Not familiar with the NUC, but unless it's really cheap, for 24/7 use I'd probably go with a laptop running a Ryzen 4xxx or 5xxx CPU and NVME SSD instead. Re: [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
The theme park I work for has about 200 of them. We've been highly satisfied with them, but we're running Linux, not Windows. I'm told that they can run Windows, but are a little underpowered for that. With Linux, no complaints. They are vastly faster than what they replaced, for whatever that's worth. They run cool and quiet, and are small. There may be more than one model/generation of them. These are NUC6CAYS. Make sure they have the I/O capacity you need, as there is no expandability. That's part of what makes them small/cheap. SSD's do wear out, and you don't usually get much advance warning as they reach EOL. Quality of such devices is highly variable to begin with. I'm not a huge fan, which is why I'm using hybrid systems. OS and applications (all the replaceable stuff) on SSD, data files on rotating media. I get fast, reliable, and cheap that way. (A/V editing would have a speed problem, but I don't do that.) Our 12-yo Macs are still going strong. :-) Offhand I don't think I've ever had a hardware failure, except for disk drives. (As if that isn't enough!) At my office they use Intel NUCs in the conference rooms with a wireless keyboard and mouse and a big screen HTDV and camera. Re: [MBZ] Lithium batteries
In aircraft the continuous drain capacity is also a concern - you want navigation and communications if the alternator dies before you get to the ground. The lithiums are more than twice the cost, but weight is less than a fourth (VERY significant) and they seem to be expected to last 6 years in use instead of the lead acid's 5 years expected lifespan. They also have to provide spacers for the battery box in certificated aircraft. I will be using them in the experimentals I'm working on. Re: [MBZ] Lithium batteries
I'm seeing that in the off grid solar community a lot lately. The extended lifespan of lithium is supposed to provude considerable savings over lead acid. Unfortunately I guess at least some lithium batteries don't like extreme cold. I just checked and the weather station in the camp says -33.5F was the minimum temp last winter. I'm not sure lithium batteries are right for us. While the ones you linked are absurdly expensive you're getting twice the CCA for less than half the weight. Looking around that site I see that to replace the 2x 100ah batteries I have would be $1800 but would actually give me more usable power because you can safely do a deeper discharge on lithium than on lead acid cells. I'm not going there but it's interesting to know whats available. -Curt On Friday, May 14, 2021, 11:09:13 AM EDT, Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote: They're putting lithium starting batteries in big cases so they are a drop in replacement for lead-acid. https://antigravitybatteries.com/products/starter-batteries/automotive/ag-h8-rs/ ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT wireless security cameras
Yeah. They all suck. I’ve used several different ones, and they all suck. The biggest problem is that they’re typically battery operated, and as a result, there is serious latency when they “wake up”, meaning you miss stuff because by the time the camera starts recording the subject has moved or is out of the frame. If it’s powered by line voltage that’s another story. Give me a brand name and I’ll address it specifically. -D > On May 13, 2021, at 10:53 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Anybody have any experience or recommendations for these? > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
