There's something to be said for using the correct fluids in vehicles.

Subject: [MBZ] OT maybe Honda transmission fluid is magic

Not expecting much, I decided I'd try changing the transmission fluid on
the Element that won't stay in gear. My alternative was to try selling
it as-is and probably getting little more than salvage value for it.

Last time I changed it, I used Castrol fluid that said "for Honda" on
the label.

Fluid was black when I drained it. Filled with genuine Honda fluid,
drove it around until it was warm. Drove better, but still dropped out
of gear a few times (it seems to just drop into neutral instead of
properly shifting to the next gear). Did the drain/fill again. Fluid was
again black. It was dark by then so I called it a night.

Today, drove it around the neighborhood for a while to warm it
up. Shifted perfectly. Drained the fluid again, was somewhat dark but
still transparent and red. Filled again, will drive it some more
tomorrow. I have enough fluid for one more drain/fill.

Not confident yet that this is a long term fix but so far it's looking
hopeful.

Yeah at this stage it is either build or fly - not both. The Tailwind is a

When you run out of Mercedes projects, you can always put together a

An old guy who was the A mechanic at the FBO at the little country airport in
Indiana my Dad flew out of years ago had what I believe was an UC-90, a tandem
version that the military used. His name was “Smokey” and he always flew it to
Florida for the winter with his girlfriend. I asked him one day how long it
took him and he said, “Oh, 3-4 days with a tailwind.”

I thought he was joking.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I could never do that. On the way over I typically had to be functional and
ready to work the next day. My flights usually put me in late in the day, so I
would grab a light meal and try to sleep after staying awake on the plane all
the way over. Our Medical Department issued sleeping pills (prescription
strength stuff) and in the case of my return flights I usually had a good meal
after takeoff, took a sleeping pill, and woke up in time for breakfast and
landing shortly after.

A Luscombe will outrun a Sedan. But the Sedan carries four people.

I joined a flying club with some Cessnas and whatnot, so no real need to
buy anything just yet.

Yup, my last trip to the Philippines I went economy plus which included access
to the British Airways lounge in Logan. I drank a BUNCH of free BA wine. Then
had a couple more with dinner. Slept like a log most of the flight, it was

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just flew up to Indianapolis last week to see family. It was surreal.

The airports, even at what would normally be considered peak times (Sunday
afternoon) were empty. Wander through security leisurely. No stores or
restaurants open, other than sit-down ones, and those were all serving
everything with take-out materials.

Southwest requires middle seats to be empty, so the planes were no more than
2/3 full. People actually got on and off in an orderly fashion, too.

Going back up in November, wondering if it will be the same.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yup. My Singapore route connected through Narita.

Singapore to NAR - 7:00

NAR to ORD (O’ Hare) - 12:00

That’s a brutal, brutal day.

When I would fly to Seoul I often flew from Detroit direct on Northwest. That’s
over 14 hours in the air non-stop. Even in business class that was unpleasant.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like in coach.

I haven't flown anywhere since the first week of February. Its a weird feeling.
We've figured out how to run classes online. In most cases its nearly as good
as in-person although the students don't get any of the networking you get
in-person. I don't get to learn about them either. A lot of my students I know

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Just a quick reminder that on any Unix-ey system you can get 'now' in any
well-known (TLA) timezone you like via:

MacPro3:~ jimc$ date
Fri Sep 25 16:50:02 PDT 2020
MacPro3:~ jimc$ TZ=JST date
Fri Sep 25 23:50:13 JST 2020

Or you can give it a date/time, and see that in a different timezone. The
necessary command-line
arguments differ among operating systems, though. For Mac and Linux they
definitely are different,
so see your own man pages to see exactly what to do.

This has been part of every Unix-type system for the last fifty years.

I traveled to Asia a number of times each year. It was a total mind f*ck

small window of time to call home and not be disruptive, like at breakfast
