2021-05-17 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
My neighbor had a 39 mile commute and had a Cmax Ford with a 40 mile range.
He said it worked great. Plug it in when you get home, plug it in at work,
never paid for any gas, lease was $100/mo or similarly trivial. Gave it
back, got the first of several Volts, which never had any gas put in them,
either. Now they are on their second set of Bolt leases. His and hers. Sold
all his old Corvette drag cars.

No established market value outside of the three states (CA MD OR) that

One of the commands I was assigned to had one very similar to this, and it only
got driven a couple times a year.  In four years, never an issue other than the
batteries, because they'd go flat from lack of use.  A few times we just had to
charge them up, but one year they didn't pass a load test so we had to replace
them.

Re: [MBZ] M617 engine test?

2021-05-17 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Another engine health test: used oil analysis.  Make sure you find a lab that
tells you the soot load number.

You could also post a video of a 0 to 100 KPH run to show the engine power.

Buy yourself a compression test gauge and have at it.
There must be step by step instructions around so you won't make any

Re: [MBZ] M617 engine test?

2021-05-17 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
There's a leak-down test and a regular compression test. The leak-down
test will tell you more about the condition of the valves and rings
while the compression test just gives you an overall evaluation per
cylinder.

IDK if a leak-down test is "very" costly compared to a compression
test. By the time you do the compression test, it doesnt seem to me that
the leak-down test takes more work, but I've never done one.

I also don't know that it will make a very big difference in the selling
price. It could hurt, if the numbers turn out to be lower than spec even
though the engine is running well.

[MBZ] M617 engine test?

2021-05-17 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I'm moving toward a decision to auction off my 380K 1983 300TD turbodiesel
station wagon.

Other than the miles, the car has been well maintained, has a clean leather
interior, rust issues have been addressed, and everything works (AC,
cruise, original Becker AM/FM cassette, etc.)

The engine is a transplant from a 1983 300TD that had about 90K fewer
miles. The transmission is from a 1985 W123; there are no shifting issues.

Were this a low miles car (under 150K) I am pretty sure it's worth five
figures on BAT. Because of the high miles, I was wondering whether there
is any test to show quantitatively that despite the miles the engine still
has plenty of life left. Or should I just make videos of cold start, blow
by, and tailpipe exhaust?

Re: [MBZ] OT: "New" house up north

2021-05-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The first time I went into the house I expected it to be musty and wet. The
previous occupant hadn't been living there for like 6 months at that point. Dad
and I were very surprised to find it dry inside. Same thing this spring, nobody
had lived in the house all winter but it doesn't have any sign of smell.
I think that years of wood heat have probably kept the place pretty dry. A good
tin roof (Amish workmanship) will hopefully keep things that way...

You gotta love those old hermits up north.  A buddy from college lived
in the Boston area, his dad was a school teacher (shop maybe?) and did
handyman work when he wasn't teaching.  He was your basic kind of guy, a
lot of fun, did a lot of crazy shite.  He knew some old hermit up in New
Hampster who collected up all kinds of stuff.  Hermie had some original
Currier & Ives (I think they were) prints from way back he got cheap off
the guy, and some other old etchings and prints and stuff he had
scavenged from here and there.  Worth a lot of money.  They would go up
and visit this guy every summer, he lived in a shack way back in the
woods somewhere, basically lived off the land, went to "town" every few
months for some stuff.  They would take him some groceries and such and
trade for things he had.  Apparently there were a lot of these kind of
folks living back in the woods in the rough.

4kW will not run your house, not even close, unless you just want a few lights
