[MBZ] What a day...
So the Jetta has passed 250,000 miles and although I wanted to change the oil at 250,000 miles I didn't get around to it. Yesterday I had some time and got to changing it. The Jetta is a bit of a PITA for this, you can't pull it up through the dipstick like on a MB and the car is so low I can't get under it. So I jacked it up, and drained the oil but then discovered (remembered really) that I can't get the oil filter out from the top. There is a special place in hell for the asshole that worked out the positioning for this filter. Its HUGE, like an MB filter but in a metal can on the side of the engine, facing the radiator with very little space. So I had to drop the belly pan which is 4 bolts, two behind the engine and one in each wheel well. Of course this had to wait for the oil draining to be complete so I didn't get oil all over. That was a waste of time though, I've had a small ongoing oil leak and the belly pan was full of oil soaked dirt. With the belly pan down I found I could NOT remove the oil filter. Usually they just hand tight but this one resisted all efforts. Remember theres not much space either. I even tried a chisel and hammer. So I needed a filter wrench. The 190D (MB content) had gotten very loud again one day after repairing the exhaust pipe so I finally broke down and bought a replacement. Of course the Jetta is now right square in the driveway so I sneaked the 190D in as close next to it as I could and still get between them, to remove the pipe the car has to be jacked up and we've only got so much paved driveway. If I'd known I'd go through this I could have shifted the Jetta to one side, the paved part of our drive way is just barely 2 cars wide. Anyway got the old pipe out from under the 190D, it'd split badly just past where I'd repaired. I also found that the new pipe had what I thought was the wrong flange where it meets the next pipe. It was wrong until I hit the old one with a hammer and the coupler came out :) . Putting the pipe in was an easy job, the biggest part was burning all the shipping stickers off with a torch. I tried to cut them but some asshat at WorldPak had covered almost the whole pipe with stickers, tape and plastic. The torch and a scraper worked best though the car still looked like it was on fire for a bit as I rode to Autozone to get an oil filter wrench. Even with the wrench that blasted oil filter was VERY hard to get off. My trusted VW guru will get a piece of my mind on that one. I nearly bought one of the cup type wrenches but wasn't sure it would fit the Mann filter which has grooves instead of flats and wasn't sure it could sneak into the little space provided, as it was the strap type wrench had a hard time. In the end I got the wrench on and turned it with a long screwdriver... Finally while cleaning up I think I finally found the oil leak. Last winter an oil line to the turbo failed. In replacing it my VW guru mentioned that the port off of the oil filter was a bit buggered but fortunately there are 3 and only 2 are used so he switched to another port and put a plug in the bad one. I noticed oil welling up around the plug. I gave the plug 1/8th turn and the oil quit. I'll move that to watch status... All in all a simple oil change took just over 4 hours... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] What a day...
Mine is a '98 Jetta TDI. Its an A3 body which got the TDI only in '98 and '99 until '99.5 which started the A4. I like the A3, its a little tinnier than an A4 but its easier to work on. It requires a timing belt at 60,000 as opposed to 100,000 in the A4 and later but it costs HALF as much to do and a failed water pump doesn't take out the timing belt. Consider also the B4 Passat which is the same basic time period. Angie wants a TDI also so I've got an eye out for another A3, a B4 or a B5.5 Passat which actually has the engine turned sideways (or normal ways if you prefer) so a timing belt job requires taking the whole front of the car off. Actually for Angie's needs I'd probably be better off to get an A4 with a 2.0l gas engine, she really doesn't need a diesel. Lately I've gotten kind of tired of my '84 190D which needs body work, started to consider a newer 190E. Oooh the dark side. Strangely not much for sale lately. -Curt From: arche...@embarqmail.com arche...@embarqmail.com To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, August 1, 2014 12:13 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] What a day... If you took that car to a JiffyLube you'd deserve the ruined engine you'd get. TDIs MUST have APPROPRIATE synthetic oil. I've never been to a skippylube that has 5w40 synthetic and the car will NOT tolerate anything-w30. Interestingly it appears that the people that buy these are generally skinflints. The TDI forums are just loaded with people who try to buy a car, do no maintenance or just the absolutely minimum in maintenance with cheap Chinese parts and then are shocked when the car fails. I thought these were reliable. There are also a bunch of folks like me that buy them cheap from the idiots, do their own work and have good results. This dovetails exactly with the things I heard and saw when I was looking a VWs a few years ago. I believe there was a gas engine they had in the Jettas that was VERY sensitive to the type and viscosity of oil use, and if this was ignored would cause the engine to grenade prematurely. [MBZ] Trouble comes in bunches
