DAN,

Looking at this site:
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/kinematic-viscosity-d_397.html shows that
palm has a somewhat higher viscosity than soy oil, at 130 degF.

In CentiStokes:
Palm26.4
Soy 19.64
Peanut 23.4
Coconut 15
Rape Seed 31

Hello All,

I read this study and the one conclusion that really jumped out was:

"...Wear in the engines fueled by refined palm oil and diesel oil is not
significantly different but wear in the compression rings of the engine
fueled by refined palm oil is significantly higher..."

see:
http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_SVO-palm.html

Makes me not want to use VO or WVO or anything like that. It looked to be a
pretty thorough well done study.

I guess the next question is perhaps you would get different results from
different natural oils ?

Enjoy !

For soy and peanut oils, I've seen weights per gallon listed between 7.5 and
7.7 pounds. That would make the number of gallons in 35 lbs somewhere
between 4.54 and 4.64.

According to http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/ah697/ah697.pdf it is ~7.7
lbs/gal for both.

First, I peel off the center pad with my finger tips (I recommend having the

the underside of the wheel upward, toward myself (who is sitting in the

Since the peanut and soy oils seem to weigh ~ the same per unit volume, is

It's interesting that the 'umr' website you furnished lists Diesel #2 with

The part about, "the fuel mixture must be ignited after TDC, else you get
spark knock" makes me wonder about the static and dynamic (vacuum and

recall that they would often start out at 8-10 degrees BTDC, and advance to
the 20-50 range. Of course, setting them *too far* would result in
pre-ignition knocking, agreed.

[MBZ] Audi's new Le Mans contender to be diesel powered

2005-12-28 Thread Gerald R. Flintrop
Audi says it is still working out plans beyond Sebring and Le Mans.

AutoWeek | Published 12/15/05, 11:19 am et

Audi AG hopes it is once again a step ahead of the competition: Audi will
become the first automaker to fight for the overall win with a diesel engine
at the famous Le Mans 24 Hour race.

The new Audi R10, unveiled Dec. 13 in Paris, replaces the R8, which won the
French enduro five times. The R10 is powered by a new 5.5-liter twin-turbo
12-cylinder diesel developing more than 650 hp, about 100 hp more than the
R8s ran at Le Mans, says Audi...

...The R10's chassis is also new. The wheelbase is longer than the R8,
and the chassis, engine and gearbox form an extremely rigid, fully stressed
unit.

"The R10 project is the biggest challenge ever to have been handed to Audi
Sport," said Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport. "TDI technology has
not been pushed to its limits in motorsport yet. We are the first to
confront the challenge. The demands of such a project are high. We have the
chance to write new chapters in the history books of motorsport and diesel
technology."

I've used two of the large, Ionic Breeze units for about three years, and
find that they are effective. They do seem to produce a noticeable amount of

If I had it to do over, I would buy an Ionic Pro brand for less than half

I believe the smaller, desk-top units are much less expensive.

Oh nooo, another synthetic oil thread.

Kirk,
My experience has been just the opposite. Not with a large number of late
model client cars like you can refer to, but with just my two 123's and two
124 diesels. With Castrol and whatever the PO used, these cars started out
with lots of sludge under the filler cap and in the drain pan.
After a few changes with Mobil 1, the sludge went away and the fresh oil
started keeping more of an oil color and less of a diesel black color for
the first day or so after a change. Perhaps the extended change intervals -
like 12k to 20k miles - allows enough time for even synthetic to build up
sludge. I always change at 5k (probably too often by most standards) and I
always have a clean machine :)

How generous is the welfare system? Would somebody from the states want to
sign up for it?
Can the statesiders offer those who are a couple of months away from running
out
of welfare benefits the choice of a free ticket to NZ instead? (probably not
viable, our non-workers outnumber your population)
In other news, some of the non-workers are among the recipients of $2000
relocation
cards from FEMA. If you give a bum $50, he'll run to the nearest package
liquor
store. If you give him $2k, he'll decide it's a reason to celebrate, so
he'll go
to the nudie bar instead. (yep, FEMA cards have been used in strip clubs)
While I'm
sure that many people are using the cards as intended, there are some that
you
cannot help by giving them money. We need a good exportation policy for
them.

