Re: [MBZ] heat
I drove through Phoenix in 1980 at night -- 98 F and 60% RH, a real sweatbox. In the old days, before urbanization, Phoenix was dry. Not any more. Flagstaff is still dry, I think. It was when I was there. Probably not so much this summer with all the rain. A friend of mine has his first vegetable garden this year and wanted to know how to make sun-dried tomatoes -- I told him he needed to move to Arizona. The heat and dry air (outside urban areas, anyway) will dehydrate things like peppers and tomatoes in a day or two. Here they will rot instead. We are in that time of year where the RH goes over 100% at night, patchy to dense fogs and the grass is soaking wet until noon so I can't mow when it's cool out. Folding-fin rockets are notoriously inaccurate. Unless all fins deploy at precisely the same time (yeah, right) the non-symmetrical initial fin configuration will steer the rocket off course. Definitely the wrong weapon for this job but I guess that's what was available on no-notice. All target aircraft I worked with (1970s and later) had some type of flight termination system, some of these activated automatically if the command signal was lost for a sufficient period of time. When the Japanese attacked Hawaii, almost all civilian damage on the ground was caused by friendly anti-aircraft shells. The older 20mm high explosive bullets armed as they spun from rifling going as they went down the barrel, and stayed armed. The newer 20mm HE stuff is only armed while it is still spinning. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley via Mercedes Sent: Sunday, August 16, 2015 9:57 AM To: Mercedes List mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Mitch Haley mi...@mitchellhaley.com Subject: [MBZ] The Battle of Palmdale On August 16, 1956 Air Force fighters attacked a runaway Hellcat over southern California and missed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Palmdale http://www.scvhistory.com/scvhistory/pollack0115battleofpalmdale.htm http://articles.latimes.com/2005/sep/11/local/me-then11 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The Zeniths were a pleasure to work with compared to the Solex 4A1. It is a nightmare of a carburetor, guaranteed to run poorly even when working at it’s best, and offering really lousy fuel economy. The M130 in the former W123 LWB had one. I tore it off and did a Holley 5200 conversion. Made the car a real pleasure to drive and I could even get mileage numbers in the high teens with it. Re: [MBZ] Why are crappy undesirable cars always in great shape
A Holley of any sort would be an improvement. My buddy Hans had to deal with them all the time in Germany, said they were horrible, even the factory tech couldn't get them right. The M110 wasn't bad itself, other than being rather fuel hungry and terribly noisy due to solid lifters. More fiddly that the other single overhead cam Benz engines, but robust. Not a bad engine with fuel injection (either D-Jet or K-jet, depending on year). Terrible mileage in all applications, though, mainly due to the really low rear ends (atypically 4.00:1 for gassers). The M110 spins silly fast, but gearing it for 6600 rpm at 125 mph results in horrible fuel consumption. Low teens is typical with the carb, mid teens with FI. Intake manifold and associated FI parts. I'd not bother with the D- Jet, impossible to find parts by now and that one requires the correct distributor, probably like finding hen's teeth forty years after they stopped production. [MBZ] OT: Concrete paint?
I had a slab poured a year ago before erecting a shed. Do I need to paint the concrete floor now? Re: [MBZ] OT: Concrete paint?
Yes, it would disrupt the ecological cycle of mold growth in the carpet to close off it's water supply by sealing the concrete. Pretty sure that's how it happens in the humid NorthEast... ;)) 118°F here today.. moisture is not a problem.. I think all current fighters have both guns and missiles? I know the F/A-18 has both. F-4 Phantom was another missiles only fighter, and I think engagements in Mig alley convinced fighter designers that missiles are nice, but guns are required. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On August 17, 2015 12:22:54 AM EDT, Mitch Haley via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: On August 16, 2015 at 2:47 PM Dan Penoff via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Sounds like the drones were abut as reliable as the rockets they attempted to shoot it down with… Imagine if it were a manned, armed MiG taking evasive action on its way to attack something important.
