Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-10-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh hey, I forgot to tell the other big camp story from last week. We got a
refrigerator!
Onna these in white:
https://uniqueappliances.com/product/8-cu-ft-propane-fridge/?c=72e1ba2726d6
8 cu ft is pretty small but at $1500 delivered propane fridges are pretty
spendy. Ours weighs as much as the much larger unit we have at home. The tubing
on the back is pretty serious.
As usual there was nearly a whole day farting around getting it hooked up
including 2 trips to the hardware store for more fittings. Neither of us wanted
to buy another 50' of 3/8" copper pipe (at probably $1.50 a foot) for the 15
foot run so we ended up putting a couple pieces we already had together. Also
as usual it took me about 5 bad flares to get the hang of the flare tool
again. One trick we used on the flares was to anneal the pipe before making a
flare. Copper work hardens and last time I made flares I was having trouble
with it cracking and leaking, softening it before working with it worked way
better.

The new opener in GWN has that option. I could not make my phone work with it.
The rest of the household figured it out. I do not see a need to use my phone
to have some hacker track me. The former keypad opener was not compatible with
the new machine. A replacement arrived today that wants coding and pairing to
the wifi network.

Great ride! I used to ride a tandem bike on long distance road rides years ago,
and after one of those, you REALLY have an idea of how good/bad your seat is!
Distance riding is very enjoyable if you have a good seat.

Last washer I bought was from Lowes. They didn't have the model I wanted
in stock, but had it on their website, so I ordered it online and had it
delivered to the local Lowes store, where I picked it up. Took a few
extra days but worked out fine.

All our local appliance stores but one are gone, and they only carry
Miele. Lowes, Menards, and Best Buy killed the others off.

2020-10-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Get on I95 and drive north until it stops in Houlton. The last Starbucks is in
Bangor which is 2 hours south of Houlton.Once 95 stops get on RT 1 and drive
north for another hour. Thats Caribou.
Last I knew there was one commercial flight a week into Presque Isle, it flew
to Newark...

My phone didn't have very good data service at camp. Dad has a wifi hotspot
with Cellular One that works well.
Just this week I've moved from Republic Wireless to Red Pocket and thus from
T-Mobile towers to Verizon. I'm going back in a month, we'll see how it does
now. So far around home it seems to work a little better.

I had a similar issue with a replacement tail light lens for Angie's car. It
was really poorly packed in just a light cardboard box. Think cereal box and
you wouldn't be far off.

They got me a good one on the second try and compared to all the other places
the price was very good but it was kind of frustrating.

RepairClinic.com will probably cost a little more but I've never

Prices on good quality dishwashers have gone up 20 percent in the past 6

Then they tried a local appliance place, they had everything in stock,

I was at Lowe’s the other day and it was pretty slow, so I walked through the
appliance department and spoke to one of the sales people.

Long story short, they can get appliances. It’s hit or miss, and if there’s a
particular model you want and they don’t have it, it’s a roll of the dice when
or if it will ever show up. They had a pretty decent selection of stuff across
all price ranges and said that if they’ve got it in the store or warehouse you
can have it in a day or two.

So I guess as long as you’re not stuck on a particular model and can be
flexible, there are appliances to be had. I specifically asked about Bosch
dishwashers, and she said they had plenty of them but not all models.

Fri Sat Sun I did a bike ride "Bicycle Across South Carolina"

48 miles the first day (Friday) on a lot of dirt fire/logging "roads"
and other back dirt/gravel roads, not a lot of pavement. It had
rained
the night before so some of these "roads" were pretty soft and wet
with
mud and very soft beach-type sand.  It was a struggle.  Not much
actual
road so few vehicles the whole ride.

Saturday was 54 miles on mostly dirt/gravel, some pavement, and 10
miles
on the Santee dike (dirt/gravel service road on top), which contains
Lake Santee that was built back in the 30s? to provide cooling
water for
a huge power plant.  I am told that the power company maintains
40some
miles of these dikes/dams, which is the largest amount anywhere in
the
world.  They reinforced a lot of it in the 80s to withstand
earthquakes
but there was a large stretch that would have cost $500mil back
then so
they started buying up land downstream of a potential break to clear
people out of the way.  Saw a lot of farmland and some interesting
sights back in the country off the beaten path.  I had no idea all
this
stuff existed, I knew it was rural up there but it is REALLY
rural!  Not
a lot of commerce other than farming.  Saw very few vehicles so it
was a
comfortable ride.

