn their search formatting helps A LOT. If going national or international, adding a ST RSS feed to Google Reader makes it infinitely easier. After you set parameters and see the results, click the Feeds For This Search link for instructions on loading it into Google. The interface is cleaner with fewer pages to click through. Like Rolf, I now use RSS - actually an autoloading Firefox RSS browser plug-in. Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators
Excellent point Dan. Generators must turn at a set RPM in order to have the correct number of passes per minute between stator and field. It makes electricity whether or not you use it. It is ready, so a generator doesn't idle like your car at a stoplight. The fuel speed control only reacts to load to keep it at the speed which makes the desired 120 or 240 volts. On Wed, Aug 31, 2011 at 10:57 AM, Dan Penoff lwb...@yahoo.com wrote: I haven't had a chance to elaborate on this topic as I would liked to last night - it's on my agenda for this evening - but I do want to comment on something said in the quoted post: Fuel consumption at idle (which is a misleading term, since standby generators don't idle, they run at a constant speed of 1800 or 3600 RPM) is static. I just did an A/B of my Time Windows (no model number on the back, so I guess they are version 1.0, as it were) and Time Frame 400s. I think my earlier off-the-cuff assessment was pretty accurate. The Time Frames seem to have a sort of built-in smile-shaped frequency response. Treble is sharper, almost shrill. There's much more bass but it's not at all boomy or thumpy. The Time Windows have a smooth, warm, even sound all across the spectrum. The best way I can describe it is that it's kind of like listening to vinyl on a good turntable for the first time after getting used to CDs. There's definitely much less bass than with the Time Frames, though. I can see why Jim uses a subwoofer with his Time Windows. The differences are really more subtle than I have made them out to be. I'm sure non-audiophiles would not be able to tell the difference, or if they could, wouldn't care. I would be perfectly happy with either, I'd just turn down the treble a notch on my preamp if I were to use the Time Frames. Diesel has fewer flash fire issues, lasts much longer with simple biocide treatment to keep alge growth in control. It is hydroscopic so should be sealed against water intrusion. Cost: Gas generators large enough to run a house systems can be in the less than a 1000 bucks range. Diesel gensets cost more [$1500 to $10K about]. lasts longer in useful hour life span, aren't available in smaller sizes [3500 Watt is about the low end size]. Propane fueled generators use more fuel than either gas or diesel simply because propane [or natural gas] has less BTU per comparable volume of fuel. Propane stores pretty well, as in independent source from the vulnerable NG grid , as a third option. However, you may have local permit issues with a large propane tank in your yard. My personal experience: I live on a remote 36,000 acre ranch [that's 35 sq. miles] in western Arizona. The nearest power pole is 42 miles away, so for me, normal is your emergency. I have all the electrical items [likely] that you have and the order of electrical generation works for me like this. 1. Solar system , 4.5 KW system.. Primary. normal house things, computer, lights, refrig. 2. Diesel Generator, 7.5 KW system... Secondary 120/240, 3 phase available 3. Diesel Generator. 3.5 KW system... Secondary backup. 120/240... 4. Gas Generator, 3.5 KW system Reserve secondary backup, mobile rig 120/240 with welders on trailer, also wired to run well pumps. 5. Gas Generator, 1.2 KW system House system backup reserve, [dedicated to refrig/deep freeze and lights. [phased usage required since it's to small to handle start loads on all the items at one time. 6. Numerous 12 volt solar panels dedicated to small battery banks to run things like the electric entry gate, security cameras, electrified fences, communication relays, etc. As you may guess, I'm a great fan of not depending on public services [since there are none where I am] respectfully suggest that in a real emergency you quickly find yourself in the same situation. Until you do that, you're just flailing around. Make a list of must have loads and write down their wattages. The worst case ones will be small, fractional horsepower motors, like sump pumps and furnace blowers. Single phase motors are horribly inefficient when it comes to starting current, so you've got to have enough reserve to handle their inrush current. From there look at things like fridge, freezer, basic lighting, garage door opener, etc. Generac and other manufacturers have some good sizing programs on the Web that allow you to do the calculations. Just keep in mind that these are general values and not 100% accurate. It's a guide to give you an idea of what you need capacity-wise. Once you know what you need kW-wise you can start looking. Stationary sets run off propane vapor or natural gas. Be careful when shopping, as propane has a much higher BTU content than natural gas, so machines are often rated on propane with deration percentages if it's on natural gas. Usually you'll see a 10%-15% deration on natural gas. Install

