[MBZ] need help re-installing W123 wagon drip rail end piece

I can get close but one end or the other pops off the car when I try to tap it home. The long straight drip rail run from the windshield back is no problem. I'm planning to visit the bone yards to find some W123s to practice RRing this piece (sedans and wagons since the end section is similar) but am looking for hints or tips from anyone who has been here and done this. Is it best to start at the top next to the long section of rail or at the base of the rear side window? The curved piece seems to have an odd bend to create a friction fit but it's just not happening for me. So frustrating! Dave, As we discussed earlier, I did this on my 79 wagon and I believe I started at the top where the piece meets the long drip rail piece so everything matched up. I don't recall much about putting this piece on, but I do recall putting the drip rail piece on and it was a real PITA. If you haven't already, find some pieces of oak to fashion a tool to drive these on. I'll look in my W123 CD to see if they have a diagram for the tool. [MBZ] Grrr
I put a new alternator in my '84 190D a couple weeks ago. In doing so I noticed the pulley didn't line up perfectly with the crank, this was the same on the old alternator (which I put in back in December) so I moved my spacers over. Unfortunately this alternator had a different kind of center nut so I had to put in some washers so the nut would run tight against the pulley. The first time I drove it any amount I had breakfast with Fred. On my way home the nut and therefore pulley came loose and dropped the belt. Drat. Fred to the rescue! He came and we put the belt back on, drove a couple miles to his friend's house, pulled the alternator (which is really easy), put the pulley back on tight and ran it on with an impact gun and locktite, not coming loose again. Until today (about 500 miles later). On the way to work just as I got off the highway I felt the steering go heavy, looked down and saw the temp gauge at HOT, shut the engine down and pulled off the highway, managed to roll onto a quiet street. Pulley loose, belt dropped. Fortunately I was close enough to walk to work. Fred had been encouraging me to buy his '87 190D so I gave him a shout to tell him the tale and inquire about how soon I could get it. Around lunch time Fred called me, he was in town and within a couple minutes was at my office. We drove to the car and as I pulled the alternator (with a wrench he had given me) he pulled not one but TWO alternators out of his trunk. One was a junkyard pull that looked pretty good so I installed it. The model number was similar but slightly different, I forget exactly but the one I had was like a 43, the one Fred bought was like a 41. I installed Fred's alternator and it works like a dream. In fact it fits better than the one I took out. I *think* my problem this whole time is that the alts I've been getting from WorldPac (through CarQuest) haven't been exactly right... Anyway I started the car and drove back the mile or so to work with no odd noises or feelings or smells. It looks as though I may have dodged a bullet although I recall writing that once before. Re: [MBZ] How I beat the saw
For what it's worth, it seems ALL of these 2-cycle engines use Zama or Walbro carburetors. I planned to rebuild the carb on my Poulan Pro leaf blower but the kit was $12 and a whole new carb was just $23 (guess which one I ordered). My blower got to the point the choke needed to be part-way on for the engine to run. This is a symptom of a stiff lower diaphragm (the one that works the needle valve) in the carb (Zama, by the way). I suspect this is a casualty of the gasohol we are forced to use. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Hans Neureiter Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2013 5:46 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] How I beat the saw Husqvarna bought Poulan On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 6:04 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] need help re-installing W123 wagon drip rail end piece
Thanks for the on list reply, Dan. Good to know you started at the roof line. I had wondered if the paint build-up from the respray had a negative effect on reattaching the piece but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have no problem seating the long rails with a rubber mallet. I used painters tape and towels to protect the new paint. The trim removal tools from harbor freight work very well. (see someone else's drip rail attachment pictures at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/3467789-post422.html) I've been messing with this so long I can now repeatedly remove and replace the long rail without damaging the paint. Similarly, I am able to seat half the curved piece but after ruining one rear piece buy forcing the aluminum channel too much, I am now cautious with the applied force. Almost immediately after posting here I had a light bulb moment and called the Classic Center which is local to me. They are all at Pebble Beach right now but my trusty sales guy said the restoration crews should be back next week and may be able to assist or give pointers. Fingers crossed. So three cheers for Fred the best friend a boy could have! -Curt ___ So, did you buy the spare car from Fred? Randy who had a wonky alternator on a 1968 Chevy pickup for close to 25 years (The engine had been changed by the previous owner and something was different. The alternator and the balancer did not align well with the water pump. We cut 1/4 off the nose of the balancer in a big lather and I cut a bit of the alternator away in order to get it to work and it stayed like that until I sold the truck. I got it in 1984 or 5 and sold it about 2 years ago) I have a friend who bought a motorhome in Florida or somewhere down SE and drove it home. Big block Chevy engine. He replaced the alternator at least 2 times on the way from there to Canada and later discovered it was not the right alternator for the application. I think, sometimes people cannot get what they should have and are anxious to get moving so they put whatever is available on and carry on. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Maybe the only old tires I've dealt with were cheap and didn't use a high TPI or good quality rubber. Most of the tires I'm running now are 120TPI which ends up being very comfortable. This is probably why I thought older tires didn't use the higher TPI of current tech. The Vittoria Zaffiros I got from Nashbar a couple of months ago have thicker rubber in the center than any road tire I used to buy, and I got the idea the casing was coarser than 66tpi. My neighbor, retired military with too much time on his hands, has been pampering his '83 300CD with all sorts of non-urgent work (my judgment, not his). His latest project is to remove and replace his starter motor strictly for preventive reasons. This topic must have come up on this forum. Where would I find that archival material? He says that with some effort he has been able to crack loose the lower bolt, but the top bolt won't budge, in part because he does not have the proper tool, and because it is tight and difficult to access. He has soaked it with penetrating oil and is on a seven day waiting period for that to soak in. Meanwhile he tells me that the proper tool is a Hazet 10 mm hex wrench or socket for busting loose that bolt. So anyway, I'd like to give him any information on how others have tackled this job. Its helpful to have a helper to get the hex key into the bolt. Its not a fun job, but not really that terrible once you get the hang of it. I remember doing it once laying in packed snow... that was no fun. Jaime On Thu, Aug 15, 2013 at 9:33 PM, Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com wrote: With a series of 1/2 drive extensions and universal joints. Re: [MBZ] 123 Starter Motor Woes
Glad to. 1/2 inch drive Ingersol Rand air impact gun. 125 psi. air pressure. Impact wiggle tail socket adaptor coupled with the 10 MM hex tool [Snapon, in my case] and several long 1/2 inch extensions to put the impact gun away from the transmission and in the space along side it. Set the gun at highest setting for impact and engage trigger... after making sure you have the 10 MM hex fully engaged and good forward pressure on the extensions. I use a leather glove on the hand guiding the extensions while running the impact to keep everything perfectly aligned.. Should hammer for a few strokes and spin right out.. Helps if you have the car on 4 ea. 3 ton jackstands at high enough setting to give you room to work. Lay a piece of cardboard on shop floor to lay on, which will give you another 5 inches rather than use a creeper.. Good luck... Grant... If there had been normal power on (remember the Asiana crash), the engines would be spooled up a mile out. Looks to me as it they were dead. just windmilling, especially since the aircraft also hit some trees before impact. I'm not an aeronautical engineer, but it looks to me as if they were just windmilling on impact. Deadstick landing in an Airbus 300, what a thought! Had to have been a surprise for the crew as well, as they appear to have been talking a normal approach. Wonder if it decided to land itself short of the runway? Air India grounded all of theirs in the 90's for that very reason. An engine fire is possible. They weren't out of fuel (big post-crash fire) but that doesn't mean it was being delivered to the engines nor that one or both of them failed.
