Aircooled engines run much higher cylinder head temps than liquid cooled
engines, meaning a higher risk of detonation. Yes, I'd run premium without
question. An aircraft engine with 8.5:1 pistons needs a minimum of 93
octane fuel.

[MBZ] More on cat thefts

2021-05-23 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Saw this in our local MD online discussion:

"I learned recently that catalytic converters are being stolen from cars in
Bethesda and likely other communities in Montgomery County. I replaced mine
about 2 years ago (I have a very old Prius). The only way to prevent this
from happening is to install a cover over your catalytic converter.
Tomorrow I am going to Jim Coleman to have it installed. Once the cover is
installed, it is very difficult to remove the catalytic converter from your
vehicle. This may be a county wide issue."

Re: [MBZ] 1987 190Dt

2021-05-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Does anyone need a new project?

Depending on the body/interior condition, that might be a worthy
swap for the 190D my son is driving. Massive clearcoat failure, and
some seriously bad rust in one corner. (Poorly repaired damage, I
think, that was cancerous when I got it.)

But MA is not WA, nor is my son a gifted mechanic. Nor much of a
self-starter. But he HAS commented on maybe painting the car.
That labor, or money equivalent, would be better spent swapping
drivetrains IMHO.

A more likely donor is a nice 190E that some riceboy butchered and
then blew up the motor. The drivetrain and suspension parts from
ours could make it right again.

Look up House of Ghia. That use to be “the” place for everything Ghia. Not sure
that’s still the case, but the guy that founded it (who has since passed on)
was a major league fanatic about them and probably forgot more than anyone else
ever knew.

[MBZ] OT short ghia update

2021-05-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
You may recall I picked up a Karmann Ghia last November. Not wanting to
subject it to any salt or winter it has been in the garage since then. I
got it out today and it started up and ran nicely. It ran pretty rough
in the driveway the few times I tried to run it during last winter so I
figured I'd need to clean out the carbs and give it a general tune up.

However it is running much better now. I added about 5g of fresh gas and
half a bottle of Techron but not sure that really made a difference.

It has a dual carb setup with Webers and I took a closer look and they
don't seem to have any choke mechanism at all. So that would explain the
rough running in the cold. I guess the car was set up as a summer
driver. Not sure if such a thing is commonplace?

I found in the documentation that with the rebuilt the prior
owner installed has a 9:1 compression ratio. So I guess I should
probably buy at least mid-grade gas for it? Or premium?

I also discovered some rust on the passenger side rear floorpan. Not
catastrophic but probably need to replace about a square foot of it. A
project for next winter. The rest of the car seems solid.

Need to track down an extra wheel for a spare tire, as that is
missing. Anyone know of a good Aircooled email list?

Re: [MBZ] 1987 190Dt

2021-05-23 Thread Frederick Moir via Mercedes
Alles.
This car spent 10 years in a garage in Conn. when purchased.
The engine smokes from cyl 5.
I think (after the fact!) that it is due to stuck rings.
The head has been repaired. (skimmed, new valves, guides etc.)
New rings, bearings, gaskets and lifters included, plus more.
The I/P was jammed full on when I got it. Instant heart attack! A good low
mileage I/P is included. The head gasket was blown at, you guessed it, #5.
There was some water in cyl 5 when the head was removed.
it does run and starts every time. It has NOT been on the highway since
first repair, so, if it runs away on you, good luck.
More details by phone or in person.
YMMV
Fred.

First up was there a brown 6.9 on copart recently? Seems vaguely familiar.
Anyway passed a transport with a 116 on the top front. As I was passing I saw
copart markings and stickers on it and when I got to the front (the car was
loaded backwards) I saw it was a 6.9.

Later on I passed a VW bus of some sort totally engulfed in flames.

I had a friend growing up, and his dad had a ‘75 450SEL. It was perfect other

only a teenager at 15 years old in 1989. A pre-ACC W116 would be pretty nice!

Re: [MBZ] Just so you know, I’m not out trying to buy ever car I can find like normal.

2021-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Exactly. It’s like the old trope of putting a new set of tires, a tune-up and
other maintenance items and expecting to add that to the value of the vehicle.
It simply doesn’t work that way.

Andrew, I’m not picking on you, but the “extensive body work” doesn’t translate
into significant added value. The condition of the car does, and that certainly
reflects the added value the bodywork brings to it, but attempting to recoup a
significant amount of the cost is usually a futile effort unless it’s something
substantial such as a major restoration on a concours-quality car.

Best thing to do in my opinion is to test the waters with a submission to a
good online auction site like Cars and Bids and see what the response is.
They’ll have far more insight into the market and the value of the car relative
to it and any of us ever will, and again, it costs you nothing but the time it
takes to prepare everything, which you’re going to have to do anyway if you
expect to net top dollar out of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Just so you know, I’m not out trying to buy ever car I can find like normal.

2021-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed. I doubt it’s a BaT candidate because of the miles. Cars and Bids is a
possibility, but I’m doubting they’ll give you a $10k reserve. Without knowing
more about it and seeing extensive pictures, it’s tough to say, but the miles
are going to be your biggest detriment. One thing that could potentially offset
that is service records.

Put your information together along with lots of detailed pictures and submit
it to C Worst case scenario is they turn you down, it doesn’t cost anything
to try. The more effort you make to market it the more likely you are to get at
or near your price.

Lastly is eBay. You could put it up there and cross your fingers, but you’ll be
dealing with all of the BS that goes with it.

The local group is a cluster.

Sometimes I try to unload stuff I would rather not throw away. For example, I
had some left over drywall pieces from doing my kitchen. These weren’t scraps,
they were 4’x4’ and 18”x4’ pieces, in good condition and not dinged up. I put
them on the global group and got nothing for a day. OK, I got it, they’ll go in
the trash. The next day I get swamped with the “Is this still available” dings.
I followed up with 2-3 of them. Two of them took better than four hours to say
they weren’t interested (???) and one said they would come and get them. I was
outside later in the day, had them leaning up against my mailbox. A van drove
by, slows down, the driver looks at the drywall, then drives off. About 2
minutes later I get a message from the person saying it’s too far away and
they’re bailing.

Grrr.

Drywall goes into the trash.

2021-05-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
A 617 126 is not a high performance car by any means but it moves OK.
It will run all day at 80mph and is very comfortable doing so.

You should come get this 84 that was my boy's, I'd let YOU have it for
$1500.  Been sitting awhile but last I started it, it ran fine.

As hard as it may be to believe, I have only ever had 1 126 617 powered car in

leave the 617 to the 123 or 116 cars.

[MBZ] Just so you know, I’m not out trying to buy ever car I can find like normal.

2021-05-23 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Lately I’m gearing more toward buying specific cars I want to collect. Right
now I’m wanting a 123 turbo or possible even and early pre 80 123 diesel of
some sort. Also possibly looking for a 124 or 126 diesel but really wanting a
123. Why I don’t know, I have been out of them for years but suddenly want one
again. People selling them are either flakes, or think they are worth a
fortune.

Re: [MBZ] 240TD

2021-05-23 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The other issue I have been running too lately is a car will be listed for
weeks. Finally get a response, we setup a time and I show up to other people
there at the same time looking at it, or after 2 hours on the road I’m almost
there and get a message that it’s sold. People just have no common sense or
common courtesy when selling items.

2021-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed.

I have two Marketplace groups I frequent, the rich people’s neighborhood and
the “global” one for the area as a whole. The rich people’s neighborhood group
is usually pretty good to deal with, prompt responses and good transactions.
