What was the ultrasonic parts cleaner that you recommended a few years ago?

Re: [MBZ] Keys Benz content

2020-01-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There’s a little ring antenna thingie around the keyhole that reads the chip, I
guess it’s RFID, then the AAM decides its good and allows the car to start.
This has likely failed on the 05ML500 and won’t read the chip and let the fer
start. But it doesn’t work with the straight key either so I don’t know.

[MBZ] ML320 $750 ask

2020-01-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I went to look at this thing today. It was a POS. Not too high miles but just
beat. Guy bought it for his college daughter. Smelled like dope inside, dirty,
worn, stuff not working, paint bad, headlights totally hazed. POS but the body
was actually quite straight.

Guy said trans was intermittently not shifting into drive. Put the OBD reader
($4wifi unit, talks to free CarDoc app on my phone) on it and got a bunch of
codes, EGR, FI issues (exhaust smelled really rich), shifter sensor inop, trans
turbine speed sensor, etc.

Started and ran ok. The shifter wasn’t registering on the dash indicator so I
knew the stick sensor was bad. Wouldn’t go into gear.

I put the fancy computer on it, every system but the transfer case was showing
hard and soft failures. Basically backed up what the OBD reader said. I
couldn’t drill down into each system as this thing wants to use HHTWIN on the
older 163s to drill down, then it won’t see the systems and the HHTWIN app
crashes though DAS keeps running. Perplexing.

Turned the car on again and shifter was working, imagine that. Went into gear
ok. So I guess it was some intermittent fault in the shift sensor.

I offered the guy $300 for it. He said he could get that from a knacker, and
someone was coming Saturday with $500 so he couldn’t go less than that. Good
luck...

It would have been interesting for parts

there a streaming service that has all the local channels and features

plexus in a mold and jam the key down into it. Or do the same thing with
epoxy with some milled glass fibers or similar. Done.

I believe that could be done.   That would be a good way to go with the
carbon fiber filament. build a fixture onto the base plate that you
could clamp the key in, then hit GO for program #2.

Program 2 would be just an inverse of program 1.

you to put the metal key in place, then let the printer continue and make

Re: [MBZ] Keys Benz content

2020-01-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Well, it is probably not even a key, but an electronic code (RFID chip)
that the computer says will allow you to ASK the computer to start the
engine.   (or beg...)

But yes, 500 is in the range I have heard, PLUS programming from MB owners.

I'd be looking for a way to remove the "key" part of the ign switch, so
that you can turn the switch with some other method.  Like using a
screwdriver on MBs with real keys, after you remove the tumbler.   You
have to have one key to remove the tumbler on switches with real keys,
so I'd guess you have to have a key to remove the "tumbler" part of the
electronic request system.

Folks

I lost the key to my 2007 Kia Sedona. And the remote. I screwed around
and talked to some locksmiths etc who told me a bunch of lies and
bullshit Anyway, with some difficulty I got the key code for free from
Kia Country of Savannah Then I found a nearby locksmith who made me 2
keys for $50 which was too much, but they fit. These are NOT
transponder keys which I does not have. Has anyone tried to program a
$10 remote on a Kia? That is the next project

Now, since I have the 2004 Dodge [sprinter] with only one key, I
thought I’d look into getting a spare for that. I called the stealer
in Savannah and they will happily sell me a switchblade fob and key
for get ready for this $499. But wait, there is more THEN
you have to contract with the service Dept to get that programmed ...
I didn’t even bother to get a quote on that. They lost me at $500 for
a key.

Has anyone been here and done that? Either the Kia remote or a
sprinter transponder key?

For VWs at least up until my 2015 I send a picture of the existing key plus my
registration and driver's license to fixmyvw.com who sends me the key and fob.
My VCDS (programmer cable) can program Angie's 2005 Golf to recognize the fob
but I needed to borrow a different cable to get the secret code out of the car.
I haven't been able to figure out how to get additional keys for the 2015 Jetta

IL was famous for that for decades.   Also requiring an IL inspection on
any truck operating inside their borders.   Johnny'd sit at the end of
the bridge, and nap any truck entering the state.   No lack of brownie

when most people worked for 75¢ and hour.

There are good reasons why people have been fleeing IL for decades.

Different speed limits for trucks is something the Owner Operator
Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has been fighting for years.
It seems some "safety" organizations think heavy trucks going fast
is dangerous and try to convince lawmakers to have different speed
limits.

