On an OM61x engine, the thermostat is actually a pair of valves.
When it operates, the bypass vvalve closes and the radiator

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread Scott and Gwen Ritchey
What Grant said.

Also, don't oversize because that significantly increases fuel burn at idle.
In other words, don't size the system to run the whole house normally.
Standby units are almost always in standby, which IMO rules out diesel or
gasoline for fuel. If propane, you'll need a big tank because (1) you'll
burn a lot and (2) small tanks may not maintain pressure at high flow rates.
Standby units are not maintenance free; you'll need to change oil and
filters and check/service the battery at least annually; gasoline and diesel
units requite more MX. Generac and rebranded Generac (Centurian and
Guardian) and a few others come with an auto transfer switch (big $$ as a
stand-alone purchase) which is a major plus for those packages. Remember
that the unit needs to be weather-proof as it will be outdoors all the time
and must be located at least 3 ft away from the house, more if there are
windows nearby. Give thought to which loads will be on the generator and
how they'll be connected. For a big generator, it may be easier to add a
subpanel for those loads and run the subpanel off the transfer switch; this
has the added benefit of allowing you to add/change some loads in case you
forget something important.

At my last house (in FL), my neighbor (who owned electrician business) had a
huge water-cooled 40KW natural gas unit. And he let us hook up after
hurricanes (usually 2-4 days) while power was off. This happened a lot in
those days. We learned that a little power went a long way: just 1-2 lamps,
the refrigerator, computer, TV, and a couple fans made a huge difference.
In fact pulling power through over 200ft of 12 ga extension cords, we found
we couldn't run the computer and refrigerator at the same time but that
small amount of power was still wonderful.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

Some items to consider in generator selection for use in a real disaster.

1. If it's an earthquake disaster, Gas lines will be broken, or as a
precaution all main supply valves will be shut off until safety can be
ensured via inspection for the whole area. During that time, your NG
generator will be without fuel, you will be without electricity.

2. If it's a hurricane, with damage on even small scale, homes will be blown
away ripping out the gas line connection which will once again require
shutting down the main supply to the gas grid system for the entire area.
Result, you are out of gas and electricity with no fuel source for the
backup generator

3. Nuke attack Let's don't go there. However, presuming you survive,
will the gas mains?

Size selection is a matter of calculation of electrical load for necessary
function. Easy enough to do with a bit of thought and work.

Fuel choice: Gasoline doesn't store well, goes stale with time, and
presents a real fire hazard for storage. Diesel has fewer flash fire
issues, lasts much longer with simple biocide treatment to keep alge growth
in control. It is hydroscopic so should be sealed against water intrusion.

Cost: Gas generators large enough to run a house systems can be in the less
than a 1000 bucks range. Diesel gensets cost more [$1500 to $10K about].
lasts longer in useful hour life span, aren't available in smaller sizes
[3500 Watt is about the low end size].
Propane fueled generators use more fuel than either gas or diesel simply
because propane [or natural gas] has less BTU per comparable volume of fuel.
Propane stores pretty well, as in independent source from the vulnerable NG
grid , as a third option. However, you may have local permit issues with a
large propane tank in your yard.

My personal experience: I live on a remote 36,000 acre ranch [that's 35 sq.
miles] in western Arizona. The nearest power pole is 42 miles away, so for
me, normal is your emergency. I have all the electrical items [likely]
that you have and the order of electrical generation works for me like this.
1. Solar system , 4.5 KW system.. Primary. normal house things, computer,
lights, refrig.
2. Diesel Generator, 7.5 KW system... Secondary 120/240, 3 phase
available
3. Diesel Generator. 3.5 KW system... Secondary backup. 120/240...
4. Gas Generator, 3.5 KW system Reserve secondary backup, mobile rig
120/240 with welders on trailer, also wired to run well pumps.
5. Gas Generator, 1.2 KW system House system backup reserve, [dedicated
to refrig/deep freeze and lights. [phased usage required since it's to small
to handle start loads on all the items at one time.
6. Numerous 12 volt solar panels dedicated to small battery banks to run
things like the electric entry gate, security cameras, electrified fences,
communication relays, etc.

