Curt Raymond via Mercedes

Some of you might remember the cache of very old (2006) Macbook Pro
laptops I found at work awhile ago. Since I STILL haven't gotten a
replacement (9 weeks yesterday) for my dead work laptop I carry one of
them when I travel.I've been using Lubuntu linux which is a
lightweight Ubuntu distro. It works acceptably well but takes a long
time to boot and runs the fan in the computer HARD.
Today I took a spare machine and installed antiX which is the
lightweight of Mephis, based on Debian. So far results are positive,
this machine has 2GB of RAM while the other has 4GB and this one boots
faster and seems to run more smoothly. Its using IceWM for a window
manager which I think is the magic to being so lightweight. So far
everything I want to do works, I can get online, check email, watch
Youtube, go to Reddit, etc. Later on I've got some graphics to edit,
I'm going to install Gimp and give that a go.
I'm sold. They claim antiX will run on a PIII, this thing is a
powerhouse by comparison...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Generator Heads

2017-09-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And like most industrial diesels, the Cat engine he has is limited to a maximum
rpm of 3400, I believe. At 3600 rpm it would be coming apart.

There are so, so many reasons NOT to run a generator at 3600 rpm (two pole)
compared to 1800 rpm or a lower speed with a two bearing alternator:

Increased fuel consumption
Increased engine wear
Shorter life resulting from above
Higher noise level from engine and cooling fan
Less mass in rotating components, meaning poorer response to load changes
Higher requirements for combustion and cooling air

I could go on…

2017-09-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Turns out I was wrong, this machine only had 1GB of RAM. I started with 8
machines each having 3GB, I'd forgotten that I ended with 4 machines having
4GB, 1 with 2GB and the rest with 1GB because I didn't have them all in the
same place at the same time.
Its MUCH peppier with 4GB. Runs the fan less and so far doesn't seem to have
used any swap space. Last night I was trying to write in Google Drive while
watching YouTube and it'd run out of RAM and freeze up, no problem with that
now. antiX only seems to see 3GB but its good enough.I think when I get home
I'm going to pull the SSD out of the PC I almost never use and try it in this...

Run - yes. But you better have a swap partition of reasonable size

Re: [MBZ] Battery Chargers

2017-09-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have a 6A Schauer 6/12 V charger that my mom and I got for Dad with
Regal stamps about 50 yrs ago. It works great. I have cut off and
resoldered both cords and both clamps. (Dad liked to wrap the cords
tight around the charger) It has been sun into with tractors and
straightened, but it works like a champ. Takes forever to charge a grp
49 batt'ry.

I have another Schauer that is 10 or 12 amp that is about 30 yrs old.
It works great also.

Jim Cathey via Mercedes
September 14, 2017 at 8:19 PM
Too-rapid recharging is not conducive to battery longevity. I believe
that's the big reason that the 8-10A top rate is so common.

My Shauer (?) automatic charger, which I use ALL the time, is still
working

great. After at least 25 years. Sears, I think. Wish I could find
another one.

No reconditioning, no burst charging modes.

Re: [MBZ] Meter on Amazon ? Good value?

2017-09-17 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
>
> What do you think it means ... 60A/600A ±(3% +6) ". What is the +6???

Standard rating type for digital systems. It's telling you that the
accuracy is a percentage of the range the meter is set to, PLUS some fixed
number of LSD counts it may be off by. +/- 3%, AND +/- 6 counts in the LSD
regardless of whatever
percentage that might represent.

what does the "4000 count" refer to
>

Also classic. In the early years, NIX-II (nixie) tube days, the carry bit
out of the last column of the logic
was interpreted as a "1". (Special [cheaper] display element, separate
lamp, etc.) This became the
1/2 digit in a precision spec., and was the norm for years. Later, Fluke
(others?) widened the MSD's
range from 0-1 to 0-3, resulting in a max count of 3999 (4000 discrete
values from the counter chain).
I think they call that a 3/4 digit or something like that.

It's just another way to tell you the breadth of a range.

I just tested out my Fluke 83, and its top count is not 3999, it's 4095.
Not very much different, but telling.
Clearly it's now binary inside and not BCD, unlike early digital meters.
It's possible that the "4000 count"
label has always meant this, I don't have any middle-aged digital meters.

[MBZ] Is there anybody there?

2017-09-17 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes

‘Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller,
   Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champed the grasses
   Of the forest’s ferny floor:
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
   Above the Traveller’s head:
And he smote upon the door again a second time;
‘Is there anybody there?’ he said.
But no one descended to the Traveller;
No head from the leaf-fringed sill
Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes,
Where he stood perplexed and still.
But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men.
