I used to use 5w-40 in my 240D's but local wally's no longer carries it. I
use15w-50 in my OM617 300CD.
My E320 (m272) uses 0w-40 MI.

I could tell the difference in the SDL.  I used the thin oil in the
winter.  (5w-40)M1 and the 15W-50 in the warmer weather.  oil pressure
was lower at idle, oil consumption went up with the thin stuff, but it
started easier at -20ºF.

Its easy to say light oil won't do whatever but I'm specifically saying in most

Well, the long haul guys say that fleets use it, and if you buy a used
fleet truck, to avoid the rotella, as it works well enough for the half
million or so miles the fleet will put on the truck, but you will pay
for a major.  If you buy from a fleet that used delo or delvac, the
engine will last longer, like another half million in most cases.  YMMV,
but thats the talk around truckstops.

Will it be a big difference though? 5%, 10%? At what point does that mean you
*need* thicker oil?
Also remembering that most of us don't run the engine at 100% output very much,
with a 240D you come close but still not all the time. For example when I'm
running the groomer it works 100% all the time and I have to vary the load to
keep moving, fortunately its cold out so its relatively easy keeping the engine
cool.
As people usually point out oils today are wy better than what was
available when the cars were new, M1 5w40 gives more protection against high
temps than dino 20w50 which was "good enough" for years and years.
Its also worth mentioning that M1 15w50 was only CF (I think) rated and today
carries no certification (or didn't last I knew) because Mobil didn't want an
old cert on their oil. Turbo Diesel Truck is (again my memory is soft) CI-4 (or
better) rated...

I disagree.

That's like saying a W123 diesel doesn't need an oil cooler when it's
cold outside, so it doesn't need an oil cooler (which the Benz engineers
have included in the car).

Your oil's temperature will be higher the hotter the ambient temperature.

We once had many squirrels, but since a small hawk moved into the neighborhood,
we see very few. I seem to remember reading about foxes and other animals that
dive into the snow and catch rodents. I wonder if artic foxes have ever been
tried in New England for squirrel control?

Or you could replace all twelve lifters with new from Ina, for about $150 or
so. Probably improve compression.

Another couple items that probably need attention: ALDA seals, ALDA adjustment,
turbo waste gate adjustment, timing chain.

Replace all the lifters, get the boost and ALDA set up correctly, IP timing
back in spec, you'll have a real rocket ship.

Thick oil makes this worse. Synthetic oil has far better flow

ago) and helps in this case.

Oil is not only a lubricant but also plays a very important roll in cooling
the engine internals, and for cooling you want a high flow rate. Thinner
oil will flow faster, provide better cooling.

0W-40 is the best of both worlds, for diesel. I use 0W-30 in SWMBO's
Infiniti gasser motor. That is at over 250k miles and doesn't burn a drop.

Re: [MBZ] M1 oel deals?

2019-03-18 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
When the ambient temps are at and above 100F, a lighter than 50 weight oil
would not keep the oil pressure up at idle when the engine was fully warmed
up. 15W-50 synthetic was great in the OM61x and OM60x engines I had. So, if
the temps get high, you need heavier oil. If the temps get low, you need
lighter oil. If they swing to both extremes, you need multi-weight that
covers both ends.

2019-03-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Probably normal, especially if you've done a couple starts in the process.
Quite likely your new oil is cleaning some schmoo out of the engine. I'd do an
oil analysis at maybe 2,000 miles, find out whats going on in there. Be
prepared to change the oil early. My '85 190D did that after my mechanic botched
a delivery valve seal job. He started the car repeatedly and one lifter failed
to pump up, took a couple days of driving before it went back to normal.

In a 61x engine 0w40 is hard to keep IN the engine. At least it was in my '83
240D. That car leaked 5x as bad with 0w40. It started more easily but was
costing me an extra quart of oil a week to keep going. 5w40 leaked way less and
started nearly as well.

I'd say 5w40 is the sweet spot, especially for older engines that see some
cold. At anything above freezing 15w50 is probably fine and provides higher
sheer strength. I don't think its any "better" because engine oil is most of
the time "good enough" and doesn't benefit from being "better". Most of us
don't run in real extreme conditions...

Re: [MBZ] M1 oel deals?

A person used to be able to purchase it in the diesel oil section, the 20/50.
Then is seemed to go missing form the shelves, and I only found 15-50 no matter
who made it, be it dino or synth. All of a sudden it showed up on shelves
again but in the special motor bike section with a price twice that of car M1
15-50, or other weights.

2019-03-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
My '95 does. The '87 did not, had to fabricate a converter from a
Crutchfield pigtail that you sent me (fit the '87 wiring harness) and the
pigtail that came with the radio.

The '87 also has the fader roller in the center console to deal with.

Re: [MBZ] W124 Correct Radio

2019-03-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Ask Becker? http://beckerautosound.com/

I've tried two different Continental radios. They are nice and simple, and
look correct.

https://www.continental-automotive.com/en-gl/Trucks-Buses/Interior-Cabin/Infotainment/Radios

I've got a Continental CD7416UB_OR radio in my '87 wagon now, it has
bluetooth and a CD player. Had it for a few years, works fine. User
interface (programming) is rather clunky, "made in china", but the radio is
pretty simple and looks good, does what I need with no swimming fish or
tiny illegible buttons. Bought it from these guys:
http://www.egauges.com/category-s/33233.htm

Previously I had a Continental TR7412UB-OR, but it malfunctioned after
about 6 months. The radio lost sensitivity and could hardly pull in any
radio stations. The bluetooth part worked fine. I tried to get a warranty
replacement from the German store sold it to me, but they ultimately
refused to honor the warranty. We had email exchange, they said they'd
replace it just mail it in, but then when I sent it from the US of A
apparently they had to pay a big customs fee to get the dead radio, they
declined to do that and stopped answering my emails. Dead radio was
shipped back to me.