Yesterday was the last day, 50 miles mostly through the Francis
Marion
on dirt/gravel roads which were very well maintained so fairly easy
riding but BO.RING!  Did 1 mile on the Palmetto Hiking Trail which
necessitated walking the bike along most of it except for a coupla
hundred yards that was ride-able, sorta.  A lot of that area was
blackwater cypress swamp which is very interesting, the rest is
managed
pine forest, mostly loblolly pine to feed lumber and paper mills, but
some of it is being replanted in the original longleaf pine.
Interestingly enough I heard some birds but saw absolutely no
wildlife
in  ~40miles through the forest.  I guess there are deer and bear
back
in there but saw no sign of anything.  Kinda weird.  Hardly any
vehicles
once we got into the forest, so again a quite comfortable ride
without
having to worry about getting run over.

After 149miles I had a blowout 3mi from the finish, managed to get
a new
tube in and rode on in.  Lunch and cobeer (Fat Tire was a sponsor!)
waiting so that was welcome.  The ride was fully supported, we
camped in
2 state parks and a city park, they had portapots and food and
beer and
restrooms/showers in the parks so that was good, hauled our
impedimenta
from one site to the next. Snack stops on the routes, SAG vehicles
following along to deal with any problems.  We bused from the finish
site to the start for the first night's stayover, then rode back
from there.

My butt hurts!  Gotta get a suspension seat post to take out some
of the
pounding.  I rode my Trek 920 Touring bike, which is pretty
comfortable
riding (aside from the lack of suspension other than my butt), 29"
tires
so rolls pretty well even on rough terrain, has wider off-road
tires so
handles that aspect well.  Kind of an all-around bike. Several riders
commented on it and were thinking about getting one though they
seem to
be discontinued, maybe.

Interestingly enough there are NO trail bikes available most anywhere
for the last several weeks, people have been buying them out
during the
covids.  I rode a bit with one woman who said she got the last mtb in
all of Charleston area about 3 weeks ago, it was not a
particularly good
bike but it was working OK.  After the first night of rain
(setting up
camp in the dark and rain! the buses were 2.5hr late picking us
up...)
we had great weather, high 60s low 70s, very low humidity, perfect
riding weather.

Oh, and I loaded my bike and impedimenta in the $700ML500 and
carried it

Awesome work - congrats. I am guessing that your bike cost 3X the cost of
your ML.

[MBZ] OT Sharing with the club members (too much?) (with Benz content)

2020-10-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Fri Sat Sun I did a bike ride "Bicycle Across South Carolina"

48 miles the first day (Friday) on a lot of dirt fire/logging "roads"
and other back dirt/gravel roads, not a lot of pavement. It had rained
the night before so some of these "roads" were pretty soft and wet with
mud and very soft beach-type sand.  It was a struggle.  Not much actual
road so few vehicles the whole ride.

Saturday was 54 miles on mostly dirt/gravel, some pavement, and 10 miles
on the Santee dike (dirt/gravel service road on top), which contains
Lake Santee that was built back in the 30s? to provide cooling water for
a huge power plant.  I am told that the power company maintains 40some
miles of these dikes/dams, which is the largest amount anywhere in the
world.  They reinforced a lot of it in the 80s to withstand earthquakes
but there was a large stretch that would have cost $500mil back then so
they started buying up land downstream of a potential break to clear
people out of the way.  Saw a lot of farmland and some interesting
sights back in the country off the beaten path.  I had no idea all this
stuff existed, I knew it was rural up there but it is REALLY rural!  Not
a lot of commerce other than farming.  Saw very few vehicles so it was a
comfortable ride.

