Re: [MBZ] W210 vs. W211

2020-08-05 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
My 211 05 E320 4matic wagon is so much more refined than the 210 99 E320.
Quieter, rides better, more comfortable, feels much more solid. Hard to tell it
has 227kmi. The 210 has similar miles and it shows. Gets a solid 23mpg in
whatever driving I do. The 210 does 28 but is not 4m. The 211 320 is peppy
enough but does not feel powerful, just a decent performer, adequate.

The wagon has a 722.6 trans too which is a solid unit. I think others (not 4m)
and newer have the 722.9?

I really like the 211. I liked the 210 E300 too though it was not as refined
but the diesel was fun. The 210 E320 was not particularly inspiring but did OK.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton: How are you doing?

2020-08-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And Aussieland, like NZ, would require you to have large sums of cash or a
business to land in the country permanently if you’re older than that. A friend
in Brisbane tells me that even these requirements are being reconsidered due to
the large number of Asian immigrants who are bringing large sums of $$ with
them.

A coworker has an uncle who emigrated to NZ a few years ago. Essentially, if
you’re toward the end of your career they don’t want you showing up and tapping
their services, so you have to bring in and maintain a large sum of money in
country so they know you won’t be a burden. Uncle sold off businesses that he
owned which generated the funds necessary for he and Auntie to land in Kiwiland.

The worst of the hot/humid summer days here can be unpleasant to be
sure. But I like having a distinct Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. By
the time you get sick of the heat (or cold), the season changes. At the

Bloomington, IN. Actually I'm in more rural Monroe County.

I will say that the weather we've had this week is NOT typical August
weather here. It's normally upper 80s to mid-90s and humid during the
day this time of year. Maybe 70s and still humid at night.

2020-08-05 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Some observations: It's cheaper to cool (AC) than to heat. If your state (or
city) is broke and deep in debt someone's going to be left holding the bag;
better if it's not you. If LOEs cannot maintain order (because LEOs are too
few or criminals are too numerous or traitor politicians still need to be
guillotined) you need to leave. If fixed costs (groceries, shelter, energy,
utilities, taxes, etc.) consume nearly all of your income you did something
wrong.

Northern Indiana is flat and boring IMO. Southern Indiana is hilly and
more interesting at least in that sense.

We've had a normal-to-cool summer here so far. Got down to 52 last
night, unheard of for August. Wonderful sleeping weather. Haven't run
the AC since last weekend.

The worst of the hot/humid summer days here can be unpleasant to be
sure. But I like having a distinct Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. By
the time you get sick of the heat (or cold), the season changes. At the
same time, none of it is really extreme.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton: How are you doing?

2020-08-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m going to guess you weren’t there in the winter…

Green Bay and the whole Fox River valley (Appleton, Neenah, Oshkosh, Fond du
Lac, etc.) is a great area, but lousy in the winter. They’re far enough inland
that they really get some nasty cold and snow. If you were going that far north
I would stick to Sheboygan or Manitowoc, as the closer you are to the lake the
less effect the cold weather can have. As they always said in the weather
forecasts, “Cooler by the lake.”

Wonderful areas, though, really great people and lots to do all year round. If
there was a down side it would be property taxes, which are pretty high there.
However, the infrastructure is excellent as a result, so it’s a bit of a
tradeoff.

I was thinking that if you wanted to be semi-rural WI, MN, MI and IN are all

One of my favorite work trips was to Green Bay, WI. Worked at a TV station

I can deal with the winter, I think. It wasn’t bad before when we moved back to
Indiana, just the lack of sunlight, but that can be addressed a number of ways.
The thing we like about WI is the quality of life there. Can’t quantify this,
but it’s a great place in so many ways. I would presume that places like MI or
MN would be similar.

SWMBO has pretty well decided that this is the house she’s going to expire in,
so the potential for a future move is pretty slim. I could see a possible
seasonal home somewhere else, but even that’s not likely.

I haven’t been to Madison in many years, but I had a great uncle who had a
cottage near Hanover, just west of Madison, that we used to visit regularly as
a kid. Nice area. If that’s a consideration, I would suggest a bit north of
there in the Greensburg/Batesville area. Pleasantly rural but close enough to
the big city, either Indianapolis or Cincinnati only an hour away. Low property
costs and cost of living in general. My brother in law is from Batesville and
he and my sister have a retirement home they just finished building there last
year on Lake Santee.

Illinois is swirling the bowl. It was severely in the red before the government
reaction to Covid. I haven't looked at the numbers recently, but I suspect they
are within twenty four months of bankruptcy at this point. I also suspect they
are hoping for a federal regime change, followed by a nice bail out package.
The public pensions are protected by the Illinois Constitution, and they are
wicked expensive. Plus most, if not all pensions are guaranteed a three percent
increase per annum. Retire at 55, collect a pension, get another cush job for a
decade, collect two pensions. If you take into consideration there are school
administrators in absolute sh*t hole school districts making upwards of $300 k
a year, you can see this is quite a dilemma. As of now pensions are not taxed,
but that WILL be changing.

