When I was a kid I remember going to Grissom AFB in Indiana (it was
called something else then, Bunker Hill I think) to an open house day,
and getting to sit in the cockpit of one of these. I had built a
plastic model of it, and thought it was soo cool. These things
were so over the top. I understand that all the avionics generated so
much heat (vacuum tubes), and took up so much space, that it was
necessary to put all of it in an external pod that hung below the
plane, and sorta negated a lot of the performance attributes it was
designed for. I think it was the first Coke-bottle design for
supersonic flight but the pod kinda killed that. Not sure where The

though and kept Merka great and out of the hands of the filthy reds!

I stand corrected... Tungsten , not Titanium is the material of choice..
Apparently my updated Typo 18.3 did not engage the Old fart forgets to
check, 8.4 feature.

Now, where did I put the app for that... it's laying around here
somewhere.. ;))

In any case, the lawn dart weapon from hell could / can apparently deliver
incredible amounts of energy to a very localized impact zone without
leaving nuke nasty. Seems it would be the weapon of choice for total fear
and intimidation.

Unfortunately, it is no where as sexy as the B-58. There is a prime
example of one setting at Pima Air Museum in Tucson, which is just across
from Davis Mothan where airplanes go to die. If you have or can make the
opportunity to go to that museum you should plan for at least two days and
comfortable shoes for an aviation orgy.

Re: [MBZ] it's off topic, but i'd like to point out

2013-10-29 Thread Jim Cathey

I have a 1999-vintage G4 tower

Those have a pretty low power draw, something like 20W.
(Assuming you didn't hot it up too much.) They'd be a
fairly decent media server, assuming they'd be up to
the task. Our dual and quad G5's are 10-20x the power
draw, leave them on and you'd see it in your power bill.

Lack of space and need, though, I gave our G4 tower away.
We'd never deployed it for anything, it was a gift from
a neighbor that bought a pallet load of PC's that came
from a school district. Got the monitor I'm using on
this dual G5 in the same batch. (Jill's 30 cinema
display was _not_ free, however!)

The G3 beige is on 24x7, and runs 10.2.8, upon which I
use Apple Mail, and master my web site. I did all the
Illustrator schematics I have on it, too. I finally
got to stop going downstairs to read email when I
figured out that Vines was the only way to do remote
screen work. Once that was up and running I got to
stay upstairs and run the Beige from either my Pismo,
or this G5D that's networked _through_ another Pismo's
airport. This G5D is the only non–laptop we have that's
not using a hardwire ethernet link. The G5's are the
only things that surf well, though, except for selected
sites like Craigslist where the Pismo is happy. I had
to give up surfing on the Beige years ago, though at
first it worked just fine. Javascript cured that.

I have a G5 dual because it turned out there was no way
to effectively use the 30 display on it. I had to buy
another (quad) in order to get a high-enough capacity
video card. So I put the dual in service for myself.
Oops. I use it to surf, and to offload the camera's
pictures.

[MBZ] OT computers

2013-10-29 Thread Randy Bennell

Computers are getting smarter and that is a good thing.

Yesterday morning, I came into my office and when my monitor lit up,
there was a box in the middle of the screen telling me that Microsoft
Windows thought my hard drive was failing and suggested I take immediate
steps to secure my data.
I called my computer guy who happened to be close by. He popped in and
confirmed that the message was legitimate and not some type of scam.
He took the CPU away at about 11:30 AM and was back with it by about 2
PM with a new hard drive installed and the whole thing copied such that
I lost no data at all.

Sure beats the past times when hard drives gave up without warning.
I have online backup of data nightly but cloning the drive is not
something I was prepared for so I am happy that it worked out the way it
did.

They'd also kind of painted themselves into a corner, I forget what 10.1 was

10.3 = Panther
10.4 = Tiger
10.5 = Leopard
10.6 = Snow Leopard - possibly named because 10.5 sucked?
10.7 = Lion
10.8 = Mountain Lion

Honestly I think everything after 10.6 is a let down. 10.8 especially just
dumbifies an already dumbed down OS. I hate how they hide stuff. In fact I'm
starting to think my Retina Macbook Pro was a mistake, everything about it is a
pain in the ass, no optical drive, no firewire, stupid external monitor port
nobody else uses. No replaceable battery (or at least they don't want you to
replace it). It can't run Linux off a key drive so there goes my backup plan if
the internal drive takes a dump (saved me more than once on the road).

