Shirley and I listen to Redeemer Broadcasting here at home (streamed over
the Internet). The fellow running it produces a program played on
Saturday mornings which covers various topics.

Last Saturday, it was an interview with a Chinese woman (now a U.S.
citizen) who grew up in Wuhan about the coronavirus situation.

The program's direct link is:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/redeemer-broadcasting-podcasts/apa/apa_020120_The_Coronavirus--Dr_Dana_Cheng.mp3

The synopsis of the program is

A Plain Answer: The Coronavirus - Dr. Dana Cheng
Air Date: 2/1/2020
The Coronavirus - Dr. Dana Cheng
Today we talk with the Senior Editor of China News for The Epoch
Times. She is originally from Wuhan and came to the United States to
earn her PhD and is now a citizen. We talk about the Coronavirus, that
originated in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in China. Wuhan has
a population of 11 Million people. Of concern to Dr. Cheng was the way
in which critical information about this highly contagious virus was
initially handled inside China. She says that the first time we heard
about the virus was December 8th. Some people inside China started to
post about the virus and they were arrested by the regime. Prior to
the city being locked down on January 23, there was some 40,000
families gathered together in a "pot luck" party - some 5 days prior
to the lock down. The Communist government did not communicate the
terrible dangers to the Chinese citizens. As of this writing, well
over 1000 people have been infected in Wuhan (and just under 10,000
worldwide). The numbers are growing so fast that you need to check a
reliable news source like The Epoch Times to learn the latest. Dr.
Cheng points out that some misinformed reports claimed that people
were eating bats and became sick, but she being from the area, sets
the record straight that people do not eat bats in Wuhan. And neither
does the virus appear to be associated with seafood. A very rough
estimate is that more likely, well over 100,000 people are infected.
Initially the Communist government was claiming that human to human
transmission was not a problem! This was an outright lie. The people
in China are not allowed free speech like we have here in the states.
One effort the Chinese government is working on is creating 100,000
beds in hospitals. This lends support to the 100,000 people infected
estimate. Another fact that we don't talk much about in this interview
is that the Wuhan Institute of Virology is in the area. This is
China’s most advanced virus research laboratory, but until we know
more about the real source of this virus, it would be too
conspiratorial to make further judgments about cause and effect links
to China's biowarfare program. Participants: Dr. Dana Cheng,
Dan Elmendorf.

[MBZ] 1982 240D motor/engine mount replacement

2020-02-03 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello everyone.
I decided to tackle the engine mounts on Hildegard. It took a bit of persuasion
to get the passenger’s side lower bolt loose, but after a little “rattle
wrench” action and some more ratcheting, it broke loose! Then, I was able to
jack up the engine and remove the heat shields with no problem. The cursing
began with the upper bolts. I got both driver’s side bolts out with the mount,
but the engine side bolt was quite fiddly. I was able to get it out little by
little with a wobble extension. I couldn’t find the 3/8“ drive u-joint
extension that my dad used, but I have one on the way in order to make the
passenger’s side MUCH easier.
When I get ready to button it up tomorrow, is there a proper way for the heat
shields to go in? There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they were
positioned other than not having the taller side toward the engine. The rear
mount behind the oil pan that mounts to the cross member was oil soaked, so I
have to order another one.

Re: [MBZ] OT cost of living in Seattle

2020-02-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
That is so sad.   Glad we got to see seattle in 1993, when we shipped
cars there to avoid lost angels.    Unfortunately, I'd guess Port of LA
may now be safer to pick up a car in, or to ship one out.  What we saw
in May was certainly not scary.   That was the san pedro part, to see
the BB-61.   A few homeless and panhandlers out at night, but nothing scary.

So tell me:  Up until 1970 or so, we had county homes or county farms.
The indigent and mildly nutty were housed there in exchange for whatever
help they could lend to maintaining the place. (growing food, work in
the kitchen, building, or grounds)   The true nut cases were in mental
institutes, with 3 hots and a cot.   We were told that was "cruel." and
they should be turned out into the streets by the so-cal justus
war-eoreiors.