As you may guess, I'm a great fan of not depending on public services [since
there are none where I am]

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread Dan Penoff
I haven't had a chance to elaborate on this topic as I would liked to last
night - it's on my agenda for this evening - but I do want to comment on
something said in the quoted post:

Fuel consumption at idle (which is a misleading term, since standby
generators don't idle, they run at a constant speed of 1800 or 3600 RPM) is
static. The only thing that affects fuel consumption at no load is altitude and
temperature. Since altitude isn't going to change, that leaves temperature.

Long story short, fuel consumption at no load is static. It doesn't change.

Ditto on RSS feeds, I have a bunch that I set up in Google Reader.
Works fine from the web or, if you swing that way, the Android Google

You can change cities just by changing the prefix in the feed, so if
you are searching for the same things in the area then it is pretty
quick to paste one and edit the base URL.

Of course a month ago I'd have said Jaxed, but...

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks, Rolf!

I have long nursed a grudge against CL for deliberately crippling
their search feature so that not only can't you do any kind of Boolean
search, but also non-alphanumeric characters are stripped out (for
example, try searching for 5.0 mustang---your results will include
any ad with 50 in it).

Searchtempest looks like it gives back most of what I want, although
regexps would be nice...

Point well taken.

However, no load fuel consumption is minimal at best, compared to 25-50% or
more.

Lightly loaded generators are a very common occurrence, but this is mainly due
to having adequate capacity for transient loads like motors.

Not a lot you can do about it

Yup, what others are saying.

SearchTempest (ST) used to be stellar but CL made them change something awhile
back (forgot what it was) and it became less useful. Still, taking time to
learn their search formatting helps A LOT. If going national or international,
adding a ST RSS feed to Google Reader makes it infinitely easier. After you set
parameters and see the results, click the Feeds For This Search link for
instructions on loading it into Google. The interface is cleaner with fewer
pages to click through.

Like Rolf, I now use RSS - actually an autoloading Firefox RSS browser plug-in.

That's the idea, as I understand it, behind the whole-house
off-the-grid systems where you run full-time off a big bank of
batteries, which is charged when necessary by a generator running
relatively briefly at full load (as well as by solar panels, wind
turbines, or whatever).

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread G Mann
Excellent point Dan.
Generators must turn at a set RPM in order to have the correct number of
passes per minute between stator and field. It makes electricity whether
or not you use it. It is ready, so a generator doesn't idle like your
car at a stoplight. The fuel speed control only reacts to load to keep it at
the speed which makes the desired 120 or 240 volts.

I haven't had a chance to elaborate on this topic as I would liked to last

Fuel consumption at idle (which is a misleading term, since standby
generators don't idle, they run at a constant speed of 1800 or 3600 RPM) is
static. The only thing that affects fuel consumption at no load is altitude
and temperature. Since altitude isn't going to change, that leaves
 temperature.

Long story short, fuel consumption at no load is static. It doesn't change.

Standby units are almost always in standby, which IMO rules out diesel or
gasoline for fuel. If propane, you'll need a big tank because (1) you'll
burn a lot and (2) small tanks may not maintain pressure at high flow
 rates.
Standby units are not maintenance free; you'll need to change oil and
filters and check/service the battery at least annually; gasoline and
 diesel
units requite more MX. Generac and rebranded Generac (Centurian and
Guardian) and a few others come with an auto transfer switch (big $$ as a
stand-alone purchase) which is a major plus for those packages. Remember
that the unit needs to be weather-proof as it will be outdoors all the
 time
and must be located at least 3 ft away from the house, more if there are
windows nearby. Give thought to which loads will be on the generator and
how they'll be connected. For a big generator, it may be easier to add a
  subpanel for those loads and run the subpanel off the transfer switch;
 this
has the added benefit of allowing you to add/change some loads in case
 you
  forget something important.

At my last house (in FL), my neighbor (who owned electrician business)
 had a
huge water-cooled 40KW natural gas unit. And he let us hook up after
hurricanes (usually 2-4 days) while power was off. This happened a lot
 in
those days. We learned that a little power went a long way: just 1-2
 lamps,
the refrigerator, computer, TV, and a couple fans made a huge difference.
In fact pulling power through over 200ft of 12 ga extension cords, we
 found
we couldn't run the computer and refrigerator at the same time but that
small amount of power was still wonderful.

I just did an A/B of my Time Windows (no model number on the back, so
I guess they are version 1.0, as it were) and Time Frame 400s.

