For supposedly world-class programmers and a company owner that wants to
fundamentally transform the world, the FBMP database functionality is on par
with RBase for DOS. Actually that is being very insulting to RBase, RBase could
actually do database functions like search and organization.

A friend of mine used my HF oscillatory tool to square up the end of a

The plaster saws I recall had a round blade that oscillated inside a
cover so that only like 1/4" was exposed and the oscillation was not
much so it would not damage skin if it hit, and I think they had a
vacuum attachment to suck up the dust.  I remember wanting one of those
because I don't think the oscillating saws were on the market.

They did. I remember the doc using a Fein to cut the cast off me in 1966,
IIRC. Twenty-five years ago I bought a Fein when it was on clearance,
from someplace or another. (Electric rather than pneumatic, which was
also available at that time.) Rarely needed, but there's no substitute for

Re: [MBZ] OT: TDI brakes

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Which reminds me of a trick I've taken to:

The wheels on the VWs (both the Golf and Jetta) are enclined to weld themselves
to the rotors. I used to put anti-seize on but as you probably know that
"mechanics glitter" can make an awful mess if you touch it.

Watch Wes Work on Youtube uses fluid film so the last time I had the wheels off
I tried that, a quick spray on the wheel where it contacts the hub. Wheels come
off again no problem. I'm sold, of course the car does smell of sheep for a
couple days...

[MBZ] Could be a good deal for a project -- 1989 Mercedes 560SEL - $15 (Charlotte)

2024-04-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
The car in the image is the same color and model as the car I am
selling, but the one I have is covered so photos are a challenge. Our
car is not a junker but it is not running either. It has been in my
driveway covered for several years and I am selling it as is. It is too
valuable to crush. The right buyer could get it back on the road or sell
it for parts. I don’t have the time or I would do that. The body is
virgin and has very little in the way of dings if any. The leather
interior, while it needs to be cleaned is in excellent condition. The
car was my late dad’s car and he kept it immaculately. The rear window
is busted out. I won’t sell the car for metal value as it’s not junk. I
will however sell it cheap to someone who can make productive use of
this wonderful S Class Benz gas V8.

I think the car is done too. Might be worth $300 for parts or to try to
get running

Vehicle was running daily but 2 injectors were bad. Replaced but
wouldn't start. Tried hard but no start. I am done with the car.

In 1966 he was using a toothy saw blade looking thing. I think they've
always been available, the Fein is/was not only a sander.

My 300TD wagon was losing power going up long hills but after I changed the

When I did front and rear on my 2014 Jetta it was much less dramatic than that
since we don’t have the rust issue here in the AZ.

a coating of dried schmutz, presumably the remnants of the grease. I soaked

The rear pads were worn but the rotors were trashed, big chunks out of them. I

[MBZ] OT: TDI brakes

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So my 2015 Jetta TDI has needed brakes for awhile now, they were pulsing
something terrible. I'd blamed it on Angie's riding the brakes. She does but in
this case I think it was actually my fault.

The pins on the front brakes had very little grease left. Pads looked fine but
I think the rotors were cupped, causing some of the pulsing. The pins also had
a coating of dried schmutz, presumably the remnants of the grease. I soaked
them in brake fluid and cleaned with a wire brush and very fine steel wool. I
found I had a spare in my parts bin so I swapped that in for the worst one.

When I reinstalled I coated them with a thick layer of Sil-Glyde silicone pin
lube. I only discovered it a few years ago and clearly needed to put some on
the last time I did these brakes.

The rear pads were worn but the rotors were trashed, big chunks out of them. I
had to spend considerable time cleaning the caliper frame to get the new pads

My 2015 Jetta TDI is a hoot and a hollar, 140ish post-dieselgate HP scoots it
along nice. It'll pull hard up around 95mph which is as fast as I've ever cared
to go. Its maybe a little bigger than a 123 inside. I can ride in the backseat
with the front seat setup for me. If I put the front seat all the way back I
can't get the clutch all the way down.
Slightly more tinny than a 123 but the engine is quieter so its probably a
wash. Not quite as comfortable a ride as an MB...

Yeah, this was one of those, “Why haven’t I tried one of these things
before?!?!” moments. I’ve seen them promoted for trim work and such a lot, and
I can see why they would be super nice for that, but I hadn’t realy thought
about using them for demo or other rough work. We needed to cut some drywall
out under a bathroom vanity/sink the other day, and using a multitool made it a
real walk in the park.

Oldest son wants another 300D diesel, but it must be a turbo. I know they’re
not terribly common, but if you come across a decent one, please drop me a note.

Thank you!