I would try another TR7412UB-OR, I don't need a CD player, but I'd find a
seller here in the US of A that would honor a warranty return if I had
trouble.

I don't think I've ever seen M1 20w50...  I forget where you are but if the
car starts okay at your temps then I'd suggest its fine. A 61x will never be
able to go long OCI due to soot levels unless you filter for soot specifically
which probably isn't worth it on a car not being driven big miles. The last
240D I had I used M1 15w50 in the summer and M1 5w40 in the winter. The 240D
before that leaked oil really bad so it got the cheapest 15w40 I could find but
got changed at 3,000 miles or so...

Angie put solar powered lights on the trees in our backyard, think Christmas

to eat the wires so we've got these lights with sections that work and some

Apparently shrink wrap is tastier than the insulation as they ate almost all of

NEW ENGLANDSquirrel boom does a number on maple syrup operationsPublished:
Friday, March 15, 2019

Maple syrup producers have more than the weather to worry about. Frenetic
squirrels are chomping on equipment, crimping the flow of sap at some
operations.

Damage from wildlife — deer, bear woodpeckers and squirrels — is not
unusual for maple producers, but this year an abundant population of
squirrels is disrupting plastic sap tubing and spouts at some sugaring
operations in New England.

That means producers must go out into sometimes deep snow to find and
replace the damaged lines that transport the sap from the maple trees or
other chewed or missing equipment, which producers say can be
time-consuming and expensive.

"Occasionally they declare war. And it seems like they have this year,"
said Ruth Goodrich of Goodrich's Maple Farm in Danville, Vt., the largest
maple-producing state.

The boom in the squirrel population is mostly tied to an increase in food
source, such as acorns and other mast from trees, said Mark Isselhardt,
maple specialist with the University of Vermont Extension. But the
squirrels aren't causing problems for all producers, he said.

The varmints haven't been any worse than normal this year for Bascom Maple
Farms in Alstead, N.H.

"We haven't had a lot of snow cover," said Bruce Bascom. "We've only got
about a foot of snow here. I think the squirrels are not having that hard a
winter."

But Lyle Merrifield of Gorham, Maine, said he's had to fix about 60 spots
in his operation damaged by the chomping critters.

The trouble is the squirrels could take one bite of tubing and move another
100 feet, where they could take another bite, making the damage hard to
find, said Merrifield, who is president of the Maine Maple Producers
Association.

"I've heard a lot of people talk about squirrel damage, so it's probably
the worst we've seen, combined with the deep snow, just that combination,"
he said.

There's no way to completely control the squirrels, Isselhardt said. *—

Hide a modern radio under the seat, get one that has a remote and bluetooth,
no one need know its there...

Thanks, Dwight! Wish I could somehow get the car to the Chowdah Q….

I currently have two radios in my possession, however, neither is complete, so
I’m sort of in limbo on the subject.

I have the original radio that was installed in the car, a Blaupunkt Köln TR de
Luxe, but no mounting plate or faceplate. The radio also needs to be rebuilt
($400.00).

I have a Becker Europa TG, also a tube type radio of the correct vintage that
seems to be working, but again, no mounting hardware or faceplate.

The faceplates and mounting hardware for both radios are difficult to come by
and expensive when they can be found. I have considered going with a modern
retrofit (horrors!!) or just trying to scrounge a complete radio of the correct
vintage. Worst case scenario, I’ll get the Blaupunkt rebuilt and pay out the
butt for a faceplate and mounting plate. However, as the presence of a radio or
lack thereof does not prevent me from enjoying the car, this is not a high
priority - the cost to get the ones I have to a functional state is also a
deterrent from pursuing this approach.

Along those same lines, if anyone out there might have a suitable (complete)
radio or the parts I’m looking for, please PM me with what you’ve got. It’s
getting to the point where I am starting to feel like I have an Okie Acres
collection of radios, none of which are complete enough that I can actually
have a working radio out of the collection as a whole.

I currently have two radios in my possession, however, neither is
complete, so I’m sort of in limbo on the subject.

I have the original radio that was installed in the car, a Blaupunkt Köln
TR de Luxe, but no mounting plate or faceplate. The radio also needs to be
 rebuilt ($400.00).

I have a Becker Europa TG, also a tube type radio of the correct vintage
that seems to be working, but again, no mounting hardware or faceplate.

The faceplates and mounting hardware for both radios are difficult to come
by and expensive when they can be found. I have considered going with a
modern retrofit (horrors!!) or just trying to scrounge a complete radio of
the correct vintage. Worst case scenario, I’ll get the Blaupunkt rebuilt
and pay out the butt for a faceplate and mounting plate. However, as the
presence of a radio or lack thereof does not prevent me from enjoying the
car, this is not a high priority - the cost to get the ones I have to a
functional state is also a deterrent from pursuing this approach.

Along those same lines, if anyone out there might have a suitable
(complete) radio or the parts I’m looking for, please PM me with what
you’ve got. It’s getting to the point where I am starting to feel like I
have an Okie Acres collection of radios, none of which are complete enough
that I can actually have a working radio out of the collection as a whole.

BZZZT! Wrong!

This one’s a keeper. Only way I would let it go after all the work I’ve put
into it is if I found a much nicer one for a similar price…I really don’t want
to do all of this over again. I enjoy it, but it’s a major undertaking.

Thanks, Dwight! Wish I could somehow get the car to the Chowdah Q….

I currently have two radios in my possession, however, neither is complete, so
I’m sort of in limbo on the subject.

I have the original radio that was installed in the car, a Blaupunkt Köln TR de