Is it more cruel to keep indigents housed, fed, clothed, washed and
employed (to some extent) or to have them wandering the streets
panhandling and using whatever other means they come up with?
Is it more cruel to keep nutcases housed, fed and clothed and washed
etc, or to have them wandering the streets, and assaulting whoever they
feel like assaulting?

Which of these choices is more cruel to the taxpayers?

The homeless and insane are so bad, that fire fighters will not
respond to some addresses without full police escorts. Usual turn out
is four cruisers per engine because so many first responders were
being injured.

Not sure if it made national news, but last week there was a shoot out
on a downtown street corner (outside McD) Three or four shooters
(teens of color) firing into a crowd, killed a few people, injured
many more. Chronic drug dealing and people in deep crisis in that area
is so bad that businesses are closing and moving out because their
employees are to scared to come to work.

That $16 is not even enough to be thought of as hazard pay. My
youngest boy was making $16 for his 2018 summer job. Scared the piss
out of him so bad to work in town that he chose to work in ANC for
$8.85/hr instead.

Very few are economically disadvantaged residents. The invasion of the
unhoused are almost 80% new to the region, having heard that it is a sweet
place to live in anarchy, due to the socialist justice attitude of elected
officials. The cops stopped responding, knowing the amount of paperwork would
not result in any action. Persecutors just let the worst of humanity go with
no repercussions.

Check out the youtubes for “Seattle is dying”. That is state of the art for 18
months ago. It has gotten much worse.

There is ample housing being built. For the very wealthy who are able to
afford a million dollar 700 sqft condo in a highrise tower within blocks of
Amazon and Google offices. Not that it is actually safe for them to walk to
work with the nuts and flakes wandering the streets. Another neighbor works at
the River or Large Feminist and he takes a company bus the five miles to work
for his own safety. Told of some who live close to the hive talking of hiring
private security (armed) to escort them to work and back.

That is minimum wage there. Nobody who has that job is living in Seattle
itself, unless their home is a cardboard box. About $6 a day to ride the bus.
No available parking in town for less than $5/hr. Fuel is around $3.78/gal.
My neighbor rents his 600 sqft basement out for $1200/mo which is DIRT CHEAP
for Seattle. Looked as renting out my tiny home to be able to keep it as an
investment. Market rate would be just under $4k/mo without utilities. Current
year's taxes came to $11k.

My mother’s home, 30 miles out of town saw a 21% increase in property taxes and
value bump of around $48k in 2019. The area is becoming a one per center
haven, and the urban poor are moving out of town or into tents.

not as fatal according to the data presented here (like I believe it,
the number is likely much much higher, I doubt if the Chicomms are being
too honest here).  There now seems to be a fairly strict travel ban in
place both in China and the US, and other countries too I guess so that
is somewhat comforting.  Hong Kong has closed their border, which is
probably something they find ironic.

I'm guessing the Chinese economy is gonna tank fairly quickly, it will
be interesting to see how they deal with this.  The area where this got
started seems to be barely above third world conditions, which is not
likely to be helping much.

OK so I went out and jiggled the wire to the CPS and the car fired right
up and ran fine.  Maybe the sensor is going bad or the wiring/connector
are lose or something.  I guess I'll order another one, only $25, and
replace it.  Maybe put some dielectric grease in the connector too if
there was some water in there from the other evening.

On another accomplishment, I added a bit of oil to the SL and checked
the coolant, the light had been blinking on occasionally. It did not
look low but I guess I will add some tomorrow.  I also fixed a hood
latch which had not been catching well and being a PIMA, turned out the
little catch that holds the main catch in closed position was all
goobered up and would not close to catch the catch.  So some spray lube
and working it a bit got that back in order.  Sprayed the other one too,
all looks to be in ordnung now.

