You have a leak somewhere.  If you continue to drive it, you will burn
up the pump.  It should not have to run all that frequently if it is
leak free.

I had a 300SEL that had a bad plunger seal on the fuel distributor. Dang thing
sucked fuel, but ran OK. Not fun to replace, but not a major undertaking,
either. Made a significant difference in fuel consumption once it was replaced.

Re: [MBZ] CIS Fun

2023-03-02 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Most likely leak point is the check valve in the fuel pump (the anti-return
valve, German is a strange language). Second wear point on a W116 is likely to
be the plunger seal in the fuel distributor. this can also cause hard starts
hot by flooding the engine as the fuel drips out with the engine off until the
accumulator is empty.

The accumulator is a can in the fuel line, looks like a filter but isn’t. Just
a diaphram and spring, holds approx 100mL of fuel I think, maybe 150. It’s
there to prevent vapor lock on hard starts.

Next most likely is leaking fuel nozzles, if you have not changed them do so.

You can also have a bad pressure regulator valve that leaks back into the tank.

I’m getting ready to dig into the KE-Jet on the wagon, it goes way rich,
probably because the 35 year old oxygen sensor is shot. Stays in limp mode,
and its a real pain because occasionally it will work and lean the engine out
to the point it stalls.

Re: [MBZ] CIS Fun

2023-03-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I went through the CIS troubleshooting steps using a HF gauge set back when
the 450SLC stopped starting. Everything checked out good. The problem
turned out to be all the rock hard rubber tubes and bits under the intake
manifold were leaking air. Replaced all of those, had the heads reworked
while I was there, etc., and it ran great.

Re: [MBZ] Chain saws

2023-03-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I bought a Husqvarna 450 after we had that last discussion about chainsaws
a few years ago. Other than the coil module dying two years ago, it starts
the first time everytime. I mix the gas myself using no-alcohol unleaded
and the Husqvarna oil and store it in an old metal one gallon can.

I got tired of the big box saws that died an early death and the Worx
plug-in electric saws (burned up two of them, one under warranty Lowes
replaced it with no questions asked).

[MBZ] Does the 642 oil cooler have coolant flowing thru it?

2023-03-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Today I replaced the air suspension pump for the 3rd time in 2 years on
the Hoovie GL.  While doing this, I was horrified to discover some oil
floating in the top of the coolant reservoir.  WTF?  So, assuming my
eyes are not playing tricks on me, my first thought is a head gasket
leaking.  It is showing now signs of issues at all, other than this
surprise.  I have never heard of head gasket issues on the 642, at least
none that I am aware of.  So then I got to thinking maybe its getting
into the coolant via the oil cooler.  Is this possible?

[MBZ] CIS Fun

2023-03-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I am actually sort of having fun playing with the CIS and learning all
about it.  After spending a lot of time jacking around with the HF fuel
gauge set and not getting accurate readings, I spent $130 on the correct
test set that I picked up on ebay.  Within minutes I am starting to
narrow down the issue.  I am running thru the tests that are spelled out
in a training doc I found on w116.org that tells you which tests to run
based on what the issue is.  Test 3 tests the system pressure.  This is
done with the engine off, turn key on with valve closed on the gauge
mine is dead on.  Next test is testing static pressure.  For this test,
you open gauge, turn key on for about 30 seconds to fill the
accumulator, then turn off.  It says pressure is supposed to be 2.8bar.
Since there is not a range, I assume it must be exact?  While the pump
is running it only shows .5 bar.  After key is turned off, pressure
builds up but mine only gets to about 2.5 bar.  The test then says
within 30 minutes it can leak down to 2.5 bar, so .3 bar leak off.
After about 8 minutes mine has lost about .4 bar. So, this is the first
issue to correct.

Items it says to check for leaks are the cold start valve (done, it is
not leaking), fuel pump non return valve (where is this?), accumulator
for leaking diagram (is this the deal back by the pump?), pressure
compensating valve (not sure where this is either), FD for internal
leaking around control plunger or o-rings of metering sleeve.

I will be digging into this further but this is just a quick check of
the system so far.  Without throwing parts at the thing, which if these
items it a most likely cause?  I figured somebody that has dealt with
CIS a lot would run into some common issues.

2023-03-02 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We have a Worx mini 10” 20v chainsaw that has a pole to convert it into a pole
saw. It was good enough to cut a tree that had fallen onto our chain link fence
last June. The tree was about 5” thick. We had the weed whacker as well with 3
batteries between them. It’s just what we need for occasional cutting and
trimming.

I have a Greenworks 16" 40V saw that I bought some

would work but I'm convinced that I'm not going

battery and charger so I have extra chargers and
batteries.
At 73 I find that even now the two 4AH and two 2AH
batteries will last for about 3/4 hour of cutting.
after that I am ready to go inside and sit down
and let the batteries charge because I've cut
enough wood to last for the next month of the cold
season down here in the Gainesville area of Fl. We
heat entirely with wood so it is a goodly pile
that will require splitting but I tend to leave
that for later. Kind of done in with cutting by then.
Really like the saw and I have replaced the bar a
couple of times and worn out 3-4 chains with
resharpening in the years I've had it. Still works
good.

It's not that hard to mix your own. Start with ethanol-free gas, available
around here
at most Maverick stores, and mix with the Stihl oil. I believe it has fuel
stabilizer in it.
But the stuff is now marketed as being biodegradable, so beware.

I suspect that the metal can, impermeable and unvented, is the key to the
storage life
of the premixed fuel.

Mine’s a Stihl that I bought off FBM or CL, I don’t recall. It was running when
I bought it, but I suspect that even though I ran it out of fuel and have only
used ethanol free fuel in it, the carb is crudded up just from lack of use.

I really need to get it sorted before hurricane season starts.

One of the guys in the snowmobile club fought a Poulan Pro for years. It'd run
sometimes but it had no balls. They're garbage commodity saws.

I've got a Husky 445 which is the top of their homeowner saws. I've been
thinking about upgrading to a 450 which is the bottom of the pro line but as
you step into pro saws the weight increases quickly.

I like that my 445 has secondary air injection which means no smoke when it's
running. I've had it for 15-16 years now. I did finally upgrade to a
semi-chisel chain instead of a safety chain. It cuts a lot faster...

In the picture I've cut all the wood in the tractor bucket on that one small
