Is this the 2.2 or the 2.5?

I think these return something in the very high 30’s to low 40’s at freeway
speeds. In town it drops to high 20’s

Re: [MBZ] Tree stains on 240D

2018-04-17 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
I vote for peanut butter to remove the sap.

As for stain, I am not sure what will be best. I would at least try a dilute
hydrogen peroxide solution, as that might do a number on the organic compounds
without eating into the paint. Clay Bar is what I would chase that with to
remove the really small organic stuff. Follow that with a very light
correcting fluid and wax/sealant

Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99

2018-04-17 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Randy,

YES, M1 is the bomb when it comes to cold temps.

I watched a yooo tooob video a few months back where the testing fellow had
four liters of oil he had tossed in the deep freeze for 24 hours. They were
M1, Royal Purple, the dead sam gunk and another FLAPS oil which escapes me.
The jugs were upended, each over a large beaker and allowed to flow. The M1
beat all others to empty the jug into the beaker. The dead sam gunk was not
able to flow, and the purple stuff was less than spectacular. M1 remained
fluid at -40 and began flowing within seconds of being up ended. The others
required at least a minute to attempt egress from their containers.

[MBZ] Copart 190D

2018-04-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Well I won the auction for the copart 190D that had traveled the world.
I put in a max bid of $475 last night, auction was today. When the
auction started I watched it for about an hour until the 190 came up.
Most of the cars were getting very little action. Some late model
wrecked cars were only going for a couple hundred bucks.  There as a 05
CLK 500 I think it was that was a convertible that barely made it to
$1k.  Its only issue listed was minor dents and scratches.  The auction
on the 190 started out at $225 as somebody bid online today.  No action
happening, finally somebody started bidding.  Auction ended up at $425
with me as the winner.  I still think its going to be a fair deal as
from what I can tell the car looks to be in really good shape except for
faded paint on the hood.  If the car turns out to be decent I will
probably turn it into my work car.  The manny is a 5 speed in these,
correct?  What kind of mileage do they get?

2018-04-17 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Listers,
While a project was ongoing in the shop, I parked the '83 240D out in the open
away from the trees. During the night a 30+ mile-per-hour wind came through and
blew bits of sap or whatever its called all over the car which left reddish
stains on the light tan finish. I washed the car but the stains remained. These
small bits of soft material probably came from oak trees since that is the
commonest kind here; although it could have come from other kinds since it was
a very strong wind.
The last waxing with 3M Show Car Wax (Thanks Dan!) is still intact.

The internet provides every possible solution imaginable; for example:

Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99

2018-04-17 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Even the ESP stuff is fairly cheap, and saves the number of oil changes needed
if you go to extended intervals. Cars and mechanical work are expensive; IMO it
makes sense to spend a bit more for better performance under adverse conditions.

As far as quickie oil change places: When changing oil on a Benz or VW, I do it
from the top with the MityVac in much less time than spending that time waiting
in line to have some barely employable kid screw up my car. For the Powerchoke

Despite Herr Booth's claims of drastically reduced timing chain wear (back
in the day) with M1, I've switched to cheap oil based on "big data"

That was very interesting. I still wonder if synthetic like Mobil1 is
better on cold dead of winter starts and really hot days in summer with
the ac cranked on.
Those would seem to me to be among the times when the motor might be
under the most stress and I therefore wonder if the better oil is worth
it for those times.

Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99

2018-04-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
As with anything it depends on what you're after. If you're willing to do more
frequent changes then good enough is indeed good enough.
I like to extend the change intervals so my Jetta gets M1 5w40 now that Car
Quest synthetic isn't available anymore. I was surprised that the Car Quest met
the VW spec for that car but it did and it was cheap. The Golf gets LiquiMoly
4100 which meets the VW spec for that engine. There are no conventional oils
that meet the spec and of the stuff you can buy at FLAPS only Valvoline
does. Both cars get changed at 10,000 miles which is the VW spec in the US.
The pickup gets Valvoline synthetic from the Valvoline quick change place down
the road. That said it gets a weird little shudder at idle after about 5,000
miles. I'd wanted to do 8000 or more miles on a change but...I'm thinking to
change the oil myself to Mobil 1 and see how it does.

Walmart, however, does have a price rollback:

https://www.mobil.com/en/mobil-delvac/products/promotions/walmart-rollback-1300-super-motor-oil

Mobil Delvac is on Rollback at Walmart from Feb. 1-May 3, 2018.
1-gallon jugs are $10.97, and 2.5-gallon jugs are $26.97.

[MBZ] T Bird and '86 420 SEL on BAT

2018-04-17 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I am becoming disturbingly attracted to mid 60s Thunderbirds. This one has
PW and a swing out steering wheel, and may sell for a STUPID low price.
Just to cruise around in such a car w/o fixing a thing - very tempting and
wildly impractical.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1965-ford-thunderbird-3/?utm_source=dailymail_medium=email_campaign=2018-04-17

The 420 SEL is way more boring but has low miles and is a pretty color.
May reach $20k when all is said and done.

2018-04-17 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
That's INSANE. Even in high cost D.C. we're 15 - 20 percent lower.

Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99

2018-04-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Not a bad deal, $4.50 / qt for 0w-40.

A new Costco is going up just up the road from my place in Mt. Plastic, so
all those new apartment residences in south Mt. P can drive by my place to
get to the Costco in north Mt. P. We're getting a Home Despot as well,
good times. Need a flying car pretty soon, or maybe I'll have to get
around by boat.