I would strongly urge NOT moving to Illinois.
I might consider Southern Indiana where Peter lives, or perhaps somewhere
around Madison.

 See for reference.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton: How are you doing?

2020-08-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would say that’s a pretty broad list. You probably need to qualify what’s
most important to you and weight each choice to figure out what’s best.

You know, Dan, we are considering the following in no particular order:
Stay in AZ
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Iowa
Michigan
Indiana
Colorado
Florida

It’s a very tough decision. It ratchets up my anxiety.

You DO NOT want to move to Illinois.

My brother in law left Illinois two years ago to move back to Indiana, after
living near Champagne/Urbana for a number of years. Great area, wonderful
college town with a very vibrant community, low crime, etc. His tax burden
dropped by double digits when he moved out of IL.

The state is going down the financial tubes, and they're increasingly placing
the burden on the taxpayers while doing little to remediate the problems that
caused the issues to begin with.

I would move back to WI in a heartbeat. SWMBO would never sign off on this
unless it was for a summer home, but I don’t want to split my life between two
places so far apart. All I can think of is what I would do when I needed
something and it was at the other house…

We have had 32 days with highs over 110 degrees this summer so far. More are
forecasted for the next week. Now, granted, our humidity is nonexistent, so
it’s just as stifling but in a different way.
We’ve lived here since 1982. I am getting ready to retire, living in a place
where many retire to. SWMBO says she misses seasons (I interpret that as,
“let’s move”).
We both grew up in Illinois, we have family there, but taxes are killer (my dad

Re: [MBZ] Wilton: How are you doing?

2020-08-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Fall is the greatest time of the year, temps moderate, bugs decrease, days are
still relatively long.
Buster and I went out yesterday before the storm to scout goose hunting spots.
I've got one more week of furlough and it coincides with the first week of
goose season. My intention is to hunt every day, the only thing that will stop
me is terrible weather. I'll hunt in mild rain but if its pouring that's no
fun. Fortunately not common in the fall here.
We found a terrific spot, beaver pond next to a fairly recent cut forest. Lots
of lilly pads, shallow with good feed for geese. They cut near the edge of the
pond but the bushes have grown so theres a good place to hide.

There was a time when a tornado "warning" was a fairly serious
situation, and specifically meant that a tornado had been spotted.

Now,

it just means that radar has detected conditions that are "likely" to

I'm not exactly sure when this changed but it seems to go along with

Re: [MBZ] Dan’s POS deals

2020-08-05 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> ...they wouldn’t install in on my ‘87 W124 diesel cause it’s either too old
> or it’s a diesel. Fishy, I thought.

Not that fishy. How does the interlock work? By preventing the electrical
part of the ignition switch
from operating. On a gasser, that means no spark and thus no go. On your 124,
the ignition switch
also runs a mechanical vacuum switch, which is the only thing that can stop the
engine. No electrons
needed at all, though your idle speed wouldn't be regulated without them. Now,
they _could_ put in
an additional electrically-operated vacuum switch in order to regain their
kill-switch functionality, but
this would be a very one-off application. And, also easily disabled by the
clever drunk. (Unhook one
vacuum line under the hood.) Seeing as how they're probably legally liable for
the efficacy of their
system, it's not too hard to see why they'd rather tell you to go pound sand.

Re: [MBZ] Dan’s POS deals

2020-08-05 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Nice.

We opted for Mexican, of course, when they came to AZ to get my two sweet rides
(when I thought I was moving to the UAE).
I’m still trying to find the perfect, wicked cheap gasser for boy-child to use
as a host for a breathalyzer in an effort to get his license back. He can start
this process in about two weeks since it will have been five years since he
totaled my CLK350 Cabriolet (waited the five years so he didn’t have to get the
exorbitantly expensive super secret I’m a drunk insurance policy AZ makes you
get).
I’ve contacted two different breathalyzer places and they both said they
wouldn’t install in on my ‘87 W124 diesel cause it’s either too old or it’s a
diesel. Fishy, I thought.

Kaleb bought my oldest son’s 2005 E320 CDI. It has 337k on the clock and while
well cared for, was getting a little long in the tooth. A solid car, there was
little concern on my part that it wouldn’t make it back to Okie Acres. In fact,
a long drive with a serious Italian tuneup has probably done it good.

We had a small “Q” while he and Regina were here. “Q” as in charcuterie, that
is. It was a nice visit and good time was had by all.
