Re: [MBZ] Jingle Bells Mercedes Diesel Style

2021-12-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

That's good.   As a 50 year owner of MB Diesels, I can relate...   Slowly

Of all the thousands of cars that passed my 200D, most of them have been
crushed and made into various Japanese cars several times, then made
into a Korean or chinee car.   My 200D lives on.  And my son's 200D
lives on also. (As do the two 240Ds)

In MBCA, new members would often ask where they should put their club
decal/sticker.   My standard answer:  On a Diesel, the driver side
corner of the rear window, so those passing you can see it.  On a
vergasser, the passenger side corner of the rear window, so those you
pass can see it.

The great thing was they never quite knew if it was a joke, or
serious.   It is BOTH!

I thought it was time to bring this out again since I just found it
again. I originally wrote this up in 2012. Jingle Bells Diesel
Mercedes Style

Jingle bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D, HEE!!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, Vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D.

Sliding through the snow,
In my old 240D,
Over the streets we go,
people pass with ease.

The seat belt buzzer rings,
But I know we're buckled tight,
If we get through this Christmas snow storm, We'll make it home tonight!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, Hee!

Jingle bells, diesel smells, vacuum pump is weak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D.

On and on we go,
In My old 240D,
What's that in the road,
Up ahead I see?

Piled up behind a truck,
Are all those passing cars,
As I creep by in the left hand lane, I thank my lucky STAR!!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, driving is a breeze,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, HEE!

Jingle bells, Diesel smells, Oh what's that noise I hear,
We've finally made it home now, so let's go have a beer!

Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?

2021-12-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I joined Kathy Kenels's MBCA list in the mid 90s, but it had little
content about W110s, and little expertise.  I Joined Alex Gabbard's
veteran's list in 95 or 96.   Great people there. Tried the ritter
easley(hitler) list about the same time.   Nothing there but 124/126
stuff, so I quit.   When Alex gave up being listmom, I was about to
offer to, when Dickarde offered, and he already had equip and running
lists.  From dickarde's MBZ.org I was on Diesel and Veterans lists.
The veterans morphed into 108 list, and was of no use to me. By then I
had the 81 240D since about 1994 or 5.    The dickarde DIesel list and
the others all melted down when Dickarde's server melted down.
Dickarde was too busy tok'in' weed to be bothered to get a server up and
running so the lists died for a couple months.  Kaleb scavenged the
dickarde list emails he had and invited us onto his new Mercedes list.
Was there until I was booted for speaking truth. Okietalk is a great
place to be!

My 200D turned 56 in August.  I've had it 49 years.
Lost count of all the running and junker MBs I've owned.
I think I was up to 16 or so by 1979.

All Diesels other than the 2 380SLs #1 daughter insisted on, and the
E320 (124) I got from Kleb for her to drive in the winter.  Then there
was the 230TE and the 300TE.. and a junker 190c.   So I guess I have had
6 vergassers.   Happy when each one went down the road. (Except the
190c, it was only intended to be parts for 190Dc s and 200D.  I WAS
happy when I got the M120 engine from it sold!)

Dwight Giles via Mercedes

I joined the diesel list in 2002 and yes Dr. Booth kept order and
provided knowledge. I got my first diesel that year.(240D)

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pandemic cravings

2021-12-06 Thread Clay via Mercedes
No order for take away in over two years, somebody may have done delivery prior
to that. I think last one I did myself was for a pizza in 2011. The plague
hit while in GWN. Still no delivered food, but SWMBA wanted to assist the
local small business early in the event, so sat in the car outside a few venues
one weekend, while the employee carefully deposited the bagged meal on a chair
outside the place. In single digit temps. Just to make sure the food became
inedible unless you bolted for the grub immediately, then wolfed it down in the
car while watching others scamper to grab their bag of chow.

If it's been in Champaign-Urbana for any length of time, a lack of rust would
be amazing.

Low miles and manual climate controls but with the rust and interior I'd say
it's overpriced.

I have ordered almost no take out food or delivery since the pandemic began. I
live out in the far unlit unknown so the likes of Uber Eats and others don't
bother with me.

I cook at home, as I pretty much always have. The only change as been since I
haven't been going to the office, I don't eat lunch in town.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Harbor Fright

2021-12-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I forgot to mention the splash pan. My car isn't so bad, Angie's Golf is
terrible, a big metal bump shield. That car is very low and I bottomed it out
on a manhole cover once and bent the oil pan, the metal shield is to hopefully
prevent a re-occurrence.Fortunately that car has a top mounted canister oil
filter so the oil can be changed from the top...

course oil goes everywhere when you start to unscrew it.

The Nissan Frontier isn't quite so bad, the filter is easy to get to from
underneath EXCEPT you have to remove the splash pan first. You don't spill a
lot of oil removing it, but you do lose an ounce or two.

The Volvo uses a cartridge filter, the canister opens at the top, so it's
pretty clean. A topisder extractor would be useful on that car, because
otherwise you also need to remove a splash pan to get at the oil drain plug.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Harbor Fright

2021-12-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
For me, the messiest part of an oil change is dealing with the filter, and the
extractor doesn't help you there. Draining the oil into a pan doesn't seem that
big a deal to me, especially since you might need a pan anyway to catch the oil
from the filter (depending on the vehicle and its filter configuration).