The R129, W163 and I believe even late W140 key fobs are affected by this issue
of availability.

The W211 keys are just as bad. I was going to get a spare for the eldest’s E320
CDI until my friendly dealer parts guy chuckled and told me what my cost was.
He said my reaction was nothing compared to that of consumers who come in and
want to buy one over the counter (list price).

Nope.

A 99 ML320 will have a key with a transponder chip in it. It should be a
“Mickey Mouse" key with a black plastic fob that has “ears” on it - unless it’s
just the key blade. If that’s the case, the car would crank but not start. The
straight key blade is only intended to unlock/lock doors.

I have both the “switchblade” fob and a Mickey Mouse key for the wife’s R129.
The fob will unlock the car at night, but not in the daytime as the IR stuff
much be so weak it can’t see the signal when there’s ambient light present.

This whole key business is complete BS. Apparently R129 keys are just now
becoming available in the US in some limited quantities, have been in yurp for
a few months. Spendy. I guess the IR lock part needs to be programmed at the
stealer. I think 210 and 163 keys are also quite spendy.

On the 05 ML500 I had to reprogram the recognition of the key (which has a
small chip of some sort in the housing) using the fancy computer to pair it to
the car then a sequence of key buttons presses. The car computer only has 8
keys (chips actually I think) it can recognize, I don’t think you can get a
duplicate of one you have had but a new key has to be paired against one of the
remaining codes the car will recognize. And of course the metal part needs to
be cut. The chip and metal key are apparently central to the thing actually
starting the vehicle. But the remote aspect does the (un)locking and that is
what the car listens for.

There are supposed programming things ($$$) on eBay that will (re)program a key
but reports suggest its hit or miss. Some locksmiths “might” be able to do it
with some fancy box but I don’t know.

I’m wondering if the 99 ML320 stuck in limp mode might have had a chipped key.
The 05 does but all I have for the 99 is a straight metal key, and I can’t get
the fancy computer HHTWIN program to talk to the car though a cheap WiFi OBD
reader will see some codes, so I’m not sure what the deal is with it. The
computer talks fine to the 99 E320, go figure.

I don't pay full attention since I don't have a 3D printer and do not
think I have enough use for one to venture into that area, but my
recollection is that they talk about heating a glass surface for the
first layers to bond to.

Disturbs the inmates if I’m up that early banging around. And it wouldn’t cool
off for some time into the evening.

Saturday I should be able to get up there before the sun comes up, however.
Youngest son blows out for work early, and I think oldest son is going out of
town. If he’s not up early he should be.

The truck drivers dislike split speed limits a whole lot more than
the cars do. Anytime there is a notable speed difference it's
less safe. It happens - but to deliberately cause it seems foolish.

Mixing speeds is dangerous in my opinion. I remember reading or hearing that
some majority of accidents occur when vehicles are in the bottom 20% or the top
20% of all the speeds driven. In other words try to keep an even flow, extremes
are dangerous.

IME PLA is easiest to print, but not too strong and may melt in a hot car
interior. ABS is stronger, but harder to print and may have objectionable
outgassing. I like PETG for moderate ease of printing, strength and appearance.
It is the stuff that soda bottles are made of.

Sure. Send me the files and I’ll knock them out.

Do understand that there are a wide range of materials available for 3D
printing. Look here:

https://smile.amazon.com/s?k=3d+printing+filament=2JF2L95MP97R2=3d+printing%2Caps%2C258=nb_sb_ss_i_2_11

Look down at the choices under “3D Printing Materials”. There are a number of
different materials to print with, all of which have different characteristics
depending on what you’re printing. The most common material is PLA, but it’s
probably not ideal for something like a key head. You can get filament that has
real wood in it to look wood grained, for example, along with all sorts of
other stuff.

print, which also affects print time substantially. Default settings in most of
the printing software is pretty rough, and if you don’t tune it, you’ll spend a
lot of time filing and trimming the finished product because it’s so rough.

I think there is quite a learning curve to make it work well too. I subscribe

to make the printers work well enough to produce useful parts or items.

Also - I use “Ultimaker Cura” as my file management/printing software. It’s
open source and well supported. A lot of what I’ve gained as far as
understanding how to make good prints came out of their support forums.