Yesterday was the last day, 50 miles mostly through the Francis Marion
on dirt/gravel roads which were very well maintained so fairly easy
riding but BO.RING!  Did 1 mile on the Palmetto Hiking Trail which
necessitated walking the bike along most of it except for a coupla
hundred yards that was ride-able, sorta.  A lot of that area was
blackwater cypress swamp which is very interesting, the rest is managed
pine forest, mostly loblolly pine to feed lumber and paper mills, but
some of it is being replanted in the original longleaf pine.
Interestingly enough I heard some birds but saw absolutely no wildlife
in  ~40miles through the forest.  I guess there are deer and bear back
in there but saw no sign of anything.  Kinda weird.  Hardly any vehicles
once we got into the forest, so again a quite comfortable ride without
having to worry about getting run over.

After 149miles I had a blowout 3mi from the finish, managed to get a new
tube in and rode on in.  Lunch and cobeer (Fat Tire was a sponsor!)
waiting so that was welcome.  The ride was fully supported, we camped in
2 state parks and a city park, they had portapots and food and beer and
restrooms/showers in the parks so that was good, hauled our impedimenta
from one site to the next. Snack stops on the routes, SAG vehicles
following along to deal with any problems.  We bused from the finish
site to the start for the first night's stayover, then rode back from there.

My butt hurts!  Gotta get a suspension seat post to take out some of the
pounding.  I rode my Trek 920 Touring bike, which is pretty comfortable
riding (aside from the lack of suspension other than my butt), 29" tires
so rolls pretty well even on rough terrain, has wider off-road tires so
handles that aspect well.  Kind of an all-around bike.  Several riders
commented on it and were thinking about getting one though they seem to
be discontinued, maybe.

Interestingly enough there are NO trail bikes available most anywhere
for the last several weeks, people have been buying them out during the
covids.  I rode a bit with one woman who said she got the last mtb in
all of Charleston area about 3 weeks ago, it was not a particularly good
bike but it was working OK.  After the first night of rain (setting up
camp in the dark and rain! the buses were 2.5hr late picking us up...)
we had great weather, high 60s low 70s, very low humidity, perfect
riding weather.

And did I mention I turned 66 (wtf? how does that happen???) on Friday,
so this was a bit of birfday challenge to see if I could still grind out
the miles, I guess I am not ready for the discard pile yet!  Legs were a
bit stiff this morning but I soon worked that out, don't feel too bad
although I am hungry!  Not like I need to replace any lost, uh, energy
stores though...

Oh, and I loaded my bike and impedimenta in the $700ML500 and carried it
all up to the start site about an hour away, up past Max's
neighborhood.  Longest ride in it, everything was fine, so getting
confidence in it.  Gotta get a hitch setup for my bike rack, taking it
apart to fit in the hatch was a bit of a pain but it slid in there well
along with my other gear.

Thanks for sharing!

True, but their web site describes it as an all season tire, not a snow tire.
They have a separate section for snow tires.

I could argue semantics, but if they advertise it for sale they should be able
to get it here. Why would that be any different than Tire Rack shipping a set
to me?

Might explain why the Tampa tire store said 'we don't sell snow tires'.

I tried a 15" wheel (from 124) I had laying around, and it does not go on
the E320. Also, the wheels that came on the E320 are 17", not 16", I
hadn't realized they were so large. I hate them.

I found two more 16" wheels, so now I have a set of four that nearly match
in style, but that do match in specs. (7.5", ET41.)

Now to choose which Hakka to put on it. Looks like 205/65R16 or 215/55R16.
The former is narrower, and might dig into snow better, but the recommended
rim width is narrower than the 7.5" of the rims I have. Looks like the latter
is
the mainstream recommendation.

There is also a house and barn, the barn is, I'm guessing, 30x60 or there

15 years ago. Post and beam it'll last 100 years with minimal maintenance. The

laid out poorly. Two of the upstairs bedrooms share a stairwell but imagine you

The plan is to portion off the house and barn with about 3 acres, currently

PO of my house put one of those in on the main garage door, so I got it by
default when I bought the house.

The notifications are a little annoying, but the ability to open and close with
the app can be convenient when I’m in a car that doesn’t have a remote.

Mine is a belt drive, and the quietest garage door and opener I’ve ever had.
