An na 606 w124 would be hard to beat for a young guy. Nobody under 40
should drive an m119. Fun motor but far too fast and inefficient for
college or whatever.

You can chirp tires from a start. #1 boy was able to spin it 180* from a
dead stop into a telephone pole within its own wheel base. IT does not
perform like an e500, but does as well as the other 3 liters. There is no
need to mash the pedal, there is lots of left over power to overtake other
cars on steep mountain passes. There was one issue with EGR going wonky
after cresting Lincoln Pass on I-80, but the SLC dealer made it all good
again.

Buy high quality ones, not the kind you get at the home centers, and use a belt
dresser (rubber block) to clear the abrasive frequently.

And yes, the heat will cause the adhesive to fail, but a lot also has to do
with the amount of stress on the belt. In other words, don’t apply pressure or
push down on the sander - the abrasive should do the work with you doing
nothing more than guiding the sander. Applying pressure in an attempt to
remove more material will cause the belt to fail prematurely.

Keystone is a good supplier. I found that the friability of their abrasives
were probably the best that I used relative to hardwoods. If you’re sanding
metals you want low friability so the material won’t break down rapidly.

just come apart. The butt joint with about 1/2" of tape just doesn't

I’m toying with the idea of replacing the S420 with a W124 diesel for the
youngest boy. Far more economical, relatively robust, better appointed than a
W126 diesel, which I am finding are darned near impossible to find in decent
condition for a reasonable price.

I’ve got a line on a nice 1995 W124 E300 with 175k, dealer maintained, special
edition, everything works, etc. about a day’s drive away. It has some minor
damage in the right front quarter, but nothing a new bumper strip and a tug or
two on the bottom edge of the fender where it meets the bumper and it would be
good as new.

I want to be able to send the youngster off when he graduates in December with
a solid car that won’t drain his bank account for maintenance, repairs and
operating expenses. The W124 diesels seem to fit this requirement pretty well,
and there are still enough of them out there that prices aren’t bad for nice
examples. Sure, he won’t have the performance of the M119, but he also won’t
be spending a small fortune putting gas in the thing. And he’s gain the
reliability and economy of a diesel, too.

We’ll see as I know more.

Thanks to all for the insight, as I know the W124 well but not the diesel

So for those who have owned/driven this model, I'm curious as to your
impression of their performance since they're not turbocharged.

Are they doggy in comparison to the turbo version? Do you have to drive them
with your foot into the pedal?

I love the performance of the OM603 in my W126. It's close to a vergasser in
performance, I think.

Re: [MBZ] AC Leak

2016-11-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Replaced a bunch of O-rings yesterday, everything I could get to without a
major undertaking. Still leaked down to around 20"-25” Hg after 30-45 minutes.

I replaced the receiver dryer, charged the system with R134a and used the
Cliplight sealer that saved the 500 evaporator. 24 hours later it’s still
making ice cubes. I’ll continue to watch it to see if it leaks down, but
previously it would be dead by now so I guess I had a leak somewhere and the
compressor shaft seal is intact.

I went back and looked in my purchase inspection notes and saw that the PO said
it would leak down every season, not completely but enough that it would need a
can of refrigerant to make it cold again, so maybe it’s the leak that he was
experiencing and it just got worse…