"Mr. President, this job can't be fun for you any more. There's

no more money to spend--you used up all of that. You can't start

another war because you used up the army. And now, darn the luck, the

rest of your term has become the Bush family nightmare: helping poor

people. Listen to your Mom. The cupboard's bare, the credit cards

maxed out. No one's speaking to you. Mission accomplished.

"Now it's time to do what you've always done best: lose interest

and walk away. Like you did with your military service and the oil

company and the baseball team. It's time. Time to move on and try

the next fantasy job. How about cowboy or space man? Now I know what

you're saying: there's so many other things that you as President

could involve yourself in. Please don't. I know, I know. There's a

lot left to do. There's a war with Venezuela. Eliminating the sales

tax on yachts. Turning the space program over to the church. And

Social Security to Fannie Mae. Giving embryos the vote.

"But, Sir, none of that is going to happen now. Why? Because you

govern like Billy Joel drives. You've performed so poorly I'm

surprised that you haven't given yourself a medal. You're a

catastrophe that walks like a man. Herbert Hoover was a shitty

president, but even he never conceded an entire city to rising water

and snakes.

"On your watch, we've lost almost all of our allies, the surplus,

four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the

City of New Orleans. Maybe you're just not lucky. I'm not saying you

don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could

be if you were on the other side.

Some time ago, I asserted that my salad quality, Soybean oil was costing
$2.63 per gallon. I based that on the purchase price of $13.15, for a 35#
box. I was erroneously thinking that the jug contained five gallons – I was
guessing that the gallon weighed seven pounds. I now know that it weighs
7.65 lbs/gal, which raises my cost to $2.865/gal.

Oh well, that still beats the $3.37 at the diesel pump.

named Executrix of the estate and it has been pure hell dealing with
groveling siblings the last 8 months. Then our son got married in July and
once again Mama was stressed to the max. And finally, we were told last
month that my wife’s 48 year old brother has 3 to 4 months to live.
So…

Needless to say she and I are kinda worn out. We have decided to skip one
year for the RustyQ, so we can settle down and gain some control in our
lives. I am very sorry since this would have been our 8th cookout. I can
promise that next year will be a GREAT one. If anyone wants to step up and
have a gathering in lieu of this one please come forward. Again, it has
really been fun and we have such a neat collection of people, but I really
don’t think my heart is in it for this year. I look forward to having a nice
blast next year around the middle of October. Thanks for your understanding
in this matter.

Subject: [Banned] the cost of commuting

Background -- I live less than a mile from my office. We are moving to
a new building in a couple of months, but even then it won't be any
more than two miles, easy bicycling or even walking distance.

I put in a resume yesterday for a different job. Rather than being
walking distance from my house, this is new job would be in the next
town over, about 25/30 miles west of where I live.

Using an estimated diesel fuel cost of $2.50 per gallon and a
conservative estimate of 20 mpg with my 240D, even though 25 mpg is
closer to reality, and working an average of 22 days a month, my
calculations show about $165 per month in fuel costs alone to commute.
That is 3 gallons of fuel per day ($7.50) times 60 miles per day times
22 work days per month.

Here is my question. I know it would actually cost me more than just
the purchase of fuel to commute this distance. How much money should I
factor in for wear & tear on the car, tire wear, extra quarts of Mobil
1, etc.?

If offered a position, I don't want to quote an acceptable starting
salary only to find out later that I am actually "making" less money
than I do now with almost zero commute time.

And this doesn't even take into account the commuting time, especially
when we are up to our butts in snow and the temp is -10F or lower.
The road I would be taking is a major two lane east/west highway
(Highway 30 that cuts across Iowa) that is mostly through farm land,
with the prevailing winter winds from the north frequently making some
very high snow drifts across the road and white-out conditions.

