I would base it on the compression ratio of the engine. Yes knock sensor will 
retard the spark but at some point if it's a high compression engine you will 
get detonation with lower octane fuel. Why not run 85 or 82 if it's such a good 
idea?

Exactly. There is absolutely NOTHING more entertaining than feeling and hearing 
the V12 in full throttle, which in Benzes is actually quite low-key and refined 
but it just pulls like a freight train, esp when you hit 4000rpm and the speedo 
needle is climbing like a rocket. Maybe I’m wrong about that as I haven’t 
driven the ML63 yet, and my buddy’s 1289hp AMG GTS was on a whole nuther level. 

The 02CL500 is maybe a bit more boy-racerish as the exhaust has a nice growl to 
it, but it pulls strongly too. Fun. I just took my lady friend to the 
aeropuerto and of course she messed up on times so we had a fun run to there. 
Told her to grab the ohshit handle and hang on. That one was $1200. I tightened 
a power cable and replaced 3 fuses after the PO had paid $100s to a shop to fix 
something (it was never clear exactly what it was, a battery drain maybe?), 
they couldn’t, and it had sat for months. I’ve now put 12kmi (maybe more) on it 
with no other work. So that one was probably 98-99% depreciation in current $$$ 
and has essentially cost me nothing else.

Yup, what Floyd and Jim said.

I will probably have another $4k in the car by the time I’ve gotten it 
completely sorted to my standards, which is a big part driving those costs, not 
because the car needs it, necessarily. If I end up replacing the accumulators 
and ABC/tandem pump, I’ll have close to $2k in parts costs alone, but it 
remains to be seen if I’ll go that far. Market for the car completely sorted is 
in the $10k-$12k range, so I’m still under the threshold of “break-even”, so to 
speak.

And Floyd can back me up on this - I have never had as many smiles to the mile 
as I have in the CL600. It is a wondrous car to drive. You’re essentially 
driving the pinnacle of the MB product line for that model year, and you can 
tell.

I submit that depreciation via age has a leveling effect, with all cars
(with possible exotic exceptions) approaching an equal-utility level
of pricing as they age.

In other words, the least expensive cars experience the least depreciation,
and the most expensive experience the most depreciation.

The bottom-feeder buyer is paying X dollars for "it rolls and runs, and it's
Y kind of vehicle."  And that's it.  At some point marque and mileage are
substantially irrelevant, and it's down to condition and configuration.

Which means your V12 supercar can be had for cheap-cheap-cheap
when compared to its MSRP.  Making it a good value?  Unless, of course,
that V12 is substantially more expensive to keep in operation!  Then, maybe
not so good a value...

That’s nothing. Base MSRP on my 2001 CL600 was $117,200 in 2001 dollars, which 
translates to about $205,000 today. I paid $4,000 for mine in pretty good 
condition, which is equal to about $2300 in 2001. Floyd has probably done 
better with some of his W215/216 cars.

In other words, I paid a smidge below 2.0% of the original selling price for 
the car. Or, if you’re a glass-half-empty person, the car took a 98% hit in 
depreciation over its current life.

Good for us!

That’s a quite good price. The engine is very reliable, the rest of it is 
beefed-up fairly simple drivetrain under a mostly unchanged 40yo (or more?) 
solid military body. Somewhat agricultural and utilitarian but usually tarted 
up in newer versions. This one not so much given 20yo age.  They have the price 
reflecting a limited niche pricey supply, and are sorta cool, and not totally 
impractical for soccer mommy or rich toy use, and will climb straight up a wall 
if you want to do off-road. If I had a lot of disposable money I would consider 
getting one just because, and this one looks to be decent.
