[MBZ] OT Salted nuts
SWMBA and I are in disagreement about winter road conditions along the Atlantic coast and other real winter places. I contend that the roads are salted and that this continues to this day. She is of the opinion that salting roads is an ecological crime and if they do not salt her Alaska roads, the rest of the nation, especially in the radical liberal enclaves of the North East, salt has been banned. I understand that salt being flushed into streams that support anadromous fishies is not a nice thing. But, there are no fish of any value left feeding into the Atlantic, and the white man cares not a whit for his footprint or damage to indigenous populations back east. The First Peoples out that way are without the stout Treaty rights that the Pacific Coastal tribes enjoy. SO, those who are in the know (last time I spent any winter time back east was over 50 years ago) who gets the victory cupcake? clay monroe redgh...@comcast.net ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I think that must be them "big city" MA inspections, I don't have any issues in my little town but I always send Angie or dress in my oldest, scruffiest clothes and don't take a shower that morning so I look my redneck best... I used to have to get inspections in Massachusetts and Texas, and they would always find something wrong that they could then "repair." I had just filled it the day before, having checked the car over for various things I figured they would jump on. The fluid was halfway between "add" and "fill." So after waiting around for an hour, paying the $35, I got into an argument with the shop owner (whose daughter went to school with mine, so I figured I'd toss him the business). Of course you can't get reinspected right away, you have to come back tomorrow or later and pay some kind of reinspection fee, and of course they had scraped off the old sticker which was problematic. Next day I come back with the section printed off the workshop CD, showed the guy, told him to give me the damn sticker now, no more screwing around, but of course they need to redo the inspection (diesel was exempt on the emissions aspect, so it was just a "safety" inspection). So then he finds a wiper was bad and he wants to put a new one on for like $15 parts and labor. Thing was, I had put on a new wiper just recently, had the empty package in the back with the receipt, so then we got into that. Finally I decided I would just stand around while their bay was taken up, 3 or 4 other cars waiting, I finally outlasted him and got the sticker and got out of there. Nothing he was "finding" compromised safety in any way, but for the others who came through and ended up paying more for "repairs" it was quite a racket. Re: [MBZ] Whoo hoo, new wheel bearing
I had to have both rear wheel bearings on my Jetta replaced within a couple months of each other. What is it with mechanics that don't want to replace both sides at the same time? I had the same trouble on my '85 190D, one front bearing failed, my guy replaced it "Oh they never go bad together." The other side failed exactly one week later, I replaced it myself in the driveway, that was the day I taught myself to do wheel bearings, buggered the pre-load on that one and it didn't last a whole year, did a better job the second time and it lasted the year or so I kept the car... -Curt On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, 10:25:08 PM EST, Peter Frederick via Mercedes wrote: Finally got the new rear wheel bearing in the Golf tonight. We were experiencing at least one felt quake per day, sometimes four or five, for a couple of years. Once the government put a hold on the use of the three or four disposal wells in the area, the quakes stopped within a few weeks. It's been at least a year since they stopped, and we've only felt perhaps 4 or 5 since. Not proof, but very suspicious. I read that the idea that the lubrication is releasing energy that might have resulted in a much larger quake is false, that the lube actually increases the likelihood of larger quakes - some geologist somewhere (it's been too many years ago). I'm for the banning of waste water disposal wells - there are other ways to handle it, including cleaning it for re-use. They just cost more. Re: [MBZ] Guaranteed to go 1 million miles
Indiana had “safety” inspections annually some years ago. A sticker/inspection was $4.00, and it had to be done by a licensed mechanic. If you were lucky and knew someone you could pretty much just hand them the $4 and walk out with your sticker. The alternate to that was going in and getting some jerk who would find every little thing you could think of wrong with the car, wanting to screw you over for the repairs and send you on your way. If you challenged them they would refuse the inspection and you’re stuck with a writeup that you have 30 days to correct, or else. I just know I got my chops busted by a guy when I was in high school and he wrote a complete novel on my car, which happened to be in pretty good shape. I showed it to my Dad along with the estimate for the repairs and he tore both of them up. I believe I went somewhere else and got it passed. -D > On Dec 4, 2018, at 3:03 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > Inspections are a total racket set up for repair shops. > > I used to have to get inspections in Massachusetts and Texas, and they would > always find something wrong that they could then "repair." Re: [MBZ] Guaranteed to go 1 million miles
