Re: [MBZ] OT Superfast charging - Might want to keep a safe distance from your car

2018-12-14 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
A fill up with hydrocarbon fuels takes at most five minutes and you get far
more than 100 kilometers of range. This Quack Charge scam would require a
driver to vacate the freeway every 60 miles or hour and take a five minute
break. Because, of course, the electrons dispenser will be busy, charge time
is 180 seconds, but getting out of the car and futzing around with couplings
will take more time.

They may as well just set up a platoon of electron dispensers at each rest area
along the interstates. Most of those are spaces at 30-60 mlle intervals. And
the kids can hop out and hit the head, look at the tourist maps and local
information kiosk while everybody waits for a free charging spot.

Just like the study about DDT was based on falsified data -- the people
who were feeding the birds took the calcium out of the birds' diet so
they would have thinner shells, so it's no wonder the study found the
birds' eggs had thinner shells.

I had to get one for the FL POS 300D, and the only place was from the
dealer.   They gave me a price over the phone when I ordered, of
something like $16 out the door.   Crazy high for a little chunk of
plastic.  When it came in they tried to charge me something like $30 for
it.   In the end I got it for the original price, but it cost me another
30-45 minutes.

During the blowout sales at the end of 2016, I was trying to get a MD dealer to
lease me a Spark EV and register it in Oregon. Deal fell through when they
refused to do it without an Oregon driver's license.

With a 76 mile commute, 80 miles if I go out to lunch, I figured it would be
hard on the battery, and probably impossible in the snow, if I couldn't charge
at work. The good news is that the city government put a free Level 2 charger a
block away from work in the summer of 2016. I could have plugged in for the
morning, and then gone and fetched the car at lunchtime so I didn't hog the
charger all day. Figured I'd get 2/3 of my commuting power for free that way.

Turns out it was a good thing I didn't get the car, because by the fall of
2017, the city charger was wrapped in yellow police tape and taken out of
service. I don't know if it broke and nobody wanted to pay to fix it, after
paying to install it, or if they got tired of paying the electric bill for the
two Volts and the Leaf I occasionally saw parked there. Last time I was there
in August, it was still shut down, so I guess it's gone for good.

Mitch.

Rock usually has the best prices and have closeouts with good prices,

they stock Bosal exhaust for the 123 Dissels.

If it's a Tesla Supercharger, I believe it's included in the price of your S or
X series Tesla. I'm not sure what sort of arrangement you get if you buy a
Model 3. And I don't know if there's a J1772 connector for people with more

The pictures of the Remy alternators might say Bosch Made in UK on the

Re: [MBZ] back

2018-12-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Welcome back, Allan!

Here’s my list:

Dealer (if you can get a good discount)
FCP Euro
Importec
Rock Auto

I waffle around on the last three, as you can shop them all and find better
deals at one or the other depending on what you’re buying and how much. For
example:

Rock Auto has closeouts on parts pretty regularly, so if you subscribe or
bookmark the feed for your car(s) you can see when they put stuff on special or
have a special closeout. Rock Auto is known to buy up distressed inventories,
so if you pay attention to these and are quick to respond, you can often get
some seriously good deals. They often have name brand filters, like Mann, on
discount. Cardone is a brand they have for brake parts, among other things,
that I’ve used with success when I’m watching the budget.

Importec does a good job but can be spotty as to the coverage for different
models, or so I’ve found. They often will offer an OE part and a sub-quality
brand like URO as an alternative, with nothing in between. That’s not a choice.

FCP Euro has a good depth in brands and won’t carry junk brands like URO. That
being said, they do occasionally have Meyle, which can be hit or miss as a
reboxer of part in some circumstances. They also have free shipping on orders
over $50, which I use them for to save a buck when I’m not in a hurry for
something. If it’s in stock even with free shipping the order usually goes out
within a day. FCP Euro also has their lifetime guarantee on everything. I
recently had someone tell me they sent used motor oil back to FCP Euro in the
original containers, and they shipped replacements!

I believe Importec has free shipping above a certain amount as well, but I
think it’s higher, like $75.

And as for buying parts at the dealer, I know it can get expensive, but I was
having a conversation about this with a finnie friend the other day, and they
made a very astute observation:

“Whenever one can get original parts, one should- regardless of cost. The time
to buy good parts isn't when you need them- it's when they're available.”

Welcome back!

Another parts source to check is Rock Auto, but be careful what you order. Many
times parts are re-boxed, so the description of the maker needs to be checked
against the picture of the part. I've found the pictures are more accurate.

2018-12-14 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
The only way I can see this working is if the MWs are pulsed in such a way that
they distribute the timing of the pulses throughout the power cycle of the
piston. That would carry the idea of the dual spark plugs per cylinder in my
M112 engine to a logical conclusion of a nearly infinite number of ignitions
and sustantially increase the energy throughput.