I think my earlier off-the-cuff assessment was pretty accurate. The
Time Frames seem to have a sort of built-in smile-shaped frequency
response. Treble is sharper, almost shrill. There's much more bass
but it's not at all boomy or thumpy.

The Time Windows have a smooth, warm, even sound all across the
spectrum. The best way I can describe it is that it's kind of like
listening to vinyl on a good turntable for the first time after
getting used to CDs. There's definitely much less bass than with the
Time Frames, though. I can see why Jim uses a subwoofer with his Time
Windows.

The differences are really more subtle than I have made them out to
be. I'm sure non-audiophiles would not be able to tell the
difference, or if they could, wouldn't care. I would be perfectly
happy with either, I'd just turn down the treble a notch on my preamp
if I were to use the Time Frames.

Propane stores pretty well, as in independent source from the vulnerable NG

large propane tank in your yard.

My personal experience: I live on a remote 36,000 acre ranch [that's 35

me, normal is your emergency. I have all the electrical items [likely]
that you have and the order of electrical generation works for me like
 this.
 1. Solar system , 4.5 KW system.. Primary. normal house things, computer,
 lights, refrig.
 2. Diesel Generator, 7.5 KW system... Secondary 120/240, 3 phase
 available
 3. Diesel Generator. 3.5 KW system... Secondary backup. 120/240...
 4. Gas Generator, 3.5 KW system Reserve secondary backup, mobile rig
120/240 with welders on trailer, also wired to run well pumps.
 5. Gas Generator, 1.2 KW system House system backup reserve,
  [dedicated

 small
to handle start loads on all the items at one time.
 6. Numerous 12 volt solar panels dedicated to small battery banks to run
things like the electric entry gate, security cameras, electrified fences,
 communication relays, etc.

As you may guess, I'm a great fan of not depending on public services

determining what your critical loads are. Until you do that, you're
 just

Make a list of must have loads and write down their wattages.

The worst case ones will be small, fractional horsepower motors, like

 inefficient

Generac and other manufacturers have some good sizing programs on the

Once you know what you need kW-wise you can start looking.

Stationary sets run off propane vapor or natural gas. Be careful when
shopping, as propane has a much higher BTU content than natural gas, so

Came across a set of Ohm Acoustics FRS-15 on CL.  The owner wants $200 for the
pair, says they're in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically.

I may go check them out.

Any opinions on Ohm Acoustics?  I already Googled them and found their web site
and several threads in audio forums on them.  The manufacturer is still around,
and want big $$ for repairs.

Hmm.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: DCM speakers (was: OT: Bang Olufsen Beomaster / Vintage
Stereo)

Two separate things here. There's the lift pump, and there's the hand primer
pump that screws into it. One can do without a hand pump, but not get along with
a hand pump that leaks air into or fuel out of the system.

[MBZ] vacuum wyes

2011-08-31 Thread Allan Streib
Was replacing some dried out rubber connector wyes that connect the
various vacuum lines in my W116. I noticed that the one that connects
to the injection pump had a little plastic sleeve on one of the arms.
Blowing through it, it seems that arm has a restrictor in it. All the
connectors I have are unrestricted. What is the purpose of this
restricted connector and is it critical?

It runs the kitchen, lounge and computer room/office.
For instance, turn on the toaster and electric kettle at the same time

Consider replacing that breaker (assuming it is a breaker, since you
said tripping not blowing). The things can actually get tired
with age and will trip at under the rated current. We had a 15A breaker
that kept popping about once a week, I could not find any trouble with
anything on the circuit so I replaced the breaker, and never another
issue with it.

the manual pump to purge any air. The pump was leaking as I operated
it, and after screwing it back down and starting the car, there is now

There are two seals in the screw-down one, neither are
separately available. The one that seals it when screwed
down, however, is easily replaceable (IIRC) but you have
to make your own. (Scissors, buna-N rubber gasket mat'l.)
I did this on the Frankenheap. The other seal makes a mess
when you pump, and cannot be replaced without basically
destroying the pump, but so long as the pump doesn't leak
air when not in use you can put up with a bit of that.

