There is a slight downslope toward the pump so the ball should be

If you can I would go ahead and stretch the spring first just to see
if it helps. It takes 10 min. to take the spring cover bolt loose from
the top of the banjo bolt on the engine side of the pump. Hold the
banjo bolt with a 17mm wrench and use a 14mm to loosen the plug, you
don't have to take the whole banjo bolt out, the spring is a very weak
spring so that isn't any problem even after it's stretched. Just don't
drop the little copper sealing ring. (OR THE BALL!)

He said he has the code. He’s powered it up to find that it’s timing out from
failed coding attempts. They’re cumulative, so if someone tried it 4-5 times
it’s got to sit there powered up until the watchdog timer times out. Could
easily be a day if they tried it enough times.

If you can I would go ahead and stretch the spring first just to
see if it helps. It takes 10 min. to take the spring cover bolt
loose from the top of the banjo bolt on the engine side of the
pump. Hold the banjo bolt with a 17mm wrench and use a 14mm to
loosen the plug, you don't have to take the whole banjo bolt out,
the spring is a very weak spring so that isn't any problem even

by the way is what that guy says not to do because it causes problems. I will
always try the MB manual way first because it hasn't caused me any problems
yet. It may cause him problems in his pocketbook but it feels just fine in mine.

One of the things the manual also says is to put a pressure gauge on the line
and pinch the banana hose shut and see if you have at least 1-1.3 bar. If you
don't then you need to rebuild the lift pump. I will have to do that next. BTW
stretching the spring on mine to 25mm did smooth out the idle a bit.

One of the things the manual also says is to put a pressure gauge on the
line and pinch the banana hose shut and see if you have at least 1-1.3
bar. If you don't then you need to rebuild the lift pump. I will have to
do that next. BTW stretching the spring on mine to 25mm did smooth out the
 idle a bit.

The bolt with spring is a whopping $27 list from Mercedes, so I may order one
for my 300D, which has a really rough idle. That is, it shakes at idle big
time, but everything is in order from what I can tell.

Re: [MBZ] My $500 124 cabriolet project is finally home

2017-03-20 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Hi Max,
Sounds like he was ready for that car to be gone from his yard!
Those front bumper covers are pretty easy to replace - basically it's a
plastic cover with hard blocks of styrofoam behind it. I replaced the
front bumper on my '91 shortly after I bought it.

Good luck with your discoveries,
Larry

On 03/20/2017 2:08 PM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes wrote:

Answering a multitude of questions from ya'll, here's the story. I think
I've shared most of this before.

Surfing Craigs list one night last fall, found a local ad for a 1995 E320,
decided to "click on the link" given that an E320 could be sedan, station
wagon, coupe, ???

Nothing in the text said convertible or cabriolet but the pictures plainly
showed this car, a nice looking convertible. Ad had been up for about a
month at that point, apparently very little interest. I think the asking
price had already been reduced from $3200 to $2200. I showed SWMBO, she
was intrigued, said if I could get it for less than $1k she'd approve.

The next day I called the seller - the owner of the tow company - and he
told me everything that was wrong and lowered the price to $1k before I
even started to begin to negotiate. I made no comment on price but made
arrangements to see the car, then called Rich to see if he wanted to tag
along (he did).

We looked at the car shortly after that, the seller told us the whole
story. Apparently the prior owner (let's call him Gary) had left it at a
shop for repair, which (the story goes) was diagnosed as a bad fuel pump.
Gary never authorized the repair, so it sat at the shop, they left a voice
mail or two and then shoved it to the back of their lot, with the driver's
window down for some reason. Gary has died in the meanwhile, never
responded, the car sat, and then the shop went out of business and had to
clear out their lot. They called this tow company to get rid of the car as
abandoned property, tow company owner liked the looks and decided he'd fix
it up for his wife. He went through the process to get the title, sent a
registered letter to the address of the last owner Gary, the daughter of
the now-deceased responded and said she'd take the car. She doesn't show
up within some legally specified time frame, so tow company gets the
title. Daughter gets some notification that the title had been
transferred, calls up the tow co. and curses / threatens / etc to which the
owner said "Pay the storage fee of $30 / day which adds up to several
thousand now, and you can have the car back.". She didn't pay up,
meanwhile owner decided he wasn't interested in fixing it up, put it up for
sale.

