More food for thought

I am probably spending way too much time looking at numbers and so
forth. It appears this cheap assed Harvest King CJ-4 oil has better
specs, on paper, than the new CK-4 Delvac 1300 and Delo 400 SDE. It
appears to have higher ZDDP levels but the TBN is slightly lower. I am
not sure which would be more important, if either, when applied to 60x
engines, or 117, 119, 103, 104 etc.

It looks to me like the real winner is actually the new Shell T4 CK-4.
It seems to still have good ZDDP levels and a good TBN.

[MBZ] AC question

2018-06-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So when I did the R134 conversion I changed the drier or course. So I am
going to have to open the system again to replace the hoses.  Since I
just changed the drier if I was doing a quick open and close of the
system, I would probably just pull a vacuum and not change the drier
again.  Most likely I will end up pulling the manifold and having new
hoses installed, so it might be open for days.  In that case, even
though the drier is new, am I going with the correct assumption I should
replace the drier again?

[MBZ] Headlight polishing

2018-06-17 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I got a HF headlight polishing kit for this E300D and just finished with them.
Look a lot better but inside seems kinda goobered up too. But I guess getting
them cleaned up will pass more light at night.

Looks like there might be bulbs on the top part of the low beam housing, are
these the DRLs? The manual suggests this car might have DRLs but I don’t see
any but the panel is telling me there are lamps out so maybe that’s them. One
of the fog lamps is out too, I need to get bulbs I guess.

Check the air filter, if you have not already... Rough start and hard
stumble would tell me to look two places... Not enough air... or not enough
fuel... Rule # 1 for diesel is "Clean air, Clean fuel, Clean oil."

Since it is belching black, that tells me you "may" be getting enough fuel
[clean or not, still a question] however, you may not be getting enough
clean air to make a start and idle as you accelerate above 3000 RPM,
air flow increases to overcome blocked air filter?

Just a thought likely, you've already gone there.

[MBZ] 126 acc vaccum

2018-06-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I had a vacuum leak under a hood a few weeks go which I found and
fixed and it got the air blowing out of the center vents 100% instead of
some air leaking out defrost.  Last week I noticed it was leaking out
the defrost again.  I thought I probably had another leak. I checked
everything under the hood and did not find any leaks.  With the mitivac
hooked to the line going to the acc it does not hold vacuum anymore
while the system is running. It does hold while system is off.  So it
looks like I probably have one of the pods leaking.  Does the dash have
to come out to get to all of them on a 126?  Are these still available
or are they NLA like most other parts seem to be these days.

 More food for thought

I am probably spending way too much time looking at numbers and so forth. It
appears this cheap assed Harvest King CJ-4 oil has better specs, on paper, than
the new CK-4 Delvac 1300 and Delo 400 SDE. It appears to have higher ZDDP
levels but the TBN is slightly lower. I am not sure which would be more
important, if either, when applied to 60x engines, or 117, 119, 103, 104 etc.

It looks to me like the real winner is actually the new Shell T4 CK-4. It
seems to still have good ZDDP levels and a good TBN.

Re: [MBZ] Mitchmobile?

2018-06-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Not just the electronic toy versions of MB that a battery can screw
up! I spent a lot of time and $$$ on the R107 diagnosing a fuel
problem. After I replaced fuel filter, fuel pump and fuel pump relay,
and it still did not run right, the battery failed. The new battery
cured all ills. BTW, the battery tested OK, but I was not able to load
test it. A load test may have shown it was bad sooner.

Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes wrote:

I examined the carfax I got from Kleb and determined that the MB battery was 9
years old. I guessed that it could be causing problems with the electronics
because of a slightly low voltage, and I don't try to stretch battery life past
5 or 6 years, so replaced it, even though it cranked and started up just fine.
I may have read somewhere that MB computer electronics are very sensitive to
voltage levels. That solved the error code problem. So, a lucky guess?

Do you veterans stick with Bilsteins or are there perfectly good alternatives

[MBZ] This $500E300D is making me crazy

2018-06-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I started it up today, it belched smoke and wouldn't keep running, I
finally nursed it to running and it was stumbling and rough below
3000rpm but after a few minutes it kept running at idle so I let it sit
for awhile to charge up the battery and it got to running better.  So I
shut it off after awhile and worked on the SEC bulb sockets and messed
with that.

Decided to take it out to see if it would run OK and lo mirabilu dictu
it is running fine.  It still belches some smoke off idle and is a bit
rough up to like 3000rpm but then runs fine above that.  At about 60 it
felt like it was getting up on the turbo and had some great
acceleration, or maybe some nanny was making it run like it should.
Anyway, no real problems.

I'm wondering if that new tank of fuel stirred something up and now it
is sorting itself out or something.  I hope I can drive it OK until the
tank is low then I'll pull the tank filter and see how goobered up it
is.  I'm thinking to put some biocide in the tank and see if that helps
anything, though it seems OK now. Maybe some of that Liqui (Lubro? same
can different name) Moly stuff too.

The last couple months I've spent my weekends building new metal ductwork

The old ductwork job was terrible, the take-off collars were very poorly
attached and not sealed to the main trunk, so there was a lot of air
leaking at the joints, which resulted in condensation, which lead to wet
ineffective insulation and mold growing inside the ducts. Nasty!

Old ductwork insulation was R6, new is R8, so I should see a reduction in
power consumption, plus much cleaner and healthy air.

I found a local HVAC supply warehouse that has no problem selling to
homeowners, so far the metal ductwork, insulation, and tape and mastic cost
is about $300, then there are ten flexible ducts off the main trunk that
were another $30 each.

Next up will be similar work for the attic ductwork, probably wait until
fall or winter for that. No mold up there, but same leaky take-off collars.

Re: [MBZ] a disappointing day

Depends on how much time you can mess with it, I think the least expensive
route is taking your old hose to a hydraulic shop to get new hose installed
on your old fittings.

My favorite was the girl who quickly found the dipstick, but then tried to
measure the oil level by inserting the dipstick into the oil fill on the
valve cover
