On the front end of the solenoid are three terminals, two large and one small. The top large terminal has a cable going to the battery. The bottom large terminal has a jumper that goes into the starter motor. The small terminal is the one that powers the solenoid. Using a large screwdriver, short the small terminal to the top terminal. This will power the solenoid, causing its movable core to be pulled to the front, simultaneously pushing the Bendix gear into the flywheel's teeth and shorting the top large terminal to the bottom large terminal, causing the starter motor to turn. Re: [MBZ] Amsoil ATF in an older transmission
Many old-timers will steer you away from synthetic because of unspecified troubles they've heard about. Its the Guy down at pub phenomenon. They heard from a guy down at the pub that synthetic oil/ATF/grease/whatever is bad stuff so they'll never use it. Never mind that they have no first hand experience with the stuff. Yes seals will often leak when changing to synthetic lubricants as crud gets cleaned away but frequently the seals will then swell and the same leaks will then seal up. I've seen this many times when switching to synthetic engine oil. -Curt Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2012 20:34:40 -0700 From: Alan Clarke alanc...@pacbell.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] Amsoil ATF in an older transmission Message-ID: 508a04d0.4040...@pacbell.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Wanted some advise or thoughts on using Amsoil ATF in my 85 Turbo. It is a synthetic rated as a Dexron II and III replacement. One mechanic I respect thought it was bad idea to use for reasons of causing leaking seals and the like in an older tranny. The tranny has been serviced regularly and has under 150K mile. Another mechanic who works on Mercedes thought it would be OK as long as it was an approved fluid by MBZ for their vehicles. I'm not sure if it's approved or not. Good research Rick... the specs are important, especially the older ones listed there. The Amsoil looks like it will work.. I'm a big fan of Febi 08971... you can find it by look up the equivalent MB part number 000 989 92 03 on various sites on the internet. It does wonders for improving the shift quality on 722.0, 1, 2, 3, 4 transmissions... And its a Dexron IID fluid. I can see that being an issue. Synth in a garage queen may not be cost effective. If you swap out oil every year even if you do not make the miles, I guess dino is just as good. Putting it every other place is a better deal. Not enough wear on the fluid in the trans or diff, so you can keep it there for the life of the part, or you hit the miles. Re: [MBZ] Amsoil ATF in an older transmission
I would not fear using Synth in an old transmission. I have used it in both Gump and Frosch with no troubles or leakage. It does tend to clean up the garbage inside the transmission, so you do a short run for the first fill. Also used it in standard street cars 10-20 years old. When you change the fluid, swap in a fresh filter and the seal. No leaks. I have only used Mobil 1, so no idea if Amsoil is any less of a product, but I would doubt. Drain the TC when you do the fluid so you have a true clean system. clay On Oct 25, 2012, at 8:34 PM, Alan Clarke wrote: Wanted some advise or thoughts on using Amsoil ATF in my 85 Turbo. [MBZ] OT: Any Xorg gurus on the list?
I spent a good chunk of hours at work earlier today trying to get a two-monitor setup working. It actually does work, except the resolution is wrong. These are a pair of 30 Dell monitors, 2560x1600. Specs say 101 PPI. Everything as far as the desktop works, I can drag windows from one to display to the other, etc. but the horizontal resolution seems out of whack. Everything looks very pixelated, and as I move windows horizontally pixels drop out and reappear. I have a basic /etc/X11/xorg.conf that sets up a Screen with a Virtual size of 5120x1600. The card is an ATI Radeon HD 4670 with two DVI connectors, and uses the radeon driver. (I am using dual-link DVI cables on each monitor). xrandr -q reports: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 5120 x 1600, maximum 5120 x 1600 DVI-0 connected 2560x1600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 641mm x 401mm DVI-1 connected 2560x1600+2560+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 641mm x 400mm xdpyinfo reports: dimensions:5120x1600 pixels (1354x423 millimeters) resolution:96x96 dots per inch ...so that all looks OK, I think. The size reported by xdpyinfo is a bit off, should actually be 1282mm x 400mm if you look at the sizes reported by the individual monitors, above. The difference appears to be either caused by or resulting in the 96x96 DPI resolution, when the monitor is actually 101 DPI. But in the xorg.0.log I see [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-0 connected [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-1 connected [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Using user preference for initial modes [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-0 using initial mode 2560x1600 [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-1 using initial mode 2560x1600 [ 5698.647] (II) RADEON(0): Using default gamma of (1.0, 1.0, 1.0) unless otherwise stated. I love my 83 300d! Just got back from a trip to Rochester and back. 160 gps miles, 5.35 gallons of fuel comes to 29.9mpg driving like I stole it. It has NA gears in the rear so it comes off the line pretty well but really turns some rpm's(tach doesn't work) at 75 and 80mph but runs along smooth as can be at that speed. Gotta do a valve adjustment and general checkover to get ready for an 1800 mile trip to Parris Island to pick up my son after boot camp. So, 60 gallons or so of veggie oil should get me there and back. That's about $5 worth of filtering and 1 hour of my time to process the fuel. Re: [MBZ] resto?
Yes, I realize that it's not technically restoration but the process is basically the same- rust repair, paint, mechanical, interior. All this is done to a very high standard within a week. Quite impressive! He is a bit heavy on the bondo use though. Restorers like Paul Russel and Co., for example, won't have any of that! They metal finish all the way. That can't be done in a week. Re: [MBZ] Starting my 240D With a Wire
My 240D went through a few years of intermittent no-juicy-no-starty. I ran a hot wire from the fuse block into the dash, put a intermittent pushbutton switch on the lower-left dash near the door. The other side of the switch was run directly to the small terminal in the starter. At the time, no one had heard of the ign switch electrics ever wearing out. So I ran several years with the push button. When it didn't start with the key, I'd hit the pushbutton and it took right up. I eventually figured out it was the switch, and replaced it, and never needed the pushbutton after that. The ign switch does wear out sometimes, especially in 25+ year old Diesels with lots of start cycles. I suppose I should have told everyone is a 4 speed. I stopped on the way home to pick up my new glasses and when I came back out it started up just fine. So I have no idea. I reckon that it was a problem with the ignition electric in the dash, it would not have started. I'm going to go out in a couple of minutes and test the small wire to the solenoid for voltage when the key is on.
