Until "green" power sources are required to have enough storage that they
can put out a constant amount continuously, they will have to be backed
up with conventional sources, some of which are just idling until the
"green" source drops out. Running a conventional power plant that way is
very inefficient and wasteful, and generates more carbon dioxide than just
having the conventional plant by itself, tarnishing the "green" of
"green" power sources.

Re: [MBZ] OT cheap genset

2017-04-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Along those same lines as Craig says….

Most people don’t grasp what goes on behind the scenes at a major utility when
it comes to power production. The utility has to have generating capacity
ready and on line for the demand. If they don’t, they have to purchase power
from one of their fellow utilities through inter-local agreements, which is
very expensive.

Add to this the need to have large steam or gas turbines up and running for
peak times. From a cold start it can take a steam turbine as much as 15-18
hours to be up and on line to produce maximum power. That means in the summer
when everyone is going to turn on their AC at home in the afternoon the plant
needs to be spooled up and ready to respond to that demand - they will need to
have fired up that generator more than half a day in advance to be ready.

And what happens if there’s a sudden cold snap? That excess capacity can be
sold off to other utilities who might need it, otherwise it’s effectively lost.

This is why utilities pay very close attention to the weather, for example, as
well as keeping very precise records to baseline their production requirements.
They have to be able to estimate the needs of their customers as closely as
possible to run as efficiently as they can.

Yup, that's how it works, if you mean green mixed with conventional.

There currently is no storage on the grid: When demand increases, power
stations have to crank out more power; when demand increases, power
stations have to decrease the amount of power they are putting out.

"Green" power is highly variable hour to hour. That appears to
conventional plants as a variable demand in addition to the variation
from actual demand.

Until "green" power sources are required to have enough storage that they
can put out a constant amount continuously, they will have to be backed

Kollyphonia loonies. And the same loonies are running seattle.
Unfortunately the same cancer her been in HI for 30 years or so, and is
spreading over all the country. Most stat univ towns have gone around
the bowl and down the hole, then they infect the state. The lower
income the state, the less infected they are. People who love to spend
OPM need OPM to thrive.

Well, I'm just across the river in Vancouver (The 'couve). The state
government of OR and the city of Portland are rather to the left of
center. There also are some totalitarian tendencies. If you don't
agree with their policies, they would like to squash you. And don't
get in the way of their income from red light cameras!

My brother has an ME degree from The Cooper Union and a master's in
industrial engineering from NYU, but a friend told me he was not
really an engineer because he was not a licensed PE. Really!

There's a lot of craziness out there WRT credentials and licensing.

2017-04-26 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
They seldom have those with the magnet on back for free. I grab that
kind any time I can. The little round ones are great when you throw out
the HF batteries and put rayovac or other quality batteries in em. I
left one on under a media desk, and it was still putting out light the
next day when I went to retrieve it. That was the first one that got
new batteries and it was about twice as bright as a new one with HF
batteries. HF batteries are pure crap.

I have screwdrivers out the wazoo now. I go to the 4 in 1 or 6 in 1
first. Then the old 1/4 x 12" snears crapsman. I have 5 or 6 of them
scattered in different places. Most of the others just sit. a 1/8 x 4"
is nice too. I used to carry one in my toolbox all the time. It will
also work on phillips screws if it is not in too tight.

[MBZ] WTB: '94-'95 124 wagon

2017-04-26 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Wanted to Buy: '94 or '95 124 wagon, will be recipient body for OM603
transplant. The ideal wagon would have a blown engine or transmission but
otherwise immaculate, $1000 or less.

Unlike Dan, I can't travel anywhere to get it, and the best prices will be
for a dead or dying car that I'll have to tow home. In the event the car is
in good running condition so I can drive back to SC, I'm not too interested
in a multi-day drive, so a running car probably needs to be east of the
Mississippi.

Re: [MBZ] Find Me a Finnie!

2017-04-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
A very crowded driveway right now. If these kids would ever move out I would
have more space...

I have a two car garage (300D & SL500) a three car wide driveway (1994 S420,
350SDL, 300SEL) and the street (1998 S420).

The two W126 cars are usually parked end to end in front of the 300D's garage
so the SL500 can come and go freely. Needless to say it's quite a ballet when I
need to work on a particular car in the garage.

With the 300SEL coming online soon, either it or the 98 S420 will be departing.
I will have room for the Finnie.

Exactly my thought. Wouldn't that be something, pop in a bushing or
two and it's good to go... It did have fluid in it and didn't smell
burned so that part seemed OK. I'll have to wait until I get it where
I can get it lifted. I think my friend might let me put it in her
barn so that would be a good place to work on it.

I need to get a battery for it too, get a filter and see about gas.
Any thoughts on resurrecting that aspect to see if the engine will run
after so long?

Max and I went and looked at the POSEL300 yesterday. The kid wanted
$300 for it, said the tranny was bad, had sat for 5 or 6 years. It
was in surprisingly good shape, body very good, paint starting to fade
a bit on top (calling MarthaPoos), interior not too bad though one
window was down with a tarp in it and another was down about an inch,
but it wasn't moldy or anything. Fairly clean. Gave him $200 for it,
gonna go pick it up this afternoon or tomorrow with my trailer. It is
a sorta brown/bronze color, not too dark. I'll have to run the VIN.

As we were leaving we noticed a 126 sitting at a tow yard across the
street. We went over to take a look at it, really nice maroon 500SEL
that someone had hit 2 palmettos on the RF and completely destroyed
it, they had just towed it in. Tow guy said it was on Keewaw. Blood
on driver airbag, he said the driver was in the hospital. I asked
about buying the hulk, thinking a 500->300SEL swap... He said they
would have to wait for insco to sort it out, call back in a week.
I'll keep track of it, see if the engine/tranny looks intact. I tried
to track down who it might have belonged but no luck so far.

I am supposing that swapping about any 126 engine into a 126 chassis
should be fairly straightforward? Wilton/Max's dizzel (though from
diff chassis)? This POSEL could be a fairly nice car maybe. Or if we
can get the engine running, is the 300 tranny anything special to that
engine or will any 126 tranny fit? Or maybe the tranny problem is
something simple, the kid said it just quit working, would not go into
F or R, which does not sound like a progressive failure. i wonder if
the shifter is working.

I got plates for the 560SEC yesterday so gonna get that beeste on the
road and having some fun.

Exactly my thought. Wouldn't that be something, pop in a bushing or two
and it's good to go... It did have fluid in it and didn't smell burned
so that part seemed OK. I'll have to wait until I get it where I can
get it lifted. I think my friend might let me put it in her barn so
that would be a good place to work on it.

I need to get a battery for it too, get a filter and see about gas. Any
