[MBZ] Interviewing
Many years ago two of us developed a system of interviewing that proved perfect in finding the best engineering dept candidates. We had about a dozen characteristics we pursued. They ranged from appearance to technical qualification. A candidate was average, below or above. We interviewed for 30 minutes then gave the candidate a brief writing exercise while we reviewed our evaluations to that point. Then back for another 10 minutes of interviewing. We had to agree on each point or we further explored that characteristic. Our selection always gave us excellent candidates. All this before affirmative action of course. My favorite question was; have you ever worked for a boneheaded supervisor? What great answers. After cleaning and lubricating with conductive grease every electrical connection I could find under the hood of my '85 300TD, I thought I must've done something right as the tach was working fine but the AC compressor wouldn't turn on unless I used a jumper wire between the female pins of the Klima relay so I thought the Klima must be OK since the tach was working. A bit of stray grease in the wrong place is a resistor between lines that aren't supposed to have a resistor. That isn't likely to be a problem for high current stuff, but it easily could mess with sensor and other low current systems. So I use plain grease, typically wheel bearing grease because I can buy it in a tub and it survives well. For everything from battery terminals to audio connections. It may seem counter-intuitive, but I have been doing this for more than two decades. It works. The grease excludes air and water and thus prevents corrosion. The only place I have had trouble is headlights. The heat from the light cooked the grease when I had used lithium white grease. Grease stuffed into a crimp butt splice makes for a rather good weather proof splice too. I have never had a instance of an intermittent connection because of the grease. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 190D brakes
My wife reported that the brakes in the 190D made a noise and then got quiet and it scared her. Apparently her definition of quiet and mine aren't the same because when I tried it the right front wheel made an ungodly racket. It'd had a hardened spot on the rotor for some time so I'd already ordered new rotors and pads. Yesterday I installed. Remember a couple weeks ago I asked about replacing the rotor without pulling the hub? A year or two ago I'd done the bearings on the passenger front and the rotor kept falling off as I tried to set the preload. Well yesterday that ^%$@#! rotor wouldn't come off for love nor money. I had to pull the hub and balance it on two 2x4s and beat the hub out of the rotor. On that side the pads fell out of the caliper when I pulled it, neither had any friction material to speak of. On the other side one of the big bolts that holds the caliper on would NOT come off. I resorted to the heat wrench which is hard because the small bolts have a little rubber bellows thing on them, I didn't realize at the time I could take rubber bellows thing off. On that side the pads were fine... I *think* when I did the bearing I got grease on the rotor which created the hardspot and ruined the pads. So it goes. Rusty sent me ceramic pads, I don't remember what brand he said they were but they were in a Textar box. Apparently Akebono doesn't have an application for a 190D. The rotors he sent (I spec'd the cheap PBR ones which I had used on my '83 240D with success) are very nice and thick. They weigh about twice the ones I took off and are marked Made in Germany on the rim. My wife is VERY pleased with the new brakes and much more confident in the car and my abilities. [MBZ] 240D hood latch
If you were at the Q you know I had some trouble with my 240D. It consumes a little coolant which I think is a headgasket leak out the block. It had been just bubbling a little but seems to have gotten worse. Anyway I screwed up and let it run low and things got a little dicy on the ride down, the ride back was fine although I took it slow just to be sure. Anyway while I was at the Q I managed to break the hood latch pull. In messing with it yesterday I realized about half the problem is the plastic baby buggy bumper that the latch hits when the hood is closed is missing. That allowed the metal to chew up a little and grab the latch as I tried to open it. On the other side one of the big bolts that holds the caliper on would NOT come off. I resorted to the heat wrench On my 123s and 126s I've had to resort to a jack under the end of the wrench, using the weight of the car to apply force. That has worked well. I think those bolts are heat-treated alloy, I wonder if the blue wrench might weaken them. MB recommends new bolts when replacing these, and it might be a good idea if heat is applied. It is nice when a job goes as planned, even with the heat wrench that was added to the original plan. I will leave the Attaboy for Wilton, as it is his name brand. The latter is of course a nice feeling. -Curt __**_ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/**archive/http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/**mailman/listinfo/mercedes_**okiebenz.comhttp://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com __**_ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/**archive/http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/**mailman/listinfo/mercedes_**okiebenz.comhttp://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I've done that on a 123 also but in this case either the wrench was pointed in the wrong direction (needing the jack to pull it down) or was at such an angle because of the strut being in the way that I couldn't make it work. BTW I didn't heat the bolt, I heated the casting the bolt goes into. If you heat the bolt it expands and gets tighter in the hole. Snoring is bad for marriages but good for the twin bed industry. Of course, serious snorers sometimes have to move into the guest room. Once shared a hotel room with a friend. Never before or since have I heard anything like his snoring. Since sleep was no option, even after blocking it with four pillows, I turned on a tape recorder with the idea of playing it for him later. When played the next morning, the transistors had continuously peaked producing nothing but a steady roar. How his wife stood it I'll never know. It is (was?