CNC operators/techs and robot programmers/service techs will do well. The
community college here is trying to create them for the big manufacturing

the raw material is lacking among the local populace.

Higher education is being wasted on making and keeping the unemployable
illiterati population expand so that college teachers can keep raking in a
cheque. They do not expand on the knowledge base in any appreciable manner.
Just seem to build a larger class of indoctrination spewers who pollute the
minds of people who could be making their nations great once more, or still.

The talentless will not gain talent by studying the arts, but by actually
performing their craft. Twisting history to suit your personal agenda will not
illuminate the past, but obscure the truth, leading to a loss of useful
knowledge for the future. Higher education should return to guilds so that
those who have actual valuable knowledge are able to pass it along to the next
providers of useful service to humanity.

[MBZ] BMW says electrification is overhyped, diesel engines have at least 20 more years

2019-06-27 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/bmw-says-electrification-is-overhyped-diesel-engines-have-at-least-20-more-years/ar-AADvwdY?li=BBnb4R7

Despite just participating in a flurry

of hyped, electrified car reveals
,
BMW isn't
convinced that the end is nigh for the internal combustion engine.

The diesel
engine still has oodles of time left in the world, and the shift to
electrification is overhyped, says the BMW Group board member for
development, Klaus Frohlich. A report from *Automotive News*

quotes Frohlich declaring that the diesel engine still has at least 20 more
years, and the gasoline engine, at least 30 years. Also, he toned down the
general rhetoric surrounding electric cars
 and their
impending takeover.

"The shift to electrification is overhyped. Battery-electric vehicles cost
more in terms of raw materials for batteries. This will continue and could
eventually worsen as demand for these raw materials increases," Frohlich
says. Needless to say, that kind of talk sounds a bit different than what
we hear from Tesla
 and other
electric car backers.

So even though BMW continues to say it's actively developing and pursuing
all-electric models, doubt remains. That is clear across the industry, as
everyone who produces electric cars struggles to make a profit selling
those vehicles. However, Frohlich did detail a few internal combustion
engines that don't appear to have a way forward.

The quad-turbo six-cylinder diesel

offered in Europe doesn't have a long shelf life, as Froelich declared it
too expensive and complicated to build. He says the most turbos we should
expect to see on a new BMW diesel

engine is three. What a shame, right? We kid, three turbos are plenty.
Another diesel engine on the outs is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder only
offered in Europe. Frohlich says that particular oil-burner is too
expensive to try and get it to comply with emissions standards.

An engine that'll hit home in America is the 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 found
in the top-level 7 Series
.
Frohlich didn't mince words when it came to that one.

"Each year, we have to invest to update the V12 to new emissions
regulations, particularly in China. And when the V-12 accounts for about
5,000 sales a year globally, this includes Rolls-Royce
, the cost
of these updates is several thousand euros per unit," Frohlich says.

BMW has previously committed

to keeping this engine around through 2023, at the very least in the U.S.
market. What happens after that is a discussion for another day.
Additionally Frohlich says BMW is working on a market case to keep its V8
gasoline engine around. That'll be paired with some form of electrification
in the future, though, specifically to deal with countries that have heavy
taxes added for high carbon dioxide output.

There are a few gals that #1 boy knows who did not need a ring to plump up.
They nailed down a fella and he had employment, the gals were “finding

This morning read an article from BBC about how Frod is cashing out 12k
employees ahead of brexit. The japanese are also chatting with the brits on
how to keep making cars there instead of just installing robots. There are a
great number of jobs that will be automated. SWMBA and her legal skills will
have to really step it up to remain relevant. There are ‘bots able to do her
work. The plumbers and electricians will remain well employed. Same with a
bunch of health workers. Like my physical therapist. That is not a job for a
robot

I have coffee with some old guys most mornings at McDonald's before I
come to the office. They are all retired. About a week ago, one of them
told us that his neighbour's son was killed the day before. He owned a
construction company (trucks, backhoes, loaders etc) and they were doing
a foundation repair on a building. He and 2 employees were down in a
trench laying re-bar for a concrete pour when the trench caved in. The
other 2 fellows jumped out but the business owner was buried. He was in
his 50's. He must have known better than to do that, but trades people
are often very careless. It becomes all about how quickly they can do a
job in order to make more money and they take chances that they ought
not to take. If it had been an employee that died instead of the owner,
he would likely have been fined tens of thousands by the workplace
safety department of the provincial government.