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Vibratory tools have been out for awhile but I don't think the cutters were
very good. Newer ones are much better and way more precise than you can be with
a sawzall.

I've got a Makita cordless one, its going to get exercised next month cutting
new heading ducts into the great northern estate. The builders put in new
floors but didn't cut in any ducts, which is fine, I'm ordering nickle plated
grates anyway.

On a related note, has everyone discovered “multitools,” the things with the
blade that sticks out and vibrates? When I replaced the service door on the
garage in Flagstaff, I bought a nice M18 Milwaukee one. Cut through stuff like
buttah, and flush, too! Just used it again last week. Why didn’t someone think

I'd always assumed a 240D 3.0 would be an "adequately powerful 240D".

As somebody who lives where its kind of hilly a 240D with its 50mph max

I could crest at 55. A 190D has the same power but a little less weight and
could hold speed up the hills.

I was very happy with my '98 Jetta TDI, at 90hp it had enough power to
accelerate up those hills so I recon a 240D 3.0 would probably be able to
sustain speed or maybe accelerate a little.

Of course there would be a fuel use penalty on the NA engine.

My W115 300D doesn't generally feel too anaemic on hills but we in
relatively flat country here on the eastern edge of the prairies. If
feels generally alright on hills unless I have to stop and then climb
the hill.

I have taken the car to the cottage periodically and there is one place
on the highway west bound out of Kenora, Ontario where the road through
town meets the by-pass around the town. There is a stop sign and after
the stop, I have to make a hard left hand turn onto the highway and
climb uphill for half a mile or more. I have a difficult time getting up
to highway speed in that location. The road from the east is a long
straight stretch and there is enough traffic that I will generally have
vehicles behind me wishing that I would get out of their way by the time
I get to the top and start down the other side. This is all 2 lane
highway so there is no real opportunity for them to pass me.

[MBZ] Walk around of the $2500 09S550

2024-04-18 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
https://youtu.be/aZLOhcEonTM

On stage 3 of paint correction, will finish polish and wax this afternoon then
start detailing the interior. Paint and body look really good aside from rock
chip divots. Will get blower regulator and headlight lamp done too. Depending
on the weather I’ll try to get the front axles swapped this weekend.

I think that’s all it needs, will do an oil change soon. Transmission seemed a
little slow to downshift so I’ll get a filter and fluid too, get some clean
juice in it. Diffs too while I’m under there.

Seems like a really nice car.

I bought this one:

https://www.harborfreight.com/80v-brushless-cordless-18-in-chainsaw-tool-only-56937.html

Between the saw and the battery and charger I could have bought a decent
gas-powered saw but I don't use them often enough and always end up having
hassles with old fuel, difficult starting, etc.

The battery electric are nice in that regard, just pop in the battery and go.

I got mine when they were offering a deal on the batteries.

Re: [MBZ] BAUER 5.7 Amp, 6 in. Short-Throw Random Orbit DA Polisher/Sander for $39.99

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Which Atlas saw do you have?

We've got the Bauer ultra cheapie one which has been a solid saw other than the
tensioner stinks. The Atlas appears to have a more convention chain tensioning
system.

I really like electric for a trimming saw because of the way the saw stops
pretty much immediately when you let go of the trigger. This is doubly true for
when I'm up on a ladder.

We've got some spruce trees on the great northern estate that are between the
house and the telephone lines (definitely telephone, I know the difference)
that need to go. They're not too high yet so I think with the electric saw I
can take them down piece by piece off a ladder. An electric saw will be the way
to go...

That’s pretty much the same for my RO. I dropped it once whcih broke one of the
bolts that holds the case halves together. I taped it up with some electrical
tape to take the stress off the remaining bolt and all is well. And this
probably happened 4-5 years ago.

I’m gradually shifting over to Milwaukee M18 system for everything, but I’ll
keep my existing HF stuff as backups. It works, what can I say? I’ve got one of
those angle grinders, too, and it’s been seriously mistreated but still works
just fine.

Re: [MBZ] 300D Manny

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'd always assumed a 240D 3.0 would be an "adequately powerful 240D".

As somebody who lives where its kind of hilly a 240D with its 50mph max
sustained hill climbing speed was a drag. I used to hit some hills at 70mph so
I could crest at 55.

My 240D/3.0 (which is now at Okie Acres) had a OM617.912 naturally
aspirated engine. It got up and went acceptably, though not like my
current W116 300SD ...

I was astonished when I started driving a TDI and finally had a turbo that's
spooled and working at 900 rpm. The turbo is so much more effective on those
cars.

I've never driven a newer MB diesel, I'd hope the turbo gets going sooner...

Turbo is a bit slow to spool up on these, so you'd need to learn to not let the
