+1 They are the only classic caliber cars for the 80s and 90s. The basic W124 is plain, even with the souped up 5 liter, it was nothing special. Put a ragtop on, and you get big interest. The R129 is sort of boring and not sought after in the manner of a 220S cab or 600 pullman. Those are far too expensive to acquire, where the 300 cab can be had for small investment. Re: [MBZ] Tires
I was driving back home from Chapel Liberhill on Saturday, there was a tree truck towing a big chipper about 100yd in front of me. I hear a loud explosion then tire bits go flying about 20ft into the air, then the remainder of the tire starts smoking, then all that flew off, then the fender comes flying off and lands up in front of me, then the rim is throwing sparks and flames. I was going to go around it but there was a fair amount of traffic in the left lane coming up behind me so I slowed way down and the truck pulled over and I got around it. I ran over one bit of tread, and one that went flying sorta went on by me, and I missed the fender that ended up in the road too. It was an enlivening event on an otherwise boring drive. I'm guessing that was a high-pressure tire, it made a good noise when it let go. --R On 11/30/15 11:28 AM, archer75--- via Mercedes wrote: Thanks; makes sense. Re: [MBZ] OT Mac network troubles
Searching the webernets it looks like the problem I am having is not an uncommon problem with macs and the ATT Uverse modem I have (Pace 5031NV). I have seen a couple of suggestions to change the authentication but that didn't work for me. Seems like some sort of incompatibility of the modem and (some) apple stuff for reasons not clear. The solution ended being that I logged into the ATT UVerse modem (https://192.168.1.254) and changed the wireless Authentication Type from "WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA2-PSK (AES)" to just "WPA2-PSK (AES)". Once I did that, the MacBook Pro was able to connect fine. No idea if it's that generation's Airport or something in OS X 10.6.8 or what, but that fixed it. I am wondering if I upgrade the OS to El Capitan (I have 10.10.5 now, is that new one 10.11?) if there might be some updates in the OS that might work better. There is a security update to this version too, I suppose I should load that. This has become a fairly recent problem too, no idea why. --R On 11/29/15 11:32 PM, Max Dillon via Mercedes wrote: Try changing the router radio channel, the Mac may like a different frequency? Re: [MBZ] Calculators
My Dad had one of the first TI digital calculators. I had it up until a few years ago, I suspect it got discarded in a move. It was white plastic with the little red pixelated LED digits that had a bubble shaped lens over them to make the digits readable. It was the size of a small brick and weighed about as much. It did basic arithmetic operations and nothing else. I just remember him talking about how expensive it was. This would have been in the early 1970s, I think. Dan I remember well how expensive they were. The HP trig calculator we were expected to buy for college cost more than a whole year of college. I did not have the funds to buy the calculator. before I graduated, ( about 4-5 yrs later) I bought a TI-30 that did all the same engineering/Trig functions for $30. Getting caught in the transition from slide rules to calculators cost me 3 yrs. I shoulda spent that time in the USAF. Instead, I spent it barely hanging on with $2/hr jobs. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

(oversteer is unstable) Either way, if you suddenly lose air in a left tire on a cloverleaf, you're probably going off road. Just depends on whether you want to look out the windshield or the back window to see what you're going to hit. I once watched a woman lose a front wheel at freeway speeds. I was going to pull up beside her and try to tell her the wheel was wobbling but she outran me, speed limit 55, I was doing 65 and she left me in her dust, then the wheel came off within a mile. She kept it in a straight line. Every time the brake lights came on there was a shower of sparks from the brake disk on the concrete. I'm thinking she would have had a scary case of oversteer if she was driving that fast with a missing rear wheel. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com - No virus found in this message. So true story. A buddy of mine worked for Wang Labs back when, after college and some other job. He was in some sort of technical marketing job. So someone decides they need a marketing campaign to go head-head with IBM for some sort of computers or the word processors or something. This would have been late 70s I guess. They have 3 marketing companies come in to pitch their ideas. Dr. Wang sits in on the meetings. One of them has this youngish woman doing the pitch, a serious marketing babe. She gets up there and goes through various ideas, then comes to one that is the crux of their plan: "Wang -- the Chink in IBM's Armor" with some graphic or something illustrating that concept. Room goes silent. People looking at the floor and the ceiling, deadly quiet. She is standing there wondering WTF just happened. After a minute or so Dr. Wang says in his very soft voice, "Thank you for your presentation. I don't think this will work out." He gets up and walks out. So the girl collects her stuff and leaves, still not sure what happened. Rest of staff are mortified, figuring they will get reamed for even having this pres, but nothing more is ever said about it. Along about then I met Courtney Wang, Dr. Wang's rather dissolute son, who was a good friend/classmate of a friend. He was a pompous ass, Dr. Wang put him in charge of something, and apparently he pretty much ran the company into the ground as time went on. IIRC the plugs can be tested easily from the relay contacts. I vaguely recall that there is also a simple test for the relay? I had good success with only replacing plugs that tested bad. The effort of replacing plugs is per plug, so no real advantage to doing all at once. IME other plugs do not necessarily fail very soon after the bad ones. The light is controlled by the relay. It can signal two things. Normally it comes on and then extinguishes after the relay thinks the pre-glow plugs have gotten hot enough (the relay maintains power to the plugs until it reaches the safety time-out). The relay also use the light to signal the operator when the system requires service, which is what it is telling you now by not coming on when the relay energizes the plugs. You could measure the resistance of the plugs (normally 0.7 ohms) or measure current flow to the plugs to test them, or just replace them all and see if that clears the problem. Work! If you have money to burn, replace the relay, but that is the second least likely component to fail (the least likely failure is the dash light). -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

He came over after the call and filled me in. He also told me in no uncertain terms to call 911 and let them know if hubby came around. So about an hour later, a car rolls up to their house with hubby and two AA females, one skinny, one quite rotund. The large one runs up to the front door and begins beating on it as hard as she can, while screaming obscenities at the top of her lungs. I’m already on the phone to 911 to let them know what’s up. Which reminds me, my uncle Fred (really my great uncle) died a couple months ago and things have gotten decidedly weird. Fred was married to my aunt Trudy, who is my grandmother's sister. Trudy was married once before, her daughter Melanie being the surviving child from that. There are two surviving sons from Fred, Tim and Phil.Phil is executor of the will and is having a tough time of it. My dad was executor of uncle Reg's will, he was Trudy and my grandmother's brother, so dad is helping Phil out. Theres a fair amount of money involved, low 6 figures and a house on a lake which is probably worth something in the mid to low 6 figures. Trudy has alzheimer's and is a total space cadet in a nursing home that apparently costs around $8,000 a month which will probably eat a sizable chunk of the money. Apparently Melanie has gone money crazy and has started threatening Phil and strangely, my dad. In talking to the police dad has discovered this is something lowlife idiots do to each other all the time. They threaten to "send the police to your house!" and since the other low life idiots have something they'd prefer the police didn't see they are cowed. Dad found out that a cease and desist order costs $20 and gets delivered by the police so Melanie and her idiot husband got a visit from Johnny law that they didn't expect. It'll get more interesting before its all over I'm sure... I'm convinced the best thing that could happen to Phil is that his mother would live for years and years and use up all the money. Sadly Tim is a bit of a slouch and could actually use the money for good reasons like the roof over his head and food in his belly. -Curt Welcome to the real world of low lifes where one family member will kill another for $1000 (more or less) Then there is the Kollyfonia sister syndrome. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] W123 glow circuit
Third! Glow plugs, GP Fuse 50 amp for 4 cyl, 80 amp for 6 cyl GP Relay When 2 GPs are out, the light won't light. You have out #1 GP and another , at least. That said, i've had GP Relays fail.