Occasionally those do go on sale. I bought one a while back for around $100 or
so before the pandemic and ensuing everything shortages. Inside track isn't
bad, if you know that you will be using it over the next year or two. I suspect
that you will use it, as you begin to spend more time in AZ and less time in FL.

While I’m not a big fan of the place, it has value. Especially when you have
one less than five minutes from the house (both houses, for that matter!)

After looking at the alternatives on Amazon and knowing they’re short-lived, I
went to the HF in Flagstaff and bought my second six gallon oil extractor (I
already have one in Tampa.) Despite the hit on my credit report for the hard
inquiry, I opened a HF charge account to get 10% off my purchase, bringing the
price down to around $160 before taxes. And before anyone complains about the
price, I’ve spent more than that total for all my previous oil sucking
machinery. I only wish I could have bought one of these years ago.

Got it home, unboxed it, set up the inlet connections and promptly changed the
oil in the ML. Took a whopping 10 minutes, if that.

I’ll pay off their charge next month to avoid usury on the finance charge
(they’re not stupid, of course) and call it good. Now I’m wondering if I would
have done better to just join the “Insider’s Track” club?

[MBZ] OT - Harbor Fright

2021-12-06 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes

Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD needs RR brake caliper

2021-12-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
That's always the debate I have. FLAPS parts are cheap and have good
warranties, and I've never had much hassle exchanging parts, but it's a PITA to
install two or three until you finally get a good one. That happened to me with
a brake master cylinder.

I've had pretty good luck with parts at NAPA but they tend to cost a bit more.
I do notice that most of the indy shops use NAPA for parts though, so that says
something (they want to minimize warranty re-repairs).

OEM is always best. Try FCPEuro? I also don't think you should mix brands of
calipers on left/right sides. If you have ATE calipers, don't replace just one
side with a Bendix.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-06 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
3-4 years ago I did a bike ride down to Savannah. Stayed the night with my
cousin then figured I would ride the train back to charleston then bike to
where my truck was parked, which would have been like 15-20 miles but that was
ok. She dropped me at the train station, which was nice. Once the staffers got
done yow-yowing in back and one came to the counter I asked for a ticket and
she said it was full. Really. Then there was this whole conversation about my
bike and whoever loaded bags was not there, or something about no room to put
it in the bag queue, something stupid. It’s a 12lb bike so not like it needs a
lot of muscle to deal with it. Anyway I bailed on the idea.

There was a car rental place right next to the station so I went there, got a
car for a bit more than the train ticket cost, drove back to an office about a
mile from where my truck was, a guy ran me over there, then I drove on home,
probably got there before the train would have arrived. No hassle no drama no
gummint “workers” to deal with.

I was kinda looking forward to the train ride as I had heard it was very pretty
going along the coastal marshes and all. Oh well.

I forgot to mention that not only was our train late arriving, but our luggage
was even more delayed because it stayed on the wrong half of the train when
they split it at one point. They did bring it to our hotel later, at least.

I hate that fridges seem to all have the condenser underneath these days.
Logically it's a really stupid location and in most cases results in needing a
fan.
I *think* our freezer uses the top to radiate heat, at least the top of it gets

Incidentally the noise from the fridge was getting worse, so I took the back

noise. I removed the assembly holding the fan (one screw secures it). The thing
is definitely built down to a price but at the same time it's very easy to get
it out and replace it if it comes to that. I was able to get at the motor
bearings and put a few drops of my favorite Lubriplate oil on them, then
cleaned all the dust and grime off the fan blades. It's running silently for
now, we'll see how long it lasts.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Amtrak is built on the finest govt bureaucracy money can buy. Saddled with
debt from sources so far unrelated it'll make your head spin it somehow manages
to muddle on being "funded" by 2 or 3 routes that actually make money.
The DownEaster: Portland, Maine to Boston,
Acela Express: Boston to NYC to DC
A REAL investment in Amtrak would involve actually buying tracks so that they
didn't need to wait for slow freight trains to get out of the dang way. This
would also allow continuously welded rail so you can run at 150+ mph like the
trains do from Boston to CT. After CT the rails are shared and not welded so
you slow down to 45mph max...
Real high speed rail would cut down on air traffic because trains can leave
from inside the city and deliver you to a point inside a city. For Boston to
NYC for instance the train takes 3 hours (should take 2 except for slow track
in CT), an airplane takes 20 minutes but then you've got an hour at the airport
heading out and half an hour coming in (at least) and at least an hour (and
$50) to cab from the airport into the city.Plus train seats are bigger, way
more comfortable, food and drink is available or you can bring your own. You
can get a 4 top if you're with friends. Much more civilized than flying.
It irritates me how badly the US has bungled rail travel...

You know what's more convenient than sticking your fob in a faraday
purse every time you get out of the car?
Mechanical keys. Pull it out of the ignition and drop it in your pants
pocket.