A student in class last week put 10.9 on and immediately lost his Win8 bootcamp
partition. The data was still there but the OS wouldn't boot any longer.
Typical Apple BS if you ask me. When I worked for Pinnacle they wrote our card
out of 10.3.6, just made it invisible not even unknown device in the Apple
system profiler. When Apple wants to mess with you they mess with you.

 hi all!

high winds in our area last night had lots of stuff flying around
on the highway, and i happened to pick up a piece of something that
destroyed parts of the grille of our '85 300D. it looks like the
majority of the damage was restricted to the grey plastic grille that
sits inside of the main outer frame surround, and perhaps a few more
dings in the chrome decorative strips. i couldn't find any MBZ logos or
P/Ns of any kind on it, and have my suspicions that this might be an
aftermarket piece put on by a previous owner after a 'fender-bender'.

any hints or tips on where and how to get a replacement for a car
that doesn't have to be show quality, but is a good regular driver that
we're keeping looking fairly nice? should i just bite down and replace
 the whole grille and frame?

 cheers!

Hands down sexiest jet airplane ever built was the SR71, in my book.

Only 36 ever built. Designed and produced in record time without computers
or any of the fancy stuff we have today.. Nothing to date matches it for
speed [and that is still classified ] or altitude [also still classified].

Until the era of successful space high resolution information gathering..
it ruled. It was the ultimate game changer during the cold war..

At $1,000,000 per flight hour [reported, not confirmed] it was however a
tad expensive to operate..

[MBZ] 1985 300D 120,000 miles, strong clean engine.

2013-10-29 Thread Mike Esh

I have been driving my new car for several days now and I am very happy with the performance. A couple of questions:

The kick down switch located beneath the throttle pedal is sticking
occasionally and I have to hit it pretty hard for it to switch off and go back
into 4th gear. Is this switch easy to remove and would a shot electrical
contact cleaner be likely to resolve the issue?
When accelerating from a stop the car is very slow and then the it feels
like the turbo kicks in and it is very fast. It is not a comfortable feeling.
I like the fast part but not the lag I get from takeoff. Is there an
adjustment of several things or maybe just one thing? I am hoping just one
thing.

Thanks,
Mike

A new kickdown switch is cheap and takes about 5min to change out.

Have you changed your fuel filters? That can result in accel lag. Also
the tube from the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA that adjusts
for boost. Takes a minute to undo it and make sure it all clean in the
manifold and the hose.

The switch is in there with two tabs you have to squeeze to get it out.
I finally got it out easily after fooling with it, but I can't really
explain how. A coupla little flat screwdrivers and one bigger to pry a
bit is the key.

I think a new one was like $30 which is not a lot but enough for a
switch. I think I looked at the old one and it can probably be taken
apart but the risk of buggering it would probably be high. Keep the old
one for a spare then if you need to do that, you have it.

Try inviting mercedes@okiebenz.com and see what happens?

I agree with the SR-71 being the most sexy aircraft, and thing the F104 is
the second (not to fly, jsut to look at). P51 would be third, and P38
fourth.

That won't work. Put the file in your DB public folder, then right
click on the file and click Copy public link and give us the link.

Re: [MBZ] This kind of rare?

2013-10-29 Thread OK Don
I'm guessing it's a Euro impart with DOT headlights. Giveaways are the
manual A/C heat controls accompanied by the battery under the hood. In '79,
the US models had the ACC II (Chrysler servo) with the battery in the
trunk.

The 500SLC that you are thinking of had the first version of the aluminum
block M117 engine, aluminum hood and trunk lid, rally suspension, etc., and
was built to race, with enough sold to the public to satisfy the rules.
Yes, those are rare today.

*From Wikipedia -*

From July 1974 both SL and SLC could also be ordered with a fuel-injected
2.8L straight-6 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-6 as 280 SL and
SLC. US models sold from 1976 through 1979 used the Bosch K Jetronic
system, an entirely mechanical fuel injection system. All US models used
the 4.5 liter engine, and were called 450 SL/SLC.

In September 1977 the 450 SLC 5.0 joined the line. This was a special
version of the big coupé, featuring a new all-aluminum five-liter V8,
aluminum alloy hood and trunk lid, and a black rubber rear spoiler.

Starting in 1980, US cars were equipped with lambda control, which varied
the air/fuel mixture based on feedback from an oxygen sensor. The 350, 450
and 450 SLC 5.0 models (like the 350 and 450 SL) were discontinued in 1980
with the introduction of the 380 and 500 SLC in March 1980. At the same
time, the cars received a very mild makeover; the 3-speed
automatichttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmissionwas
replaced by a four-speed unit.
The 280, 380 and 500 SLC were discontinued in 1981 with the introduction of
the W126 series 380 and 500 SEC coupes. A total of 62,888 SLCs had been
manufactured over a ten-year period of which just 1,636 were the 450
SLC-5.0 and 1,133 were the 500 SLC. Both these models are sought by
collectors today. With the exception of the SL65 AMG Black Series, the SLC
remains the only fixed roof Mercedes-Benz coupe based on a roadster rather
than a sedan.