The one good thing about the new job is that it is in the computer
field. The bad thing is the commute.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Sure, it's the tax credit that makes me buy diesel-powered cars.

Of course, this tax credit could cause a small-scale repeat of what
happened in the late 70s/early 80s with Mercedes - a large crop of new
diesel owners who really shouldn't own diesel cars because they don't
understand how to take care of them.

Hi Sue,

Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother.

Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down
lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you
realize it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to
me, I first must bore you with a few
technicalities of my job.

As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to
the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool.
So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial
water heater.

This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea.
It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to
the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now
this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times
with no complaints.

What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the
hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This
floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started
to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things
worse.

Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out

from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I

realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up

a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit.

Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish

couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my butt was not as

fortunate.

When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding

the jellyfish into the crack of my butt. I informed the dive

supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were

unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all

laughing hysterically.

Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three

agonizing in-water decompress ion stops totaling

thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my

chamber dry decompression.

When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass

helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears

of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told

me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber. The cream

put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two days because my butt was

swollen shut.

So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much

worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up

your butt.

Now repeat to yourself, "I love my job, I love my job, I love my

job".

Don't even think about a 617 powertrain in a W124. Either fix the
engine or get a used 606 motor to drop in. If you're a glutton for
punishment, a 603 turbo powertrain would work, but getting things like
the cruise control to function might be a real trick. A 606 turbo
would be the holy grail but that would take tons of custom work and
probably a Myna-Diesel massaged manual injection pump ($1500) and
elimination of almost all the computer controls. Would be lots of fun,
but not easy nor cheap.

Not exactly right. In this case, the 380 indicates a (approx.) 3.8 liter
engine. It happens to be a V8.

In the early 80s, back in Germany, the 300 series was what later became the
E-class, over here. You could see 300s with 2 liter fours, various diesels
and whatnot.

Ok, that blows my whole theory outta the water. I know almost nothing

Any problem with buying a new car that has sat for almost two years

almost no miles on it, has just been parked at the dealership.

Anyone know anything about the 2004 Suburbans. He said it has a Vortec

16/18 for gas mileage.

Thoughts and recommendations I could pass on to him? Lives in Florida.

I, for one, was glad for the bolt assist, even if it WAS designed after the
fact. The only time I really needed it though, was after slogging thru a
paddy. I remember that, on my first tour the M14s had problems, after
getting dunked or too much sand in them (something a quick whiz could flush
out).

As to the automotive fire suppression systems, we built them into the Nissan
cars for the IMSA Camel GTP races.

Now that I think of it, some of the Army's aircraft had them and Xerox' big
copiers had them built in, too. Better late than never IS a civilian

Doesn't the bolt assist just scream "poor design"? It would be like putting

a fire suppression system under the hood of a car 'because it catches fire a

lot.' Better to make a rifle that cycles the bolt correctly all the time
automatically, without the need to 'assist' it.

If you want tracers, I noticed that www.cheaperthandirt.com has ".223
Caliber Tracer Centerfire Rifle Cartridge, 55-Grain M196 FMJ Bullet,
Demilled, 20 Rounds Per Box", for $7.97.

One can find LOTS of other stuff by entering ".223" in their Search window.
For example:

For $2.97 (plus), they're offering this - "Russian .223, 62-grain hollow
point bullet, nickel plated steel case, Berdan-primed, non-reloadable,
non-corrosive, new current commercial production. Very attractive round with
nickel case. Accurate and reliable ammunition. 20 rounds per box, 25 boxes
per case. We sell this by the 20-round box. Non-returnable item; we will not
accept any returns on this. You will be charged an additional $3.00 total
handling fee on all orders for ammunition. Ammo restrictions: We do not sell
ammunition to Massachusetts; New York City; Washington, DC; or Cook County,
Illinois. Please check your state and local laws before ordering ammunition.
Ammo Price Is Per Box Ammo Cannot Ship by Air!"

I sometimes shoot this stuff in my Sako Vixen, which I added to my
collection while I was stationed in Heidelberg. Seems that military stuff
worked just fine, in this application 8^).