*) an extra fee if you want to be legit, or a lot of work on an iPhone if you want to be illegit. In any case I think Verizon cuts you off if you use too much data (2 GB?) in a month, and it is against the terms of service if you use mobile data as a home internet connection so they could cut you off for that too. *The possibility here is because Verizon recently (last few weeks) got told by the FCC that they couldn't block tethering apps from the Android store. I don't know if that will/has reflected back into their plans - free tethering for everyone - or will just affect Android users with no change in TOS. While in Greenland in '78 Col. Base Commander and I flew with Danish Air Force crew on their C-130H into the far-south Greenland air field/village of Narsassuaq. Checking into the hotel there, I was shocked by price of the lodging and obviously showed it. Colonel eased up beside me and whispered in my ear, Wilt, I'll 'let' you share a room with me if you'll promise me you don't snore. I replied, Indeed, I don't. That night, with each of us snug in our twin beds, the room began to shake and shudder as he got into some absolutely first class, gold medal, champion snoring. I was up and down all night kicking his bed post to try to make him stop for a few minutes so I could doze off for a bit - very little sleep that night for me. Next morning, I said to 'im, Damn/doggone your time, please don't ever 'let' me share a room with you again. He grinned and said, What? Did I snore? I don't snore, do I? Supposedly to remove the oxygen from the iron oxide. The only acid I found listed was pyrrolidone carboxylic acid. Not sure what the chelating agent would be in molasses: ..The total sugar content in molasses is approximately 50 %. Minor carbohydrates are glucose, fructose, raffinose and some other oligo- or polysaccharides. Their concentration is below 1 % and depends to a significant extent on the manufacturing process. Some of the minerals found in molasses are potassium followed by sodium, calcium and magnesium. Their content depends mainly on soil type and water availability. Additionally, the calcium and sodium content is influenced by processing practices. About 20 % of the total mass consists of non-sucrose organic matter, in particular of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) containing substances, such as betaine. In addition molasses contains free and bound amino acids and pryrrolidone carboxylic acid (a conversion product of glutamine). In the manufacturing process most of the amino acids undergo changes so that less than the amounts expected from beet roots are found in molassessnip Gerry From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu molasses ... vinegar, coca cola To remove rust, or prevent it? Re: [MBZ] 190D brakes NOT Snoring
One summer I worked in Virginia, found a room in a house with one guy who owned it, and one other room was vacant at the time. The owner, a fairly young guy, was a realtor. He was out evenings until whenever, then his brother and various other people would come over to the house to have a few pops and other things before going out to a private club where they would party until 2 or 3 or whenever. I had to get up at like 6AM so usually by 10-10:30 I was trying to get some sleep, usually slept with my aircraft lineman noise foes on to get any sleep.. I have seared, seared into my mind, Dr. John singing I was in the right place but it must have been the wrong time... as that was usually the last album they would put on the stereo, then forget to turn it off when they left, so that it just kept playing over and over and over I still like the song lo these many years later, but I sometimes wonder if snoring or that song is worse to listen to all night long. --R On 9/10/12 8:23 PM, Max Dillon wrote: Once on a church trip, four guys to a room, last guy to arrive hands out ear plugs all around; we needed 'em. [MBZ] Generator question...
I scored an Ingersoll-Rand G25 (with autostart capability). It looks to use a Mitsubishi S4Q series engine that uses what looks to be a Bosch type A inline pump (instead of the distributor type) I've managed to get parts catalogs for the unit, but no real service information; from the drawings I can see that it uses gears in the timing case (no chain to stretch!), that it is a pushrod valve-train, and that it appears to use solid lifters. I'd presume that a dial gauge would be used to locate the lowest spot on the intake cam #1, and that a half-turn of the crankshaft is needed between cylinders (1-3-4-2), then go back and do the same with the exhaust. The adjusters are on the push-rod end of the rocker arms, so I'd bet that lash is measured under the valve end of the arm... Does anyone out there have a service manual for the S4Q series that they'd share? I'd like to confirm the adjustment procedures and to see actual numbers for the clearances (the one thing I don't have!) Obligatory Mercedes content–it looks like it will be a lot simpler to adjust the valves on this engine.
