Randy,

I am not getting call backs from those shops. I was referred to a few by other
shops. I think they are not interested in screwing with insurance companies.

But what would running a Linux guest in Virtualbox on the Win 7 laptop
gain me? I still need to get a tolerable UI in Linux, and Gnome 3 is NOT

The USB is an externally-powered hard disk that needs 120 VAC for its
power supply -- not exactly useful with a laptop.

Synchronizing back to Linux IS NOT the problem. rsync on Cygwin takes care
of that just fine.

Synchronizing from Linux to Win 7 IS the problem.

scp will retain permissions. I really don't know how permissions
are handled on NTFS and how Cygwin will translate them.

What file system is on the USB stick? FAT32 does not have
permissions. That should be rwx for all files. When putting them
back onto Linux, you can pass options to the mount command to set
the uid and gid.

I was a late adopter of Windows - waited until 3.1. I think I've only
skipped one or two versions since then. Didn't get into the servers until
3.5. Almost all of the problems I've had were application related, not the
OS. This includes managing a network of 8000+ PCs at 80+ locations with
150+ servers, and migrating them from W95 through W7. Very few problems
other than the applications we wrote in house.
The publications unit hired a bunch of new staff who demanded MACs - they
were a pain to support and constantly had issues with their machines - more
than the Windows users per capita, but then again, they were "special"
people, being artists and all.

I also run Ubuntu (now) for fun and since my free MSDN licenses dried up
when I retired on a laptop. It updates as often or more so than the M$
machines, and has more in-expected issues that require re-boots to cure
(reading encrypted USB sticks).

YMMV.

So who do you think is helping you when you have Windows problems? The other
users who find the issues and make reports to Microsoft thats who. If there was
no user community there would be minimal support. Of course if it worked better

I installed Win7 on this laptop and it had Mal-ware within days, mostly from

Some predictions have changed. It looks like it may go up the east coast of
Florida and on to points north, or go further out to sea and spare Florida
except for high tides along the east coast.

The weather bureau in Miami always makes the likelyhood of a hurricane hitting
Florida worse than it is since there are lots of tourists and new residents who
would not make preparations.
The meteorologists are rated on their reports of size, strength, and direction
of hurricanes; but even more severely on loss of life.
Hurricanes alone don't deter tourists and people moving to Florida, but loss of
life from hurricanes does.

The latest trend is for Irma to veer sharply to the North - with the eye
passing to the East of, sparing it a direct hit. What would follow is a
whole slew of possible tracks as the storm makes its way up the coast,
including a direct hit on Charleston. Yikes! Or it could barrel out to
sea...

When KYB came out with adjustable struts in the early 1990s, I put a pair on
the front of the Plymouth. A couple of years later when one started leaking,
KYB gave me two more. A couple of years later when one started leaking, KYB
said they didn't make adjustables for that car any more, gave me a pair of
single tube gas struts, and told me the replacement struts didn't have lifetime
warranty so I wouldn't be getting any more replacements under warranty, the
fact that I'd bought two fairly expensive struts with lifetime warranty didn't
matter.

And that was the end of KYB buying for me. Fortunately the non-adjustables
never failed. IME, KYB never worked as well as Bilstein anyway, but they were
always cheap and easy to find.

Mitch.

If it hangs out and makes it into the Gulf we'll be in big trouble. The NE

My problem is not transferring files from the Win 7 laptop to the Linux
desktop; that works well with rsync in Cygwin.

My problem is getting ready for another trip and updating the Win 7 laptop
with the changed files and directories from the Linux desktop.

I guess I could do as I originally did, update the files on the ext3 USB
disk and then use the Win 7 application that reads from (but not writes
to) the ext3 USB disk to put the emails and directories on the Win 7
laptop, but that, as far as I know, requires deleting all the emails and
directories from the laptop and copying all of them from the ext3 USB
disk, which takes a LONG time (I currently have 1140 directories and
70812 files, which take up 4.2 gigabytes).

If it was me, and thunderbird, I'd make trip folders, search and move messages
into them by date, get the new folders from the travel computer going on the
home computer, and move the messages from the travel folders to the permanent
folders from within T-Bird.

Not exactly true, an active user community is what allows you quick answers to
questions. A quality OS means you won't have that many problems.Other than a
couple user questions (like trackpad shortcuts) I found the Mac easy to pick
up. I've got a new Macbook Pro on order through my employer, it ought to be in
any day now, I've only been waiting 6 weeks. Yay IT...

2017-09-06 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Can you segregate all the changes (all the received and sent emails) to the
email directories from the trip, and copy them off to a USB? If you can
separate those and save them from the Win7 laptop, then only import those
to the Linux system? In other words, use the old version that is still on
the Linux and just update that with changes from the trip, rather than
trying to copy all the files / directories back over to the Linux system.

Gee, that's sort of a personal question, isn't it?

Oh! You mean are we bugging out?

Too early to decide. If the storm tracks up the east coast as we're hoping it
does, we'll just hunker down and shelter in place. I have plywood, water,
generator, fuel, etc., so we're as prepared as we can be for now.

You'll enjoy "Breaking Bad", I was totally hooked after watching the first
episode of season two. I ended up watching all but the last season on Amazon