Rich and I start looking over the car, and it is ROUGH. Inside all moldy
and full of leaves and water, driver's seat looks like a complete loss.
Ignition cylinder has been smashed back into the dash by someone trying to
steal the car, center console was gently opened up with a pick axe and pry
bar to disengage the transmission lock. Top is not fully seated in the
rear. The trunk lid is dented up a bit. No coolant at all in the cooling
system. No battery, no keys.

I just kept walking around making a list of everything I could find wrong,
meanwhile Rich is chatting the guy up about some other cars he was selling
(Land Rover Discovery - now gone Rich, and a BMW 2002? Or was that an
Alfa? Engine-less little sedan from the 60's). Finally I started talking
with the guy about all the stuff I found wrong, and he immediately drops
the price to $500. I ask if he can throw in storage for six months while I
clean out the garage so I can fit the car inside, he counters with "not
only will I store it, I'll detail it inside and out before I deliver to
your house."

Well, I let six months slip by, and we're well into month seven, so I
expected him to charge me some storage and didn't ask about the detailing
or the tow. Texted him to ask for it to be brought over, that took a
couple days set up a time when a driver was available in the evening. He
didn't say a word about either the detailing or the storage fee he could
have charged me, and the tow was only $30 which I gladly paid.

I think the mileage is around 113k miles. The body is very clean with no
rust. There's damage to the front bumper from the tow, so I'll need a new
bumper cover at some point. I suspect that the engine and transmission are
sound, but only time will tell. No idea about the hydraulic top condition,
I suspect I'll be getting that all rebuilt (Thanks for the contact Dan).

Re: [MBZ] Anyone Ever Heard of This?

2017-03-20 Thread MG via Mercedes
I read the whole list of messages on this and came to the
conclusion that the guy is just trying to make some money. If you
read the manual it says that if the spring in there is too weak
to keep the pressure above .8 bar then adjust it to 27mm. In
other words stretch the spring and put it back together. Which by
the way is what that guy says not to do because it causes
problems. I will always try the MB manual way first because it
hasn't caused me any problems yet. It may cause him problems in
his pocketbook but it feels just fine in mine.

One of the things the manual also says is to put a pressure gauge
on the line and pinch the banana hose shut and see if you have at
least 1-1.3 bar. If you don't then you need to rebuild the lift
pump. I will have to do that next. BTW stretching the spring on
mine to 25mm did smooth out the idle a bit.

ANYWAY, he learned of this item and was thinking he needed the Mercedes Source

research) and the part is $18, no longer a rebuild item. It comes all as a
unit and is used on IP from 1965-1985 (OM617). I have no idea what it does,
but seems it needs replaced on my SD. Just because.

Re: [MBZ] Becker BE-1432

2017-03-20 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
In a nutshell, every time an incorrect code is entered a watchdog timer in the
radio's logic resets and adds more time to the previous interval. In other
words, the more you attempt to enter incorrect codes the longer it will be
before you're allowed to re-enter a code. The timer increments in pretty large
amounts, as after making just a few attempts it can take many hours before it
resets, possibly over a day. The timer only runs while the radio is powered up,
so powering it down doesn't gain anything in the way of time.

Re: [MBZ] My $500 124 cabriolet project is finally home

2017-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes

Re: [MBZ] Macbook linux?

2017-03-20 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
An Intel Mac is an Intel PC. While Apple has added some customization to
the ROM with the EFI, it is still the base reference Intel EFI underneath.
As long as the GRUB you are using has the support for EFI in it you should
be able to boot. Also, GPT disks are usually a thing in the Apple world,
but I've got standard MBR disks to boot in my Mini. As I said in an earlier
post, though, I've had to install the Linux OS on a straight IBM PC and
transplant the disk. The Intel EFI will recognize the MBR and attempt to
boot it. Ran CentOS 6 on Mini for a while this way.

However, the Apple bit in the EFI is looking for GPT stuff, so *sometimes*
the Live CDs don't boot completely, or can't see the MBR disk once booted
because the Apple portion of the BIOS ROM didn't pass off the HDD as
available because it wasn't GPT. I haven't looked at it real low level or
anything, so I'm not 100% sure where the hiccups start happening. I just
know that I was jaw dropped surprised when I took a disk from a failed
CentOS 6 laptop and dropped into the Mini with a dead HDD that I looked
away to find a disk to boot Mac OS X with and came back to my login prompt
on CentOS 6.