The other seal makes a mess when you pump, and cannot be replaced without basically destroying the pump, but so long as the pump doesn't leak air when not in use you can put up with a bit of that. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I can see why Jim uses a subwoofer with his Time Windows. Don't have TW's, have TF500 (and TF400). The sub was procured while I was using EPI A70 bookshelf speakers, which the 500's replaced. No reason to decommission the sub at that point, but there was somewhat less reason to use it than with the EPI's. Why would plugging and unplugging it be a pain? I've used my MacBook Pro for almost 4 years for software development and movies, music, etc. They are thinner than many Windows laptop making it easy to carry. The power supplies are small with long cords or you can change the cord to a 2-blade connector and the power connection on the laptop side is magnetic so if you trip over the cord your laptop doesn't go flying. Re: [MBZ] OT Good, better, Bosch dishwashers
Yeah the Bosch units have a reputation for being quiet. The S/H one I am looking at is made in the Fatherland. The problem I see is that a Whirlpool machine is not worth repairing, specially seeing that a main wash pump costs between AU$250-300 and that may not be the problem with it, getting an expert out to look at it will cost $$$'s, so I figure spending AU$150 on an older Bosch makes more sense, at least a Bosch will be worth repairing. There is a fair price range of different new Bosch models, from AU$600-AU$2000, so I am not sure if the internal bits on a 600 machine is the same as a 2K machine. As a side note, I think Siemens sells re-branded Bosch dishwashers and Miele don't have that good a reputation anymore http://www.productreview.com.au/c/dishwashers/m/miele.html http://www.productreview.com.au/c/dishwashers/m/bosch.html Hendrik Rich Thomas wrote: I have bought and installed 2 Bosch dishwashers to replace POS whatevers. Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer reliability
The physical layout in the computer area makes changing laptops a pain. I've used PCs since before windows (for about 16 years) such that they've become second nature. I can see that after I've learned the Apple system as well as I know PC/Windows, I'll like it better since it has many advantages such as being faster and more intuitive than Windows. Apple, of course, does not have the installed base that Windows has; and that creates problems when trying to solve various glitches that arise. For example, I installed Snow Leopard and mail had problems. Isp couldn't help. Wiped the hd and installed Leopard 10.5xx that came with the Mac which helped but still couldn't receive mail. After talking to four techs at the isp, the last one finally transferred me to someone who knew Apple and he solved the problem in about five minutes. In general, I get along well on both the PC and the Mac and I'm even beginning to figure out Linux. Sort of a hobby after one retires, but a slow hobby since one doesn't learn as fast as when one is younger. I do carry the Macbook when I go out and like its thinness, smaller size, and less weight. My Macbook has built in wifi which works better than the PC at hotspots such as restaurants and airline terminals. This Macbook probably doesn't have Thunderbolt since it's 2 years old, but it sounds like it would be considerable advantage for one using it as a desktop. But this begs the question, why would a manufacturer risk losing their reputation for quality by cheaping out? Guess we have all heard about companies starting/buying another company to act as a agent for low end products, so as not to damage the main companies image. A good reputation takes years/decades to build and not very long to destroy. Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators
Liquid withdrawal fuels systems are more efficient and less prone to variances in ambient temperatures, but the hardware involved makes them pricey. It's unusual to see liquid withdrawal unless the location has low ambient temperatures that would prevent vaporization in the main tank. Also, there is some potential for liquid withdrawal systems to have difficulty supplying full load fuel volumes on initial start if ambient temperatures are low. Without a fully functioning block heater, there may not be enough heat available from the cooling system water jacket to vaporize fuel quickly enough to generate the volume required for full load. Also, code does not allow liquid (high pressure) fuel supplies inside of a building, so the unit has to be outside. A liquid withdrawal system can easily add $1000 to the cost of a generator set. Buy in bulk during the early to mid summer months, as that is when the price is usually lowest. Fall has a lot of farmers running grain dryers, so that can drive up the price later in the year. I can understand the support issues. When I moved from Window to Mac a few years ago I still needed to run Windows applications so I converted my work issued laptop to a virtual machine that I could use with VMWare Fusion. In my case I converted a Windows partition (bootcamp) to a virtual machine, but VMWare now has software you can install on the Windows machine and it will create a virtual machine on your Mac. It even will sync the two, so if you're writing a document in Word on the Windows machine while VMWare is creating the image, you'll have the most recent save on your virtual machine!
