Re: [MBZ] ChowdahQ XI two weeks away 9/8/18
Next time, get a MAP/Oxy torch, heat up those arms (around the ball joint) tell they just glow, and the ball joints pop right out like butter. I used that procedure on the last set of 124 ball joints, I actually used a big harbor freight clamp to push them in and out, made the whole job SOOO much easier. I think the hardest part was cutting off the threaded part of the old joint so that the clamp had a nice place to push on. Buddy with a machine shop made an adapter from a piece of pipe that fits the bottom of the arm so the joint gets pushed into that cavity inside the pipe. I bought a MAP/oxy torch at tractor supply for about $50 several years ago, it is a great thing to have when you need it. The little tanks for oxygen are a little pricey, like $10 each for about 30 minutes of work, but Lowes keeps them in stock so I don't have to worry about re-supply. - Max Charleston SC On Sat, Sep 1, 2018 at 8:07 PM Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I also banged out the old ball joints from the spindles. Re: [MBZ] Can I reuse this hose fitting?
A good hose shop will have all the right stuff to remove the crimp and save the fitting. They will also have the right hose to make up a replacement, and crimp it properly. The crimp sleeve will be cut off and the barbed feral inside the hose saved, undamaged. A new proper sized crimp sleeve will be put on that will hold the pressure required... Should be an easy "in and out" job.. Re: [MBZ] ChowdahQ XI two weeks away 9/8/18
I hit a bit of a setback this week trying to find the time to work, but I was back at it last night and today. I finished pulling the old bushings out of the control arms and subframe. I ended up burning the last two out, worked like a charm. I then sand blasted, primed, and painted the arms. I ended up breaking a bolt off the held the spring cup on one arm, so I had to drill that out and tap a new hole. New bushings went in without an issue... slid right in with some rubber paste. I also banged out the old ball joints from the spindles. The first one came out with a few blows from a 4 lbs sledge... under a minute. The second one took a few hours. I managed to get it to move a bit with the 4 lbs sledge before breaking the handle. The hardware store didn't have any handles, but they did have a 6 lbs sledge, so I bought that. Blow after blow... plus heat from MAP gas... finally the thing popped out. I'm already sore, tomorrow will be worse i suspect. Still left to do: replace the upper control arms, which should go pretty easily. Change the wheel bearings and install new rotors on the hub. Reassmble the suspension. Install a new master cylinder and bleed the brakes. Then I need an alignment. Its going to be tight for the Q, but i'm going to try. I think we've talked about my old TI before. Recently I've been watching "The 8-Bit Guy" on YouTube and it got me thinking about retro computing. My favorite game of all time is "Tunnels of Doom" on my TI but it requires data to be loaded from audio take which takes 200 seconds. I've got a floppy drive but its in a big expansion box that has to stay on the whole time the program is being used, its big and its loud and, well you get the idea. It turns out a bunch of people are making new stuff to be used with these vintage consoles so I've ordered a "TIPI" which I guess is pronounced "tee-pee". It uses a Raspberry PI as a storage device and even to connect to the internet through a telnet connection. I had to get a 32K RAM expander too, at this point I think I've probably spent as much on this project as my parents spent on the console... Re: [MBZ] OT - sort of - bearings
After noticing that most jet aircraft have flat bottoms, and how often planes overshoot runways, I thought of attaching something like brake lining to the bottom of jets and attaching the bottom to hydraulic shock absorbers which would lower the friction material covered bottom before landing. Think of how much quicker and safer a plane would land with all that brake lining slowing it down far faster than brakes and tires. It would also eliminate the need for emergency slides and elaborate boarding equipment since the passengers cold just step in and out of the plane. It wold also end the problem of passengers unfastening their seat belts before landing. The first few times someone in the back rown found himself in somebodies lap on the front row, other passengers would get the message. Besides that, all the flames and smoke billowing out from underneath the plane would make air travel more exciting and help out the airlines business. I'm going to send my idea to Elon Musk who will try anything as long as the govenment pays for it. Gerry . G Mann wrote: > Great thought. Re: [MBZ] OT - sort of - bearings
Great thought. Now design the entire system without adding one ounce of weight or another system that can fail to the aircraft. oops being an aircraft, you need to also have a "redundant system" so if one wheel spin up fails, a fail safe system can take over... can't have one wheel set spinning and the other side dead stop... it would generate control issues on touch down... bad ju ju... Also, if you used air turbine device to spin up the wheels... how do you control tire rotation speed? Rubber tires have rotation speed limits before failure... an air turbine at flight approach speeds, uncontrolled, could spin the tires to explosion... or early failure due to repeated excess spin speed... oops another bad ju ju... Answer keep buying new tires... in long term... cheap and safe... compared to potential risks. Re: [MBZ] OT - sort of - bearings
Back in the 70s when I worked as a summer intern at NASA Langley in the flight research dept I brought up this idea, thought it would save on tires. I had been flying for awhile at that point, and always cringed at touchdown when I heard the tires squeal. Then being in the flight research group I would see the planes land and hear the same thing, they had the forst F-15s there too that had these little tiny tires it looked like, they got beat up pretty good. I figured if they could get up to some speed first it would save rubber and stress. For some reason no one thought it was a good idea, I'm sure it had been thought of before, it was kinda simply intuitive, but I guess for some reasons unclear it has never happened. --FT On 9/1/18 12:01 AM, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes wrote: As I recall from Test Pilot School days, it's been tried but it increased the required runway length.