Why would plugging and unplugging it be a pain? I've used my MacBook Pro
for almost 4 years for software development and movies, music, etc. They
are thinner than many Windows laptop making it easy to carry. The power
supplies are small with long cords or you can change the cord to a 2-blade
connector and the power connection on the laptop side is magnetic so if you
trip over the cord your laptop doesn't go flying. Apple also sells an
Airport Express WiFi adapter that is the same size as the power supply. I
usually carry one of these with me too. That way if I'm at someone's house
and they can't remember the password or whatever I'll ask if I can connect
my wifi to their router. All of this is vastly more comfortable to carry
than my last work issued Dell or Compaq machines. The newer Mac's have
Thunderbolt which is basically puts PCI bus on an external cable and one
cable can connect the monitor, any keyboards, mice, hard drives, etc.

Our Whirlpoo dishwasher is making some expensive noises and I might have
to get another one, or wash the dishes by hand, which takes me half a day.
I am going to look at a S/H Bosch machine on Saturday, as it seems Bosch
are the best ones unless you want to spend a squillion.
Any experience with Bosch dishwashers? Some people say that the quality
of the Bosch washers is going downhill as they try to cut costs by
manufacturing low end machines in Turkey.
I pulled the bottom of our current dishwasher and tested the pump, all
seems to be working.

I have bought and installed 2 Bosch dishwashers to replace POS
whatevers. They are very quiet (wifey just started ours a few minutes
ago, can't hear it running) and do a great job washing the dishes in
them. All the models seem to have the same guts but differ in the
controls (location, buttons, electronic, etc.) and the tray thingies
inside. I bought one a coupla years ago from Lowes (our big box home
supplies store) from the floor, was the cheap model with pushbuttons,
and got the guy to swap the trays in it with another one there that had
ones I liked better. (then I beat him down on the price because it was
a floor display) Last I heard the US Bosch dishwashers were
manufactured here in the US, in North or maybe South Carolina. Not sure
what y'all get in the Antipodes.

When you remove your old one, save the insulator blanket and put it on

Re: [MBZ] OT Good, better, Bosch dishwashers

2011-08-31 Thread Hendrik Fay

Yeah the Bosch units have a reputation for being quiet.
The S/H one I am looking at is made in the Fatherland.
The problem I see is that a Whirlpool machine is not worth repairing,
specially seeing that a main wash pump costs between AU$250-300 and that
may not be the problem with it, getting an expert out to look at it will
cost $$$'s, so I figure spending AU$150 on an older Bosch makes more
sense, at least a Bosch will be worth repairing.
There is a fair price range of different new Bosch models, from
AU$600-AU$2000, so I am not sure if the internal bits on a 600 machine
is the same as a 2K machine.
As a side note, I think Siemens sells re-branded Bosch dishwashers and
Miele don't have that good a reputation anymore

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer reliability

2011-08-31 Thread Gerry Archer

The physical layout in the computer area makes changing laptops a pain.
I've used PCs since before windows (for about 16 years) such that they've
become second nature. I can see that after I've learned the Apple system
as well as I know PC/Windows, I'll like it better since it has many
advantages

such as being faster and more intuitive than Windows.
Apple, of course, does not have the installed base that Windows has; and
that
creates problems when trying to solve various glitches that arise. For
example,

I installed Snow Leopard and mail had problems. Isp couldn't help.
Wiped the hd and installed Leopard 10.5xx that came with the Mac which
helped

but still couldn't receive mail.
After talking to four techs at the isp, the last one finally transferred me
to someone

who knew Apple and he solved the problem in about five minutes.

In general, I get along well on both the PC and the Mac and I'm even
beginning to
figure out Linux. Sort of a hobby after one retires, but a slow hobby
since one

doesn't learn as fast as when one is younger.

I do carry the Macbook when I go out and like its thinness, smaller size,
and less
weight. My Macbook has built in wifi which works better than the PC at
hotspots

such as restaurants and airline terminals.

This Macbook probably doesn't have Thunderbolt since it's 2 years old, but
it
sounds like it would be considerable advantage for one using it as a
desktop.