I've used the workaround / trick a couple times since.

In the late 60's my mom was buying raw milk from a local farm. It came in
large-mouthed gallon glass jars, of the mayonnaise or pickles variety. Not
robust enough for commercial use, for sure. IIRC glass milk bottles are
more like hollow bowling pins, and nearly as stout.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Milk

2017-03-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
New Hampshire changed its milk laws a couple years ago allowing individual
farms to more easily sell direct to stores. As a result we're getting very good
milk in glass bottles from a couple local dairies. Costs a little more, plus
the deposit for the glass bottle, but we don't drink as much at a sitting
because the flavor is better.

Near as I can tell from brief research, the largest glass container of milk
in the 1950s would be half-gallons...

I have seen gallon cartons in the past, but they're somewhat unwieldy.
Most dairies use plastic jugs for milk nowadays.

I bought this car from a tow company that was selling it as abandoned

Driver's side window was left rolled completely down for several years, so
the interior is just a little scruffy. Someone tried to steal the car at

Re: [MBZ] OT - Maine hermit

2017-03-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Maine and New Hampster are full of them. A college friend of mine was
from the Boston area, his family would go up that way a lot, I think his
dad might have had a "camp" or something up there. His dad had a bit of
affinity for that lifestyle (he was a shop teacher and contractor) and
knew a bunch of these guys, would buy stuff from them on occasion, old
antique stuff and whatnot. The provenance of the goods was never
questioned, some of these guys were part of old families that had been
in the areas for ages, apparently they had money and goods but for
whatever reasons just went off the grid and lived like hermits.

I like that word, "hermit."

The proper response of course, is to drive the rusty 126 to Kaleb's
"hinterlands" and do the full engine swap there. Then drive home. No
trailering of non-rusty body needed.

Re: [MBZ] Macbook linux?

2017-03-20 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Curley,

Are you sure it is a Core 2? The spec list I'm looking at lists the
processor for a MacBook 1,1 as a Core Duo 1.83 13". That also explains the
2GB RAM cap, the Core Duo's were 32-Bit processors. Technically if you
could get the motherboard to recognize the DIMM it should be able to
address up to 3GB, but there is also the limitation of the 32-Bit EFI BIOS.

So, linux wise, you may want to go as lightweight as possible. Usually I
recommend Elementary OS because it is very Mac like in usage. But it is
also a bit graphics heavy so you might get annoyed with some of the
slowness. A very large amount of the distros today are based around the
Ubuntu base image, which is itself based on Debian. Debian has always had a
huge following. The other major distro would be the RPM style, Fedora
based. CentOS, Red Hat and the like. Someone else mentioned Mint, it is
also an Ubuntu based lightweight distro so would be another good choice.

Though I think you'd probably want to look at something like Lubuntu. It
runs LXDE as the desktop, so doesn't give a lot of the graphics heavy stuff
most new OSes seem to like. It has minimum specs of a P4 and 1GB of RAM, so
will run on the MacBook hardware.

I'll tell you though, I have not had much luck installing Linux directly on
Apple hardware for some reason. Always seem to get a hiccup, so your
mileage may vary. However, I have had luck installing Linux on a more IBM
styled PC system, getting GRUB loaded, yanking the disk and dropping back
in the Mac and watching it boot. Which is really wild, so if you try to
install direct and run into a lot of headaches, maybe do the initial
install on a IBM PC system and see if that works.

Which hollow bolt is it? I was looking at the EPC for my 350SDL and didn’t see
anything like it, just a bunch of hollow bolts. Maybe the OM603 doesn’t use one?

On my 300D I found a hollow bolt that it on the end of the return line where it
enters the IP - that’s referred to in the EPC as a “valve”. I;’m assuming
that’s it. A whopping $27.50 list.

In the late 50s there were gallon paper cartons and gallon glass jugs

Near as I can tell from brief research, the largest glass container of
milk

in the 1950s would be half-gallons...

I have seen gallon cartons in the past, but they're somewhat unwieldy.
Most dairies use plastic jugs for milk nowadays.

All glass as I recall (for consumers). Didn't need big quantities. Got
deliveries daily (or every other day) to an insulated box by the front door.
Fridge (or ice box) wasn't so big to hold gallons.
