You need to create a business case analysis (bca) covering life cycle costs
from soup to nuts, and bury her with numbers. Once the "new" non-star car

both options, you'll be able to win the argument. Insurance, fuel, garage

I still have the SDL. I gave it rattle can two years ago as a quick and dirty.
Since it remains running well, I would replace the poor quality sheet metal
with better at $25 a pop. Paint booth rental is all of $160 for a weekend.
Much simpler to have the old stuff go away and bolt on the pretty ones in an
afternoon.

The W220 was not bottom fed. That really sealed the fate of the Star Cars in
her mind. NO Benz is good in her eyes. The w124 was too “snooty” for her, and
repair costs on that 15 year old car were not “fiscally responsible”.

My vote would be to put a low miles 617 in the SD at less than one years car
payments. It may not be a perfect car, but I can source better wood trim,
rebuild the seating, and make upgrades for lower costs. That “newer” car will
require paying a shop to work on it, as I will not. Not into computer stuff

The W210s are simple and easy to maintain, that’s what I like about them.
Maybe not as simple and easy as a W110, but simple, none the less. Their
issues are well understood and known, so an issue like this one was highly
likely to be the CPS, with the fuel pump relay and lastly the K40 relay, all
common faults for the W210.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Went in to the office at the regular hour (6:15 am) and did the final
configuration for a new SecurityOnion server that was being installed
at our DR (disaster recovery) site. Got the NIC configured for the new
IP address, gateway and DNS, grabbed some cables and loaded it up in
the wagon.

Got out to the DR site, got the server racked and stacked in short
order and sat down for a little bit in one of the cubes to check the
configuration. Working fine, so…

Good friend and former coworker was retiring fro the school district
today after 30 some odd years. Their data center is not far from our
DR site, so I swung by there and caught him for lunch. Lot of
reminiscing and good times. Looked at my phone on the way back to his
office and saw I missed three calls and some texts from the youngest
son (2002 E320). Hmm.

Got out of retiree’s office and called the son. Car died on him in
Starbuck’s drive through. He got a ride home from a buddy and was
waiting for me when I arrived home. Immediately hit my notes and was
thinking fuel pump relay, K40 relay and… crankshaft position sensor! I
had a CPS and fuel pump relay, so we piled in the E320 wagon with the
SnapOn diagnostic box and headed to Starbucks.

Pop open the hood, plug in the SnapOn box, configure it for his car
and - nothing. Go back through the configuration and realize I had set
it for 1998 W210, NOT 2002. Ah-ha! Now we get some talking going on
with the ECU, which immediately dumps a CPS error. CEL was on, too,
which he said had not been happening prior to this.

He cranked it up and it ran. Drove the car home (quickly) and put it
in the garage with the garage AC on (it’s in the high 80s here today
and humid as heck.)

Went back out in 30 minutes or so, replaced the CPS (I always keep a
spare around for good reason) and off he went after I cleared the CEL.

Back into the house to catch up with 3-4 hours of work I had to get
done before tomorrow, as some updates have to be pushed at 6:00 am
tomorrow before production starts for the day.

Ordered another CPS to replace the stock part I took off the shelf
today. It sure pays off to keep some of the common stuff sitting around….

[MBZ] My Crazy Day....

2018-11-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Went in to the office at the regular hour (6:15 am) and did the final
configuration for a new SecurityOnion server that was being installed at our DR
(disaster recovery) site. Got the NIC configured for the new IP address,
gateway and DNS, grabbed some cables and loaded it up in the wagon.

Got out to the DR site, got the server racked and stacked in short order and
sat down for a little bit in one of the cubes to check the configuration.
Working fine, so…

Good friend and former coworker was retiring fro the school district today
after 30 some odd years. Their data center is not far from our DR site, so I
swung by there and caught him for lunch. Lot of reminiscing and good times.
Looked at my phone on the way back to his office and saw I missed three calls
and some texts from the youngest son (2002 E320). Hmm.

Got out of retiree’s office and called the son. Car died on him in Starbuck’s
drive through. He got a ride home from a buddy and was waiting for me when I
arrived home. Immediately hit my notes and was thinking fuel pump relay, K40
relay and… crankshaft position sensor! I had a CPS and fuel pump relay, so we
piled in the E320 wagon with the SnapOn diagnostic box and headed to Starbucks.

Pop open the hood, plug in the SnapOn box, configure it for his car and -
nothing. Go back through the configuration and realize I had set it for 1998
W210, NOT 2002. Ah-ha! Now we get some talking going on with the ECU, which
immediately dumps a CPS error. CEL was on, too, which he said had not been
happening prior to this.

He cranked it up and it ran. Drove the car home (quickly) and put it in the
garage with the garage AC on (it’s in the high 80s here today and humid as
heck.)

Went back out in 30 minutes or so, replaced the CPS (I always keep a spare
around for good reason) and off he went after I cleared the CEL.

Back into the house to catch up with 3-4 hours of work I had to get done before
tomorrow, as some updates have to be pushed at 6:00 am tomorrow before
production starts for the day.

Ordered another CPS to replace the stock part I took off the shelf today. It
sure pays off to keep some of the common stuff sitting around….

Thanks Max,
I have a Dewalt Electr wrench - depending on compressors  and air gun,
the electr gun sometimes has more uumph.

Your point about the nut being shallow is appreciated - I understand the
concern.  I guess if I round it off I can cut it with a chisel if
careful not to damage threads?  which may be tricky...

Thanks again,
LarryT

That twelve point nut: lock the parking brake and leave transmission in gear.
Lean hard into your air gun, the nut is shallow and easily rounded off.