Inspections are a total racket set up for repair shops. I used to have to get inspections in Massachusetts and Texas, and they would always find something wrong that they could then "repair." I remember once taking the 79TD to get its inspection, and the guy failed it for insufficient brake fluid. I had just filled it the day before, having checked the car over for various things I figured they would jump on. Massachusetts was even worse, those guys were vicious because they knew there was absolutely nothing you could do about their scams. --FT On 12/4/18 2:37 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: Same is true in MD, where one car in 100 passes inspection - even new ones. Thanks. The article I read said it was blue food coloring in the candy that did it. If it wasn't the cotton candy that's the color of Blue Ice, the police mistake would be more understandable. What's absolutely not understandable or excusable is her spending more than 24 hours in jail after they got the official lab results. And then you've got the whole 4th Amendment issue where it appears they had zero probable cause to suspect it was illegal in the first place, unless the idiot volunteered her cotton candy for testing. Actually, voluntary seizure is probably what happened now that I think about it. I bet she doesn't do that again. "What's in the bag, drugs?" "It's just cotton candy" "Then you won't mind if we check it" "Get a warrant" Being rude to a "public servant" is better than spending 3 months in jail. [MBZ] OK Earthquakes Lawsuit settled
3 oil companies agree to settle Okla. lawsuitPublished: Tuesday, December 4, 2018 Three oil companies have reached a settlement with plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit over damaging earthquakes in central Oklahoma. The companies — Spess Oil Co., Equal Energy US Inc., and Fairfield Oil and Gas Corp. — have not admitted to any liability but have agreed to put $925,000 into a settlement fund. The lawsuit argues that saltwater disposal well operations led to 2011 earthquakes near the Oklahoma town of Prague. Attorneys say the fund is subject to court approval, and a January hearing is scheduled to consider approval of the settlement. Another defendant, New Dominion LLC, is not included in the agreement. The plaintiffs' attorney, Scott Poynter, says the company is pursuing an appeal before the Supreme Court of Oklahoma. *— Associated Press* ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

At high speeds the vacuum in the cylinder(s) is sucking it out. At least that’s what’s suggested in a number of places I saw references to the problem. However, I find this a bit weird, since if the head gasket is failing I would expect pressure to escape as well, meaning your cooling system would be pressurized and you would see some signs of oil or combustion gasses in the coolant as well. -D > On Dec 4, 2018, at 9:33 AM, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes > wrote: > > It’s a 2.5. If you have a limited number of posts you might not be able to see everything. I know there are some restrictions placed on new members for stuff like this. Their search feature has been hosed for some time. It seems to work now, but you can accomplish the same thing in the Google by using search terms like “BenzWorld R129 suspension sphere” or something to that effect. Just do a google and include “Benzworld” and the chassis number and it will search their forums for you. PM me your user name. You don’t say what engine is in the car, but the 2.5 liter engines are known for head gasket leaks that only manifest themselves at highway speeds. After a highway run and a low reservoir I would be sniffing the exhaust for coolant. -D > On Dec 4, 2018, at 8:58 AM, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes > wrote: > > I’ve been sorting this 2004 Outback and I’ve been struggling a little with > the cooling system. And from the TV clip from the officer's camera, the candy was pink, not blue. But then my eyes may not be what they used to be. My point is that if you intend to put someone in jail, the police should be at least close to 100% certain they have the right person. Otherwise, let them go. [MBZ] Cooling System Question on a Vehicle that validates I like Girls
I’ve been sorting this 2004 Outback and I’ve been struggling a little with the cooling system. When I bought it from a 23 year old dude called Warren, the coolant was barely in the filler neck and the reservoir was empty. On the test drive I heard the water sloshing sound behind the dash which I reckoned was a poorly filled and vented/burped system. I drove it 23 miles home, thru town, temp remained perfect but I could hear sloshy slosh periodically. When I got home the coolant was still in the filler neck and the reservoir was empty. I filled the reservoir to the correct level. Next morning, levels good, still heard sloshyness and I took off on my 40 miles freeway drive to the old nuke plant. Set the cruise to 78. Temp held perfect. When I went off the cruise in preps to exit, the temp climbed to almost hot. I shut it off to be safe. I let it sit for 15 minutes and, upon starting, was at the hot hash mark (not red) but, in 10 seconds, it dropped to almost normal. I drove the last 8 miles with it fluctuating between half and 3/4 temp. Came out 10 hours later to drive home and checked level...coolant in the neck and none in the reservoir. Placed the reservoir at correct level and drove home on the back roads (top speed 60, lots of speed changes, many stop signs) and temp never moved off of half. Checked level post CrossFit and it was in the neck but none in the reservoir. (Oh, and there are no leaks anywhere) So I place the reservoir at the correct level and proceeded to drive it for two days...around town and two 25 mile trips on the freeway and temps and levels stayed perfect. I checked level last night and the levels were perfect. Drove on the freeway to work this morning and, when I slowed down to exit, it got hot. Shit. I let it cool off and drove it the last 8 miles in. I checked level when I got to the parking lot, and the reservoir is FULL. Jeez. WTF. It has 92k miles, so I suspect that it sat for some time. Subaru recommends belt replacement and bearing inspection. So I guess it's not maintenance failure unless the belt is original. Most indys recommend you replace it all, because the fact the bearing feels smooth after one belt doesn't mean it will last through the second belt change interval. Word to the wise: replace the idler when you replace the stupid cheapa$$ timing belt. I was told that when I got my first VW Wabbit (with a trashed head because the stupid cheapa$$ timing belt broke) Same advise for serp belts, especially if you travel in not so good areas (or freeways in big cities, but That is being redundant) Rick Knoble via Mercedes wrote on 12/3/18 11:44 PM: Mitch inquires: Bearing failure or maintenance failure? Re: [MBZ] no cranky 87 td
