2012-07-30 Thread Dieselhead

That car is hosed. You'd better dump it fast.

I'll give you $500 for it. Kaleb might too. I hear he is short of cars.

Muffler on my '95 E300 no longer muffles. Pipe is broken at the
joint just aft of the center muffler/baffle thing (or is that a
catalytic converter?)

Should I simply replace the broken part, which is the center
muffler/baffle thing, or replace the entire assembly?

Re. "Inspection ever 100 hrs."

I don't know what your experience with FAA approved inspection cycles for
airplanes might be, so I don't wish to insult you. However, the driving
rule with 100 hr. [or any other inspection for that matter, Annual, "A''
check, "B" check, "C" check, etc etc etc] is that the machine be returned
to service with parts that meet or exceed original certified [by the FAA]
manufacturers specifications. Cost is never an objective concern in
reaching that apex of care, in aviation. If the part is only made and
certified from "unobtainium" , then the replacement part must also be...
etc.
Also, if it does not pass inspection, it is illegal to operate it [fly].

For a few perfectionist car owners [very few] this might work.. For the
common "auto user" meh... not so much..

The FAA Motto is after all:
"We are the FAA and We are not happy until You are not happy"

I've ridden a fair amount in Airbus planes the last few years (always keep
meaning to keep a log) and I can't really tell any difference comfort-wise
between them and a Boeing. A new Airbus is preferable to an old Boeing and vice
versa.

My least favorite current ride is an MD-88. I always seem to get seated in the

I can't speak for an 85 model, but my 1979 300TD did not have the three point
belts, but basic two point lap belts.

I wonder if someone converted this car using an older seat and belts. It's
certainly easy enough to do, as everything is prepped on the chassis to do it -
you merely have to add the seat cushions and the belts. All the mounting
points and everything are already there.

engines, compared with the 8 engines on the B-52, and lots more
thrust. If I recall correctly, that was a promo flight at

Benz diesels since the '85 California models. On '86s and '87s the cat was
removed from some cars as part of the trap oxidizer recall campaign (which
was not a monolithic event as is often implied but happened a little at a
time with different cars getting different treatment depending on the

Max,

My 95 developed a crack right at the flange also. I took another piece pipe
a little larger in diameter and welded it to the pipe and the flange. The
crack had propagated more than 360 degrees around the pipe. Luckily the
crack didn't stay at the flange and moved away as it grew. When I fixed it
there was about 1/4 inch between beginning and end. Repair is still holding.
I have also replaced the rear muffler too, had to cut the pipe just ahead of
the rear axle.

I got to fly on a BA 777 right after they came out, it was the second
BOS-LHR flight for the airplane. It was brand new, smelled like a new
car, and the BA crew were s excited to be on it (it was "their"
airplane!). I spent a good time on the flt chatting them up and getting
a tour of a lot of the features of the airplane, while sipping some very
old Scotch agricultural products... One of the (very experienced)
pilots popped back at one point for something, we got talking too and he
was really really excited to be flying it. (I got the impression he
might have had a lot of hours flying in Europe in the past). I got an

If you want to take it to just a plain-ol' muffler shop, first get the
correct pieces from Rusty.

If the rest of the system is good condition, replace just the broken part.

There should be a slot just below the side window where the belt
goes through to the spool. What I see is belts that look like
lap belts across the seat. I also don't see recessed cavity in
the seat upright where the latch is supposed to be. So is this
a seat from a much older car? The little recess for the latches
isn't a simple alteration.

I know of no mechanics who would diagnose and repair the internals of an
electronic module. They would simply swap in a new one (if available)
or tell you it's not fixable.