I agree that it's hard to see how that would benefit an OM engine.

And why a Wankel made of Aluminum and Iron can never approach the efficiency of
a piston engine made with the same materials, the Wankel has too much internal

could this be a scam looking for investors to fill their bank with cash
so they can then disappear?  Seems risky when getting involved with the
securities organizations around the world.  But once they get the cash
they might find their technology isn't as advanced as they say?

To me it doesn't seem very complex to be a scam.  I would hope anyone
investing would see that low temp=low combustion=higher emissions -
afterall, isn't that the whole reason we've been seeing cat. converters
on gas powered cars - raise the temp to lower emissions?  But then,
sometimes someone finds a new way to do things and people say, "Gee, why
didn't I think of that"?

I wonder why MWI didn't want to make a statement?  I would think if they
are soliciting investors they would have Press Releases ready to go...

There are also six airbags and 11 speakers, and Aviar says owners can
order an external speaker to generate the sound of an original Ford

However,

Unfortunately Aviar is yet to get around to building an actual R67, which

I'm trying to figure out this approach. Are they claiming that they get
complete combustion at a lower temperature? How would that be beneficial?
If less of the fuel's energy is lost as heat, that could increase the

[MBZ] Porsche effort to save combustion engines

2018-12-14 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
EMISSIONSEx-Porsche CEO aims to save combustion engine from scrapheapPublished:
Friday, December 14, 2018

As tightening emission rules force the car industry to embrace battery
power, a German startup says it has the technology to give the combustion
engine a reprieve.

Using pulsed microwaves to ignite fuel rather than spark plugs or glow
plugs, the engineers behind MWI Micro Wave Ignition AG say they can cut
consumption of gasoline and diesel by as much as 30 percent, and emissions
by as much as 80 percent, because the fuel burns at a lower temperature.

The company based in the small Black Forest town of Empfingen has won some
powerful backers. Among its shareholders is Wendelin Wiedeking, the former
chief executive officer of Porsche AG credited with reviving the iconic
German sports-car maker.

MWI has mandated Macquarie Capital to look for a buyer and international
partner that can help to promote the new system and increase MWI's
financial firepower, according to people familiar with the matter. The
company has begun talks with large automakers from South Korea and China,
one of the people said.

MWI declined to comment.

Wiedeking and a group of other private investors own about 20 percent of
MWI, which is controlled by its founders, Armin and Volker Gallatz.

"I am convinced that MWI is a disruptive innovation with a huge market
potential," Wiedeking was cited as saying in a document shared by MWI.

More efficient engine technology could keep traditional cars on the road
for longer, shoring up industry profits as automakers spend heavily to ramp
up production of electric vehicles in coming years. Several manufacturers
are still investing in better combustion engines.

MWI's pitch is that it can be integrated into existing engine architecture
rather than requiring an all-new approach.

[MBZ] OT Superfast charging - Might want to keep a safe distance from your car

2018-12-14 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
ELECTRIC VEHICLESBMW, Porsche boast 3-minute charging joltPublished:
Friday, December 14, 2018

BMW AG and Porsche unveiled a charging station that can jolt electric
vehicles with enough power to drive 100 kilometers (62 miles) in less than
three minutes, pushing ahead of Tesla Inc. in the race to make
battery-powered cars more convenient.

The ultra-fast prototype charger has a capacity of 450 kilowatts, more than
triple Tesla's Superchargers. Test vehicles developed to take that much
power were recharged to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes. Tesla's stations
need about 30 minutes for a similar charge, according to its website.

Carmakers, developing a wave of electric models to keep up with tightening
carbon emissions regulation, are under pressure to overcome consumer
turnoffs like slow charging times and patchy infrastructure. With demand
remaining tepid, BMW, Daimler AG and Porsche parent Volkswagen AG are also
building a fast-charging network along major highways in Europe.

The super-powered charging point was developed by a consortium comprising
the two German car brands, engineering giant Siemens AG, and charging
specialists Allego GmbH and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH. The station in
Bavaria was opened to the public on Wednesday. It's free to use for
existing models, BMW said yesterday in a statement.

One drawback — the charger offers more power than current models can take
on. The BMW i3 limits its power intake to 50 kilowatts, while the
battery-powered iX3 will triple that to 150 kilowatts when it rolls out in
2020.

For the test vehicles to withstand the full electricity surge, Porsche used
a cooling system that keeps battery cells at a steady temperature, while
the charging cables were cooled too. Siemens provided a higher electric
voltage energy supply to test the limits of the power jolt. *— Chris