I’ll defer to others with more current knowledge, but I would suggest a
Mercedes C4 SD Connect system. I have a C3, which is hardwired via serial port,
but the C4 can do WiFi with the MUX, I believe.

I looked on Ali Baba and eBay. Ali Baba had some deals under $400-$500, but the
prices on eBay were stupid. Not sure what that’s about. Try your “BangGood”
guys and see if there’s anything there. You could also post a “want to buy” on
BW and see what you get, maybe someone has a C3 or C4 system they want to get
rid of.

Tell him to put his gf on the scales and see what she tips it at today.
I guarantee you if they move in together she will be 40lb more by this
time next year having realized she has caught the boy and does not need
to keep herself in good trim.  The boy will then be miserable as she
will be trying to run his life, and the situation will no longer be so

Choices:
Learn a trade, be in demand, work a trade that is totally portable to any
part of the country, earn a high income, never have student debt, get paid
while you learn as an apprentice.
or
Go to college, struggle to "find yourself" while incurring huge student
debt, have to pay off that student debt while seeking employment with your
degree in "Underwater Liberal Basket Weaving".

You are 18, you know everything, you have no listening skills, and you get
to live with the choices you make you decide.

Re: [MBZ] Cool Classic Cars That Are Perfect for a Collector on a Budget

2019-06-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I've got my granddaddy's 72 Datsun 510 wagon in storage. been sitting
for at least 30yr.  It's surprisingly straight, a few dings on the body
but not very noticeable.  It would need to be restored mechanically
quite a bit at this point, or really cleaned up anyway.

I have had good luck with the Focus. Oldest kid is driving it now, 2003
model, 210,000 miles and running like a top. I am quite sure that rust
is going to get it before the engine quits. I'd look at them again
before paying the premium prices for a Honda or Nissan. Hondas have such
a great reputation but the two that I've owned have been more trouble
than that Focus.

[MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 Air Conditioner Mystery

2019-06-27 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes

Hi All,
Yesterday I was working on my daughter's 2011 C300 w/75K changing oil, air
filters, flushed brake fluid etc. When I finished took it for a ride and the
air conditioner was not working.  Went to a local mechanic who checked the R134
and everything was normal.  This morning I was taking it back to the mechanic
to further troubleshoot when the air conditioner returned to normal???
It was very hot in the northeast both yesterday and today.  Took it out for
several trips this morning and still working great.
Curious if anyone else had this type of issue and what it could have been.
Thanks in advance.

I’m thinking I need to get one as I mess now with these “newer” cars. I would
appreciate your recommendation as I am lazy (though I have looked through those
BW posts) and you have experience. Paying someone (who is not Joe) would cover
some of the cost.

What I divined from the BW posts is that buying a HDD loaded with the software
and the Fancy Box with connectors from a chinee vendor is the way to go, then
buying the Special Flavor of laptop (some specific Compaq model if I recall) to
put the HDD in. I looked up those computers and found a bunch cheepcheep on
eBay.

2019-06-27 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I don’t recommend the SnapOn scanners for a first time user. As Mitch
mentioned, they have gaps in what data they can access and display, so you end
up not having visibility into some things. I have a SnapOn MTG2500 that I like
to take for inspections, as it’s easy to use and powered by the car, so I don’t
have to worry about getting power (necessary for the SDS.) However, it doesn’t
do everything the SDS does, so I lose some visibility with it.

There is a good but very long thread on the SDS clones on the BW R129 forum.

You can find a good clone with a laptop, cables and MUX (multiplexer) under
$500. If you plan on working on just about any MB from the early 90s through
late 2000s (2000-2010/12) the SDS is indispensable. You’ll wonder how you got
along without it once you have one.

I figure mine has paid for itself many, many times over in time saved and
confirmation of diagnoses.

I recommend you find 'Joe's Garage', where Joe is a guy who likes to buy tools
(I can tell you where to go in Bellevue Michigan, but that's about it), and see
if Joe will plug in his fancy scanner, select the appropriate year and engine

I strongly believe it'll clear all the transmission faults.
But it doesn't do EVERYTHING. For instance, I can clear airbag faults from a
late model GM car, but I can't clear crash data and make the SRS light go out.
The owner of the Ultra says the other Joe down the road has a better scanner