Re: [MBZ] New Neighbors - was OT Mac network troubles
Speaking of new neighbors, the couple who bought the house two doors down just had a major domestic dispute on Friday night. Seems that he beat her to a pulp and left, then on Saturday morning started calling her saying he was coming back to do it again. That explained the multiple gendarmes outside the house first thing Saturday morning. Fortunately, one of them is the son in law of our family attorney and former neighbor. The operator says the sheriff is close by on rolling. This goes on for a good 3-4 minutes while hubby stands by the car in the street. Large AA woman is apparently somehow related to hubby from what I can tell. Sheriffs roll up. Within a few minutes, hubby is in the back of the cruiser and Large AA woman is yelling at the cops. Not a good idea, they tell her, unless she wants to spend the weekend lounging at Che Jail on the taxpayer’s expense. She quiets down. Two cops and both women enter the house and come out a few minutes later. Cops leave, women leave. A Uhaul truck shows up a few hours later along with 3-4 carloads of people, By Sunday morning the UHaul is full, and later that day it rolls with a line of cars behind it. I neglected to mention that Fred had adopted her and she does stand to get something like a 5th of the estate. At one point she had a huge blowout fight with Fred while he was in the nursing home shortly before he died and he wrote her out of the will entirely. Sadly they "reconciled" which is to say she put on a good face long enough to get back into his good graces and the will. She's an idiot of the highest order. She's had who knows how many kids by at least 4 husbands. The oldest son (a year older than me) recently committed suicide. Daughter has who knows how many kids which have been taken away by the state (but "she's a good mother" says my grandmother), next oldest son is in jail basically forever on multiple rape convictions. Fred was a great man, its sad that his kids and grandkids have turned out pretty poor. Tim and Phil are the best of the bunch but Phil still can't own a firearm other than a muzzleloader due to a drug charge in his early 20s. He's an excellent woodworker when he can keep himself working. Just pull the plug to the plugs, put meter on ohms, put one end in the plug, other end to the engine or some other ground. Should be something around .8 ohms IIRC, if it reads open its bad if it reads a high number like over about 1.5 its bad. Do this for each contact on the relay end of the glow plug harness. On 11/30/2015 5:39 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes wrote: IIRC the plugs can be tested easily from the relay contacts. I vaguely recall that there is also a simple test for the relay? Re: [MBZ] Family fun - was: New Neighbors
Sounds like wife’s stepsister and husband. His mom had money and property, and believe it or not, we would often hear stepsister and husband talk openly about how when mom dies they would be living in luxury. Every time mom was ill or feeling poorly they would be rubbing their collective hands together, figuring out what they would be spending their undeserved gains on. Mom lived to be nearly 100 and just passed last year. She did a good job of running down her accounts before she left this world, so there was little cash and it had to be split between three siblings, one of which is the stepsister’s husband. She also left three rental properties, one of which one of the sisters has lived in and now gets to in perpetuity. The others have long term renters, but this is in Anderson, IN, which is the poster child for dead Rust Belt towns, so the property has minimal value at best. The best part? Stepsister and husband lived their lives in anticipation of big bucks that they’ll never see. So they continue alone, mired in debt. Both are retirement age but can’t retire because they can’t afford to. As I like to say, Karma can be a cruel mistress. Re: [MBZ] Family fun - was: New Neighbors
-Curt From: Dan Penoff via MercedesTo: Mercedes List Cc: Dan Penoff Sent: Monday, November 30, 2015 5:33 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] New Neighbors - was OT Mac network troubles Speaking of new neighbors, the couple who bought the house two doors down just had a major domestic dispute on Friday night. This is why I strongly recommend an interest only trust for real estate, and it can be used to handle money too by having "transfer on death" arrangements. This way only the recipient of the trust has mitts on the dough until it can be distributed, real estate doesn't get tied up in court until the house rots away, etc. The actual transfer of property is sort of complicated, but for tax purposes is immediate upon arranging the trust -- this way the nursing home doesn't get the house and other property. At any rate, the perception that there are piles of cash needing a home sure brings out the best in people, eh? (understeer is a stable condition) Loss of traction in the rear makes it hard to keep the car pointed where you're going. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

It was white plastic with the little red pixelated LED digits that had a bubble shaped lens over them to make the digits readable. It was the size of a small brick and weighed about as much. There is a dark blue 94 W124 convertible that's parked on the street by my office all the time. Looks like it's in good shape from a casual glance. I think this one is about a $750 car, if it were a sedan. The clearcoat is coming off badly on most of the horizontal surfaces, missing wheel center and as Mitch pointed out the missing antenna all point to a car that has been driven into the ground. Another issue is the trashed passenger seat bottom, yet the driver's side looks OK, maybe someone has swapped them? - Max Charleston SC On Mon, Nov 30, 2015 at 6:59 AM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > > Usual caveat about cheap Mercedes applies. > The hole in the quarter panel where the antenna belongs implies that it > has been > suffering under present ownership. > Emerald Green is nice, but I wish the interior were saddle, or something > with > some color/character. > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

It's not Doktor Booth's M1 anymore, see Curly's post from last month or so. Group III base stock, not really true synthetic, but they are still charging you the full price. Re: [MBZ] Maybe this convertible?
Search the BenzWorld W124 forum would be my first suggestion. If the hydraulics are shot you're going to drop $600 or so for a complete rebuild plus the labor, maybe a day or two if you do it. I've done the R129 which has 11 cylinders, and it took the better part of two days to R Klaus is the top hydraulics rebuild God, and is really helpful. I emailed him with a question when I was doing mine, and he emailed me back several times after answering to be sure everything was good and to see if I had additional questions. I know nothing of the W124 top system, but since it's the same vintage as the R129 it's probably the same or similar to it. Pretty simple, a controller, hydraulic pump, solenoids and lines.