You still need to buy and install a reman or new starter. Strong work on the rest. I carry about 29-30" of half inch copper pipe in the 240D. It works to whack the solenoid, and also to jump the solenoid. Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes wrote on 12/3/18 11:20 PM: Finally got a hammer down there to bang on it. That did the trick! Fired right up. Man the new brakes are awesome. Of course the claw on the hammer pulled the transmission and vacuum shutoff lines off the injection pump, so after I drove the front end up on the leaning towers of lumber pyramid scheme, it wouldnt shut off. Headlight bulb is now out on the left side, and my glass is all pitted anyway. I thought I had new hella lenses coming from Latvia but apparently they want a bank transfer or something. Passenger seat is all recovered after epic sessions with the instrument panel removal tool and a million little white clips. Just need to cut some holes in the cover for headrest and arm rest, which has me measuring twice and cutting once. I will drop this seat onto the drivers side adjuster, then pull my old drivers seat to swap the non memory motors into sportline frame #2 I got a seat heater harness out of Russia, so that will have to go in sometime with a new console wood. Water to air setup is pretty much together. It will get welded into the intake after some creative amputation with the table saw. I am trying to find some thin little curved radiators to fit under the bumper cover. The yzf1000r radiators are the only curved ones I know of, but they are curved a bit too much I think. No air to air as I am keeping the ac. Got some sportline rear shocks out of the fatherland. There were only 3 left. Tried to find the Sachs part number but nothing listed. I think it was discontinued long ago. The regular s124 ones are still obtainable from Sachs in a couple of flavors fyi. Oh yes and the air no longer blows hot for some reason. Need to sort that out. Joys of old car ownership. At least the s123 is fully sorted. Man that thing is just nice. They should all get the new steering box, new head, new turbo and new transmission treatment. About the only things not new are the halfshafts and rear subframe bushings. Maybe a 15" wheel upgrade and Gen 2 126 brakes would be nice. Thanks to everyone who chimed in about the w124 no start. Thinking of replacing the neutral safety switch on general principal. Bushings are quite loose. Re: [MBZ] no cranky 87 td
Bravo! Now add "new solenoid" or new starter to your shopping list. You may be able to get more life from this starter / solenoid by disassembly and cleaning (note that the solenoid inner workings don't get grease or oil, they are supposed to be dry). Bosch makes the solenoids, they can be sourced separately. I found one online, it was billed as a BMW part and had the wrong terminal (male blade for a push-on connection) but I was able to make it work with some creative solution. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, Dec 4, 2018 at 12:21 AM Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Finally got a hammer down there to bang on it. Finally got a hammer down there to bang on it. That did the trick. Fired right up. Of course the claw on the hammer pulled the transmission and vacuum shutoff lines off the injection pump, so after I drove the front end up on the leaning towers of lumber pyramid scheme in preparation for starter removal, it wouldnt shut off... Man the new brakes are awesome. I can absolutely recommend the dual diaphragm r129 booster, 500e master cylinder, 500e aluminum fronts and 600sl rears. The car had late model wagon calipers and stock 87 booster on it before, 294mm dual piston ate fronts. These new are the biggest that will fit under a 16" r129 wheel, with 300mm rotors. I was worried my el cheapo stoptech cryo rotors would have some terrible stopping properties, and the old single booster required serious leg muscles, so I wasnt sure if I had a pad and rotor issue or a pressure issue, but it turned out to be the latter. The car stops RIGHT NOW but still has modulation. I havent pushed it to fade again yet, but its nice to know I can put my wife in it and have it behave like her bmw x5d with m brakes used to - before it died at 8000 miles. I guess it stopped better than it went also! Epidemic. Headlight bulb is now out on the left side, and my glass is all pitted anyway. I thought I had new hella lenses coming from Latvia but apparently they want a bank transfer or something. Tempted by LED retrofit bulbs, but I have no idea what the pattern is on those. Do they blind oncoming traffic? What would Daniel Stern do... Got 2 of the last 3 w124 sportline hydroshocks aus der faterland. Maybe should have purchased the spare also. I wonder if sachs will rebuild them in a pinch? Also lubed the brake pedal so it no longer squeaks at the pin and threw in a new brake light switch. I agree with whoever said w123 cars just keep going. Hope same is true for this one once it is all sorted out. Next up: starter, then subframe bushings for everything. Does anyone know how to tell a worn subframe bushing by looking at it? I have a v8 subframe to swap in and the bushings all look pretty new. Prob best to swap on general principle.