BTW, by the time I was on my 2nd and 3rd tours in Vietnam, we had converted
to M16s (5.56mm). There didn't seem to be an obvious problem with its "man
stopping" capability. But, that's only my personal opinion.

IMO 5.56 (.223) when loaded to full NATO spec (or a
little hotter (IMI (Israeli Military Industries)) esp
with the SS109 bullet (US mil rnd M855 (with steel
pentrator)) AND when shot out of a full length barrel
(not M4 short barrel) is extremely effective. Beucase
of the high velocity and low mass of the bullet, it
tumbles shortly after entering the body...making a
small entrance would but a terrible mess inside, esp
after it brakes in half at the cannelure. The Russians
have taken the idea further in the AK-74 with 5.45mm
round (that's smaller than a .22! - but ultra fast).

Also, if the doodie ever hits the fan, there will be
lots of it around. Was at a gun shop 2 days ago and
they are having trouble getting 5.56 as it's going to
Iraq and even other rounds are getting scarcer as ammo
makers convert to 5.56 production. No doubt ALOT of
shooting is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.

P.S. lacquered cases - might work fine in Commie guns,
but not in an AR over time...our specs are too tight,
which is fine by me, and the lacquer will build
up...some report this, others don't, so I stick with
brass. Steel cases will cause wear too...harder than
brass.

[MBZ] ATE Brake Fluid (Blue)

2005-07-06 Thread Gerald R. Flintrop
Rusty,

Late last week, I ordered three liters of ATE Super Blue Racing brake fluid
from you. Today, it arrived, and in great shape.

Thanks again for having what I need, and at a price way under the
competition's.

I wish it was 40mpg, best I've seen is 33mpg. I've had really found
the quality of the W124 I have is great! I don't know about the 1996
ones though, they have the same engine but W210 body. But is it LIGHT
years ahead of my W123 when it comes to being refined. . It is a
really nice car!

RE: [MBZ] I wouldn't put this crap on my car

2005-06-26 Thread Gerald R. Flintrop
Christopher,

Pls pardon my jumping in, but the pictured air filter may well be limited to
only stopping twigs and small birds from entering the engine's air stream.
The dust it passes will almost surely increase abrasive wear and tear.

Jerry (just my 2 cents worth)

Kaleb,

We had a thread on this about 6 months ago. Marshall
said that since the engine AS IS operates with an
abundance of air, there is NO WAY it can increase
performance.

But I have been wondering if there is anyway it could
HARM the engine. I am tired of breaking air filter
mounts, of making do-dads to keep the damn thing from
breaking again, etc. My concern isn't performance but
the stupidest thing ever to come out of MB: the 126
air cleaner mounting apparatus.

Thoughts?

Christopher

RE: [MBZ] OT: Headphones, IPODS, Walkman whatever

2005-06-25 Thread Gerald R. Flintrop
I had a deaf/mute acquaintance, who was a licensed driver, and a very good
one at that! Besides, it's hard to hear ANYTHING, from the outside, in some
of the newer Luxo-Cruisers (or in my 84 300SD, for that matter 8^).

not really relevant; ever ridden with a Deaf friend? not having ears to rely
on, their vision skills are developed to where they see things most Hearies
would be amazed by,...

FWIW, earphones covering *both* ears are illegal in Calif. as well.

cheers!

I have a program called "convert.exe" that does torque, too. It's 568KB in
size.

Kaleb, should I send it?

My favorite is the unit conversion feature. I really wish it did

torque, though.

On a trip to Greenland in Feb '78 aboard a C-141, a steward handed out
little foam ear plugs during engine start. One of the passengers chewed
them - thought they were bubble gum.

Hello All,

I am going to take the liberty of including a photo here, apologies to those
of you who are on dial up. My month-old, dealer-purchased, Vin. cut key
already busted out of it's cheesy plastic head, so I made it a new rosewood
head. I think it came out pretty darn nice & I didn't have to resort to
super glue & electricians tape! Whaddaya think?
