[MBZ] OT - Bad Sci-Fi Movie

2020-09-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
On the local OTA station that’s a national chain called “METV” there’s a show
that runs on Saturday night called “Svenghoolie”. It’s out of Chicago and has
apparently been a staple around there for decades (Rick?) “Svenghoolie” shows
really bad or legacy horror and sci-fi movies and provides background and even
a little narration during the bumpers for comedic effect.

Anyway, we try to watch it and have it on our OTA DVR (“Tablo”) so we can watch
it at our leisure. This past Saturday’s offering was absolutely campy to the
point where we loved every bit of it, *and* as an added bonus it had “Dr.
McCoy” from Star Trek (the actor) and Janet Leigh ("Psycho”). Lots of other
lesser known actors were it this as well. It was called “Night of the Lepus”.

I don’t want to ruin the plot in case anyone watches it, but in a nutshell some
whacky things take place when some ranchers try to eradicate the rabbits on
their lands, and the result is rabbits of a massive scale and size who overrun
the area and become ruthless killers. The special effects are awesome.

The current unrest and unemployment crisis is having an impact upon owners of
pretty cars, as well as last years models. I was trolling SEA CL and found a
giant spike in people selling off some really nice classics (maybe Grandpa’s
collections) and things purchased last summer and fall that they can no longer
afford. A number of AMG and McClaren, along with loaded out trucks. It was
easy to tell that many were very recent postings due to the blazing orange sky.

I think it ended up around $130 or so.  The seller couldn't ship it at the
advertised price, wanted another $25 or so.  I decided to pay that and have
something rather than nothing.  Still haven't used it yet so no idea on
performance, but the design looks good.

Re: [MBZ] In case you don’t hear from me again

2020-09-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, it is a little early for us, as we usually take a trip to Indianapolis
see family in early October every year. Niece’s wedding dictated this trip.
However, it will still be a welcome change from the hellish nightmare of
Florida this time of year. Especially nice now because the wife’s brother moved
over form Illinois to escape taxes and such so it makes for a much better trip
logistically, too. Everyone now lives within a few miles of each other, except
my sister, who just moved to her retirement home on Lake Santee, so it’s super
convenient and cuts down on having to drive to Champaign-Urbana and back.

You had a vehicle which had problems, you could not find the correct
manifold, yet you sold it for a $2k profit?

How did that come about? It would make an interesting story.

The only reason you need a CDL and a DOT medical and need to comply with
DOT regs is because you are using it in commerce. If its GVWR were over
26,000 lbs, you'd also need a commercial license plate.

Is that your SUV on it in the first picture?

Re: [MBZ] Monday Morning Excitement

2020-09-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I did a 40,000 mile service on my 2015 VW Jetta TDI last week. Oil change, air
filter, fuel filter, cabin air filter. Pretty easy all around, I even managed
to not get oil all down my elbow when doing the oil filter.
I was a little nervous about the fuel filter, I don't have the proper VCDS
cable to talk to the computer to prefill everything. I cycled the key 5 or 6
times which I don't think was enough, it still started hard. Could in part have
been because the fuel tank was really low. I forgot that before starting the
job...

We will leave it at that.

Mercedes content. Change your cabin air filters. They are usually SEVERELY
neglected. There *may* be cabin filters available for your vehicle that are
HEPA rated. Although HEPA filters may stop most virus particles, they will stop
most allergens.  Don't forget to change the carbon filter also. If you've ever
been stuck behind a livestock semi, you'll be grateful.

The correct tire shop repair is to plug the hole, trim the plug inside the
tire and install a reinforced patch over the plug and injury, thus ensuring
an airtight seal that will last the life of the tire.
This repair required dismount , repair, remount and rebalance...
I can presume all that was done in good order since a tire shop did it.

You had a vehicle which had problems, you could not find the correct

How did that come about? It would make an interesting story.

The only reason you need a CDL and a DOT medical and need to comply with
DOT regs is because you are using it in commerce. If its GVWR were over
26,000 lbs, you'd also need a commercial license plate.

Is that your SUV on it in the first picture?

Because he and several others on this list believe the data, statistics, facts
and figures about the current "situation" and do not believe all of the hype.

It seems the majority are waiting for repairs.. Phoenix is still very
active in building construction, and apparently the workers never bother to
close the tailgate on their trucks so they sow nails and screws down the
road as they drive to the job site and back.
The tire shop is of course a magnet to collect everyone who absorbed one of
those land traps into their tire.

Since the Plandemic... I have noticed a lot fewer cars with custom and
expensive wheel/tire sets... I think disposable income is now more closely
held.

It’s a combination. More repair than anything else I’d say. I think the

I built a Visible V8 when I was maybe 12. Loved it. That model looks like it
would be fun.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering

2020-09-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Karl, et al., Wanted to give feedback how this turned out.
At first, I tried to use OpenDNS which is super-simple; just point the router
to the OpenDNS IPs. After MUCH frustration, I discovered that Spectrum/Time
Warner (commercial account) hijacks DNS requests (no matter how the router DNS
is set) and points them to Time Warner servers. It may be possible to opt out
of this hijack situation but so far I haven't found a Spectrum tech that
can/will opt me out.
I had a spare Unifi Security Gateway (USG) on hand so I'm using that. The USG
OS (same as EdgeRouter) includes SquibGuard which does DNS filtering. In the
USG, SquibGuard uses SSH command line instructions, at least until the Unifi
Controller GUI can do this (maybe not in my lifetime).
In retrospect, an EdgeRouter would have been a better choice because the USG
requires a Unifi Controller software patch (.json file) or the filtering setup
won't survive provisioning cycle.
Thanks for the help but I was boxed-in by Spectrum and the existing Unifi
hardware and that limited my options.
Scott