That’s quite true, too, Randy. More so if you’re doing things on your own, that
is, designing your own prints.

I found that by reading a lot of the notes with the files on Thingverse as well
as researching my printer in various online forums that I’ve got an idea of how
to print things consistently and that require a minimal amount of finish work.
A lot depends on the design itself, too.

Different speed limits for trucks is something the Owner Operator
Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has been fighting for years.
It seems some "safety" organizations think heavy trucks going fast
is dangerous and try to convince lawmakers to have different speed
limits.

*Nods* we give a drivers license to pretty much anybody who wants one. When I
was in Germany in the '90s the German kids my age were spending months in
drivers training at a cost of thousands of (1990s) marks.I went to driver's ed
which wasn't required and took, I think, 2 weeks of like 2 hours a day plus
maybe 4-5 hours in the car.

Its bonkers here, back in the early 2000s I'd see people pulled over all the
time. Now I drive a similar amount and almost never see a car pulled over. Much
of my commute is 4 lane highway at 55mph with most cars going 65 minimum and
many at 80.
I never thought I'd say this but we really need more enforcement, people slow
down (at least briefly) when they see a car pulled over...

I think the biggest negative about 3D printing is the time it takes to clean up
or finish a print. Most people think you just upload the file, turn the printer
on and go. A lot depends on how fine a line/resolution/layer you set up to
print, which also affects print time substantially. Default settings in most of
the printing software is pretty rough, and if you don’t tune it, you’ll spend a
lot of time filing and trimming the finished product because it’s so rough.

Absolutely for this part of the world, however, in the “winter” around here
when it’s in the 50s and 60s even on a sunny day the attic space isn’t bad at

I would second YouTube TV. It’s around $56/month with taxes or thereabouts, but
it’s got a wide range of programming, including your beloved Fox network, and
unlimited DVR capabilities. You just choose a show you want recorded and it
records it then puts the copy in your library.

Look down at the choices under “3D Printing Materials”. There are a number
of different materials to print with, all of which have different
characteristics depending on what you’re printing. The most common material
is PLA, but it’s probably not ideal for something like a key head. You can
get filament that has real wood in it to look wood grained, for example,
along with all sorts of other stuff.

Just saw a note from someone about car shipping on another forum I belong to.
They were looking for a shipper that could pick up a car and arrange for
storage for a couple of weeks at the destination. They ended up using CarMax.

Apparently CarMax will ship your car, not just a car you bought from them, and
give you up to two weeks free storage at their secure lot at the destination.
They didn’t say what it cost, but as a matter of convenience it sounded like it
worked out well for them.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sure. Send me the files and I’ll knock them out.

Do understand that there are a wide range of materials available for 3D
printing. Look here:

https://smile.amazon.com/s?k=3d+printing+filament=2JF2L95MP97R2=3d+printing%2Caps%2C258=nb_sb_ss_i_2_11

Look down at the choices under “3D Printing Materials”. There are a number of
different materials to print with, all of which have different characteristics
depending on what you’re printing. The most common material is PLA, but it’s
probably not ideal for something like a key head. You can get filament that has
real wood in it to look wood grained, for example, along with all sorts of
other stuff.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I got a printer courtesy of a credit card scam someone tried to accomplish on
my youngest son. His credit card got compromised and someone ordered two 3D
printers with it. The bank reversed the fraudulent charges and he thought that
was it, not knowing what they were for. A few weeks later two 3D printers show
up at the house from some company in Taiwan. He contacted the company and the
credit card people, and both of them said to keep them as I suspect it wouldn’t
have been worth it to ship them back.

He didn’t want them so I kept one and gave the other to a coworker’s dad who is
a retired aerospace engineer. I think it’s an Ender 3 or something like that.

You don’t really have to have any design abilities. Just go to Thingverse or
any number of other web sites that host 3D printer files and start searching.
The stuff you’ll find is amazing, and the materials to make them are relatively
cheap. There are a bunch of Mercedes related things on Thingverse.

I haven’t done anything significant with my printer, but it’s fun to tinker
with. Most of what I’ve made so far are enhancements for the printer itself.

Re: [MBZ] CHECK YOUR FUSES!

2020-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Record highs here this week, into the low 80s. Should be more like the low 70s.

Sucks because I need to get up in the attic to run network cabling and cables
for my new cameras. Not fun when it’s sunny and in the 80s.