[MBZ] OT - Shingles Vaccine

2020-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got my follow up shot this afternoon. I’m “windmilling” the snot out of that
arm as often as I can. Might not alleviate the side effects much, but it will
be interesting to see how much my upper arm hurts tomorrow.

Pharmacist said the flu-like side effects don’t appear to be consistent among
patients from what she’s heard from people she’s given the vaccine to. She said
some get the first dose and not the second, vice versa or not at all. The dose
is identical for both shots, so it’s not like the dosage varies. She said she
thinks it might be a function of the person’s current condition relative to
their immune system.

Whatever. I just hope I don’t feel like dooky tomorrow like I did the last
time...

croaked, I just blocked the door open with a 2x4 block so my feet
didn't freeze.

My truck is a 2013 F150 Supercrew XTR. I think that model was made
between 2011 and 2014. In 2015 Ford changed the style and started to
produce the aluminum body truck. I did not check, but I don't think my
model started in 2010.

However, who knows what they changed along the way. I was looking at a
Consumer Reports magazine last Monday night in a book store at their
ratings for used trucks and noted that they said my model year suffered
more issues with the heating and cooling systems than other years so it
might relate to something like this. Who knows for sure? Did they change
the heater box in some manner, or did they start using cheaper plastic etc.

It might also be an issue caused by the weather. If the sun melted some
snow that dripped down into the fresh air intake and that water froze
and created an ice dam that prevented the plastic flap from opening and
closing properly, the plastic might have been over stressed and that may
have caused the nub that I found to break off. The problem may never
happen in California.

I was thinking that there might be some way to move that flap back and
forth without the original setup. An old style choke cable type setup
might allow one to push and pull the flap open and closed without doing
a tear down of the whole dash but, as I said earlier, I think I can
likely live with it as it is so, as long as more parts do not break off
and fall in, I will likely just leave it bee.

Re: [MBZ] OT followup on F150 blower noise

2020-02-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

what years would be made the same poor way?    So we know to avoid them.

Can you block it to just recirc?   That might be more useful in other
climes.    On the 126, when the vac operator for the up/down flapper
croaked, I just blocked the door open with a 2x4 block so my feet didn't

Randy Bennell via Mercedes
February 3, 2020 at 11:02 AM
I pulled the blower motor assembly out of my truck on Saturday
morning. We had some nice weather this weekend so it was warm enough
to do it outside. That was nice. Warm weather for us this time of year
was about 0 degrees C. Put cardboard down over the snow and used an
old sheet to protect me from getting really dirty as the running board
thing on the truck was filthy. I have been wanting to wash it for a
couple of weeks but the car wash I generally use is down for repairs
and if I wash it, it will be dirty before I can get it home. However,
I do like to wash off the layer of dirt even if it gets back on fairly
quickly.

Removal of the assembly is not too bad. 3 screws hold it in and only
one of them is difficult to get to. A ratcheting box end works well
but one with a flex head would be even better. After the screws are
out, it is still a bit of a wiggle job to get the unit out as the
carpet is is the way etc.

Once I had it out, I found a piece of plastic inside the squirrel
cage. It is about 3/4 in length and diameter and obviously broke off
of something in the heater box. Reaching in through the opening, I
find a flap/door that can be readily moved back and forth so I assume
this piece was what connected the door to the doodad that opened and
closed it. About that time, my mechanic son arrived and took a look at
it. He did a little looking on the computer and determined that the
flap is the door that determines whether the heating box gets fresh
air or recirculates the air in the cab. The default is fresh air as
the flap is under suction in the current condition without the broken
off plastic part engaging the motor that opens and closes the flap.

So, the gist of all that, is it would be a big job to repair it but I
can live without it. The only time I would use recirculate would be in
summer when it is hot and I want to use the Max AC. That is not all
that often here in the GWN and I can live without it. My son is quite
willing to repair it but it would be a big job. We would have to
evacuate and recharge the air conditioner etc. plus take the whole
dash apart.

