It has been nearly a decade. Perhaps I was thinking of the cruise stalk

Regardless, there is enough room to spray it.

Sometimes the upper radiator hose would stay pressurized after the

I'd love to borrow that fancy torque wrench that Rolf used, and
re-torque my head bolts.

I'm also concerned about a problem with one of the hydraulic lifters.
You may recall that I had to bleed one down to get full valve closure
for one valve. When I fixed that, I discovered that the bore for the
intake valve lifter for the number six cylinder has a problem. The
bottom half of the bore is too big, looks like it was eroded away. The
lifter can get cocked in the bore, making it very hard to remove.

At first I thought that some grit must have contaminated that bore
during my work, and wore out the bottom half. After talking with a
machinist, he explained that is not possible. If grit had contaminated
the bore, it would have scored all of the bore equally, not just the
lower half, and the scoring would look nothing like erosion. He thinks
it is a casting flaw, and had probably been there from the factory.
I'm worried that eventually the lifter will get cocked so bad it will
break the camshaft.

So I'm going to dive in again soon, work has finally slowed a little
so I'm not traveling every week, but I'm not too happy about pulling
the head off again.

I really wish there was an oversize repair lifter, do I could machine
out the bore to restore it and keep this head.

Re: [MBZ] Fan Clutch Botch job cause Stu said so

2013-03-08 Thread Dan Penoff
I have no problems with the fan clutch or the cooling system. In this climate
you want everything to be working at its peak, as efficiencies really kick in
when you have 98F ambients with 100% humidity, that's all.

It has been my understanding that the fluid can leak out slowly over the life
if the vehicle, so I would expect that on a vehicle that is approaching 20
years and nearly 250,000 miles that the fan clutch is probably in need of being
topped off.

It has also been my finding that the oil used is 10,000 CST, so that is what I
will use to top off. Thanks, Hendrick.

I will also be installing an 1.1k ohm resistor across the fan sensor to lower
the aux fan threshold to around 90C or thereabouts.

All of this is proactive in anticipation of the normal summer temps around
here, that's all.

A flush and fill with the new blue coolant and a new thermostat while I'm
there, too.

[MBZ] OT - SONDYREINDEER

2013-03-08 Thread WILTON

OK; it's Friday - time for a moo -- ah, ah reindeer tale:

SONDY REINDEER
By Wilton Strickland

In 1978, at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, I occasionally drove up a VERY
steep ice/packed snow and ice road (first photo link below) with fine gravel
sprinkled on top of it to a plateau and hills above the base to view some
countryside and observe a small herd of reindeer (caribou , 2nd photo link
below) that lived there. I'd pull up beside several of them 3 or 4 feet
away and admire/study the way they scratched away snow covering their food
(dry grass), take a bite, chew, etc. None of them ever showed any fear at
all of me; 'went up to see them one afternoon, and found two reindeer heads
lying by the road. 'Few days later, my Danish contractor chief engineer
invited me to his home one evening for dinner - 'had some mighty fine
reindeer stew.

Also of special interest up in this area was the rounded top of a hill where
a glacier and the ice cap, then visible on the horizon about 15 miles away,
had polished a large area of granite to a mirror finish. 'Enjoyed driving
my truck up onto it and watching my many visitors, including a couple of
USAF generals, other military and civilian officials from headquarters and
Danish, Canadian and Swedish government officials ponder the awesomeness of
the time and power of grains of sand and fine powder-like sand combined with
ice under tremendous pressure and its imperceptible movements to perform
such a task. (edge of glacier/ice cap in 3rd 4th photo links below) BTW,
I was never so bold or foolish as to drive up onto or try to stand on the
mirror-like granite when it was wet.

BTW, getting back down the VERY steep road, especially in winter was
puckering - entailed constant pumping of brakes to keep truck from getting
too fast and careening or slipping on ice off cliff, etc. See 5th photo
link below - summertime hill descent. (Photo really does not do it
justice - it is STEEP; seems even steeper on ice.)

Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD

2013-03-08 Thread Dieselhead
No, that is not what I am saying at all. Follow
the book procedure. On a normal bolt, the more
you turn it, the tighter it gets. On the stretch
bolts, as you make the two 90º turns per the
book , at some point in the turn it no longer
takes increasing power as the bolt turns. This
means you have reached the point of elasticity
of the bolt. (as designed to do) This is when
the bolt stretches. WHat you feel on the handle
is a more or less linear increase of force, then
a levelling off. On the second turn, the last
30-40 º of turn is typically stretch.

You only measure the stretch when you take them out of the head.

Or are you asking about retorquing? I have never
seen an instruction for retorquing. If you want
to retorque one at a time, then yes, I think you
can pull, measure, then retorque. I am not sure
about the 10 min wait. You could do all of them
fhe first 90, then wait 10, and do the second
turn on all and still satisfy the book without
removing the head.

You could also try a rudimentary Cyl head leakage
test. through the inj hole or the GP hole to see
if you can hear any leaks.

So should I pull one bolt at a time, measure
stretch to make sure it is still within spec,
then torque in the three stages without the ten
minute wait before the last 90 degree turn, or
do I need to keep the wait?

How did it handle on the high speed roads? Was it rough riding? Would you

NO! - Loosen the bolts in the pattern in the book - then re-torque/stretch

How does the cost to purchase compare with a same vintage Honda Civic?
I don't know what it is like where you folks are, but around here a Ford
of any sort will depreciate much faster than a Honda and the Honda will
be pretty bullet proof for a lot of miles.
Based upon that, if I could buy a Honda for similar money up front, I
would go with it as it will likely be worth more in a few years time
than the Ford.

Around here Hondas cost more than an equivalent size Ford and don't get
close to the same fuel mileage. Grand daughter has an Accord that she's
been happy with for 4 or 5 years. I drove it but didn't like it. Honda was
once a reliability champ but lately they have slipped, or so I've read.
I've looked at Hondas and Toyotas and I'm not happy with the local dealers
whose salesmen feel they are doing you a favor by waiting on you. Son
bought a Ford (I forget the name) hybrid two years ago and he's racked up
about 60K miles with no repairs. He averages about 37-43 mpg but it's a
heavier car.

Rusty has high expectations for me to maintain. He has dedicated 28
years to his

OK, someone help me. I came back from several days off the grid and find
numerous list emails talking about Rusty either ascending to Papal office,
retiring, passing the business to someone I don't yet know, or is it all
list humor??

The facts Mam.. Just the facts

Actually General Parts sold Car Quest or rather most of the Car Quest
stores to Advance early this year.

The nice thing about my local CQ is they've got a lot of what I need in
stock, front wheel bearings, oil filter, fuel filter etc. And most other
stuff they can have tomorrow morning at no extra charge. Suspension parts
I've bought from them are usually marked Moog, made in the USA which I
appreciate.

Curt, WorldPac owns Car Quest so Trent can drop ship all that as well.

And often the parts listed are simply not available at any price.

I shall order some from Trent but will probably rely more on my local
Car Quest.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: you're advises please

2013-03-08 Thread Gerry Archer

How does the cost to purchase compare with a same vintage Honda Civic?
I don't know what it is like where you folks are, but around here a Ford
of any sort will depreciate much faster than a Honda and the Honda will
be pretty bullet proof for a lot of miles.
Based upon that, if I could buy a Honda for similar money up front, I
would go with it as it will likely be worth more in a few years time
than the Ford.

Randy

Depreciation is waaay down the list of reasons to buy a particular car.
At age 83, ease of maintainence, availability and cost of parts, mpg, ease
of entry and exit, roominess for driver, handling, ride, and likelyhood of
disastrous parts failure (interference engines); these are the principal
factors in my decision to buy a particular car. If there was a good
Mercedes indy who wasn't in the business of ripping off MB owners near here,
I would simply get him to keep my two MBs running and wouldn't even think
about buying another car.
I can still fix my MBs but its slow, some jobs are painful, and its not much
fun anymore.

Nevertheless, thanks for the information and suggestions,
Gerry

It's aluminum, under high pressure, and too expensive for me to risk
messing it up. YMMV.