Why would plugging and unplugging it be a pain? I've used my MacBook Pro
for almost 4 years for software development and movies, music, etc. They
are thinner than many Windows laptop making it easy to carry. The power
supplies are small with long cords or you can change the cord to a 2-blade
connector and the power connection on the laptop side is magnetic so if
you

trip over the cord your laptop doesn't go flying. Apple also sells an
Airport Express WiFi adapter that is the same size as the power supply. I
usually carry one of these with me too. That way if I'm at someone's
house

and they can't remember the password or whatever I'll ask if I can connect
my wifi to their router. All of this is vastly more comfortable to carry
than my last work issued Dell or Compaq machines. The newer Mac's have
Thunderbolt which is basically puts PCI bus on an external cable and one
cable can connect the monitor, any keyboards, mice, hard drives, etc.

reputation for quality by cheaping out?
Guess we have all heard about companies starting/buying another company

A good reputation takes years/decades to build and not very long to destroy.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread LWB250
Liquid withdrawal fuels systems are more efficient and less prone to variances
in ambient temperatures, but the hardware involved makes them pricey.  It's
unusual to see liquid withdrawal unless the location has low ambient
temperatures that would prevent vaporization in the main tank.  Also, there is
some potential for liquid withdrawal systems to have difficulty supplying full
load fuel volumes on initial start if ambient temperatures are low.  Without a
fully functioning block heater, there may not be enough heat available from the
cooling system water jacket to vaporize fuel quickly enough to generate the
volume required for full load.

Also, code does not allow liquid (high pressure) fuel supplies inside of a
building, so the unit has to be outside.

A liquid withdrawal system can easily add $1000 to the cost of a generator set.

If propane, you'll need a big tank because (1) you'll
burn a lot and (2) small tanks may not maintain pressure at high flow rates.

Liquid feed!  The IMPCO fuel evaporator/regulator is
the gold standard here.  Plumbs into the cooling system
to get the heat.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread LWB250
Buy in bulk during the early to mid summer months, as that is when the price is
usually lowest.  Fall has a lot of farmers running grain dryers, so that can
drive up the price later in the year.  Winter, well, you can understand why
prices are higher in the winter

Former business partner had three 1000 gallon tanks on his property.  Worked
out a deal with his brother (next door, two 1000 gallon tanks) and the local
propane supplier to buy once a year in mid summer.  Cash, of course.

1.999 per US gallon last year, 2.399 this year, plus sales tax.
Tank rental built into the price. That's for prepaying in July for
October-April's propane.

I assume Canadian pricing would be different.

Difficult to say since it only happens occasionally and the
test programs show no problems.
Also, it would be nice to have a faster PC with more memory

Re: [MBZ] OT Good, better, Bosch dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers truly rock. You can load them any which way and they
still get the dishes sparkling clean A quaint touch is the manual-clean
food strainer at the bottom, which is a snap to remove and clean.

Guess we have all heard about companies starting/buying another company to
act as a agent for low end products, so as not to damage the main companies
 image.
A good reputation takes years/decades to build and not very long to
 destroy.

The S/H Bosch I am looking at is supposed to be in good condition but I
would want the seller to guarantee that it is working as it should.

Don't know much about FP dishwashers but they don't have a good reputation

Quality is probably luck of the draw if you are shopping low end of any
brand. {Possibly also high end, for that matter.) By way of personal
experience I once bought a broken Bosch washer, it was easy to work on.
However it wasn't supposed to be broken, thus I returned it after proving
what was wrong would cost money to fix.

We have a Fisher Paykel DD602 we bought known broken and I nursed back to
health; that machine is great to work on because you can leave one drawer
inop and the other one still works! It is showing its age but was cheap
($100 pickup only on Ebay), it seems like they should be more common on
 your
 side of the world...

If you don't want a used dishwasher then I have no ideas, I've only bought
one new - cheapest of the cheap - and it was loud and annoying. Then I
 sold
 the house.

 Best,
 Tim
Alternatively, why don't you just ask your butler to do the dishes?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer reliability

2011-08-31 Thread Brian Toscano
I can understand the support issues. When I moved from Window to Mac a few
years ago I still needed to run Windows applications so I converted my work
issued laptop to a virtual machine that I could use with VMWare Fusion. In
my case I converted a Windows partition (bootcamp) to a virtual machine, but
VMWare now has software you can install on the Windows machine and it will
create a virtual machine on your Mac. It even will sync the two, so if
you're writing a document in Word on the Windows machine while VMWare is
creating the image, you'll have the most recent save on your virtual
machine!