I have an extended warranty so I could take it to the dealer but I am
very reluctant to let their monkeys work on something like this. My
son would put it back together in such a way that no one would ever
know it had been apart. The dealer mechanics would take every shortcut
known to man and the lord only knows what I might be left with
afterwards.

End of the story for the moment. If any more parts break off in the
heater box, then we may have little choice, but for now, I think it
best to just leave it alone.

I think you should go straight to the dealership service manager, slam the
broken piece down on his desk and let him know if his monkeys mess up the
repair in any way, you will sue him and his wife and kids and drive them
all right into the poor house, and you will own the dealership by the time
you are done.

Yeah, that's how you should handle that.

Yesterday I drove the car, started twice, no issues.  I get home, jump
in about an hour later to go out, crankie but no startie.  No CEL.
Jiggled wires around again, still no starties...  Not sure what the
issue might be.

Where is the CPS?  I see where this is a common issue, maybe I should
just swap it.

[MBZ] OT followup on F150 blower noise

2020-02-03 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I pulled the blower motor assembly out of my truck on Saturday morning.
We had some nice weather this weekend so it was warm enough to do it
outside. That was nice. Warm weather for us this time of year was about
0 degrees C. Put cardboard down over the snow and used an old sheet to
protect me from getting really dirty as the running board thing on the
truck was filthy. I have been wanting to wash it for a couple of weeks
but the car wash I generally use is down for repairs and if I wash it,
it will be dirty before I can get it home. However, I do like to wash
off the layer of dirt even if it gets back on fairly quickly.

Removal of the assembly is not too bad. 3 screws hold it in and only one
of them is difficult to get to. A ratcheting box end works well but one
with a flex head would be even better. After the screws are out, it is
still a bit of a wiggle job to get the unit out as the carpet is is the
way etc.

Once I had it out, I found a piece of plastic inside the squirrel cage.
It is about 3/4 in length and diameter and obviously broke off of
something in the heater box. Reaching in through the opening, I find a
flap/door that can be readily moved back and forth so I assume this
piece was what connected the door to the doodad that opened and closed
it. About that time, my mechanic son arrived and took a look at it. He
did a little looking on the computer and determined that the flap is the
door that determines whether the heating box gets fresh air or
recirculates the air in the cab. The default is fresh air as the flap is
under suction in the current condition without the broken off plastic
part engaging the motor that opens and closes the flap.

So, the gist of all that, is it would be a big job to repair it but I
can live without it. The only time I would use recirculate would be in
summer when it is hot and I want to use the Max AC. That is not all that
often here in the GWN and I can live without it. My son is quite willing
to repair it but it would be a big job. We would have to evacuate and
recharge the air conditioner etc. plus take the whole dash apart.

I have an extended warranty so I could take it to the dealer but I am
very reluctant to let their monkeys work on something like this. My son
would put it back together in such a way that no one would ever know it
had been apart. The dealer mechanics would take every shortcut known to
man and the lord only knows what I might be left with afterwards.

End of the story for the moment. If any more parts break off in the
heater box, then we may have little choice, but for now, I think it best
to just leave it alone.

I managed to catch the girl singing the national anthem.  She was pretty
awesome.

I saw this item this morning:

   The Addict's Diary

   14 hrs

Ten years ago, Demi Lovato said one day that she would sing the
National Anthem at the super bowl. Then, just 18 months ago, Demi
Lovato almost died as a result of an overdose. She got sober again
after that and refocused. Tonight, she rocked the world with an
amazing performance of our National Anthem in the Super Bowl! A
relapse doesn’t have to be the end of your story! Thank you for
   being an inspiration, Demi! #TheAddictsDiary

This is a nice story.

FCP does drop ship from distribution warehouses all over the country for some
parts. I just got some Lemförder M112 motor mounts and transmission mount and
they came next day from warehouse in Miami. And that was with my free shipping.

I would agree that FCP does not have the granular selection of parts that some
other suppliers have. Not sure what that’s about.