The first trouble was shifter bushings in the '83 300D which were fixed thanks to Gary. The second was a dead and completely shorted out battery that would not take a charge. Since I didn't want to switch the battery out of the '83 240D, I installed a little 240 cca garden tractor battery to see if it would start the 300D since the car starts very easily. It only grunted when I tried to start it, but then I remembered the 40 amps the pre-heater draws. I preheated until the dome light brightened and then hit the starter. Success! Drove down to A-zone, and between smirks about my big battery, A-zone installed a new group 49 battery at no charge. That evening I headed to town and about 5 miles from home 300D choked down to idle rpm. Installed primary filter. No help. Installed secondary filter. No help. Thought about idling home with flashers on, but it being Friday night, was sure someone going home from a bar would rear-end me, and it would be my fault. TripleA hauled me home. Rigged up a bottle of diesel under the hood to isolate the problem. Engine still ran only at idle speed. Tank was nearly full and fuel was flowing freely out of both tank lines, so it was pretty certain the tank filter was not the problem. Then, with visions of something being haywire in the IP, I took apart the air filter assembly; thinking that I might have bollixed something up recently when I installed new rubber supports for the air cleaner. To go back a year or two, I had installed gaskets made of small motorcycle innertube on the inlet to the turbo since the U-shaped duct was not obtainable for a reasonable price anywhere and mine would not come close to tightening up using a stainless steel clamp. When the U-shaped duct was taken off, a piece of the inner fell out, and when I looked inside the turbo, there was a larger piece up against the turbine blades and almost completely blocking the inlet. Easily pulled that out along with a small piece that was wedged between the turbo blade and the housing. Put everything back together, and with fingers crossed in case rubber had blown into the engine or the turbine blades had been damaged, drove it around the neighborhood at high rpm. No problems! It's been working well ever since. Note: Put a new better quality clamp on the U-shaped duct and tightened it with a socket and wrench instead of a screwdriver. It tightened right up! No more DIY gaskets necessary. [MBZ] Call for a Part
Here's the deal: On many of the 1990 and later models, for sure the R129 and W140, there are small white links or rods used in the exterior rear view mirrors. These links or rods connect from a bracket on the back of the mirror to the motor in the 9:00 o'clock and 3:00 o'clock positions, and are the means by which the mirror is moved from side to side. Because they are fairly small and delicate, they are often broken when servicing the mirrors and are so weak that one can even break them by manually moving the mirrors. If they break, the mirror will still move up and down but not side to side. These links are not sold as separate parts, meaning that if they are broken the whole mirror motor assembly must be replaced. I want to try and find a couple of these links that are intact so that I can duplicate them. This is an ideal opportunity for a 3-D printer. If you have any of these or might be able to grab a couple or a complete mirror assembly they can be liberated from, please let me know. I know some of you frequent the pick and pulls in your areas, and this would be the perfect place to find some of these. They run off Clearwire's network, which is to say Sprint's WiMax, with a few (expensive) exceptions. They are currently clearing inventory since WiMax is closing down. 3G is a monthly access charge unless you are on the phone beta, 4G (LTE or WiMax) is free for the first 500/900MB. I agree their web site is terrible, and they make their money on folks forgetting to cancel their plans. Ultimately you can't get enough data to use as an ISP (in my opinion, anyway); if you need an ISP Clearwire is the better choice. I live in what should be (by the map) a really good area for WiMax, and it is acceptable - but I probably wouldn't want it as my ISP. That said, it is nice to be able to flip on my FreedomPop Photon and be able to use a few 100MB when I'm out and about. The kids can play Minecraft over the local network in the car on long trips, I can download some MP3s or stream Pandora if the radio selection is poor. It works fine where Sprint had good WiMax coverage, which is most of NC's interstates, anyway. I also have my car phone (the one that displays my Torque data) on FreedomPop, that's a new addition. It basically lets me have some data. Honestly the phone part hasn't worked well, but the data is nice. That phone has LTE access. If they break, the mirror will still move up and down but not side to side. That must be what's wrong with our '95 E320's right mirror. Kaleb is supposed to be sourcing the parts to fix it. These links are not sold as separate parts, meaning that if they are broken the whole mirror motor assembly must be replaced. Not good. I want to try and find a couple of these links that are intact so that ( ^ to, not and ) I can duplicate them. This is an ideal opportunity for a 3-D printer. Very good! Excellent idea! If you have any of these or might be able to grab a couple or a complete mirror assembly they can be liberated from, please let me know. Sorry, I can't help with that. [MBZ] OT - electric vehicle
This sounds too good to be true ??? *An electric car, but where are the batteries?* The Quant e-Sportlimousine uses so-called “flow-cell” technology with two tanks filled with different liquid electrolytes to store energy. The liquid passes through a membrane in between the two tanks, creating an electric charge. The e-Sportlimousine emits no particulate or noxious emissions, has a claimed top speed of about 217mph and would accelerate from zero to 62mph in a Nissan GT-R Nismo-like http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20131224-sports-car-of-2013-gt-r-nismo 2.8 seconds. Nanoflowcell, its Germany-based builder, says the technology offers five times the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries of the same weight, has no moving parts and contains no harmful substances. The car can travel 372 miles on a single charge and just earned a road-worthy approval on European roads. http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20140801-the-217mph-electric-lab -- OK Don NSA: The only branch of government that actually listens to US citizens!
